    IMO you should emphasise more that Gods of Fury are evil, but not vile just as Bane, Shar or Cyric. Gods of Fury represent primal forces of nature that encoruages their priests to inspire terror by their raw power. But as much as they can be harmful and deadly, they protect and offer help. Average person in FR venerates them from a need of protection from, in this example, winter and frost.

    I always run the connection between Auril and the Queen of Air and Darkness as a maternal one. The Queen of Air and Darkness birthed/created Auril. When Auril is tied up in certain events, The Queen takes her mantle since she's more enigmatic, powerful, and needs to be "present" less often in order to maintain her power. I also run Auril as having daughters too, being the Frostwind Viragos from 3.5's Monster Manual V, who I reeeealllyyyy hope get a stat block/appear in this adventure. Seriously guys, if you don't know what they are, look them up. Perfect for an Auril/winter game.

      She has 1 Daughter, as of 5e: Nalkara, an Empyrean whom she sired with Thrynn, god of the Frost Giants, who appears only in the module Waterdeep: Dungeons of the Mad Mage.
      I made her have a more central role to the plot of Icewind Dale, per suggestion of another youtuber, to explain a bit of Auril's unrelenting fury.

    Never thought that the Tempest made much self, myself. The gods weirdly distributed in power, with thunder being more powerful than winter and the sea because when we're talking about people venerating and fearing something it would surely be the occasional few hours of mostly harmless light rather than the worst 1/4th of the year or the vast seas. It's not as if many people were freezing to death in their sleep back in the medieval period, or seeing their harvests fail due to the fickle nature of winter. Auril should be the strongest, not a middling god of the Tempest.
    Also Malar being part of the Tempest. Instead of, I don't know, some summer or fire god that enables people to make these four signify the worst of the four seasons and thus each have their own moment to shine. But instead the Forgotten Realms for all their god overload don't have a single evil god of summer or scorching heat. Not even in the deserts.

    1: Auril is one of my favourite deities, probably ever since playing through Icewind Dale II. I often depict her as a less objectively evil deity (for one she's a deity of nature with winter being part of the natural order), and more of a fey and fickle deity, who adopts and protects her followers even if she mercilessly punishes those who don't show her respect. I also see her as the mother and adopter of parentless children (especially girls), which adds to her fey aspect as a sort of reversal of the changeling myth. This was inspired by Icewind Dale II where she was the mother figure for the three orphaned sisters who became her priests in the great ice temple, as well as in Neverwinter Nights 2 where one of the pre-made characters you could choose to play as was an orphaned half-orc ranger with the wild child background who believed she heard her mother's voice in the winter wind and had Auril as her chosen deity. Does Auril truly love these adopted children in spite of her cruelty (like grandfather Nurgle in Warhammer) and thus they return her love with devotion to her cause, or are they forever looking up to their new mother, seeking to gain her approval and fill that gap in their hearts in an insoluble case of unrequited love? Either way it makes for dramatic storytelling.

