Here is how you to say "I love you" in dog language.
You absolutely love your dog, and you’re not afraid to show it. But all the toys, comfy beds, treats, and fancy collars can’t let your pet know just how special they are to you.
In this video, we’ll show you 9 ways to tell your dog you love them in language they’re sure to understand
#1. Put down your phone when you walk into the house.
Your dog needs some face-to-face interaction with you when you come home.
This is because they don’t know what a cell phone is. But they do know they don’t want to compete with it.
That’s why the first way to tell your dog you love them is to give them your full attention when you walk in the door.
Oftentimes when we are with our dogs, we are staring at our phone at the same time. Whether you’re on a walk around the block or snuggling on the couch, it’s best to give 100 percent of your attention to your pet.
#2. Respect your dog’s nature.
Many dog owners discourage their dogs from certain inherent behaviors such as eating dirt, sniffing urine and sniffing each other from behind. In these situations, we are not caring for our furry friends, but preventing them from their own nature. This can cause anxiety and confusion.
It is important that you love your dog for who they are.
#3. Rub their ears
Dog experts say that the ears of a dog are one of three nerve centers in their bodies. When you rub a dog behind the ears, a sense of pleasure goes through their entire body. This is extremely relaxing. Just like when you rub their belly - another part of your dog that has extremely sensitive nerve endings.
That’s why when you rub the ears of your dog or rub their belly, they close their eyes and drift off into doggie heaven.
The other nerve center for a dog’s pleasure is between its toes!
#4. Lean in when you talk to them
The best way to tell your dog you love them is to lean into them - and then let them lean into you.
Even though it’s tempting, full-body hugs aren’t good for dogs. A hug is usually threatening or unwelcome to them, especially if they feel trapped.
Leaning into a dog and then letting them lean into you is a much better way to bond.
Displays of affection like this are often overlooked and confused with other behaviors, so don’t ignore their hugs. Lean back on them for a moment, and let them know you love them too.
Don’t push them away or crush them. Just the right amount of lean will demonstrate that you trust them.
#5. Look into their eyes
According to researchers at Duke University, you should make eye contact with your dog when you are cuddling with them.
Studies have shown that making eye contact while cuddling with your dog releases a hormone in them known as oxytocin.
Oxytocin, also known as the love hormone, literally bonds you with your dog like a mother and baby.
So the next time you and your dog are snuggling - look them right in the eye.
#6. Prepare their favorite food.
Feeding and love go together perfectly when it comes to showing your dog you love them. So it should be no surprise that if you make a special dish for your dog, they will love you for it. And this doesn’t mean feeding them table scraps, which can eventually harm your dog’s health.
Or feeding them too many treats, which can also make them overweight.
Preparing a meal for your best friend is also a great way to tell them that you love them too.
#7. Raise your eyebrows when you see your dog.
This one that comes from Japanese behavioral scientists.
They explain in their research that when a dog raises their eyebrows and sticks out their tongue, they are relaxed and happy.
Scientific studies have shown that dogs can differentiate between human emotions from facial expressions. You can try to hide your feelings, but your dog can read your emotions from what’s written on your face.
So greeting your dog at the door with raised eyebrows and a relaxed smile shows your canine how happy you are to see them.
#8. Talk to your dog using your dog voice
A study published in the journal of Science found that dogs understand a little bit more about human speech than we think.
Believe it or not, when scientists studied dogs using an MRI scanner, they found something interesting.
That dogs recognized not only words of praise, but a praising voice as well. So dogs will not only listen to the tone of your voice - but the words of praise at the same time.
So your tone of voice and choice of words are another one of the 9 ways you can literally tell your dog you love them.
#9. Let your dog snuggle with you when you get the chance.
Snuggling is awesome for dogs, but never go in for the big hug because they think you might attack them.

My other dog played along and he became intrigued - now its a daily part of our routine - about 3 times a day we do the shell game and the muffin tin game. I took in a rescue dog I was just going to " foster" a year and a 1/2 ago. Fell in love! She was very abused and did not trust. It took me a good 3 months to earn ANY trust with her. It was over a year before she would climb up in my bed. Now she sleeps with me and snuggles me awake every morning. She is so happy to see me when I get home and is right at the door! She has changed so much with some love and understanding. I feel blessed to be part of it!

