An idea for a monster, since this is a Gothic Horror, something undead and something like from a mythology that is by my count under represented.
Usually Slavic mythology is really under represented so a Drekavac would be interesting, sort of this undead mutated child who dead before being baptised.
Or a Moroi that is a mutated vampire ghost from Romanian mythology.

So what you're telling me is that in order to defeat Demogorgon, you would need to slash through millions of demons, turn his generals against each other or just kill them, kill his kids, make his girlfriend betray him, gain the assistance of Dagon, Oblox-Ob, or Orcus - all of which would immediately turn on you as soon as he was killed - and then slash through millions more vying for the crown? Sounds like one hell of a campaign!

Not too long ago I finished a (multy-years Long) adventure where one of the chapters was defeating Demogorgon. It started with a bard I originally was hopping to play as "Robbin Hood", called "Noble Daggers". In hiis origin adventure he ended possesed and corrupted by every demon we encounter, but he was able to roll proper WILL saves, al though we knew SOME effects would take place. So he turned evil, but with each encounter he learned more and more about demons, their LAWS, pacts and deals. Skip many adventures later and he became the "King-Ping" of Demons and deals with mortals, accentually building a small Demon City, (located over the capital city of Drows so they also had a place on the surface to call a "home") This city was pure Lawful-Evil, a place where mortals could trade with Demons and some of the worst scum in the world, and my character as Leader would trade a constant supply of Souls to diferent Demons. He him self trade his own Soul with multiple Demons and even a few mid rank Demon-Lords in such overcomplicated and twisted deals that our own world most evil Lawyers would feel proud+respect, and thats almost the feeling those demons had. Eventually do to a perfectly planed "betrayal" by character "Nobble Daggers" dies and NO demon can claim what was rightfully theirs, since this death nullified the contracts, causing a massive Civil War between demons. Skip a few adventures and a self proclaimed "NEW Prince od Demons" shows up. "Sreggad Elbon" (at this point out characters are way passed lv 20) Orquestrates the death of Demogorgon. Allies with the other big baddies and even with angels and "Old Gods" promising the death of Demogorgon. Obviously not a single band will hold their word or miss the chance to destroying every other side. Long story short, I actually DID a few of the things to weaken Demogorgon, lower its CR, even confused the 2 heads to attack each other with help of the wispers of Dagon (it wasnt him personally, we had an old artifact that wispered his voice and command)(this time wispering to bouth heads at once, causing the anger and confusion)
Long story short at the moment of its death and with almost all main baddies killing each other for the double cround "Sreggad Elbon" did the unthinkable and used all the power and magic he had as new prince of Demons to physical and metaphorically destroy the crown! "no more Prince of Demons, only his Law, because no Demon, angel or Mortal was able to stop him, by the simple mention of his true Name" as Sreggad Elbon IS Nobble Daggers", and simply banished into some far away dimension (no-one knows where or can find him)
In this short comment is obvious, but this story took place over 3-5 years, with different groups and NO-one ever realized that, NO master or player. So it was by best "Joke". Adventure/destiny took away my character, so I addapted and accepted my fate, and decided I would take something for my own. So I did, it was MY character who killed Demogorgon and took away the chance to claim the tittle/crown
Shame I didnt knew about Obox-ob! I would have added him to the storry....maybe I WILL...maybe Sreggad is currently talking with Obox-ob, having a laugh about his master Prank.

I was always under the impression that Dagon likes his position as the "power behind the throne". A superior candidate to be influenced by Dagon is possible, but Dagon plays a very long game. Tying Demogorgon down with allies, feeding him enemies and constructing more then half his plane to his liking. Dagon has rendered Demogorgon as ineffectual as possible, setting the stage, as well as becoming an arbitrator of the abyss. I don't think Demogorgon's downfall has ever become a goal, but leaving it open to interpretation is a extremely beneficial bit of persuasion. Let them think Dagon is a petty feeble creature holding on to the last bit of power, his last morsels, craving for more. When really Dagon has groomed this entire situation to only benefit himself. It's just as it was the last time the abyss was in upheaval, prepared and ready to be claimed by the strongest beast and Dagon will teach that beast to respond accordingly.

My DM created a role within the multiverse for my character, once he reached the end of this story and I gave him up to be an NPC, called the "Fateweaver". The Fateweaver checks-in on timelines and watches over them with others who hold the mantle, akin to something like the real Nick Fury and Uatu the Watcher. Now, a unique ability of a truly fulfilled Fateweaver is to be able to occupy the mind of a creature or person who witnessed a specific event they wish to observe. I asked him about what kind of dangerous knowledge a Fateweaver should avoid. He mentioned that it was possible, through enough patient study and observation over time, to learn exactly how the Abyss was thrown into the plane of Chaos by Asmodeus. Whether or not someone with that knowledge is powerful enough to execute it is another thing. Though I surmise that one way to challenge Demogorgon would be to build a vast army on another plane entirely and crash it into the Abyss or take the Abyss itself and throw it somewhere else. Somewhere you would have an advantage.

I like the idea of turning Demogorgon's girlfriend against him or away from him to weaken him, or killing his kids, or finding Obox-Ob and somehow convincing that horror to pay Demogorgon a visit. However, there is no way doing any of these, or even all of them, will reduce his CR by "10 points". There's no question Demogorgon should be a CR 30 creature. Since that's the hard max CR in 5e, he doesn't have to be barely CR 30. You could weaken him considerably and he might still be CR 30. Maybe he weakens enough be CR 29 or 28. That's still a very big deal. If word gets out that he's weakened, you could get some upexpected help from Orcus and/or Graz'zt. Even his own minions might turn on him if they smell blood in the water. The denizens of a plane of pure chaos and evil are not likely known for their loyalty.

So the Eladrin aka the fey have succeeded in The Abyss without going insane? I'm not surprised in the slightest. I've mentioned this to my playgroup, but I am terrified of the fey.
A great old one will drive you insane, but the fey will make you wish you were insane. A demon might rip out your soul, but a fey will make you wish you never had one in the first place.

@@Voldrim359 It's not that they're particularly strong, but rather that they go by Blue and Orange morality as opposed to Black and White. What that means is that they don't work on the traditional Lawful/Chaos and Good/Evil alignments. Yes they're classified as such because of our understanding, but in reality their mind works in a way that is impossible for most beings to comprehend.
This was sort of left out in 5e, but D&D is from the ground up built on the alignment system, and an entire race of beings that can mingle with said system, but not be bound it have an unprecedented edge against all other creatures.
A fey turning your blood into vinegar can be seen as a harmless prank. You giving your name to them can be seen as you literally giving your name to them. And with no name you get a ton of debuffs associated with being nameless. Basically you play by their arbitrary rules that they make up on the spot, or suffer.

Thinking about it, demongorgon is the avatar of insanity, every sick mind was a normal one before, to defeat him we have to strike his last glimpse of sanity and human desires, his family and cared ones, something like a betrayal would be enough to shake him, we have to descend him even more in insanity to be able to kill him, but what if we failed? And he survives after all of it? I think he would become way more powerfull after all that mess, he would start an crazy march around de realms and planes like a soldier with ptsd careless punching people in an walmart