    • @Valasilphukiir
      @Valasilphukiir Před 4 lety +1

      2: I once ran a long campaign set in ancient Netheril where the two PCs were peasant brothers from low Netheril who were taken under an archwizard's wing after warning him in time to save him from an assassination attempt (they spotted him in a secret meeting when trying to track down a lost sheep that the younger brother accidentally let out of their pen, and saw an assassin sneaking up on him in the shadow of old ruins). After many adventures and the PCs coming around level 20 or so their second campaign involved them going west to what would later be known as the northern Sword Coast to found Netherese colonies there. The villain of this second campaign was to be Safya Aurilsdotter, the first chosen of Auril. Her background was that there was once a small village living south of the World's Edge mountains, and after a hard year a soothsayer warned of a terrible winter to come, and that the only way to avoid it was to offer a sacrifice. Young Safya, just a child, was chosen as the sacrifice because she was born with sorcerous powers she couldn't fully control or understand, and the superstitious villagers didn't trust arcane magic. Taking inspiration from the real-life Incan Capacocha ritual, the villagers fed her drugs to ease her fear and her pain and her resistance, led her to a mountain summit in the Spine of the World mountains, and left her to freeze to death, the drugs preventing her from following them back down the mountain as she passed out on the verge of overdose. But something happened, rather than freezing to death in her sleep, she awoke after a time, shivering in the cold, the drugs having wiped from her memory all but her first name and her knowledge of language and speech. Several digits were lost to frostbite, but as a blizzard set in she found a cave where a snow leopard and her cubs laired, and was taken in by them. From them she learned to hunt and scraped by, barely surviving in the mountain's harshness, but growing stronger from each trial. Eventually she encountered some of the tribesfolk living in the mountains, joining with them and learning of human society, perhaps learning the name and faith of Auril. Upon reaching adulthood she was taken in by a treant druid of Auril with snow white bark and red leaves and sap (think of the Weirwood trees from A Song of Ice and Fire) whose animal companion was a flock of crows and ravens that nested in his branches and hollows, and who he sent out to spy on the world and relay information back to him. He took her in and formally trained her as a druid of Auril. This treant believed that humans had upset the natural order, with their cutting of trees, their overharvesting of animals, and their abuse of fire, and believed that only a long, harsh winter would wipe them out like so many termites and restore things to the way they should be.

    • @Valasilphukiir
      @Valasilphukiir Před 4 lety +1

      3: Safya, now taking the last name Aurilsdotter, had many adventures of her own, uniting the humans, orcs, goblinoids, giants, and other residents of the mountains through conquest, destroying those who refused to worship Auril, and delving into the tombs and crypts of the Spine of the World, ancient, hidden edifices dating as far back as the creator races and robbing them of their dark secrets. Of course, one of her first conquests in Auril's name was to descend to the lowlands, where she wiped out the town that had birthed her and offered her up as sacrifice, never knowing who of the townsfolk were her birth parents, but she most likely killed them, taking those who agreed to follow Auril up to the mountains.
      For all these feats, or perhaps for the feat I'm about to relay, Auril herself put a portion of her divine essence within Safya's soul making her the Frostmaiden's first Chosen, and in many ways perhaps her last. As her greatest feat, using both sorcerous and druidic magic, Safya was able to capture and imprison a divine pheonix, perhaps using the artifact known as Thakorsil's Seat, and the Chosen drained its everburning lifeforce completely, in a magical ritual which would allow her to be reborn, much like the pheonix, the next winter after she was killed, birthed by a worshipper of Auril. Thus just as summer may banish the winter for a time only to see it return, the PCs could kill Safya only to have her reborn in a new body with all of the memories and abilites of the old one, to renew the work of Auril, and come adolescence to get revenge on the PCs.
      This cycle of death and rebirth, much like the avatar from The Last Airbender, would continue until the Netherese archwizard Aumvor the Undying cast Aumvor's Soulshatter on Safya, causing her soul and the shard of Auril's power within it to be broken into several pieces. Though each piece would itself be born anew, none of these children of Auril had any of Safya's memories, and only a hint of her power, none being Chosen.
      It is my headcannon that, guided by Auril herself, the mother of the three priestesses from Icewind Dale II used her magic to gather these shards, giving birth to three daughers who each had a share of Auril's soul, though she was killed before she was able to gather the rest and perform a ritual to bind their souls together and thus give birth to Safya, Auril's Chosen, once again. It is also my headcannon that the Chosen from the 5th edition adventure, Hedrun Arnsfirth, was born with one of these Chosen soul-fragments, hence becoming Auril's Chosen so easily and prior to even worshipping Auril.

