The CIA's Secret Genocide in Guatemala

  • The story of the banana republics, the United Fruit company, or the CIA intervention of the 40s and 50s are virtually impossible stories to tell correctly. They are simply too big and complicated. Mixing them together as I've done here means leaving out a vast majority of the story. A thousand unmentioned thoughts. I think, maybe, with around 3 hours or so you could start to get a basic handle on it, but I've done my best with twenty minutes. Hopefully it helps to at least start painting the picture.

What a complicated web we weave, we humans. I live here in California, wine country, and watch as our country is now going down many of the same lanes as those you showed in this episode. All the hindsight in the world, all the studying of history and knowing where we came from, sometimes cannot stop the juggernaut that is thrusting us forward into the doom we already see so clearly in the future. The near future. I am 67, very sick, so I won’t have to live in that future, but those I love will, especially my children and their children. Anyway, you are amazing as usual, I knew some of this, but not the details in the way that you showed them and I am grateful for that. Keep doing what you’re doing and I will add you to my Patreon. I only support two other people. But I want to see you continue. Not to puff up your ego or anything, but you are one of those rare voices in the wilderness we so desperately need. Thank you, not just for the education and the information, but the sheer joy of hearing your lyrical voice, and your poetic words describe both the joy and the pain, as well as the beauty of wherever it is that you are speaking from. Thank you, and many blessings.

I feel so ashamed. In the 1980s I spent a short tour in Guatemala with the US Air Force. I believed then, as I always had, that I was on the side of right and freedom. I had no knowledge of Guatemala's history or its people. Videos like this continue to rub my face in the United States' despicable behavior.

Being an American citizen is like being the child of a mob boss. You’re lied to until the dust settles, and everything is done “for your sake” or “for the sake of freedom”. Whether it’s your own countrymen that die to make the rich richer, or innocents abroad, the grief caused, and eventually revealed, is so severe that you almost fear to know the truth. My grandfather worked for the USAF during the Vietnam war in public relations, and he was often the one who would have to break the bad news to people who’s sons were never coming home. My father still remembers the rage my grandfather felt when the Pentagon Papers were put out in the public, when he saw that all those coffins, obituaries, grieving families *he had personally attended to* were for nothing. I can’t imagine being on the receiving end of my country’s actions. I cannot comprehend what it must have been like for the people of Guatemala and other “Banana republics”. All I know is that none of this should have happened. Corporate lobbying has a fucking bodycount, both within the states and outside of it, and we as a nation will never live up to our own founding principles until we get rid of it. All I can do is hope that eventually, the people of Guatemala and the other nations we hurt without reason might heal past the scars we have left. As an American, I wish I could apologize on behalf of my country, but I can do so no more than the child of a mob boss can apologize to their fathers victims.

I'm a Guatemalan and an American (Dad Guatemalan and mom American) and, seeing all this deeply saddens me. I visited Guatemala last year and I heard a story that happened right near our home village of soldiers decapitating the locals. That period in our history is wrought with strife and hardship. To think that the greed of a few caused so much suffering for my family in Guatemala is unforgivable. I wonder what lives my family could have had in Guatemala if they were given a chance to succeed but, now I have to think about how to get my younger brothers and sister to America. The opportunities there for success are far and few between and because of the decisions of these men and their greed I, their fellow American will suffer for it. I love America and I consider myself an American through and through but the way the CIA has treated not only the country of Guatemala, but also other countries in the middle east, is not what this country stands for. Unfortunately it doesn't seem like anyone cares. I think the CIA will keep on doing this until they are regulated. How many documents like MK-Ultra have to be released before they are stopped? There are decisions that should be open to the public, there shouldn't be this feeling of invulnerability in the CIA. They are not above the law, they are not above human rights and, they are not above democracy. As Americans, we above all, should uphold these values.

Solution: As Americans, ensure that when you think you are represented, you are certain what you want to be resented as and how you want to be presented to the world.
As citizens of whatever country we find ourselves occupying, we must remove the blinder of survival, victim-hood and irresponsibility. Too long have we sold good sense and dignity for a plate of victuals.
"Just because that is how it is doesn't mean that is how it has to be."
Accepting this truth and carefully working out solutions cognizant of the struggle and times we inhabit will see better days return. Even if they don't come in our time, we can bequeath the tools for liberty to posterity and that is a fight worth fighting.

Guatemalan here, living in the States. A marvelous analysis of the bloody hierarchies that have defined that nation since Pedro de Alvarado conquered the southern Maya kingdoms in the early 1500s. I moved away when I was 7, but even as a child younger than 7-years-old the racial hierarchies of Guatemala were so stark, so in-your-face, that a small child could understand them quite quickly. The white people lived in the nice "zonas" of Guatemala City, with the skyscrapers and the verdant foliage right next to the mountainsides and the airport. The Ladinos--which my family belonged to--were in the less nice "zonas" with the cinder block houses near the "barrancos" or canyons, and where the trees didn't grow as big and tall. The "Indios" or Maya, lived IN the "barrancos," in tin shacks with no running water, filled with crime and filth. These hierarchies were even worse in the countryside. I still remember that all these years later.

