I much appreciate this. I’ve lost dogs in the field, in various circumstances, and taken a few more to the vet.
If we love them, we let them run. It is not real love to keep them in cotton-wool, to deny what they are and what they love to do. We can only take what care we can, and pick up the pieces.
Good luck and good hunting to you and your boy.
    Peter…. Australia.

While I think of it, I got a tip from an old whippet man, which was to run my fast dogs in rough country from an early age. His theory was that they’d learn that they had to run smart and dodge obstacles before they got fast enough to kill themselves. I can’t say for certain that it works, because I’ve still had those losses and vet trips, but it does make sense.

Your 100% right there mate, I'd lost my whippet to a broken neck a couple months before this happened so wasn't the greatest year for me and the dogs, but it happens and it happens alot with these dogs.....fast dogs and obstacles aren't a good mix🙈 Thwnk I appreciate your comment and good luck to you also 👌👍

My Bedlington Whippet did the same thing at the age of 1. I was told he would never work again, now 15 years old. He lamped until he was 8 and worked well day time until 12. Now a couch dog.
The good workers do seem to pick up many more injuries than the average workers.
I'm sure your dog will run again and even if not at top speed will pick the bunnies up just fine. He my well favour turning one direction more than the other, that's what i found with mine anyway.

I have had Lurchers for roughly 20yrs now and never worked them (Dogs have the heart, I just haven't a clue, if anybody could point me in the right direction on starting it would be very much appreciated) and I am constantly patching and cleaning up wounds after they speed through the fields, bushes, brambles... well everything.
I have found even non working Lurchers do everything fast and rough but with a beautiful elegance.

You can't wrap um up in cotton wool my friend, had some bad ones myself over the years.
One place a friend of mines permission been loads of times but in known to us he the farmer had left a tree stump in the field , roots attached an it was layed on its side , well my btch was running and we heard a Yelp she carried on made the catch, but after checking her when she retrieved, one the the roots had speared her in between her ribs .
How she carried on an made the catch I don't know, but one thing she did have was heart an massive prey drive.
But if the dogs could speak I'm sure they'd rather work than be a foot warmer. 👍

  • @mitchellwhite8276
    @mitchellwhite8276 Před rokem

My bitch split her carpel joint last year and snapped tendons that would hold her leg straight if you try to push the foot down when lifting her leg out infront of her.
I took her to greyhound man and was told to stitch it up as nothing could be done to connect them, he said that greyhounds have tendons cut to stop them exploding during races.
I was told to take it easy on her but make sure we was doing plenty of walking as the other muscles will learn to compensate for the snapped tendons and muscles that will no longer be doing much.
She healed and was rehabed and in no time was back out on the lamp the end of the same season.
She started off slow and she knew to take it easy, was turning like a bus.
This year after a long rest and getting her back in shape she's a different dog she's the best she's ever been.
Think you'll be surprised how quickly it will get better.
At the end of the day its snapped and isn't going to heal I'd focus on making her stronger get her body use to the change obviously once healed up.
Good luck with it mate 👍

Hiya bud injuries are part and parcel of running dogs and some of them really don't make a sound when they cut themselves iv got whippets now and one of my girls cut her keel area with barbed wire and a good cut to she made no sound at all people do think that whippets are frail and dainty on times but they ain't their tuff little buggers on times my old Tessa she was a old school gypsy whippet collie greyhound x whippet collie greyhound afew times but to look at her you'd of said she was a working whippet she was a lovely dog she injured a hamstring one autumn and that took the best part of a year to heal and settle to where it didn't bother her yano and she was similar age to your Bryn I found that I got used to how much work she could do and she would pull up a little from what she used to be like and a working balance developed from reading the body language yano, anyway keep up the great work pal and happy hunting

A 4yr old Deerhound/Grey/Collie/Bedlington (and I think was told a bit of staffy thrown in but not sure) who is very game and has killed rats and mice in the yard often. HATES Foxes with a passion and goes into berserker mode if sees one (found out his parents were used for foxing if thats useful to know, it is NOT what I want him to chase)
Other is an 18month Saluki/Grey/Staffy who seems game but other than 1 heart attack moment where he pinned a badger, I don't know (thing came out a bush we was walking past, dog was on it within seconds, luckily so was I so badger could escape before it got worse).
