This Tribe Went to War For a Truly Disgusting Reason

  • I was reading a history book about Pohnpei called "Upon a Stone Altar" and it had a single page describing the four day purge they undertook before battle. It enthralled me so much I made this entire video based off that single page's prompt.
    If you're disgusted, good! So was I. But it was still something worth thinking about, because war is stupid, but I think it's pretty safe to say so are we.

      @almightysapling Před 2 měsíci +18

      Right, they change. But that doesn't lower their chances of survival. If that were true, those changes wouldn't persist.
      If they grow long feathers, it's precisely because they *don't* need to fly to survive. You're comparing them to birds that *do* have predators, which is silly.

    • @yaima3473
      @yaima3473 Před 2 měsíci +44

      @almightysapling It's called the handicap principle. Certain animals evolve a trait that gives them a disadvantage (like apeakcocks's train) because it acts as an honest signal of fitness. Basically, if a peacock can survive despite such a big handicap, then a peahen will be more likely to mate with them to boost their offsprings fitness (chance of passing on their genes).
      But the selection can go too far to the point where it does harm the male's long term survival. Rhinos are an example. Long horns are selected for, but it puts the adult males at greeater risk of poaching. You see examples in species with antlers where the males will die because their antlers get stuck in trees or begin ingrowing into their skull.
      The point of these traits is *only* to boost the chance of reproduction. Evolution doesnt care how long the animal lives after they pass on their genes, which is how they end up with detrimental traits that make long term survival a challenge. As long as the male lives long enough to have one offspring, it doesnt matter if their dimorphic trait results in them dying the next day.
      (Sorry for the essay, i dont get many chances to use my zooloogy degree lol).

    First of all; thank you for all the great work and videos.
    I fully understand how wonderful and amusing storytelling goes and you do a great job at it. Also, if that means bringing in bits and pieces from all over the area to make it more interesting and to add some context.
    You’re showing a beautiful, less known piece of the world.
    So, I do not mean this in a pedantic way. But, the thumbnail to highlight the video shows Kiribati warriors, who are on the far end of Micronesia and have very little to do with this story.
    Then why do I need to bring this up?
    Well… the Kiribati suits, weapons, way of fighting and navigation skills make for an amazing story of themselves. Which could be some great content for the future and is worth looking into! ;)

    I think this has something to do with living in an easy environment, which is why you often find these bizarre rituals in the tropics. When you environment is abundant and provides every necessity without much effort, humans tend to go a little crazy trying to artificially create struggle for themselves. There are similar things, though they tend to manifest as psychological more often than physical, among the upper middle class in America. Bret Weinstein was just singing the praises of polar plunges for a very similar reason.
    Conversely, in temperate areas with heavy seasonality, the people’s cultural focus is on frugality, stoicism, hard work, preparation for winter, dedication to thriving etc. as there is really struggle to survive woven into everyday life, no need to create artificial struggle. Wars are usually over land as land is the only way to secure your family’s continued existence.

    Social mores, especially those dealing with violence, are always deeply fascinating. Often times people like to find ways of othereing and alienating other people based on culture and customs that look and feel very foreign and strange to their sensibilities, where if you just take a few steps further into trying to think and understand those customs they all shake out to be, at their core, very human and understandable; I feel like Evan does a great job in showing that. After all, much as some of us don't want to admit it, if something is universally funny at a base level, why wouldn't it become important somewhere, for some reason?

    This video really reminds me of the now long-gone, forsaken old practice we Dayaks on Borneo used to engage in. It was a means to prove one's worth to marry a noble bride or demonstrate one's might, aiming to become a noteworthy legend.
    Headhunting activity was one of the requirements, especially if the victims were from tribes or people living in faraway places; it was as valuable as seashells to those deep inside the jungle interior.
    In turn, these needless bloodshed would ignite constant, unending tribal warfare. Yet, in some odd way, nobody tried to contemplate why it persisted until the arrival of the missionaries.
    Then this video comes in and gives me the idea that perhaps my ancestors were just trying to find meaning in life and accomplish something noteworthy, all while fulfilling their thirst for vengeance or bloodlust, thus making it part of tradition. This continued until our tribe gradually converted to the new Abrahamic faiths.

    We still play those games with each other just not as explicitly... I can think of several times during the course of my life where I endured pain, even inflicted pain on myself intentionally just to spite someone whose M.O. was domination through the infliction of suffering. The idea is that if you can take the pain willingly, even happily (takes a lot of practice and is ultimately very damaging but I think it's our instinct to do these things) then it challenges the power of the ones inflicting it and eggs them on to really bring it. AKA go hard or go home, give me all you got, this is a good way to test whether someone is actually willing to go all in for that victory over you. I see it as they should have to earn it. And if they go as far as committing a grievous enough injury/murder then they end up losing status anyway, and alerting others to the fact that they're bad business/lack discipline. Some may see this as provoking someone unfairly but what they fail to realize is that they assume they have a right to act in ways that are condescending to others and if the others don't fight back then they deserve it so anyone with that mentality better be ready to get continually challenged and "provoked" And even the part about ultimately making peace with them and becoming "friends" at least sometimes... not all the time, holds true as long as humility and mutual respect is established. But if not, an enemy is just an enemy.

    I know as anthropologists, the discipline kept trying to teach that we had to be unbiased in our ethnography because our worldview comes from an upbringing separate from the observed group's.... But I always said fuck that.
    Minimal observer bias is really important when REPORTING on a culture, but empathy for others should always be your moral compass and guide through the lens of humanities, and I find it correct to call out fundamental violations of that when being candid or in service of human rights. I find war to always be a violation of that and should always be held against all people.

      Cultural relativism is necessary while studying other cultures in anthropology, but it shouldn't be that you relinquish your own values when it comes to living life and holding opinions as a member of your own society.
      It has been many years since I studied a few subjects on it back at university, but I've heard that the anthropology departments have been taken over by the sociologists. Certainly I have seen some stuff coming out from the field where they seem to practice more cultural advocacy over relativism and they will happily distort, remove and or reinterpret facts to push narratives over truth. Actually thinking about it, that seems to also be the case for a lot of other disciplines too nowadays!
