I love the way the chemistry is so constant throughout this whole exchange. She clearly legit thinks he's an a-hole, he clearly is one and hasn't fully accepted how much of one he is. But he's also masterful at keeping the dynamic fresh and knows his talent. He admires her for saying it which increases his attraction to her, she has enough charm and respect for him that she regards him just enough to keep things electric. She challenges him to up his charm game to max levels, not letting him get away with cheap jokes and effusive flirting. She's simultaneously challenging and coy. It's just perfect.
What in the hell are you talking about
@@Lloyd_Christmas11 If you aren't that sensitive or empathic, you probably miss a lot of interpersonal dynamics that more sensitive people can recognize. Observe and learn.
@@TrueWalker88
I imagine that I may consider things about people in a similar way as you might.
However, you have a very illustrative way of detailing your words to relate what it was that you recognized.
As I was reading your description, the conversation they had was playing back in my minds eye, as it affirmed to me, that; yes, I did notice that about that particular interplay.
The way in which you described it, certainly added delightfulness upon my
resurveying the interaction between the two of them.
I enjoyed your comment very much.
@TrueWalker88 I'm not empathetic and I know exactly what you are talking about
@@ryanschweikhardt Then you're reasonably emotionally intelligent.
she's so honest. and charming. and beautiful. and everything. he was really thrown off by her. star struck.
This interview took place almost 40 years ago, and I'm thrown off by her, sitting here watching. There is something really special about her.
Wow! She was so beautiful here. I think this moment was the apex of her beauty. She was 40 years old here and this is the most beautiful that I remember her - even during her young years during Sonny & Cher.
* before fillers drove up and ruined even GOOD plastic surgery
Totally agree with you harry baules, "wow" indeed. Her smile is captivating and even when she's serious her eyes are so direct and focused. The fact she's genuine, straight talking and devoid of hypocrisy makes her even more attractive.
And her personality was so charming on this show. If you saw her only on The Sonny And Cher Show she was always pretending (acting) like she was judging Sonny the Dummy which was the act of course.
Watching Cher I was in difficulty to keep my beast quiet...
She was never beautiful. Inside or out. She used everybody.
Cher's body language says a lot. At the start of the interview shouting distrust, arms folded is a big indicator, leaning back, sitting away in the chair, her body almost turned away and shoulder up, laughter is a camouflage in a way, it looked like she wanted to sit in the furthest chair when she came close, yea not good vibes. She is not afraid to say what she thinks, very strong personality, she is definitely not a pushover.
Yes, and you watch letterman, he is always moving forward on his chair into the personal space of all his female guests. Touchy feely for the ladies and for the guys he is on the other side of his desk with maleophobia.
Cher is classy.I love when she told Letterman, "Wait a minute I'm not finished"...she clearly owns her space.
Your definition of “ classy “ is way different than mine.
@@glowilk5377 My thoughts exactly.
I would say b!@ch more than classy. Not there.
Classy? 🤣🤣 She is the opposite of 'classy'
Like her or hate her, she commands the room or at least the conversation.
I saw a clip of Cher in concert, and she was telling the audience the story behind this appearance. There's a lot to the story, but she said she hadn't been on Dave's show because she was afraid he would say something mean to her that would make her go home and cry. But she didn't realize Dave had this huge crush on her and she thought it was cute when he was having trouble putting two words together.
Of course he had a crush on her! Who didn't have a crush on Cher in those days!
She threw David out of it. He seemed to be even humbled by it. Well done. ( and he is an ahole)
@@lindalee5866💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
Where does she say that?? Because Dave's huge crush was Terry Garr, Blake lively, Drew Barrymore, Julia Roberts but his biggest crush was Terr Garr. And he had crush on Natalie Portman... He never mentioned Char..... plus Char said because he says mean things to the guests he doesn't like???? Your information is little off ???? Plus only reason she went is he paid 28,000 for her hotel....
Of course he had a crush on Cher. Did you watch the video?
It's funny, this one has become so infamous over the years, I never realized how charming the whole interview really was!
I worked with both Cher's mother and sister. Nicer folks you'd never meet, and Cher was so thoughtful that it blew my mind.
Thanks, she seems nice n down to earth, glad you confirmed it.
@@devinneitzert3326
I have never in my entire life met anyone as kind and thoughtful as Cher. For such a huge celebrity, this was quite a delightful surprise, just knowing that people like this exist.
@@tiffsaver ok, She is someone who keeps fame and fortune at bay. I'm glad she is just a normal lovely lady.
Dolly Parton is also a super sweet amazing person.