      @Valasilphukiir Před 4 lety +1

      4:
      I made a PC named Annaya Aurilsdotter for a campaign where each PC was from a different plane of existence and was banished to a black-hole-like plane where one could easily be sent but none could return from by any known magic. This plane was a desert world, and according to our DM we learned through the course of the campaign it was the first of all planes created by the original creator deity who created the multiverse and all its accompanying overdeities. Here the original deity sundered reality and chose to lose her power in grief after being forced to destroy her firstborn mortal creations, causing the planar distortions that prevented escape, and creating a world where divine spells didn't work and other magic functioned abnormally. Not my first character (that was an Ash Genasi ninja with a bladed chain akin to the Dark Prince from Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones), the PCs later allied with Annaya, a fallen priestess of Auril who unbeknownst to her carried a shard of the Chosen soul within her, and thus some of Auril's divine power even in this realm where divine Magic didn't work - I classed her as a Holy Monk / White Dragon Shaman (3.5 edition), thus she had the ability to turn undead, smite, and channel divine magic into a dragon-like breath of cold, a healing touch, or several divine auras, without actually casting any spells or being the forbidden cleric class. She was sent to that world after, in some fit of madness or mind-control by an unseen force (strongly suspected to be the original creator deity, who wanted her sent to the first of all worlds to fulfill some purpose) she tore out the throat of a fellow Aurilite priestess (unbeknownst to her another carrier of a shard of the Chosen Soul), and at the last second her sentence changed from execution to banishment to the plane of no return.

    • @Valasilphukiir
      @Valasilphukiir Před 4 lety +1

      5: Annaya's was a tragic tale, found abandoned as a baby to freeze to death (or perhaps birthed my the will of Auril with no parents at all, as no footsteps led from the cradle of ice she was found crying in in the frozen wilderness) she was taken in by priests of Auril, looking up to the priestess she would later kill as her big sister and role model. She was traumatized after being tasked with forcing the conversion of a dwarf tomb raider and trespasser in their territory to Auril's worhip, by tying him nude to an X-shaped frame exposed to the elements until he either died of cold or converted (at which point he would be taken in from the cold and welcomed in their family) - being a dwarf he was too stubborn to convert, and also too hardy to die quickly, and so for days the surprisingly gentle and sensitive Annaya begged him to convert and join their family for his own sake, until in the end, driven mad by his ordeal, the dying dwarf agreed to forsake his own gods, but mind numbed as his life left his body he didn't have the clarity of thought to devote himself to Auril - he couldn't form the thoughts or the worlds, and he perished before Annaya could cut him down, leaving the young Annaya to doubt her faith as all the pain and suffering had been for nothing - no one was saved. This trauma was only exceeded when she came-to from apparent mind control, realizing the blood of her sister and role-model stained her teeth and coated her face, the throat of the one closest to her torn out by Annaya's jaws.
      When cast to the desert plane, the first of all worlds, she was sent from an icy paradise into burning perdition. Unaccustomed to the desert heat and unwelcome by the natives she was forced to flee into a waterless region of desert known as the Anvil of the Sun, where she nearly perished, until, her mount dead and herself unconscious and reliving her worst moments in a fever dream, she was saved by another exile, a knight from Greyhawk's world of Oerth. She was taken in by him and taught the teachings of the first creator god, who on this plane went by the name Death, and slowly began to heal from her wounds both physical and emotional. For a time she reconciled her two faiths, stating "There is no God but Death, and Auril is her daughter," but adventuring with the PCs she became the bearer of an artifact that could change one's alignment, and perhaps their very soul. She attempted to use it on an ancient vampire lord, but sensing her misgivings and crises of faith, the vampire turned the tool against her, overpowered her will, and changed her for what would become the rest of her life. Now known as Annaya the Apostate, the twisted woman now believed in nothing, and though her comrades managed to slay the vampire lord by forcing him into his own field of disintegration, Annaya soon found death at the tentacles of a colossal mummified kraken known as a crawling apocalypse, her Auril-given immunity to paralysis (dragon-shaman class ability) failing her as the undead abomination first paralyzed her as the party tried to escape, and then crushed her before they could return and save her (in actuality I had merely forgotten my character was immune to paralysis, only remembering after she died, but it was a fitting end, as her faith in Auril and in herself was gone, so too were the powers granted by that faith).
      But as the god known as Death revealed at the very end of the campaign, the plane of no return did have a method of escape: when one died on that plane their soul would eventually be reborn, either on that world or elsewhere, and perhaps could be guided back to their home plane by Death, and so the shard of Auril's power and of Safya's and later Annaya's soul, may one day be reborn on Toril, and perhaps one day Safya could become whole again, or Annaya's soul find peace.

