  • Hello y'all, in this episode of Yakkitty Mack After Dark, we talk about the benefits and drawbacks of modifying my kayak with a trolling motor. I discuss what I learned after a full day of tournament fishing with my OldTown Sportsman PDL converted to accept a trolling motor. Is it worth it?

    Cool pros and con video. I think you have the right idea getting the motor going now that the temps are so high. Running from spot to spot gives you a good chance to rest and re hydrate. In colder weather working the pedals will help warm you up.

      @Eightmile_Drifter thank you sir! Yeah, it will make a difference in the heat depending on the body of water. I have no plans on using it for our next tournament based on how you've described the landscape. However, depending on July water.... that will probably for sure be motor time! Thanks for watching friend!!

    I watched a tournament and all the anglers getting ready to start and once they said go I saw a significant difference in they way anglers travelled to their spot. An angler with a paddle went at it at full speed trying to keep up with those who were peddling but he had no chance against the motors. He worked very hard to keep up, but crossing lots of water I would assume he exhausted pretty quickly and by the time he got to his spot someone must have already arrived their and he had to rest before he started. Motors give you a much better movement over a large area of water and having paddle control you can turn your motor completely off and slowly paddle into position and like you’re great points control the way you disturb the water to fish! I’ve heard that Spot lock helps with getting you into position and staying there without drifting out of position. Gene the fluke master says he didn’t go fishing to go exercise anymore but to relax and focus on fishing lol! It’s great to be aware what is available and what’s going to help you be a better tournament angler every second counts and weight capacity could overcome your enjoyment and hurt your progress more than help and weight capacity could effect the mobility of the kayak! Hey brother thanks for sharing always appreciate your insight and informational videos keep up the great work and until the next tournament tight lines sir!

      @granvillej3316 You are very observant! Motors certainly have some distinct advantages and the technology they have on the higher-end models is pretty amazing. However, beyond health reasons, I cannot imagine a scenario where I would not want the option to peddle. Peddles are able to do things that motors cannot. That comes at a cost in terms of fatigue, but one that I am willing to endure. Every fisherman has their style and if I was a KVD type of angler, covering water fast....a motor would be perfect. But I'm a slow and methodical bank beater and peddles give me the hands-free control I need to do that and I'm able to manage vegetation a lot better. My 1st kayak was a paddle yak and I hated dealing with a paddle. My 3rd kayak....might just be an EPL if they ever bring that tech to the freshwater platforms. Thank you so much for watching and commenting, I so appreciate your support!!!!

    Very informative. As you know, I have a paddle kayak, but occasionally I wish I had a motor. I do enjoy fishing from a paddle kayak cuz I'm old school & it does give me some exercise. I definitely see the benefits of a motor for tournaments but with my back issues, I can only kayak fish about 4 hrs so I don't enter tournaments. Great video

      @ChesapeakeChris thank you sir. I really enjoy peddling, I'm not crazy about paddling! My hull isn't really suited for paddling. You should try a kayak kushion...they make them for the seat and back, might help you stay out longer without discomfort. Thanks again, I appreciate you as always!!

    Once again thanks for video. I did a similar mod on my ascend kayak with a trolling motor. But was unable to mount on the rear , so I side mounted with a Railblaza bracket. Just shy of 70 yrs it help save energy. lol. I also installed an Anchor wizard for my anchor system so I don’t drift as much. Overall I’m happy, nothing is perfect. Look forward to your next “juicy” video.

      @davidheiser1566 You're welcome! And thank you for watching!! I looked at the Railblaza system before I made my modification and was seriously considering that option, but my yak doesn't have thick plastic on the tank walls where I would need to mount it and I was concerned about that. I also looked at the Brocraft model that is very similar but drops into the rear-facing rod holders. Ultimately, I chose to keep everything up front. I turn 55 this year, so I understand saving energy. Thank you for watching as always. I appreciate you!!!!

    foot steering and a pwm is a must if you want full control of the trolling motor for hands free fishing :)

    • @yakkittymack
      @yakkittymack  Před měsícem

      @seewhyem you are so right! The issue is the PDL kayaks don't have foot rests. They are designed to use the peddle unit for resting your feet. Thank you so much for watching and commenting!

    Nice pro/con video. I was thinking as you were going thru the cons is if there was a way to have the best of both worlds. Was wondering if you found anything with the handle and shaft wobble on the motor?

    • @yakkittymack
      @yakkittymack  Před měsícem +1

      @monzsterman thank you my friend! So the vibration is still there. I took the prop off like you said and everything looked good... I didn't see a bend or anything and the prop looks good, so I'm not sure why it has the wobble / vibration? I should probably exchange it, just haven't had a chance to take it apart. I appreciate you watching!!

    Great video! Are you using a 12v or 24v battery?

      @yakkittymack  Před měsícem

      @SevenBrokenBar thank you so much! I am using a 12v 100 ah lithium battery. Epoch is the brand. I've had it about a year and it's been great so far. Thank you for watching and commenting! Much appreciated 👍
