    Have you noticed the one thing that is always missing from all of these electric air taxi promo videos? The sound. Be it powered by conventional props, or EDF's, they never let you hear just how bloody loud they really are. And I am guessing there is only one reason for that! Add the noise issue to all the other impracticalities of a personal electric air taxi, you would have thought these guys would have given up already. But whilst the money keeps rolling in, they will keep on at it. Gives them something to do I guess.

      The thing I lost it on recently was seeing an article about an "ion powered drone", which is supposed to be silent (I think it was even in the company name), and you go to watch the demo video and it's an EDF with ion propulsion just for tilting the drone.

      My favorite part is how thar trying to upscale a fricken multirotor drone, when helicopters already exist & they get the job done exponentially better than what all these so-called "air taxis" will ever do.
      At least helicopters can autorotate, when their engine/motor fails. Multirotors on the other hand, they literally drop out of the sky & crash, when their motors quit.

      quite right. the main airport in wellington has a curfew because the current noise levels, and that is after the jets flying in there were all superceded by modern turbofans (aka whisperjets) that introduced intermediate layers of airflow around the highest speed central exhaust flow to reduce the ripping noise on take off (zero airframe speed, maximum exhaust speed). These air taxis will never get a permit to operate in any city anywhere, with no feasible solution in sight. Physics + community tolerance for noise simply says no, especially given that air taxis are like air travel - a niche for the comparatively wealthy.
      We don't even want to build a 4 lane road to the airport - Who is that for? We fly once a year despite being firmly upper middle class, why should we pay for that? We are certainly not going to permit air taxis to increase traffic and noise in our neighbourhoods further, and they are clearly gonna be aimed to urban to near urban transport.

    • @NiCadHeliPilot
      @NiCadHeliPilot Před rokem

      @@munkywrench00 Noise levels was one of the reasons why Concorde got so many restrictions placed on her, regarding where she could & couldn't fly.
      When everything was all said & done, Concorde was almost never allowed to fly at or above Mach 1, whenever she was flying over densely populated land.
      Also, since Concorde, there has been numerous attempts at supersonic passenger aircraft (Spike Aerospace, & Boom Supersonic come to mind here). But, they all only get so far, before thar stonewalled by the same restrictions that Concorde faced. Then, they (for all intents & purposes) drop off the radar after-the-fact.
      If I were a betting gal, I would put my money on these so-called "air taxis" being met with the same (if not similiar) restrictions due to noise _alone,_ much less any other issues.

    I think drone delivery might make sense for some infrequent, but time critical scenarios - perhaps delivering medical supplies to impromptu field hospitals, for example - but if you're sending your fast food to someone, why not just get one of those Starship robots to take it on wheels at just over walking speed? Yes, those have driven into lakes (and in one spectacular failure, driven across an active level crossing) but they still have an excellent success/failure ratio.

    In the gaming community getting a physical version of a game to add to you collection is important to diehard fans and a lot of games get sold back to the store which can't be done with digital sales. So I wouldn't say it is completly without merit. Those people would have driven to the store to pick up the same purchase thus using even more resources.

    Wing will most likely have a talk with CAA on what exactly happened, why it happened that way, what is the risk of similar incident repairing, how such incident will be prevented in the future. This will probably happen behind closed doors because there is no "just culture" in unmanned aviation. In 2018 out of ~16000 incidents reported in Australia 77 were reported by RPAS pilots or operators amount of reportable incidents was suspected to be significantly higher. Regular Joe wouldn't call CAA or write a report on the incident but rather get the drone and GTFO before authorities connected him to the incident.

      But at least these trucks are in a limited, defined area where the only people are told the do's and don'ts, as opposed to these anywhere the company likes near people who are uninformed of the dangers and procedures, etc.
      The dangers of drones are, at this stage, only from government and corporate drones. If Bruce's drone hit a powerline, the biggest problem will be a molten lump hitting the ground, it isn't big enough to get caught on more than one wire and I have seen plenty of bats and birds caught across wires that hang there till they rot. Lucky that is outside the monitoring of my power bill.

    The strings on the front are not actually on the wing surface but on the nacelle surface. I'm not so sure the the front wing is stalled. Let me know what you think.

    • @xjet
      @xjet Před rokem +4

      The fore-plan may not be totally stalled but given how much of the foreplane is covered by that nacelle it's also not going to be producing much lift and the drag will still be extraordinarily high.

  • @clifffield1
    @clifffield1 Před rokem +2

    Hi Bruce, isn't there a 'wing' of sorts (a canard) in front of those front EDF nacelles? I'm not sure the front nacelles themselves are designed to produce aerodynamic lift, are they? I mean, even if they aren't, they'd certainly provide a big chunk of drag - so I guess it would be good design to have them generate some lift when travelling forward. I guess your point still stands, in that, whatever the configuration, the thing looks pretty inefficient (I'm no aerodynamicist).

    • @jameswalker199
      @jameswalker199 Před rokem +1

    6:29 - just a short stop to warm up the meal between 2 lines.
    Regarding lilium it might be a question of the business case and the might be some where emission will force to replace the helicopters around the airports. Have not heard about electric powered helicopters.
    Huge project and they can operate just a year or so before they need another funding. Again a company run by former Airbus managers to get the production prepared for run and the certification. They still have not explained the key question and solution about their efficiency, energy consumption and battery - drive train to achieve the goals they were communicating, at least the previous ceo had to step down when the Nicola empire broke down back then.
    WIth the rocket launcher style edf on the wing there is not much of any lift left. And they will have 4 independent pivot mechanism on or in each wing which will be the biggest risk compared to a dead or broken edf . Maybe the speedcontroller can also become an issue too. Long way to go - or the magic of a wonder might help, a new cell chemistry or solid state battery we have not heard about yet.
    But the progress in battery tech has slowed down in the past 3 - 5 years, only innovations of cell to pack ratios and a bit Tesla magic in the new bigger cells gaining 3 or 5% here and there, but not 30% more range. But let us wait and see, the revolution of EV has found its way too even though there was not much 5 years ago to mention beyond the whole Tesla motion back then in 2017.

    Drone delivery of anything other than emergency medical supplies to remote areas is absolutely ridiculous under any analysis whatsoever. Bird strikes will take down drones large enough to deliver anything worthwhile as will hardware malfunctions and that, if this ever became widespread (and it WON'T) would then present large hazards to persons and properties in populated areas. Another problem if it ever became widespread would be cargo thefts and people under flight paths getting tired of the noise while trying to relax in their back yards at which point physical anti-drone efforts might be taken by hotheads.

    Years ago I got offered a job developing delivery drones, ha ha ha, no thanks.
    BTW you don't need wings on a vetol because with a horizontal propulsion fan/s the vertical props act as efficient wings. BTDT.

    Lol the drones. If these things start flying then an average Joe with a GPS jammer can cause destruction. FPV stuff doesn't fall out of the sky because of GPS lock. If the FAA had regulations against this crap then they would actually be doing stuff, instead of wasting everyone's time making pointless regulations for toys.

    long story short, this is a bad design from the aerodynamic point of view.

    if someone invests in that lillium 1 .. i mean in their own advert they show if it has a single failure its a bomb into a crowded city and they want to market them for city flight .. baaahahahaha never going to ever get this legalised XD
    if they are stupid enough to invest they deserve to loose their money XD

      It's called "a reality check". If you want to buy into the hype, hysterial and deception that is the drone-delivery and air-taxi industry then you are most welcome to.