    Has someone that has never played D&D (but is DYING to) I found it interesting that this Ice goddess could also have been this evil dark Fey goddess. Like maybe be there really IS only one Pantheon of Gods but they have taken multiple identities. I’d imagine this would be useful for a God, I mean in our world, there are many many forgotten gods. Gods Who’s worshipers have died out. If worship is what fuels a gods immortality and power. Being forgotten is akin to dying for them. (If they can not be out right killed) but having multiple identities would be a smart back up. So say one sect of worshipers are utterly whipped out and the name of that form is forgotten, tbey have another “skin” they can step into. Kinda like how the Greek god were transformed into the Roman for the most part

      That is actually the only way to fully kill a god in D&D. You can destroy their manifested body in battle for 3d100 years and then it grows back, but their presence is still there. Where as if you end up destroying any memory of them via a wish spell, they will never come back technically as there would be no one who remembers them and so they would not ever be powerful enough to regenerate and so perish forever

    Auril is my favorite D&D villain and have a Gods of Fury homework assignment side quest in my current Strixhaven campaign. According to RotFM, Auril and Umberlee had a falling out as Auril was turning more of the sea into motionless sheets of ice much to her dismay. I expanded upon this to be Auril’s motive for the Everlasting Rime as her best friend had turned on her with the help of Talos and Malar because Auril’s greed and lust to expand her winter past the North grew to where it blinded her and adds to the isolation aspect as she’s in Grimskalle plotting her revenge

    I have a character who is a conquest paladin with Auril as his patron goddess. He is a Levistus Tiefling born from the frostbitten corpse of his mother who made a deal with the devil to avenge the men that violated her. Giving her amazing ice powers that can kill any man with ease. After extracting her revenge, she tries to escape from fulfilling her side of the deal by conceiving the devil's son. She thought that she was successful, but there was a twist! She was already pregnant from her rapists, and the devil had already claimed the unborn child as his own upon making the deal. The child actually being the source of her power as her body heat was being drained by the baby. Eventually, the woman became to cold to function and eventually freezes to death. Body turned black as her baby is forced to crawl out from the brittle corpse in order to be born.
    He was found and raised at a temple of Auril. It was not a happy childhood and he is often outcasted by other thanks to demonic appearance, steaming red skin, and haunting blue irises floating in a sea of black for eyes. As he grew older, Auril approached him in a dream. She told him of his origins and how his mother basically sold his soul to a devil which dooms him to an afterlife in hell. She offers to buy up his soul so that he can be given a chance to have a better afterlife, but he must become her conqueror and enforce her law in her domain. Figuring that being a cruel goddess's pet is better than being a servant of hell, he fights in her name. He was given the name Frostborn and the rest is history.
    If he survives Into the Abyss, this is the next adventure I want him to be a part of. Possibly with the goal of winning his soul back from her.

    • @asherdevin
      @asherdevin Před 4 lety

      Wouldn't that be counterproductive? He gave up his soul to the goddess so that she can keep it, thus stopping him from an eternity in hell. If he takes it back then he spends an eternity in hell. Not that Frostborn can't change his mind, maybe I missed something or something happened in the campaign, maybe she lied about hell for all I know. It just feels like a complete 180 for the character and possibly even turning him from a paladin to a crappy fighter, as this may cost him her favor and he'd lose access to all of his paladin magic.

    I can imagine a level 15+ wizard strong arming her by threatening to kill the entire population of the few cities that worship her. Set up an invisible glyph in a hidden location in or near each city. The condition for activating is someone attempting to remove it or the casting wizard failing to reset it before a 1 month time period. The spell the glyph activates would have to be some kind of contagious disease, maybe the creation of a feral ghoul.
    With that set up, a single wizard could threaten to destroy 99% of her worshipers if she doesn’t keep him both safe and happy.
