Friends was one of my favorite shows growing up, so much so that I can still recite entire scenes line-for-line! I realized there were actually a TON of medical scenes throughout the series, such as Rachel AND Phoebe giving birth, Ross’ third nipple, and Joey’s kidney stones. Let’s take a look at how accurate these scenes were and see if Friends holds up 20+ years later!
I LOVE reading your comments and take your suggestions seriously. If there’s a subject you want me to discuss or something you’d like for me to react to, leave a comment down below. Many of my videos have been born out of suggestions directly from you, so don’t hold back!

Obviously using a real newborn isn't reasonable, especially for the health of the baby, but they're getting closer.

There are clearly a lot of people that don't know the context of this clip. It is from a satire show called the Daily Show. In most of the correspondent interviews the correspondents (like Desi Lydic) act in stupid, weird, or inappropriate ways based on the characterized versions of themselves they are playing. Doctor Mike definitely knew this and understood this before ever going on the show. He is a smart man who was in on the joke.

The woman in the background when Rachel was pushing is an actual RN - she was required to be there bc the ‘newborn actor’ was so small they had to have proper medical personnel for safety
Also - the birthing fluid used in the scene is snack jelly (usually grape bc it’s the right colour and consistency) which helps tiny actors self soothe bc it’s sweet and gentle for baby tummies

That part about everyone coming in was relatable, I was at a checkup at the ENT dept in my hospital, the department just opened and were accepting patients for free checkups so my family and I went.
A few years before this I had a nasty fall that gave me a long deep scar on my forehead that needed 17 stitches (thus earning me the nickname Potter) so I have medical history with them.

Everyone there at the women's clinic is so very sweet, very caring, even talked about extra freezing cause I usually need more then most people- thank you dentist, and the Dr. talking about and understanding so got the right amount. Don't feel shy about talking about this cause it's for your comfort and they are used to this!
My regular family doctor, an elderly man now doesn't do it anymore but did explain all my birth control options very well, telling which is probably best for me and why based on my needs and history. Doctors should also be open and talk about everything- just like Dr. Mike says 😀

That first moment of Mom holding the baby is called “skin to skin” It helps the mother and baby regulate their blood pressure, breathing, heart rate, even emotional responses and milk production. When the baby touches the mothers chest she has a physiological response to her child skin being against hers and the baby in turn has the same response. It’s a beautiful, self regulating, and natural process. I love you Dr. Mike, but I have PTSD from hospitals because I was sick my whole life so I went to the midwives for both babies, and they taught me a lot about skin to skin and vitamin deficiencies. They even saved my baby girls life when she had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck during the last seconds of labor, and helped my baby boy turn when he was breach. I wish that great doctors like you had environments closer to the midwife environment so we’d be able to have the experience with a licensed doctor on hand.

I had a 2 cm kidney stone in 2017 and my symptoms were nausea, vomiting, and lower right quadrant pain. My doctor said that if I had had the symptoms 5 years earlier, I would have been ruled an appy and had surgery. I was diagnosed through a CT scan and saved me from an unnecessary surgery. Thank goodness medicine has improved in time to make it easier to differentiate between kidney stones and appendicitis.

Hey, I'm curious how did they end up determining that's what you have? I've wondered if I have possibly been misdiagnosed with fibromyalgia when I might actually have this. My main symptoms that lead to the diagnosis was incredibly debilitating pain in my chest and ribcage which I ended up either bedridden for days or going to the emergency room where they didn't help me at all and said it's heartburn. I can tell you (and told them) with 100% certainty that it's not because A) I know what that feels like and B) I'm on a strict diet to avoid heartburn and IBS symptoms.
All my family doctor did to diagnose me with fibromyalgia was poke me in my pressure points (I already was diagnosed with MPS which explains the pressure points) and look at a picture of the muscular skeletal system that I printed out and I colored in where the pain was and it's severity. But she never did any further tests.

I can relate to having a lot of people in my hospital room to learn something. About 3 years ago, I was in the hospital for an intestinal blockage, but also had heart problems. They had me on a monitor, and one night, my heart rate jumped into the 240's. All the nurses came in to do an EKG (some had never done one before), and they were taking turns listening to my heart murmur (I have had a large tumor removed from my heart 5 years ago). I ended up going to Little Rock for a Coronary Ablation after I recovered from the blockage.
Another time when I was having my total hysterectomy (age 28) I had severe endometriosis. It took the doctor over 4 hours to cut everything apart and put it back in its' rightful place. He said by the time he closed me up, every surgeon and nurse had come in the O.R. to see me, and were shocked that I could have so much scar tissue and still sit up! I couldn't stand, and was using a wheelchair to get around. All of my organs were attached to each other in one mass of scar tissue from the internal bleeding. Including my intestines, bladder, ovaries, what was left of the uterus after the first hysterectomy attempt. etc. It was an experience for all involved for sure!!
