honestly, I had a drama teacher sort of like this (I mean, obviously not actually a murderous psycho, but still) my senior year in high school (you know, the year I was trying to focus on graduating and didn't have as much time to throw myself in memorizing lines), and he was a tremendous dickhole, I'm about 80% sure a cokehead, and he ruined me on theater :^)

I am not even sure how I want to describe the flavor that permeated the slow descent into chaotically disturbing combinations. Like an out-of-tune Tuba, that guy was just... YUCK. Didn't know I could taste a new kind of lima bean combo - but that tasted like if you had lima bean flavored buttercream frosting that was broke from unskilled hands and just stuck to the roof of your mouth like peanut butter - retch inducing... Despite that, it was absolutely an enjoyable listening experience, if extremely sad.

That was interesting and intense. Really enjoyed it. After reading the comments, I initially assumed that, at some point, Steele would r-word the protagonist, glad he didn't but he was still a psychopath. Also, I guess you could say that Steele really *lost his heart* to the play! XD (sorry, I couldn't resist. XD)
Also, I don't know why, but I thought this was going to be classic Creepypasta characters (Jeff The Killer, Eyeless Jack, Laughing Jack, Slenderman, etc) celebrating Christmas when I read the title. XD

The Grinch done dark or even modernized would be scary. Like instead of being in Whoville it's in some mundane place and you see a house overlooking the "city" and in the night a man ends up breaking into houses believing he is the Grinch doing a "good thing" and criminality pays off only for instead of his heart changes. He ends up snapping at the realization that his mind has gone and dies on the spot due to the mental breakdown.

Humans are the scariest monsters in existence.
What's sad is people like Mr. Steele are a lot the reason people don't want to go to church or believe in God. But I promise you all, that's not God, that's humans. And to anyone whose been wronged like this, that was the church that did you wrong, not God. This story was good and too real.
Also one more thing: NOT ONE single verse in the King James Bible says anything about “going to church” as in church building. They’re all rooted in pagan origins and go back to Rome even the so-called Protestant denominations they all go back to Rome, you look at the ritualistic practices and they’re almost identical. One more thing you must consider: these church buildings are owned by the government! That is bad news in capital letters! 501C3 they’re non-profit by the IRS, which in English means they’re part of the government. When the Covid thing came around, the church buildings shut down, right there that was clear and present proof that they’re fake and they don’t serve the true Jesus!
Avoid church buildings like the plague!
Non-profit absolutely does not mean government owned. The Church owns all of the buildings, 100% of the donations go to them, and because of their religious and non-profit status, they don't pay a cent in taxes (unrelated business income being an exception) and aren't legally required to file with the IRS at all; that's just about as far as it gets from "government-owned/controlled". The Church owns more property and handles more cash then some nations for that matter.
As far as COVID goes, the church can't just decide it's gonna stay open as a nonessential business in the midst of a pandemic, just because it wants to. That's a good way to get fined to hell and back.
