Very clever and simple! Great engineering project!
@letun3481 thank you so much! I really appreciate the compliment and I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Good stuff
I might do it to mine I just got for Father’s Day
@txmexnittro thank you! That's a pretty cool father's day present!!! It works really good but if I had it to do over again, the mount I would use is the pontoon trolling motor mount for Newport. I didn't discover it until after I made my modification. Check it out if you decide to do this...it would make it a cleaner set-up. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!
Just to say brother what a great addition to your kayak adventures. A game changer to help get you smoothly and efficiently from here to there. Your complete install was successful as shown on your first water excursion and a good test would be during more stressful times during a tournament and see the reaction with your fishing time. Thanks for sharing your install it looks really awesome to your kayak can’t wait to see it in action At full speed, tight lines take care and God bless!
@granvillej3316 thank you my friend! I've got a tournament coming up Saturday, so I'll find out just how much of a help it will be. I think there will definitely be a learning curve, let's just hope that curve doesn't cost me fish 😆 I really want to do well this week. Thank you for watching and following my journey. You are very appreciated!!
Nice work! Trickin out ya ride . Looks good Jeff. I wish you much success with this on the water ! Be safe !
@fishingwithhouse thank you House! I'm excited to get it out this weekend. I have a tournament Saturday so I'll learn a lot about how it performs under stress 😬 😂. Thanks again!
Very cool addition hope to see it in action in a few days!
@Eightmile_Drifter thank you friend! Yes, you will see it for sure this weekend. I've got it registered already and some red/green nav lights on the front. I'm ready to go! Looking forward to seeing y'all!!!
That 's a great video, thanks for posting.
@RobBastien Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just fished a whole day with it over the weekend and was really impressed with how much it saved my legs! I appreciate you watching and commenting!
That is so cool. I have a PDL 120 and may put this on mine.
@B_Ritt70 I am glad you found this useful. I just fished a tournament on Saturday using the trolling motor all day. It was nice to not have Jello legs at the end of the day and I covered more water than I normally would. With that being said, there were situations where I wished I had my PDL unit. I'm going to make a video soon discussing the pros and cons of this setup, I hope you'll check it out. It worked great...and I am happy I have it, but it's definitely different. Thanks for watching!
I built me a center console and plate for my Vibe 125. Haven’t had a chance to try it out yet
That's awesome! It really makes a difference in certain bodies of water. And the cool part is you still have the option of peddling if you choose, assuming you have the peddle unit. I'd love to hear your thoughts after you try it out. Thank you for watching and commenting!
That is awesome
@davidsettle8456 thank you so much! I'm glad you appreciate it and I certainly appreciate you!
Awesome Jeff ! There’s no stopping you now! Well done sir! Just a thought- in addition to a disconnect would an on-off switch have any benifit?
@billreddochoutdoors5968 thank you my brother! I'm excited to get some more time with it. I'm going this weekend and fishing a river, so the current is going to be interesting. I haven't thought about a switch to be honest. For some reason when I was brainstorming this thing, a disconnect came to my mind and I never looked for anything else. I'll have to Google that. Thank you for watching and commenting. I always appreciate hearing from you!
Great video! Great editing! A very concise explanation of motorizing a kayak. I really wonder if I should motorize mine. I tend to go to 100 acre ponds with a lot of weeds. It's not a lot of distance to cover and I'm constantly raising the PDL drive to get through the mess. But maybe if I had a motor I would go to bigger waters? I'll be curious how this goes for you. How does it work on windy days? How does it work in reverse? How long does the battery last? It seems like the battery life will depend on how windy it is. How hard is it to untangle 20 pounds of weeds from the prop while the wind keeps pushing you deeper into the slop? There is a bit of a learning curve with this motor stuff so the real question for me is whether I prefer to keep things simple or add capabilities to my kayak. Thanks for a great video, Jeff!
Thank you so much! I'm happy you enjoyed it. Yeah, I'm gonna learn a lot about how well this performs once I'm in a variety of conditions. My plan for heavy weeds is to raise the motor and paddle. It's not ideal, but it's also my approach with the PDL unit, so the motor doesn't change that. I'll find out a lot more on Saturday, I have a tournament, so 9 hours on a river should provide some good info. Stay tuned.... I envision an after dark episode in the future 😂 thanks again! @jasonm1884
Dannnnng man. That’s upping the game BIG TIME. I’ve debated doing this later lol. Sheesh.