You were very Lucky to work with amazing People. I can tell by the way She talks, She is very real. She invokes innocence and intelligence combined. I can't stand intellectual arrogance, I once confronted Somebody like that, I think He wanted to murder Me....all I said was, You do realize, being so arrogant and educated like Yourself.....You might as well be ignorant, it's the same fine line, that runs through many things, like the one that runs between Love and Hate
Basically she dismantled and disarmed Dave and had him flustered
CHER never forgot where she came from❣️ The way she speaks & says what she feels is what I like most about her. Such a lovely human being. 🤍🌷🌿
Cher, in this episode is at her most natural and so gorgeous!!
I remember watching this when it first aired.
I had never seen Dave so flustered after she called him an asshole. The way he kept circling back around to it, you could tell it really bugged him because he truly liked her. 😂
16:53, wow
That was soooo... evident and obvious that I almost felt bad for Dave! 😂
Really felt for him 😂
@@beeoflight not me. Didn't you see she wrote down her private number for him? That's the card he grabs and holds onto at the end.
Watching Dave interview Cher had me on the edge of my seat, every time.
You don't see Dave get rattled very often. But she clearly knocked him off balance with that comment. Great interview of a legendary artist.
Oh please, it looked pretty set up to me. And knocked off balance? Not really.
I always thought he was an ass hole and how he treated Mary Tyler Moore proved it. I'm glad she said it.
She was honest, this counts allot
@jamesrowden303 Yeah, she pretended to avoid his show for years just for a joke... 🙄
She has talk about this interview a lot of times. She really thought he was an ashole and you can clearly see she's being totally serious.
You gotta give it up for Cher. She is really something special. Charisma. Her and Dave's 'back and forth' is pretty damn funny. Kind of reminds me of her and Sonny when they had their own show on t.v. Cher has aged like a fine wine. She just looks better as she gets older, and it's not all from cosmetic surgery. She appears to be so genuine and unique. Someone you could talk with for hours and never get bored. I have to say that Cher would have me 'eating out of her hand'.
It was all good until she jumped out from behind a tree, with a 2x4, on a ski slope and nailed Sonny in the knoggen.
- No.
Yeah, all good until Sonny tried skiing after about 7 hydrocodone and hit a tree that jumped out on front of him! LOL!!@@Noitisnt-ns7mo
Truly one of the classic moments of television history. Pair this with the entire 1987 Sonny and Cher reunion episode, and you've got you some fine entertainment...
Never considered myself a Cher fan, but I loved getting to know her a little more from watching this. I really enjoyed her in Mask.
And Moonstruck!
Moonstruck was amazing but Silkwood was the movie to watch
Cher is so smart talker and she keeps a good composure and subtlety i just love who she is inside and out.. outspoken as she speaks what she thinks and truthfully admire people for their merits and she tells them
I watched the show every night for some thirty years and Cher over the years and Dave became and have become cherished friends. In fact on his last show he wanted Cher on his show. He adored her as we all have over the years. There is only ONE Cher and no one will ever again be like her.
It's touching to watch Dave try to get his mind around her having thought he was an asshole. You can tell he has her in really high esteem and wants to change that impression. I think he succeeded. I hope she thought so.
She really fixed his wagon! He was nicer to people from there on out!
It was a cute moment. And did she write down her phone number for him?
Cher is an ICON. I luv many things about her and her independence! She is naturally beautiful inside and out!
wow...indoctrination is strong
Cher is certainly NOT an 'ICON' ... except for maybe drag queen performers 🤣
Dave is smitten and it’s hilarious.
You can tell even here the chemistry between them is great. She knew how to give it back and Dave I know secretly loved it
Really???? I thought it was cringey and awkward. I hate these talk shows. They’re pointless and feel forced. Lotta small talk. Jimmy Fallon now is the worst.
@@MxMicah1038 Talk shows are fine and Dave's not that bad at interviewing.
Cher's really off in this interview, though. For most of it she's kind of standoffish. She doesn't handle pleasantries well, seems bad at small talk and takes long pauses to seemingly simple questions. She doesn't fill the silence like the average person does.
@@Lucifronz I sensed she was just awkward and uncomfortable. I’d be terrified and dreading being interviewed in a talk show. I hate sarcasm. I’d be like wtf
Cher, one of my favorites. So gorgeous and emotionally accessible. She doesn't hold back.
All I knew was the 90s Cher..Wow I see why she is so big now
She can also afford it, I sure can't.
Gorgeous she is not...5/10 at best.
@@mikeblazAre you kidding? Or are you blind?
Doesn’t hold back; can’t stay married long. Yep.
Man she was beautiful at 40.
Man wasn't she though
MAN HE HAS A BIG ADAMS APPLE
❤
I never realized how beautiful Cher really was/ is. She really has an appealing way about her, here.
