Fun fact about Yuan-ti and Chult - Yaun'ti are so wicked, dangerous and just dominating outside of the human civilizations, that they've "purged" their parts of Underdark (especially under Black Jungles) from anything that is not their slave. So, generally, drows, duergars, ilithids etc are scared shitless of them.
Another fun fact - Yuan's racial spell-like abilities are psionic in nature, not stricte magical.
I recommend looking into The Serpent Kingdoms as well, even just for spells created by Yuan'ti and created just for dealing with them. Seriously, Yuan'ti are perfect antagonistic forces for characters from level 1 to 20 and, in a way, are very fresh and underused by popular media
I wanted to add the psionic part but i didnt have the space to put it :(
@@MrRhexx I dont know did you see my comment sugestion but just in case. I'm still waiting for episode about oni in future. Like, do they originate from Vaprak like ogres do?
@@MrRhexx I promise we won't feel bad if you do a part 4 👀
@@MrRhexx We won't feel bad if you do a part four, but don't do it if you don't want to, haha.
Are they psionic? That is not what I see in the monster manual or other supplements. Then again, there is a lot of inconsistencies like not giving certain Githyanki elites their silver swords.
My Tomb of Annihilation party is just about to enter the Fane of the Night Serpent for our upcoming session next week, so this recent string of videos about the Yuan-Ti have come in CLUTCH. You've really helped me flesh out my campaign, and I really appreciate it.
I am glad you like them! So bad we don't really have lore about Dendar's yuan ti :( Hopefully we can get some in 5th edition.
@@MrRhexx We've got an entry about Yuan'yi Nightmare Speakers in Volo's guide to monsters. I'm not sure if there is anything else in previous editions but i could've sworn there was something, if not in Serpent Kingdoms then in some 2e stuff
I read up on a ton of the lore and my party actually RPed past it, was both proud and disappointed
Someday I’m gonna play a yuanti cleric and use the use video as an excuse for sacrificing the rest of the party to the serpent gods lol 😂
Hope you had a fun session
I personally loved how the 'Time of Troubles' was the "In Story" way to explain the changes in rules between 2nd Edition and 3rd Edition 😁
The same thing happened with the spellplague 3e-4e and the second sundering 4e-5e
that happened a lot after the Time of Troubles, a lot of powerful deities (mostly the evil ones) went after independent and sleeping gods when AO changed the rules on them. Shar took out a lot deities without anyone knowing they are actually worshipping her now and Tiamat went after everyone with the scalykind portfolio (Tchazzar for instance)and I fear she finally took out Finder in 4E
I'm one of those people, that love DnD, but have never in their entire lives played even one session. Mainly because none of my friends want to... Anyway, thanks to your videos I get my DnD fix and I love it! Can't wait for the next one!
Me too.. I know like about everything of the lore and I love it, but I no friends to play with. :( oh well, back to the books!
It was like that for me for the longest time too. I've been playing in my first ever campaign for a year and a half now, and just yesterday we finished the first major arc of the story. It's alot of fun but also alot of time dedicated to it. I'm in europe and the rest of the group is in the US, so I have to be available at 2am every other friday, for 4-5 hours
@@TheAratine So you are playing online? :) How did you find the group you are playing with, is there like a website or something where ppl who are looking for others to play with can connect?
same
Then you don't love D&D.
Hot take: Sseth is an avatar of Asmodeus's true form; Ahriman, a titanic snake that was one of the two champions of Law before falling into Baator.
Everything that Sseth and his priests advocate sounds just like the way Asmodeus/Ahriman operate; subtlety, stealth, secrets, and domination.
"Sseth" isn't actually trapped; Asmodeus tricked Set into taking over the worship of Sseth. This frees up Asmodeus from having to perform the duties of a god, but more importantly, sets up the real pay-off...
Asmodeus/Ahriman's real body is still terribly wounded from his original fight with his former other Jaziran, and the fall into Hell. To heal, Ahriman needs to devour the souls of the Faithless, those who've rejected the gods completely.
