We did it this way through the 90s at leshwab Tire in Oregon U.S. it's called a recap and they are for industrial us mostly logging , farming . low speed us

Unfortunately the prices got closer and closer till it wasn't worth it. The prices of the new tyres weren't coming down though.

A tire use to be 31$ in the 70's. 1$ is the 70s is equivalent to 8 today. Go ahead and multiply 8 by 31. A set of 4 tires, would cost you...$992 on the low end. For a sedan 😂

I went to the tyre shop near me n asked if they would stick a tyre around my electric scooter they laughed and said no wont work 😊 I said to them ok I will be back to show you it working 😊 it looks like they took my advice because mine still works and today I see this vid today being about 3months later and still working ✌😎
Americans used to buy retreads in the 70's. Everyone switched to radial tires. Retreads were cheap, and I never had a bad one. I used retreads snow tires.

Also in the 70's when they made 5$ a hour they could still buy a house and a car in only a few years versus today where you make in excess 50k a year and can't afford jack. Tires back then also only lasted a few thousand miles, not the 30k or 80k like today. So much has changed, and comparably a new tire today is as much as a rethread back in the 70's if you account for inflation.

It’s called re-treading. A tyre can be re-treaded 1-2 times safely if done on time
Adding another layer changes the original size of the tire.