She just ticks all the boxes ❤
She's ticked a lot of boxes in her years...
They're not booing, they're chanting Cherrrr, Cherrrrr... This is peak Dave right here.
She is so down to earth. LOve her.
I love how assertive, and how honest she is. What a legend.
She's so beautiful and such a great personality and tons of self respect. I love her.
It's man. Wake up
@@KevinTobin-yd1ku 😂
I was lucky enough to see Sonny & Cher in concert at the Iowa State fair in 1967, I was only 13 then.
Cher nailed it. Dave is an awhole, but we love him and he's funny. It's just of the personality he plays. Sort of a sarcastic smartass. I like it. It's channeling energy a lot of us can relate to. He is basically a real gentleman when it comes right down to it. At least, that would be my guess. I guess his style might be seen as abrasive by some and they might be nervous to go on, but he knows how hard to go. Databyter
Cher is everything! 🥰 I love her on Letterman, during all her visits she sure gave Dave a good ol' tough time - always tounge in cheek . 😂 I love her honesty and how she wraps it up in her sense of humor.
This woman has achieved so much, and I will never stop admiring her for being the most amazing chick I ever had the pleasure of briefly meeting. We never talked, but I felt as if my life was complete just being in her presence 🤩I grew up thinking she was the coolest thing - I still do.
Hahahahaha! I forgot how funny this segment was. Cher and Dave are just so cute. 1986...it was a little different world.
Cher is an awesome human being as well as an extraordinary talent and smart as a whip. She don’t play. Love her! ❤❤❤
She’s as real as it gets
Looks more like plastic to me...
This pivotal episode of Letterman from 1986 was the one that rocked Dave from being a late night cult hit to mainstream superstar literally overnight. I remember the amount of both serious news coverage and Entertainment shows salivating over this "shocking" appearance by Cher! The interplay was actually quite cute, absolutely charming and hilarious😅 Wonder when she wrote down her phone number during break and slipped it Dave if they ever 'met up' later?? ❤❤
Cher is so impressive. Her intellict and honesty (as well as beauty and talent) is captivating.
BS, she a joke
lol
Cher was a Man...looks
Good one.
But her child rearing was a little less spectacular. Stick to what impresses you and you can enjoy your bliss.
Dave is always the best in a hostile situation.
Yep. Remember his interviews with Madonna too.
And Harvey Pekar.
One beautiful lady, very sweet personality.
I've always respected Cher but somehow I never realized how beautiful she was back then.
She has said a few times she is a man
She was ❤❤❤
I signed in just to comment that also. I've never before been drawn to her as much as here in this video.
I've always felt she was hot!
She was kinda famous for being very beautiful.
I grew up in the 80s and 90s and Cher’s whole being is as authentic as authentic comes. She is the epitome of wit, intelligence, sarcasm, talent and beauty.
Just when I think Cher couldn't look lovelier than she does now in 2023, I'm watching this clip and wow -wasn't she gorgeous in 1986? Always beautiful and so talented.
I never realized how smart, funny, and strong she was. The intensity and focus of her eye contact is like a dangerous animal.
You know it's 2023 & Cher's been Rocking since the 60s? 😅
erm...
She still IS!
She was very young when she hit the big time… you have to be streetwise and smart in order to survive fame.
She really was on guard.
its amazing how in 10 minutes, she goes from arms crossed and all the way on the left side of the chair to relaxed and spread out
Good body language analysis.
Yep, on the defensive from the get-go--Cher, not Dave.
she was just fishing for a brand new insult
They had FABULOUS CHEMISTRY...😅
Huh!" You're probably right...XD @@mpup54
She was gorgeous back then.
Even so, it's cool to see the start of a friendship that would grow and last for years.
Boy she really says what she thinks with no filter!
He was utterly SMITTEN as was I
Holy smokes, where did 36 years go?😏😏
I kno, right? My daughter turned 46 yrs old three days ago!!
This is one of the first episodes I remember watching of Dave's show and it hooked me instantly.
Cher is amazing, very underated as an actress too. Always great chemistry between her and Graham Norton too, shes been on his show several times ❤
That's the note she gave him. "Ask me about my acting career" and he did it quite well looking as if he hadn't read it yet and then glancing at it again at the end and throwing it away.
Two professionals acting professionally.
Cher REALLY threw Dave off his stride. Dave's inability to not let it affect him is part of the reason he was so watchable.
Great Interview, Classic TV...
Is he actually affected or was he good at playing it like he was affected for the sake of humor
@@mikeseal2266 That would be JAY LENO.
Dave wore his EMOTIONS on His Sleeve.
A Veteran of 20 In Person Shows & was on 1....