When the worship of Sseth has grown big enough, Asmodeus will trigger the big reveal that Sseth's worshippers were deceived by Set, and their "actual" god isn't real. This would cause a catastrophic upheaval in yuan-ti society, and probably a massive civil war. Ahriman will feast on a glut of serpentine souls who've rejected their god, and all gods, and the Deceiver will heal...
You can do it. Cuz anything is allowed. But Asmodeus is not an old god. His story has been plainly told in the novels many times. They keep it vague for the sourcebooks. He's a fallen angel of the first gods before there was good or evil.
I wish that we saw the Sarruk in 5e. Them as well as the other creator races. In D&D, it is so easy to overlook their influence in the deep past, instead looking to the Dragons and Giants who sort of overshadow much of the early history of Toril. I'd love to see future videos on the Aerie, Sarruk, and the Batrachi.
There's a channel called Dungeon Dad. He takes older edition monsters that weren't covered in 5e and converts them, also giving their basic history and advice on using them in a 5e campaign. He also covers monsters that are radically different in their 5e presentation vs. all of their previous entries. We could send requests that he cover the Sarruk in a future video.
King Orem is one of my favorite pulling the strings from the shadows characters
Tbf the creator races are so old that most of their influence on the world has basically come and gone. They are all extinct now so there isn't really a reason for then to be talked about in 5e. As for not really appearing pretty much everything to do with Netheril is tied to Sarruk. Because if the nether scrolls.
I, for one, would be 100% onboard with a mini-series like you’ve done for the Yuan-Ti, for each of the 5 Creator Races 😁 sounds fun.
As I mentioned in the last video I have a pureblood player in my game so I'm hoping he doesn't watch this. But all we really did fornhis backstop was he's from najara and he was supposed to be a willing sacrifice to Sseth until he heard the low priest utter Set's name. I've been trying to approach it like it's a rogue cult not the entire belief to hopefully surprise him with the reveal later on if he hasn't already read up on it himself.
I love how often you are releasing videos this month. Keep it up
I *really* enjoyed this series! Knowing Seth is in distress gives me both an idea to incorporate into a campaign and a character goal!
Obligatory supporting comment
absolute chad right here
People give the FR a hard time for being the default, kitchen sink setting. I don't entirely disagree, but it still has its own identity that it has within its own mythology. Things like the Times of Trouble and the things between Set and Sseth I find really cool
I personally think it's the best choice I just wish we'd get more setting specific source books.
@@boinkmcbingo8890 yes, please elaborate on what is happening somewhere other than the Sword Coast North...
Something has to be the default, and FR got more love in the novels (which is a gateway into the game) than Greyhawk, DL, Eberon etc
I always love hearing about the Goss fights even if they're short you make them sound so cool.
"Asking for a video on half-dragons?"
The last 5 minutes of just wondering around the map and explaining what’s around here or cool idea. its my favourite thing about DnD and the lore I could literally listen to an 4 hour version of it just going around the map and giving a quick brief overview of what’s there! We can always dream!
This was easyly one your best episodes. Thanks ones again from your hard work
I'm running RoT and my party just saved Varrem the White from the Yuan-ti in the Tomb of Diedrus which is in the Serpent Hills which would be house Hss'tafi Yuan-ti, the Yuan-ti in this Tomb had been using Diedrus' divination pool which supposedly can get past most blocks on divination, so these Yuan-ti were probably using it to try and divine on either Mershulk or Sseth.
"What they don't tell you about the World Serpent"
That video is just gonna confuse a *bunch* of people.
In the main continent of my home brew world I have a Historian that works in the Magic College named Rhexx. The party is damn near as reliant on him as I am to your actual videos!
I absolutely love learning from you because you explain topics so well. I could listen to you literally all day. Please keep it up!