Back in the mid 90's I worked at a food factory in Northern California. There are a lot of these north of the Golden Gate. Making those granola bars and organic cookies you all like.
One of my co-workers was an older Guatemalan woman. She kind of stood out next to all the hippies and skaters that worked there. She would admonish us for cursing. And give us a a scolding when she knew we were smoking pot on breaks.
I learned a lot of Spanish working next to her in the production line. Well functional factory Spanish. I still don't know conjugation or cases.
She ended up coming to our house on weekends a few times. A place where I and several other workers lived in a 4 bedroom with a big yard, so we had informal get togethers often.
Over a few beers she loosened up and told us about her life in Guatemala once.
Before she came to the US she was a nurse. Sounded like she was a head nurse in an ER. So she saw a lot of badly hurt people as a result of the death squads there.
She was in her 50's or 60's in the mid 90s, so she had seen stuff going back to the 60's at least.
She never said how, but one day she had found out that her husband was one of the main people in the death squads.
The people she had been treating were his victims.
She cried through the next part. Telling us how she left her children behind and went to America. Because she knew she couldn't hold her tongue, and she did not doubt she would be killed if she said anything. Her kids were our age (meaning 20's-30's) so she didn't leave babies behind. She had to clarify this because she did say she left her babies at first.
She was mad at herself for not seeing the signs over several decades. But she was used to men doing their own thing and not being home all the time.
Besides how awful this makes me feel that our tax dollars were used by our government to destroy so many lives just so a few could profit.
It also taught me not to make assumptions about people. Especially immigrants.
A lot of people come to the US leave significant careers behind. They end up being carpenters or janitors or working in restaurants.
I also used to work with a guy who was a former professor in Fiji.
Another guy was a Engineer in Mexico.
Either way I still don't buy Chiquita.

Wow!!! such an Anti-American group of people here. Of course, all people exploit others and resources for profit, power and gain, no race is exempt. It's daily life for everyone that works to make their way. You are scamming or putting your burden on your government, your family, spouse or someone else if you don't work. With the population explosion of the last few centuries do you believe there was a better way? It's certain that things would have been much worse with no means of control while population grew and that someone else would have taken the reins leading to an even worse scenario. I, in no way condone mistreating anyone, but there are a lot of people on this earth and things are going to happen. Working for something better is very important. Presenting the past in a way that stirs hate and division is not the way. People of all times and places have tested their limits and always push things to the very edge. You have described the darker side of human nature that exists in all of us. I really disagree with this modern liberal method of zeroing in on a certain race or group of people to lay blame as you have. The hate, division and mistrust gained will eventually be the end of this world. Knowledge without wisdom is an extremely dangerous thing. Almost all of the comments are hating on the country, maybe you are not a US citizen or don't have children and grandchildren that live and will grow up here in the climate of hate and distrust you are helping to create.

Wow!!! such an Anti-American group of people here.

Why are we always shown as the bad guys!?" to which he replied "Haven't you always been? Like, in real life? Don't you know all the terrible things you've done to the rest of the world?"
This particular atrocity holds special interest for me, because the man who perpetrated it on the CIA's end was Allen Dulles, who was born and raised in my county seat of Watertown, NY. He was also the man responsible for the Cold War policy of "Containment," which was used to justify a lot of our actions throughout that era. The man wholeheartedly embraced a belief of "America First," and if he'd had his way, we probably would have been much more overt in our imperialist behavior.

I am so glad CZcams recommended me this video. My parents fled Guatemala during the 70s because of the war, but I didn’t learn about the US involvement until college. It made me furious then to know that the American foreign policy establishment of the 1950s, many of whom are the parents and grandparents of the foreign policy establishment now, were willing to cause so much suffering for no reason other than to protect private interests. It still makes me furious to this day that so many continue to demonize Guatemalans and other Latin Americans as lazy or backward, as if the United States isn’t also culpable for the miserable conditions that cause so many to flee.
The only comment I would make is minor and stylistic. Why refer to the presidents of Guatemala as “presidente” when the rest of the video is in English? It probably isn’t your intention, but I think it makes the country and its system of government sound more exotic than it is. After all, the Guatemalan republics after 1871 had constitutions that were based off the United States constitution. And the idea of a wealthy white planter lording over an exploitative, racialized “democracy” is hardly unique to Latin America. But again, minor. Appreciate your decision to cover this history. It’s important.

When Michael Pence said Latin Americans should respect our borders the way we have respected theirs, I had to laugh.

@@MissCleo24 Warlords everywhere love the words 'non interventionalist.' As a Wixarika descendant who was named after a western biblical figure, I find your words to be woefully naïve. Buy your rifle and train yourself in hopes that you never need to use the knowledge.

It's painful how people don't see - maybe refuse to see - what the 'border crisis' is really about. The constantly fluctuating policy of 'let them in, kick them out' is the intended result - we set fire to their houses, shepherd them over here to exploit them for sub-minimum wages (after all, if they're not even legally here, the law won't protect them from being unpaid), and if they speak out, the full force of the law shows up to boot them right back to our doorstep with everything still on fire. The point was never about 'what's the ethics of immigration', the point was always how to put the squeeze to powerless people so their only choice gets to be 'slave away in their own country (which our companies own) or slave away in our country'. The methodology through which the US turns the vast majority of a hemisphere's population into an underclass.

A chilling and terrifying tale, well told. Human history and the present consequences of the same, are damning indeed.

Dumbfounded, shocked and astonished especially when I see "Banana Republic" at the local malls. Most people would think it's a tropical clothing store. Thanks for the education.
