How to Apologize to Your Dog

  • We’ve all been there. You accidentally hurt your dog. Perhaps you unintentionally step on their tail, stumble over them, or shout at them.
Now, of course you feel bad about your actions, and want things to go back to normal.
Apologizing to your dog is the best way to keep your relationship strong after you’ve committed a canine offence.
But how do you tell your dog you’re sorry? And even if you do, will a dog understand when you apologize?
It is important to remember that dogs are very different species with their own distinctive ways of thinking.
While they are intelligent animals, they don’t have the same concept of apologizing as humans do.
However, if we do something harmful to our dog, then showing them that we didn't mean to hurt them is very important. Dogs may not be able to understand an apology in the human sense, but they can feel love and affection. The key is to reconnect with your dog, reassuring them that you pose no threat and harbor no anger towards them.
Researchers have found that the best way to apologize to a dog is to speak in a baby voice. Dogs are actually more responsive and prefer being spoken in this way, so speaking in a baby voice will confirm that they did nothing wrong and that you are not a threat.
And while you may be tempted to hug or kiss your pet to apologize, this is often not a good idea. For many dogs, going for a big hug or brining our face close to them could be perceived as a threat.
How long do dogs stay angry?
Due to how short-term memory works in canines, dogs forget one-off bad events fairly quickly.
So if you accidentally step on a dog’s tail and apologize, the dog won’t hold a grudge against you. However, dogs remember abuse and repeated mistreatment for the rest of their lives. This is because dogs also have associative memories. Your dog will learn through experience that you are a threat. This doesn’t mean that the dog is holding a grudge; it is just that the dog is merely keeping itself safe. They are trying to protect themselves and prevent a traumatic event from reoccurring.
So while your dog won't remember genuine accidents and honest mistakes, they'll remember abuse and a routine of negativity.
How to know if your dog has forgiven you
If you're concerned that your dog may be holding a grudge against you for something, it's important to observe their behavior.
If your dog avoids making eye contact with you after a negative experience, it may be an indication that they are still processing what happened and don’t feel safe around you yet. A dog who pointedly looks away and avoids eye contact is usually trying to avoid any kind of interaction, good or bad. You often notice this in dogs recently rescued from negative or traumatic situations. Likewise, if your pet doesn’t respond to your commands, it may be a sign they still don’t trust you enough to want to follow your instructions.
On the contrary, if your dog shows relaxed body language and shows no signs of fear or anxiety when you're in their presence, it's a good sign that they have forgiven you. Even better, if your dog approaches you, licks you, wags their tail, and wants to play or cuddle with you, it's a clear sign that they have moved past the incident and feel comfortable in your presence once again.
Common actions that could damage your dog's trust
There are several ways you might inadvertently damage the trust between you and your canine friend.
If you regularly force your dog to do things they don't want to do, it can create distance between you and your pet. Common examples are teasing them, pulling on their tail, or forcing them to be around other aggressive dogs when they don’t want to be.
Likewise, dogs dislike when you frequently take away their resources. Using their beloved bones and toys as a means of control should be avoided. Refrain from taking and withholding their toys from them.
Constantly yelling or even hitting your dog can also definitely damage their trust. It is important to remember that reward-based training is far more effective than physical punishment. Reward based training helps build trust and strong bond between dogs and their owners.
If your dog doesn't want to be hugged or interact with your neighbor’s boisterous kid, respect their boundaries and avoid forcing them into uncomfortable situations.
How to show your dog affection so they know you still love them
Once you’ve apologized to your dog by talking in a friendly voice, you may find that your dog is still distant from you.
This could happen especially after a serious incident or previous trauma they’ve experienced.
To regain your dog’s trust, spend time actively being kind to them. Pet them, take them out to do what they love… play, run and chase! Binge-watch some TV from your bean bag chair. Be gentle around them and avoid loud noises that frighten your pet. Avoid punishments or harsh discipline. Perhaps the best way to show your dog affection is to simply give them attention.

My dog is a little tank. When I accidentally clonk her as she runs under my feet, I immediately go into apologetic baby voice, and she's just looking at me like "whut?". I treat her like fine china but really she's made of bricks.
Another time I was playing with my father in law's dog and I stepped on her foot. She yelped and then immediately came to me for comfort. It was like she didn't associate me as the cause of her pain she just though "Pain! Go to friend!". I was still so apologetic.

I apologize to my dogs when I do something clumsy, forget something they were expecting, get after the wrong dog and all those sorts of things. They get it right away. I don't talk baby talk, but I do use a tone that's mainly reserved for apologies. The funny thing Is, I've used it now and then on strange dogs and even other kinds of animals, and it works for them, too. Except cats. Cats don't care if you're sorry. You will pay.

Dog's official apologies, in their own language, is a fake sneeze.
When they're playing and one of them hurts the other accidentally (and the victim cries, growls or gives some clear signal it was too much), the other one usually answers by faking sneezes a few times. Normally, the victim will sneeze back as an "apologies accepted".

Different dogs have different strengths. As a child, we had a brilliant collie who usually could be left alone in the house without getting into trouble.
If she did something wrong while we were out, we invariably came home to a crying apologizing groveling dog; we then knew to go look through the house to find out what happened and go easy on the dog who had already punished herself. Holler at her JUST a bit so she knows to stop worrying about the punishment that was due. What a magnificent dog!