I used to love Dave but he became nasty after a while and when I stopped watching or caring except if one of my friends happen to be on the show. Only exception and only for their segment.
@@ChooseCompassion I kinda liked him best when he was at his nastiest. Felt real. I get tired of the dog and pony nice-nice show
Dave was showing how intimidated he could be by a guest 😁
Cher owns two of the top moments in Late Night history, this and her reunion with Sonny
In “The Story of Late Night”, Robert Morton mentioned that the NBC Standards and Practices people warned that the show couldn’t broadcast the whole word, but that the staff could choose between either of the syllables to make it in.
Of course, they went with the first syllable. ;)
I just gained a whole new respect for Cher.
Just now? You must have never seen Moonstruck?! Watch it! She is AMAZING (and Great movie!)

Dave’s at his best 😊
When I was taking singing lessons in my 20s my teacher had me sing Gypsies tramps and Theives to increase my range. I loved it and sang it well. Always loved Cher! Still do
Wow! She looks so, so great with that style short hair and less makeup. Just 😘
This was fun. She's great here, and proved to be a formidable actress over the years.
I was taken aback however with her reaction about Sonny. "Meh" I thought they had remained good friends thru the years. Her true feelings obviously shone through in her heart-wrenching eulogy to him after his death.
Thought the same exact thing.
Took them as a couple, quite a while to understand that the initial love they had was still there. Truly their business but it is Cher and Sonny and we got to share in their acceptance of the love they had for each other. Frankly,
once you have a child with a man that bond is still there after a divorce and life goes on. Only exception becomes if the Dad does not do right by the child and deal with his kid with love. Sonny did that. At the end game they knew that idea and I think Cher truly mourned his passing.
Life is complicated and you can't explain it with one "sit down" with someone. who is a stranger like Dave was to Cher,
. even if you are Cher.
They had lots of up and downs after the divorce.
After Cher called him an "ahole" the chemistry between them took off.
Would love to see these 2 together, they would've made a great couple. I can feel the chemistry bubbling. 😂😂😂
You can't be serious. Dave is toad.
Cher was radiantly beautiful at 40. I so wish she believed it. ❤
Suspect was a great movie-- Liam Neeson played the Suspect. Fabulous film -- don't know if it holds up 35 years later, but I saw it twice in the theater.
Cher and Madonna (later on) both threw Dave for a loop, but Cher still came off as likable and warm. (Madonna was just obnoxious.) Both instances made for good television, but I ended up liking Cher a whole lot more afterwards.
Madonna was obnoxious
She’s Always Been Honest I Think

lol Dave - _"You're the first person to call me that in person though. I mean I'm sure they muttered that on the way out"_
You can tell he's crazy about her and she is nothing like he thought she would be. Sitting here I can think of a million things I'd say to her and he's so taken with how striking she is he can't think of one.
So true.. he was like a tongue-tied teenage boy in her presence.
You're exactly right. He's so smitten and flustered, and we are too, omg so beautiful it's stunning.
What a great interview, loved it.
The interview it is so entertaining!
Cher is reputed to be a rather shy person when she's not acting or singing. That said, if you push her buttons, she WILL push back.
This was before her "comeback" album in 1989. Heart of Stone introduced a whole new generation to Cher and showed she's not just a star, but a superstar. She really got better with age. Forty year old Cher looked WAY hotter than 20 year old Cher.
Including the epilogue was a nice touch by this channel.
As an aside, my wife & I were recently reminiscing and she said, “I miss watching Dave.” Me too. I know he always compared himself to Johnny, but he had quite a run, and technically, crazy beard and all, is still at it to a degree.
Great interview. I've always thought Cher was beautiful, seeing this video I was memorized on how beautiful she is. Her voice her face and her actions put it over the top for me.

She’s a great artist ! I once was on her concert in L.A. she’s really the best !
I'm so glad this vid was posted. I missed this when it first aired. But I heard about it on morning radio. However, all I heard was that Cher had called Dave what she called him and that the interview went very bad. Cher came off terrible. Now, all these years later, I know the truth! And WOW! Cher looks incredible here. As for Dave - he looks LIKE DAVE!!
Most beautiful woman ever.
I always thought Cher was attractive, but she looked so naturally stunning. Her honesty is what threw Letterman, she answered the question honestly. For someone who has done a lot, she was extremely grounded and humble. His ego was showing in the introduction, feeling shunned and realistically it felt like he was putting her down from the get-go. Even his questions showed a lot of negativity. Getting Booed, kind of like Trolls wading in on an internet discussion. Cher came out way on top in my book.
When this aired I started B/E/E in RTC/NTC SanDiego... They were concluding the original filming of Top Gun... We were all so young, and had a clue about all things whole. What a different time.
