    @animorph17 Před 3 lety +141

    The best campaign I've ever seen with wererats had a colony making use of the fact that natural born wererats are stronger and have better control than infected lycanthropes. For pathfinder mechanics this was DR 10 instead of DR 5, faster shapeshifting, and allowed to have any alignment instead of forced into being evil. They even get to avoid rampages on a full moon if they're natural born. How does this matter? Wererat brothels, setting themselves up in a whorehouse and using the place as a baby factory for natural born lycans. Got to live in lush opulence, got to grow in power, got to merge seamlessly into human society, and generally stopped being evil because being lewd was just left them all so much better off.
    RIIiiiiight up until they accidentally infect someone, in which case they've got an evil wererat they need to hunt down.
    Cue a war between the sewerrats and the bedrats that us players ended up involved in.

    • @jonathanwells223
      @jonathanwells223 Před 3 lety +13

      You can be evil and not need to murder every time you are given an opportunity. Wererats cannot do what is described in your comment because one, they reek and two, they have an insatiable craving for human flesh.

    • @animorph17
      @animorph17 Před 3 lety +32

      @@jonathanwells223 As per pathfinder lore, that flesh craving was inevitable for infected rats (You know, the whole REASON they were forced to be an evil alignment) and wasn't innate to natural born wererats, though still tended to persist as a cultural artifact because inevitably you'll have infected rats raising and instilling their virtues into the natural born ones. The smell likewise is entirely because they tend to live in the sewers. Don't bathe in shit? You stop smelling like shit.
      Worth noting that a Ratling was also something completely different for older DnD settings and had nothing to do with lycanthropy whatsoever.

Granted, not everyone would be up for that; but a large city would probably have a lot of dead, and there would probably be people who wouldn't care what happens to them after they've died(i'm not really too worried about it myself). Even someone who wants something of themself left behind could probably be hollowed out(kinda like what's done with taxidermy)

But I've never played DnD and don't know what I'd need to play so I just joined the discord for the youtuber Taken20 to try to find out 😅. A really against the natural thing for their race I know but I just love this idea of a wererat who comes to want to protect people while hiding what he is and hate his kind that's why I was looking to see if naturally born ones get forced to transform during the full moon

      It's lycanthropy not lycan-thropy. Instead of using a single noun to label these creatures perhaps we should call them "people who are people, sometimes rat people and occasionally rats but also sometimes rat like entities that are sometimes human."
      I still don't know why fantasy worlds use real life words with clear dictionary meanings to explain things in their world when they could just simply explain things with a sentence or two.     A question related to the Dark Arts in D&D;
    If you have a limb removed and don't have it reattached or regenerated, but keep it nonetheless, do you have a part of your corpse? Or does it only become a part of your corpse once you die?

    • @frankieramos1748
      @frankieramos1748 Před 3 lety

      I’d say semantically a corpse would have to be an entire dead person (obviously still counting of an arm or leg is missing) but an arm that got chopped off whether regrown or not I would say doesn’t count as a corpse and is just a chunk of dead flesh

For campaign purposes he was nerfed (his clan cursed and stuck in hybrid form, and did not have immunities or resistances ) and in the homebrew world he comes from a clan of natural born werebears that were guardians of the great forest.
    Druid werebear with barbarian mentality is alot of fun.
    His side quest of lifting the curse got completed 10 levels early though by one of the other players getting 3 wishes from the deck of many things.

I'd imagine they'd have a +2 to Dex as opposed to the 'take 15 if it's lower', probably a +1 to Con considering their preferred environment, possibly resistance to poison as well. I could imagine them being able to learn Fein Death and cast it on themselves with no somatic, verbal, or material components once per short rest, and maybe at 5th level they could maybe learn Conjure Animals and can cast it at will as long as the creatures they summon are rats(not giant rats, not rat swarms, just regular rats), and then finally they'd have Darkvision, Sunlight Sensitivity, and maybe a 10 ft. blindsight. And I'd imagine their size would be variable from small to medium

    I know Forgotten Realms is your thing, but I think you would really like to take a look at some of the monster lore from Ravenloft. There are some interesting tweaks in the wererat society, among other things, and some incredible wererat characters.

      Isn't Ravenloft a demiplane in Forgotten Realms?

    • @monteparnas
      @monteparnas Před 3 lety +1

      @@draxthemsklonst Ravenloft is, or was, a demiplane, but not tied to any particular world. It was its own setting until 3rd edition, then its concepts were adapted into the Shadowfel from 4th edition onward. It was officially located in the Deep Ethereal in 3rd edition, a blurred transitory space between the Ethereal Border of all worlds.
      In Ravenloft natural wererats do not have a bane common to their entire family, instead each one have a unique allergy at first unknown even to it. But more important than that, although they're still thieves and parasites, they are less bound to the sewers and more involved in the affairs of the city, although always in secret, passing as humans.
      There are entire wererat families with ties all around the world. While minor families or less talented individuals can live as the sewer beasts of common description, the more powerful ones become nobles or rich merchants, using the wealth of information they gather as and from rats for advantage against their political enemies.
      Among them the most powerful family is the Renier, and the matriarch Jacqueline Renier is both the tyrant and local hero of one of the most advanced nations in the setting, Richemulot, a place where, among other things, she encourages the legends about wererats as filthy beasts to ease things for her brethren and the population is mildly obsessed with cleanliness.
