When I ran AD&D campaigns, I generally made killing, even attacking flail snails ruled an "act of evil". I had a group of orcs show up to see the adventurers were the ones who killed the fail snail. The lead orc screamed "Killed a flail snail and you consider OUR kind evil? You will die screaming!" Keep in mind that those orcs were evil and they were disgusted at the adventurers' evil.

Then, through the trees, we saw a few trees seem to move in between the trunks. As it turned out, it was an ent with a couple boulders under its arms that was investigating the noise. These boulders also turned out to be a pair of flail snails which the ent was carrying around, looking for the devils, actually. Upon finding the situation, he chucked the snails into the fight, whereupon they basically beat the tar out of the two devils and instantly turned the fight around in our favor~

"How To Make Your Players Feel Like Shit"
    -
Have your PC's go on a Side Quest, sent by an NPC saying to defeat the Flail Snail because they need it to do their lively hood/need it for a spell/healing component to save someone. Make sure this person is bullshitting and only wants the shell for the money.
    -
Once they find it, make a point of saying it's passive and just casually wiggling around, looking almost happy as it eats rocks.
Then, as they cut off the tentacles, make sure that it tries to 'run' away, but it's too slow. Now, as there are no more tentacles it cries and whines and screeches because it's *in so much pain and it's so, so miserable*. As it goes inside it's shell, crying and whining, have it so that the 'Heroes' have slowly hear it die.
    -
Boom, you have Guilty PC's who suddenly feel like shit, and they have a motive to deep root a Terrible market that actually only thirsts for gold and pretends to use shells for Healing properties.