If possible I have some questions I would love to ask you do you know how I could do that
Thank you for this video, MrRhexx! The Yuan-Ti have come a long way since their introduction in the original, old-school sandbox module "Dwellers of the Forbidden City" in the early 1980s, in Gary Gygax's time. In there, they were just a grisly, horror-inducing "lost world" type serpent race inspired by tales from writers like Robert E. Howard and the like. Players back then might not have known all these origin stories about them but still knew that they were SCARY. 🙂
These lore videos are incredible and fascinating to watch. Thank you for all the hard work you put into making this information readily available to us! I can watch for hours sometimes
Thanks once more my friend. Absolutely LOVED your in-depth review on the Yuan-Ti and though most of it I was familiar with, there were certainly aspects I found new and noteworthy as well. Great job. Should you elect to do another one on a civ type race, I'd love to see a deep dive on both the Duergar and their mad as hatters relatives, the Derro. Both offer delicious adventure traits in not just the Underdark but also mountain/hillside ranges infested with caves and caverns.
I also have keen interest in your development of an armour class & damage reduction guide. Which makes wonderful sense. Seeing some of your proposals, such as the use of monster carapace shell to fabricate armour brings back memories of the Baldur's Gate game, with its use of Ankheg shell crafted armour and Icewind Dale, with the use of Umber Hulk shell crafted armour.
Of course there's also Bulette shell, Chuul shell, Xorn, etc that come to mind. I look forward to seeing your results! Cheers. :)
I would absolutely LOVE a series about the early history of the Forgotten Realms.
The dragon armor looks quite similar to the one is Skyrim. I love that
thanks for sharing another great video! i like how your organised all of the diverse inter-related information and noted the useful references
Do it.
A series about the creator races.
I love fantasy history like that!
The wiki page on the Sarrukh is hilarious. They live up to 1000 years or more and it looks like their empire was founded and declined in just over 1500 years (-35,000 to -33,500 DR).
For reference the Roman empire lasted 1000 years and was populated by humans who usually live to be 60 if they survive infancy. This makes the Sarrukh look like a nation of mad scientist gene tinkers who speed ran the creation and implosion of their own society instead of a wise and powerful ancient race.
Yeah it all happened kinda fast, had to do a double take on that one. I like to believe that there was a lot that happened before they became an empire, where they got to live for a few thousand years as the supreme rulers without fully conquering everything.
These videos are so cool and are satisfying my need for lore. I’m getting ideas for a whole campaign where the yuan-ti have some big plot that the players have to find out and thwart
Hey can you cover how exactly the races work in dnd? What foes the race mean, how exactly people who originate from different origins called that or this race, and how exactly the race changing conditions like undead and lycathrophy work to have different races affected by these conditions treated as the same race of undead or lycanthrope, for example having dwarf, elf and a human have these and somehow be clasified as being the same dispite most of the time keeping their race speciffic abbilities when they change races?
very interesting topic, that is somenthing i wish to know
@Ethertask Sebastian ??????
@Ethertask Sebastian oh well yes
@Ethertask Sebastian yes and the new ch just released, woooooo!
21:40 You can also tell that the artist really likes the Yu-Gi-Oh trading card game.
The next character I’m playing is actually a pure blood so I’m so glad you made these videos I can’t express it I’ve been having a hard time with the lore and this sires is helping a lot
The amount of work that you put into this is beyond praise. You are a blessing to us passionate about the D&D Lore.
"What really matters to you"
Your words are what matters to me! You could make an entire video about the process of building a house in DnD and id watch it.
I was looking for "inspiration" for a campaign heavily using the yuan-ti, I'm using these three vids as my campaign focus, thanks so much.
That thumbnail 😳
Ikr, I can tolerate them being evil...
@@juanl7911 That's how Yuan-Ti manipulates you.
@@guctusu Don't care, snitties are worth it
Morality goes out the window once snitties are on the table
Damn my bard gonna be a snake charmer now.
Set ....definitely my favorite of the gods
The real one or Egyptian interloper?
+1 for the DR mechanic. I've been playing with my own homebrew for that for ages and its great to see someone else feel the same about base 5e's armors!
great work as ever, really like all of your videos and appreciate the depth of your research for them.
there was a "freemium" mmo in the ebberon setting, and it was pretty good even if you didn't spend a penny. as long as you don't mind only getting to level twelve or so ever.
Lol, correction, whoever made warcraft was a really big fan of forgotten realms. The lore footnote about the portals and orcs is older by at least a decade than blizzard's first published games.
Bro, i know its a bit cringy to request but I'd genuinely enjoy seeing a "what they don't tell you about Mr.Rhexx"
If he ever makes a QNA, it should be titled that.
