  • The Yorkshire Dales are a paradise for rabbits. In order to save the grass for the sheep, that means a lot of fun ferreting and working longdogs. Countryside Alliance director shooting David Taylor goes out with some of the top dog people in the UK to learn about working whippets. This item first appeared in Fieldsports Britain, episode 115. Whippets are as good a poaching dog as any lurcher for rabbit especially, great ratting dogs too, if you have ever seen two whippets fighting each other it is obvious they have plenty of terrier DNA in there breeding, despite there slender demeanor they are very hardy dogs.

I agree, a Whippet might be skinny but they are tough cookies IMHO, yes they will shiver in snow & ice but start running them and they soon warm up. Another matter if they get wet but while they are dry they are OK. Coats if its raining but not icy.

Cracking looking whippets... however think he needs correcting regarding Brian Plumber... Plumber wanted a lurcher as a multi purpose hunter not just for rabbits. The whippet is an excellent rabbit catcher & perhaps rat & squirre nothing else ... Back in the hay day of hunting the right lurcher with the right training would be suitable for a lot of game not just rabbit like the whippet is .. that is the point.... 🐕 👍

i have a smooth coated whippet x greyhound/collie bitch, family pet that sleeps on my bed and all that, but she stands up to cold winter days outside no problem. I work on a farm and she was out all winter with me, -10C and snowing, she hardly shivered. they are athletes and run about to keep warm. if you tried running sprints and having your adrenaline up after hiking up a hill with heavy trousers and a coat on you'd get hot!

The killing methode at 2:30 seems gruesome, why they don´t hit them behind the neck?

I like whippets but whippets can do anything a lurcher can lol.Whippets are good rabbiting dogs but they cant course hairs, not enough stamina for lamping all night, not too bright and they cant do the bigger stuff. Not exactly the all rounders the guy makes out.

who ever it was trying to dispatch them poor rabbits needs to go back to school & learn how to do it proper! Not good for PR filming that amateur, if you cant do the job properly let someone else do it.

For the love of god, please learn how to kill rabbits - it should only take a few seconds - my dad had me doing it effectively at age 12, it looked like he was massaging it's neck & what was that bollocks about putting hares back on the coursing list? I've hardly seen any hares for the last 10-15 years, why would you want to reduce their numbers further?