I've accidently stepped on his foot a few times and he's always forgiven me instantly letting me hug and kiss him on the top of his head. He was attacked once by a German Shepard who lived next door. On the way to the emergency vet he was in horrible pain his lip was torn halfway off and he was bitten and swollen all over. He was on my lap barley moving but when my boyfriend at the time said " how much are you willing to pay before " i didn't let him finish the sentence and said" it doesn't matter what it costs I'll pay anything " he replied " there has to be an amount your not willing to go over he's just a dog. My dog raised his head and looked at him with a look I have never seen before. You could tell he completely understood. My boyfriend even said " its like he understands me." Needless to say he's not my boyfriend anymore. He always said i loved that dog more then him. ( He was right)

Eg, generally when you apologise your voice goes higher. If we're on a walk and I accidently bump into her or step on her foot she'll look up at me questioningly and then when I say sorry (often just out of instinct) she'll wag her tail and return to normal.

My golden retriever likes to follow me around and guard me. She usually lies in the threshold of whichever is the primary door to the room i’m in but if it’s a more open space and I’m in a spot for a little while - say if I’m cleaning something for instance - she will often lie right across my feet or occasionally behind me. She can sometimes do this if she was lying across the doorway and then someone else enters the room and she will move to me and place herself between me and the person. If my back is to them or I did’t notice them enter because I had headphones on she will lie directly behind my feet and I won’t know she’s there until I step back on to her. This has happened a few times now and each time she immediately apologises to me! Like ‘I’m sorry mama I must have done something bad for you to punish me!’ Which is really weird as I’ve had her since a puppy and never used negative reinforcement ever. It breaks my heart. Im always instantly crouched down saying ‘I’m so sorry my baby!’ And giving her loads of fuss and she will always shower me with kisses and roll over and give me her belly to rub. I don’t know how I got such a special girl but I don’t take for granted for a second how amazing she is or how lucky I am.

My current dog is full of joy and energy, and I play with him a lot, but I feel I'm not as carefree as I was when I adopted my first dog. I try to show joy and playfulness, but I worry my dog might sense it's not always 100% genuine. I worry a lot about him, because I'm traumatised, so I'm always hyper vigilant about things that might happen. This video says that if a dog is relaxed then that's a good sign, and my dog is, so I hope he doesn't sense all my sadness and worry. I so want him to have the best life.

I understand! I feel bad crying in front of my dog and yet he’ll come lick my tears away and make me laugh. I tell him it’s not for him to take on. That you took the time to write this and are so concerned about making sure yours feels enough joy and safety definitely demonstrates that he’s in good hands and you’re lucky to have each other. It’s ok to feel how U feel after trauma. I’d suggest being as gentle with yourself as you would be with your dog if the roles were reversed. I’m sure you wouldn’t want him to feel guilty or concerned cause they’re going through human stuff. You would just be there with them knowing that it’s love’s presence healing. We’re all doing the best we can. Thank you for opening your heart and home to him! 💓

    baby talk tone of voice?
    glad to hear it .
I do not own a pet of my own and never have, so this is all new territory for me
i was house and dog sitting for a friend of mine who has an ADORABLE jack Russell Maltese cross, and i accidentally opened the door in her face when we were going out for a walk at night and i had turned out the lights first.
    BIG MISTAKE
    she yelped in fright
and i baby talked - not goo goo but in that tone of voice - to her because she is so, so cute
this appears to be the right thing to have done
    thanks for this.

I would sometimes accidentally step on my dog's tail, especially when he would hover around my feet while preparing his meals. If that did happen, I would get down on the floor and roll on my back, and my dog would always get the message "I'm sorry" and come over for licks and pets. No harm, no foul. They are smart enough to know the difference between intentional harm and "oops, I made a mistake" and babytalk/submissive behavior from the owner is a sign of apology after an accident.

Its less about a "baby" voice and more about having a special tone when you are talking to your dog. They don't necessarily understand words but more so the tones and cadence in what you are saying. Talking in this way just to your dog in this way helps them filter when you are talking to someone or something else versus directly to them.

Dogs feel guilty or shame!!! My family had a dog that adored us. She was in our farm as guard. Very agressive toward strangers but extremelly kind to us. One day my dad put on the white clothes to take care of the bees. Those like astronauts, covering the head. She didn't recognized him and came to attack. When she understood that it was my dad, she got so ashamed that she layed down at his feet crying, she urined herself too. She was very emotional clearly because she discovered her mistake, going to attack to my dad. He just conforted her with kind voice and hugs.

Certainly! The question of whether dogs can feel guilt is a topic that has been explored by both scientists and pet owners. While dogs do experience emotions, the interpretation of these emotions can vary. The idea of guilt in dogs is often linked to their behavior when they've done something they know is not allowed.

My honest 2 cents: The baby voice does nothing. When you are actually sorry, your body releases certain chemicals that the dog can smell and actually understand you didn´t meant to hurt it. They also hear that in the tone change of the voice, so just calmly politely say "I´m sorry pal!" and maybe pat him on the head if he usually likes that.
They will get it, dogs are way emotionally smarter than most of their owners. (me not excluded)

Treating your spouse as well as you treat your pet and treating yourself as well as you treat your children (or loved ones in general) are common pieces of advice that seem like common sense but most people do not follow until it's pointed out to them. Even very selfish people usually fail to think of themselves as a "person" and are selfish in that they indulge in (often irresponsible) pleasures, not that they actually care for themselves.
(And of course there are people who abuse pets, children and "loved" ones- the advice is general, but not universal. Some people are just trashy.)