I'd argue that Wild beyond the Witchlight doesn't take place in the FR since it takes place 90% of the way in the Feywild and even the nonfeywild parts aren't explicitly in the Forgotten Realms.
I've absolutely loved your set of videos about them, they're one of my favorite races
I don't know if I missed it or if you knew but the civil war in Okoth ended up having the Sarrukh that turned away from their peers and traveled the planes being transformed in Couatl. When Jazirian was slain by Merrshaulk, they came back and went to Maztica and embraced by the Qoutal God there or flew to cult and embraced Ubtao. Later guiding many of the tribes like the tabaxi from their original continet.
Would you be able to do a big timeline video explaining, in brief, the events from the start of the world of Toril up to the “modern day,” please!
Item creation and personalizing their weaponry has been a major focus of my campaign recently.
a rogue can modify a pair of daggers to be bolos, for example
Amusingly, the World Serpent is currently operating as an interdimensional Inn in the D&D universe...even able to provide entry/exit to places such as the domains of Ravenloft and Dark Sun...you just need to find a door into the Inn. It's also more of a neutral location there...
There are also at least 2 houses and Kara-Tur and a few of them in Maztica according to older editions
DMing ToA and near Fane of Night Serpent in the nexts weeks so THANK YOU for the content
As always, great work MrRhexx! I love (and GREATLY appreciate) the work you do with lore.
Awesome stuff and just what I needed! Thank you!
I am running Storm King's Thunder, and I wanted to introduce Iymrith earlier, with yuan-ti followers (who are in her lair but not really explained in the module). The adventurers will probably run into her in Luskan (treating with one of the Ships that is part of the Kraken Society). I'm going to go with your video on her in that she is seeking some sort of spiritual ascension, and she needs the Wyrmskull throne's power for this (hence why she is doing what she is doing other than her hatred of giants).
I plan on her also polymorphing (hand waving the "polymorph doesn't work that way"), for the sake of introducing her more easily, into an elderly air genasi named Lady Dhuma Ayeem of the Enclave of Ascore (a play on Doom of the desert and the name Iymrith, which I pronounce as "eye-Yeem-rith"). She would have high level sorcerer abilities (one of the players is a water genasi storm sorcerer). Her yuan-ti bodyguards follow her as a cult, believing in and supporting her goal of Ascension.
She will give the made up cover story that her air genasi Enclave who lived in Ascore researching Old Netheril were destroyed "by a cabal of giants", and that as a lady in exile, she is trying to make alliances to take her kingdom back and get revenge. One of those then would be members of House Hss'tafi who decided to follow her Cult.
Perhaps the yuan-ti think her ascension will help the troubles of Sseth. Or perhaps they plan to betray her and literally sacrifice her to Sseth instead. I'll leave it open in case the players try to ally with them to defeat her.
Anyway, thought I would share and thank you again for the lore!
I was waiting for a PDF based on your armor video. Really looking forward to checking it out. I really liked your ideas on weapons as well and wouldn't mind a PDF for changes to that as well.
I will be releasing a video hopefully next week or the week after that, explaining the PDF and how it all functions :)
Awesome, l'll be looking forward to that too!
honestly, the best thing about D&D magical iten is that you have little room for optimization. Older editions felt like Cyberpunk 2077, the characters walked around wearing half a million in gold pieces. If you gave them a butplug slot they would take it! 5e you can only have 3 and the cut atribute inflation in the bud with the 20 hard cap. This accelerate dice rolling.
Glad you mentioned how Zehir/Set relates to the Yuan-Ti.
Please could you do a deep dive on obsidian dragon!
Ajpicket has a nice video about them
I thought you were going to talk about Dendar this time, she's my favorite option for Great Old One patron
I'm actually confused, is Dendar actually Seth? Because Dendar is supposed to be imprisioned in Chult as well. So is the Night Serpent Seth or is she another god altogether that is also Nidhogg. D&D pathenons are so confusing.