Similar situation for me. My dog was very aggressive to basically everyone, but he chose me for some reason, so I took him in. Would try to bite people if they walked near his food, now I can take it out of his mouth and put my head near his bowl. He became very overprotective of me and when I first started taking him into the dog park he would sit on my foot, not let me move and growl at all the other dogs, he'd also used to growl at other people on walks. Now he's the friendliest dog at the park, and he will try to run to strangers to get a cuddle from them. He was a severely abused dog, always blows my mind what love can do for them. I always wished I had photos or videos of what he used to be like, but I'm also not the type of person to take footage of a stressed animal lol. Last few months I've adopted a second dog and they can now eat with their bowls right next to each other. 4 years ago there would've been blood everywhere.

This has really benefitted my relationship with my dog. I decided to look into his eyes often and once a day for a minute or so. After less than a week he was following me around for a while every day, and sitting with me more often. He trusts me more than he used to, he comes to the door to see me more often than he used to. Thank you SO much!!!
He is getting quite old and we may need to say good bye to him in a while… so this type of improvement in our relationship is even more welcome!
I understand that dogs often hate full body hugs but as an owner of a small dog breed my dog is on me 24/7, often under my shirt when she's cold instead of the many blankets. I've always given her tight hug and kisses in the head while I do so (kinda like that little girl and the Chihuahua in the video) instead of pushing away from me/biting or snapping she has always pushed more into me as if she was trying to hug me in return. So I'd like to say that some dog enjoy hugs 😌
My Boston-chihuahua mix is also glued to me 24/7. He’ll usually burrow under the covers and sleep next to me, but sometimes he wants to be held like a teddy bear lol.

it needn't apply to all dogs yk and thats okay, there are many ways to show your dog you love him/her. my dog is a hugger and a sensitive pup who will pull my face just to stare into my eyes. every dog is unique, and only you as the dog parent will know what works for your doggo. cheers

It depends on the kind of eye contact you make, just like with us. Make eye contact while thinking or saying you love your dog. The muscles around your eyes will soften and your dog will understand what you're saying. If they don't know what you're saying when you make eye contact because you're not being clear, they'll interpret it as your not being happy with them, so they look away to show they're submissive to you.
Ahhhh my little buddy deserves as much love as he can get because he is such a great little dog.
I love little Rudy and always try to show him I love him by aways saying hello to him and letting him be himself.
He always hugs me and I never turn him away.
I wish I could tell him how much I love him because he means the world to me.
I will do all I can to show him I love him and he relies on me so I want him to know he is a great little buddy.

That was a great learning video. I have seen this when working a dog kennel. This was a great way to explain dog behavior. We just recently got a female 2 year old 1/2 pit bull & retriever. We never had a female dog before. She is so much like this way of seeing how they react. Love this! 🙋
I lost my dog about a month ago to cancer. There’s still a huge void, and I miss him. I remember when he was alive if I was crying he’d come over and shove his head through my armpit trying to get hugs. I will never forget him, no matter how much time passes. I miss you buddy.😌

I wouldn't try to replace him, you just can't replace personality with looks.
Let time pass or get another dog at your own pace, it's important to be in the right mind set before getting another dog, just like getting your first dog you need to be ready emotionally.
You can see so many examples in tv shows like "It's me or the dog" where dog owners try and replace their dogs, only for their new dog being confused and miss behaving because the owner tried to "force" their personality.
It sucks, but it's the reality of nature, he made a strong impression in you and will always live on in your memories.

Just like the tone of your voice it depends how you do it. My dog I scratch behind her ears then go for a chin rub (letting me move her head up) and she is more then happy to make eye contact. If I tried jamming my face at her she would probably bite my nose.

I love videos and articles like this. Not only does it relax me when I get wound up from the pandemic and politics and crime but it helps me have a better relationship with my best friend. And yeah i literally mean my best friend. I love my shepsky SO much. He is so loyal and my grandpa who I care for calls him my shadow lol and dogs are just the best. He checks on my grandpa for me and sleeps in the room with him and watches out for him when he's in the shower and such. No other animal has that kind of duty and love for those they live with.
Great post I love my baby girl (Nala) more than life itself and she loves me just as much! She is so human at times that I tend to forget she’s a canine. I thought I was rescuing her but in reality she rescued me! An Automatium concerning Nala EVERYONE knows she is the only option in every situation and that they should just pack their bags and hit the road.