@thatfishingnoob yeah, it's a difference maker for some bodies of water. And it's a pretty easy install. I watched your frog only tournament a couple of nights ago, that's unique. I've never caught anything on a frog before, but I seldom ever throw one. Thank you for watching!!
@@yakkittymack yes sir! I even looked at the ePDL. Like you said, for some bodies of water it would be fantastic. I think overall it would help cover more water too. One thing I’ve been working on though is slowing down and presenting everything well before moving onto another spot. Tight lines sir!
It may be the camera but it looks like that propeller on that motor has a wobble. Someone else mentioned you may want to check your local game commission to see if you need to register your kayak being as it has a motor now. Usually it's cheaper than the ticket. Other than that your gona love that set up.
@monzsterman hello friend. Thank you for watching! You might be right about the wobble...do you reckon that might be the reason for the head vibration at the higher speeds? Yes, I have already licensed and registered the yak and I added some navigation lights to the front. She's legal now 😆
That can cause a wobble for sure. I noticed that in the video also. I have a motor that down video but you wouldn't have to do that just take the propeller nut off and make sure it's seated on the pin correctly. If it is run the motor without the propeller and see if the shaft is bent. if it is take it back and get another. If you still have a issue with head wobble after that try putting the motor deeper in the water to see if it goes away. I have run into that also. Good luck!
@@monzsterman thank you. I'll take the propeller off tomorrow and take a look at it. I'll experiment with depth too.
Nice addition to the kayak. Curious as to what battery did you go with for the kayak?
@trc_ok thank you very much! I am using an Epoch 100ah lithium battery. It's the same battery I use on my Bass Raider, so it's pulling double duty for me 😁 thanks for watching and commenting. Very appreciated! 👍
Are you able to provide a link for each of the parts?
@nilesthompson3510 thank you for watching and commenting, I really appreciate it! I can add those to the description. I'll need a couple of days to pull those together, but I will. Thanks again! 👍
@nilesthompson3510 Hello my friend and sorry for the delay. I have added links for the main items I used in the description of the video. Let me know if you end up making the same or similar modification.
I put a 150hp Merc on mine. I passed away soon after my maiden voyage.
@bubcat54 LMAO 🤣 love the sense of humor! Thank you for watching and commenting. Much appreciated!! 👍
I have the same set up. I love it I need to get a new plate.. lost it in a move
@RickHoffman777 that's awesome, so I guess I can't patent it now 🤣😂 I'm glad to hear you love having the motor. I'm anxious to find out if I'm gonna grow to prefer it over the PDL. Thank you for watching and commenting!!
is that a navarre insert that you used?
Yes it is! I love Navarre products. I've seen people make their own with cutting board, but it was easier for me to just order it and I knew it was going to be thick enough to provide support. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@yakkittymack Nice, I love the Navarre products as well, i buy all my replacement props from them because there cheaper. ive got a 120 im about to hook up a trolling motor to but like you said, its hard if not impossible to get any research done due to there either not being any info for the through the drive port installs, especially once they dropped the autopilot version of the 106 and 120s.
Good job, but there are two good points to keep in the Trotter that height.
1- you can reach it when you’re standing in the kayak
2-you can use it to pull yourself up.
Check out my kayak and how much fishing I do with it with the same set up you have with it slightly engineered differently
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I did check out your kayak and very nicely done sir! It's getting a bit late so I'll dig around some more tomorrow, but did you do a video on the actual modification? I saw the video you did after your test run where you got 5 hours from your battery. BTW, I am a sub of your channel! Tight lines and hope to hear more from you in the future!!
@@yakkittymack I’ve upgraded to a 100ah LiFo battery and I’m getting at least two days worth of fishing before I have to charge it. If I’m at a primitive campsite with no electricity. Although I charge it every time I get back home. Just in case.
By the way, your Trotter has a vibration at three and above speed. I had that happen to me on a 55 pound thrust Minnkota troll motor. Although mine may be the prop because I changed it out to a smaller one, so it can fit through that hole in the center of my kayak where the pedal drive used to go. I’ll probably switch it back to the original prop since I’m going to use that trolling motor on a 12 foot frontier Nucanoe.
Note: lesson learned, a 30 pound thrust and a 55 pound thrust only gets you more thrust, not more speed so it’s not worth carrying the extra weight.
Remember if a jerks set the hook.