@@TimeGem there is A LOT of confusion, and even I am confused about a lot of things. Its just that all the lore is scattered among so many books. I don't think Dendar was ever part of the World Serpent, but many scaly-kind may venerate her as such...including perhaps some Yuan-Ti. Dendar is not a god, but a primordial....which means her power is inherently different than that of gods; and may have existed far before gods..? Though that is also sorta debatable. Sseth basically subsumed every snake god other than Dendar, before Set subsumed Sseth.
@@MrRhexx I bought your new pdf but I can't download from the link you sent.
@@MrRhexx yeah lore in fantasy books can be convoluted at best some times. I mostly come from a comic book lore background and even the gods of those books are confusing. So I hear you on how a lot of the lore is scattered because I pretty much deal with the same thing. Lol! Thanks dude!
This has been a great 3 Parter. Thank you! Favorite fantasy.
21:10
I think it might be the other way around.
Pretty sure Blizzard was inspired by D&D and not the other way around.
Okay, there are too many comments about thumbnail snek bitties. I think I may have overdone it this time.
I was just focused on the size of those fangs! LOOKS SO PAINFUL
the snitties are just too powerful
Loved this Yuan-Ti series, keep up the fantastic content sir.
"Hey hey people, Sseth here." Sorry I couldn't resist making the joke.
@2:00 I agree armor needs to be worked on. Right now there is nothing involving materials and real impacts.
There is adamantine but that's it. I think there need to be more matierals and materials like adamantine not turning armor into magical (RAW it is magical as artificer can't infuse it on DnD Beyond)
I think this should carry over to weapons too. Somehow add differences to weapons.
I agree as well. I am probably going to augment my 5e setting with two of the PDFs on the storepage
Fascinating stuff as always! We’re starting Tomb of Annihilation next month, and one of my players is a Pterafolk! 😊
I dont know if you covered it before, but a video on the other continents would be awesome! Especially Maztica.
Thank you for sharing!
Remember Port Nyanzaro in Chult is an Amn colony, so you can ‘import’ a Yuan Ti or plot into Amn, Candlekeep Library or even the southern part of the Sword Coast, due to this connection.
@Mrrhexx if you made a podcast I would listen to the heck out it. Your content is amazing.
I need more yuan ti videos in the future, PLEASE
In my personal lore, the Yuan-ti gods are actually Astral Dreadnoughts, who also factor into the lore of the Beholders to believe they will ascend to that form.
I play a Yuan-ti Pureblood male Enchanter and member of the “Coiled Cabal” in Adventure League in Forgotten Realms🐍🐍💯
Man been excited for your armor book for a while. Instant purchase!😁
More! More! More snake lore! Let’s go fourth video lol
I think damage reduction should be the go to tank stat, barbarians basically have a very strong version of this already. And ac should be for high Dex "ninja" type "you can't touch this".
I've been theory brewing about how to differentiate between dex defense, and strength defence and you give the best I've found.
It needs a pretty deep teepee rewrite of damage mechanics. And I don't know any experienced players who play often enough to play test it with me. But I've enjoyed playing it with me.
ill def use this race in my campain they are so interesting and would love to RP as a snake boss
4:55
that's not a mutated batrachi that kinda look like a slaad, that's literally a slaad lord Bazim-Gorag
Bazim-Gorag was a batrachi in life, before he ascended and became a slaad lord.
Thank you for the video!
Now, I want to know about the Bathrachi! Damn, the more info appears the more it seems missing.
Love the work your doing, been following you for a long time now. Keep it up.
So your armor idea is basically a cross between Arcanum and first edition way to go
Long time watcher, first time commenter. I just want to say mate, Your passion for this game is contagious!
Lmao thanks for these everytime I watch your videos I get campaign ideas, but this one might be the best yet, the party is forced to work with a long forgotten hidden house of the Yuan-Ti and as they're working together the party will find out that the reason this house was outcasted is because the priest of the house discovered the truth about Seth and Set, and switched gears to help and awaken Seth tho of course to the other house appears to be blasphemous, so the party ends unknowingly help heal Seth
Mitigation is a good term for damage reduction. You can have Armor class and mitigation boost each other with some kind of simple math can incorporate a soft cap
I absolutely loved this series. The only thing i have to say other than positive things is the titles could of been a bit easier to follow in order. But great work man youre a legend
If anyone is interested in the full story. Pick up pretty much any novel with Elminster in it. The whole of them plus a few stand alone fat Greenwood novels have all the lore the sourcebooks are vague on, purposefully so as it's pretty clear and linear in the novels and Greenwood constantly overwriting(which I adore him for).(on edit though Mr rhexx really consolidated it well. What he said is basically exactly what happened)
Fingers crossed for an Arborea Video someday!
