Eachine P-51D Mini Mustang Stabilized 4 Channel Stunt Trainer Plane Flight Test Review

  • This ready to fly fighter plane is a ton of fun for intermediate and above fliers. Fast and maneuverable, it can be flown fully stabilized while still allowing stunt aerobatics. If you get into trouble in a stunt, just let go of the sticks and the plane will quickly and automatically level itself. Find it here bit.ly/MustangP51D
Interesting side note, the plane is painted out as "Bunnie" "Miss Kentucky State", of the 332nd Fighter Group (Tuskegee Airmen) bit.ly/BunnieP-51D
    Pros
    - Ready to fly with included transmitter.
    - True four channel airplane with throttle, elevator, rudder, and aileron control.
    - Three selectable flight modes. Beginner mode includes full 6 axis stabilization (3 axis gyro and 3 axis accelerometer). Also includes angle restrictions that prevent the aircraft rolling or pitching over. Intermediate "Midd" mode also includes 6 axis stabilzation, but turns off pitch angle restrictions to allow manual stunts. Expert mode turns off all stabilization for fully aerobatic manual flying.
    - Controller also includes a stunt button that allows the airplane to automatically conduct loops and aileron rolls.
    - Quick disconnect propeller saver automatically disconnects the propeller in a crash to prevent propellor or motor damage. Propeller can be quickly reattached after the crash to continue flying.
    - Constructed of flexible and crash resistant EPP foam.
    Cons
    - Although fully stabilized to lessen the chance of crashes, it is a bit fast for beginner pilots. Beginners might have difficulty flying this as they won't have much time to react and correct beginner's mistakes (particularly if they lose orientation).
    - One key return feature did not seem to work with mine.
    - Brushed motor airplane. Its motor will eventually fail some day.
    - Short flight time of about 5 minutes. Although this comes with two or three batteries, it is very important to allow about 15 minutes of rest time between flights to lessen the chance of overheating and failing the brushed motor.

definite possibility, placed so the fore/aft CG is the same, the extra 3 grams (roughly) of the AIO fpv could be OK. might also bump up from 350mah to 380-400mah, the little more weight down low compensating a little for the weight of the cam higher up. might mean carving into the canopy some, view of the nose and spinning prop on your screen to be expected but it'd still be pretty cool.

Folks. I've been flying RC craft as long as Quadcopter 101. In fact, for 40 years. You cannot slap a camera on everything. If you want video, then a quad is the way to go. FPV a plane? Got to go minimum 2 cell. I have my Sky King F-959 with a camera. That happens to be a Quadcopter 101 favorite too. It does OK as a small FPV platform but please folks, don't go smaller..

Hi Quadcopter 101. I noted in your review you mentioned using rudder in addition to aileron. I've watched some youtube videos and done the tutorials on RealFlight 9 and they say to do turns pretty much exclusively with ailerons and a bit of up elevator. If anything, I have read rudder should be used in a counter input direction to ailerons. However, I have noted with the Volantex Sport Cub 500 that a bit of rudder in the same stick direction as aileron seems to make the plane turn a it quicker. Is it ever "proper" to use rudder in the same stick direction as aileron? How did you use rudder when flying the Mustang?

Great flying little plane. The weak point is the flimsy controller horn and the breakaway propeller hub. They will both break before the motor he mention for sure in my experience with 4 of this type of plane. Btw. Hand launch the plane and don’t ever try to land this on a concrete runway. Just found a nice soft area and soft land with motor off before landing/crash. It is 100% impossible to land without flip over.

press one as far as it'll go one direction till it stops working/beeping, then use the other button to count how many beeps till it stops. then back to the 1st button for half as many beeps. NOW look to adjusting the control surfaces to be neutral/centered. not hard, hopefully you wont have to make any adjustments but you'll know centered will be correct with full adjustment left right up down to be "clickable" when needed.

Yes, move the left throttle stick full up then full down to arm the throttle. After you do that, slowly move the left throttle stick up and the motor should start. If the motor still doesn't arm, then the plane's battery is not fully charged, or you need fresh batteries in the controller.

    • @Quadcopter101
      @Quadcopter101  Před 4 lety

Yes it easily takes off from the ground. Sounds like your elevator pitch control may have accidentally been reversed. Check your pitch control to make sure that it's not reversed. Pull back on the right stick. Does the elevator move up? If it instead moves down when you pull back, replug in the battery and place the plane on the ground. Before arming the throttle, move and hold the right pitch stick back until the control's reversed (i.e. the elevator moves up when you pull back on the right stick). Then arm the motor by moving the left stick up and down to set it. Make sure to also check your other controls to make sure that none of them have been accidentally reversed. You can reset them the same way.

Re One Key Return function. "The aircraft remembers the direction it was pointing when it took off..." You sure about that? Might it not be the direction in which it was pointing when the activate button was pushed after binding or even the direction it was pointing when the motor was subsequently armed. Granted they are usually all the same but if say someone set it up on a table then placed it on a runway for launch they might be in for an interesting surprise. Similarly for someone landing and then taking off in a different direction and expecting it to "remember the direction it took off." Kudos for emphasizing the reading of the manual first though. Adding an occasional description link to your excellent "How to determine orientation at a distance" and "Headless explained" videos might be thought indulgent by the experienced elite but would undoubtedly help a lot of us wombats in the lower skills & intellect echelons. For CZcams it might even be a "First!"

@@Quadcopter101 Because the Transmitter and receiver in this are also used in the 3-channel planes, when there are no aileron servos connected the 4-channel planes revert to 3-channel control with the rudder switched to the right stick. Check that the servo plug for the ailerons is seated properly or if the wiring/servo is open circuit. There is also the possibility that it could be just a chip glitch so try pulling the battery, re-powering the plane, sitting it on its feet and then restart the Tx (inside 5 seconds to do a re-bind of the Tx/Rx as per the manual.) A couple of posters have had this work if nothing else is kaput. Or it could be your Tx is defective - try a different Tx if you have 1 to hand. Or V761 protocol on a multi protocol radio.