My dog did that too. I tripped over a cord and went down fast and hard. She flew off the couch and was right in my face in about 3 seconds. My dog loves me. When we first rescued him he was about 18 mos. old. During the 1st week on a beautiful warm January day I took him to the boat slips. He was excited and managed to run off the end of the dock into the lake. He went under and appeared terrified when he came up. I bailed in after him and lifted him out. He liked that. Years later and now with a bad back I have to sleep on the floor. He comes in and attacks me every single night and we play for a little bit and then we both go back to sleep. He's a good boy.
My doxie LOVES the “full body hug”, wagging tail and everything. He has slept in my bed from day 1, rode in my lap for 8 years of OTR trucking. We’re off the road now and as I type, he’s in my lap. Pretty sure he knows I love him

My dog is so attached to me; we truly have a great bond. Even if I go outside to get something out of the car, and I'm not gone more than a minute, he will wag that tail and whine with happiness when I walk back through that front door...almost as if it seemed I had been gone for 10 years. Mine also sleeps on the bed with me...taking over most of the bed, fully stretched out and I wouldn't have it any other way. I like feeling him close to me...and I think he likes feeling me next to him through the covers.

The heater in my house broke 3 years ago and I've Never fixed it because ole fuzzy buns (75 pound lab pit mix) pretty much sticks to me 247. 14 years and counting this dude has been my best friend since.
Lol..i.bought an old house...i have 4 large dogs...it.was.gonna get so cold i.was afraid they would get too cold with no electric in the house....so i put a mattress on the floor..blankets over the doors...coldest night ever and about 11 oclock it was so hot in The room i had to remove the door blankey...thats when i figured out why humans and dogs bonded.
..to stay warm..their regular body temp is like 103 or (higher if i remember right) ...honest...i was SOOOO HOT with all those guys...

I have 10 rescue dogs. My little 83 year old daddy told me “ If you ever get cold just pull another dog over on you.” I had to laugh 😂.
@@sislertx there's an old rock band called three dog night. The saying comes from way back when people would sleep with dog's in order to stay warm. On extremely cold night's it would take multiple dog's to stay warm. Just one more reason to be grateful for dog's. By far the most loyal animal on earth. I think humans are ranked around 9th or 10th.

When I move into a new place that is bigger and allows pets - may get a dog. Every day I plan on having one on one time with my dog and telling him/her that I love them. When I look at animals I see their hearts and their souls. That's what we connect with and it's certainly how they connect with us.

I love watching these kind of videos...i know i don't own a dog yet, but my aunt owns one, and she is a busy person (means she's only around from 5 pm to 7 in the morning (because of office work) and on weekends. So me and my cousin ends up watching over for the dogs she has. While my cousin does the feeding, i do the rest. Sometimes, when they finish up their food, just to find out that i woke up to eat my meal, they'd follow me around because they know that when i eat, i'd give them the meats (pork and/or fish). And they know it everytime because it has become our routine, that whenever i eat, they too would find themselves beside me eating the same food i have. Also, when i'm sitting, they'd rest and mostly sleep under or beside me. I even let them bite and play with my hands, and they'd like to bite (not hard though, just playing) with my fingers.
I watch my cousins dog sometimes, she either trys to bite my hands or she sits on my lap. Everytime I go to the bathroom she stands outside the door, wining
A female lab came to our house wounded and we adopted her along with our other 6 dogs and named her Ruby..............♥️😍😍❤️

I cant hike with my dog because on walks, she walks for like 10 minutes then wants to be held. But shes just a puppy so she'll probably be stronger as she gets older

Exercise and bringing them into nature is another important way to express love. Dogs love and are so grateful for these.

I’ve had my lab for almost 6 years, since she was 7 weeks.
When I would train her, I’d look her in the eyes. Now when she wants attention or to tell me she wants to go out she will paw at me and or try to look me in the eyes. I feel by me doing that to her she now feels looking into my eyes tells me she wants to communicate back ☺️

My dogs do that too! Their body language and their eyes is how the communicate with us. Knowing your dog well, you already know what they are trying to tell ya too. I love that lol