28:35 now i'm picturing snakemen in Superman costumes
If you make another video about Yuan-ti secret spells etc I WILL WATCH IT ❤ just letting you know 😉
The Orc Gate thing predated WoW by a really good bit of time.
Actually not
BRO! Can you imagine having a character plays a Yuan-ti Wizard that becomes a famous hero, all to become the greatest diviner to solve the mystery of what does Sseth want us to do, for the greatness of the empire !
I hope you'll give consideration on "What they don't tell you about the Gith" or even a subvideo on the Githzerai, Githyanki and the Githvryk
still waiting patiently for the rest of the heavenly planes.. why none of the D&D lore youtubers ever finish covering every plane and only do things halfway? :( so sad!
Not a contact creator, but as a DM, anything outside of the material plane is a TON of work to research to keep it roughly lore-accurate. That, and as far as I can tell, most of the published content generally assumes you're operating in the material plane, and thus, there's the most content dedicated to it.
@@reactionarydm As a DM making a Homebrew world, it is hard enough to make the material realm, let alone all the other realms.
So I can sympathize. XD
You can consider this a BIG break from it :D but I will come back to it. There is just so much to it that I get burnt out.
@@MrRhexx glad to hear that you will eventually go back to it. Thank you for letting me know that :D
its just that I enjoyed your other videos on the heavens so much, I watch them almost every week. You're really the best at making these videos, so I was really looking forward to a complete collection of videos on the heavens, especially since you already made so many! I'll keep patiently waiting :D
Thinking about the so many things you touched upon in this video: have you already made a video about the Dragons' civil war? If not, it would be a very interesting one!
Thanks for the lore! ^^
I would love another Yuen-Ti vid somewhere down the line~
It is a bit of a contradiction that scaled creatures are sacred and must not be harmed to them as you mentioned in the previous video yet they are the best type of sacrifice
I know, its stupid to make, because all of them would hound you to death, and you would add some Angry Yuan-Ti's chasing you around if you go this route, every 3rd turn but could you for the intrest of research and argument, make a Yuan-Ti skin armor, to gain ones appearance and intellect for instance to subdue the White dragon, Arveiturace? It would make a badass gauntlet campaign to see, how long you survive, and what good you can do in your shortlived folly of life... OwO
Wait, so I thought The ancestors of the Yuan-ti was an old human empire who worshipped snake gods and transformed themselves to be more like their gods. They were also know for early metalurgy, just like here. Is that kinda like corrupted mythology of what really happened?
Pretty sure that's pulled from the 5e entry, right? 5e at different points radically contrasts older lore, which I think Mr. Rhexx and others (AJ Pickett) have pointed out and complained about. Generally speaking, it seems like older lore is higher quality, imho, so I personally defer to older lore. That said, whatever is best for your campaign! The whole human cult --> Yuan-Ti formula is a great basis for a story too!
@@reactionarydm I might be thinking of the Volo's Guide entry. Getting my lore mixed up. You are quite right about the older lore quality. I guess that's why we watch Mr. Rhexx 😄 He brings it all together.
This is a Forggoten Realms specific video. So it may be that in most worlds that's what happens, but not in the Forggoten Realms. The lore is there for inspiration at the end of the day, pick up whatever you find more interesting even if it butchers the setting's lore. It is your version of the world, after all.
Please make a video on what they don’t tell us about Cloud Giants please
The whole Set - Sseth thing could be a great setting for a Mulhorand themed campaign.
Awesome video like always. Would you ever consider doing any lore videos on the game Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2? I just started playing the games and it seems like there would be cool lore to learn in them.
I think it would be a cool idea to have an adventure based around saving their trapped God
