Sonny & Cher Show - Season 2 Opener (Silly Love Songs)

  • Sonny & Cher return for season two of their variety show in episode which aired September 26, 1976. This segment shows the entire opening: the intro features cameos by Tom & Dick Smothers, Barbara Eden, Wayne Rogers, Charo and Bob Hope. In season two, producers made a point, likely for economies of scale, to shoot segments with a roster of guest stars, then use them throughout the season (as guests will reappear multiple times though the same season). Season two also began the practice of interspersing a recurring skit (Laverne & Alvin) during the opening song, which seemed tedious and was dropped by mid-season.

    I've watched the shows after their divorce when they first aired, and I have to admit it hit me hard that they divorced, so I had a rather skewed way of looking at their shows after their divorce. I see them now, and realize they both were still very good together, had tremendous chemistry and yes loved each other, and the shows were packed with lots of talent, comedy and yes love. I think they were the best couple in show business. We were all just hurt and disappointed they got a divorce.

      I have read various accounts that Cher also had her own flings. People who worked on the 1969 movie Chastity that Sonny wrote & produced, said that she was involved with the male lead of the film during the making of it. Also, when she left him at the Vegas hotel in 1972, she spent the night with guitarist Bill Hamm. Neither did it all correctly, but their love for each other is undeniable. Cher said in an article Nov. 2018, of all the men she's been with over the years, she misses & loves Sonny the most & that "if he were to walk through that door right now, we would be Sonny & Cher again in about 2 seconds"

    • @JPSkyeBlue
      @JPSkyeBlue Před 2 lety +1

      tpajay I’d rather trust the people involved themselves than rumors of people who worked around them. And even then, the truth of what happened probably lies somewhere in between, as is the case most of the time. However I will say that by Sonny’s own words, he admitted to cheating several times in his autobiography. The most he accuses Cher of is flirting with her Chastity costar - which if you consider her side of things, I don’t blame her. Also the Bill Hamm incident as described by Sonny - was that she told Sonny to leave the room so she could sleep with Bill, which in fact she did not do - even tho Sonny cheated on her again that night. I don’t find Cher’s actions there fully blameful or blameless. But it did always piss me off that in that made for TV movie supposedly based on Sonny’s book after he died, they played that scene out like she did sleep with him and made it out like Cher was a total bitch and the one to blame for everything. I hated that movie - full of inaccuracies. Sonny did control Cher also - but maybe that wasn’t even fully his fault because when they first met, she needed and even wanted that in her life. But she was 16 then, and she grew up. I think leaving Sonny was probably the hardest thing she ever did - I know it’s been alluded to, if not full out said, that she considered suicide over ending their marriage. They not only loved each other but they were dependent on each other - besides the fact that they were America’s sweethearts and a brand. And I also think Cher was very hurt when she found out that Sonny had literally made her an employee and not his equal. She had to leave him to grow up. But she’s acknowledged there would be no Cher without Sonny. And I think their relationship transcended anything as simple as married or divorced. Anyway, don’t know why I’m rambling to a two year old comment at 3:30am, but there you go!

    • @tpajay
      @tpajay Před rokem +2

      @@JPSkyeBlue I'm going by Sonny's autobiography too about both of them &, like I said, neither of them did it all correctly. I never watched the movie because most bio movies have to embellish a little for more interest to the viewer. On various YT clips that can be seen with Cher and/or Sonny. (i.e. The Mike Douglas Show, Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson, Dinah, Ellen, etc.), Cher admitted that Sonny was controlling because he was Italian (her words on Ellen). In that era of time, men did control the business world for the most part & they were a business that Sonny wanted to keep relevant. I can remember rumors that he abused her & she said that in 11 years of marriage, she could only think of 3 times they actually yelled at each other & that he was "adorable". Sonny also said in an interview in 1988 on Later w/Bob Costas that they were never rude with each other. Cher admitted that she left Sonny because she wanted to make her own decisions; but when she hosted with Mike on The Mike Douglas Show in 1979, Mike asked her if she ever called Sonny about music advice when she was doing a new album & she said yes and he would be the first to hear her song. She said that she called him about advice on a lot of things that he should get paid for house calls (jokingly). Sonny's 3rd wife, Susie Coelho, said on a TV interview in 1999 that Cher called Sonny so much for advice that it put a strain on their marriage because she wanted it to be about Sonny & Susie and not Sonny & Cher anymore. In Cher's own words on Oprah (2002), she said that leaving Sonny was the hardest thing for her but then his death was even harder to deal with. Did they have a rocky relationship at times...... you better believe it! But both have said over the years (post divorce) that they still loved the other. My post was basically written because it's said that it was all Sonny's fault & I think blame could probably be a bit on both sides. Neither of my posts are a putdown of either of them because I'm a Sonny AND Cher fan & remember their songs being played on the radio in the 1960s & have all 34 episodes of The Sonny & Cher Show (post divorce) & all 67 episodes of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour on DVDs. You get nostalgic when you get old about a lot of things and if I need a laugh, I'll watch a couple of the DVDs. No matter what.....they were great together! I'm surprised I didn't notice your response until just now & responding late night too,

    • @JPSkyeBlue
      @JPSkyeBlue Před rokem +1

      @@tpajay oh the movie didn’t embellish, it had an obvious agenda (in my opinion). It was intended to paint Sonny in a perfect light and paint Cher as a bitch. I love them both too and 100% agree that their relationship was complicated at best - and that they loved each other in their own way until Sonny died and then even after. Cher’s grief after his death was heart wrenching and so very real. She may have talked over the years about how much he still meant to her post divorce - but I don’t think she even fully realized it herself until she lost him. I just get defensive when people accuse her of cheating on Sonny - because even by his admission, she did not. I think her biggest fault in the relationship was growing up and out of it - obviously out of her control. She had needed Sonny to run everything when she was 16, but she wanted some independence at 27 and Sonny didn’t know how to reconcile with that. I don’t fault him for that - people grow and change. And I don’t really fault him for making Cher an employee of Cher Enterprises because I believe he really did think they’d be together forever and he’d take care of her. I don’t know that she would’ve sued over “involuntary servitude” if not for David Geffen. But I do fault him for the infidelity.
      Anyway, after years and years of knowing the story of their breakup and hearing them both talk about it in interviews, it wasn’t until seeing the Cher Show musical on Broadway that I really fully thought on a human level how difficult and incredibly brave that decision was for her to leave him. So difficult that she seriously considered ending her life over ending the marriage. To be faced with the concept of America literally hating her for breaking up America’s sweethearts. Thank God for Lucy - to be a real life example of doing the same thing and coming out stronger on the other side. It’s not like there were many others. Certainly not like today. As a human and as a woman, I feel incredibly proud of her for doing what she had to do for her, even if it was the hardest thing she’d ever done.
      But yes, they had a magic unlike any other - and love watching all their old shows together too. Love watching the implicit trust she has in him in her young eyes when they sing together in their very early performances and we know how terrified she was. Love watching them crack each other up when her dress zipper keeps coming down as she laughs during an opening monologue on the Sonny & Cher Show, pregnant with Elijah. And I don’t think without the other, either of them ever would have been famous and certainly not the same people they grew to be. ❤️
