    Basically my favorite movie of all time. When I discovered this around Junior year (about 2010) I literally would watch it at least once a day. I'd continuously have it on in the background anytime I was home. I could (and still can to some degree) recite every line in this movie as well as tell you what the next scene would be.
    You should do Almost Famous and Empire Records if you haven't already.
    Can't believe you cut out so many Slater moments.
    Randall and his friends are 11th graders becoming Seniors. Mitch and his friends are eighth graders becoming freshmen.
    Different kind of paddling, this is an initiation to see how well your Freshmen year is going to go. (if the seniors think you're cool or not) Same with the girls, except I think the girls are mainly hazed by the Cheerleaders to see who would be accepted to join.
    Probably heard it on Family Guy, they've made several references to Dazed and Confused throughout the series.

    I was Class of 78 and this could have been a documentary with the exception of the initiations. We did not do that. But everything else, the kids, the coach, the music, the clothes, the keg party in the middle of nowhere, the BYOB club, all spot on.

    This came out about a year after High School. Me and my friends loved it, it was really accurate to how high school life was like. Keg parties, driving around doing stupid stuff everything. The hazing didn't really happen in school, but in sports the hazing was pretty brutal. But we took it as a rite of passage, we all knew it was coming. It was basically if you take it like a man, you gain respect and everyone the next week was all cool. Only guys that got more of it were the ones who got mad about it.
    Different times, but it really was a blast.

    "Alright, alright, alright."
    Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Matthew McConaughey, Marissa Ribisi, Wiley Wiggins, Joey Lauren Adams, Shawn Andrews, and Renée Zellweger (uncredited).
    Word Count Fact: The word "man" is said 203 times in this movie. The word "fuck" was used 59 times throughout this movie.
    Location Location Fact: The infamous hazing scene was shot at the old Americana Theater (out of operation at the time) located at 2200 Hancock Drive, just off Burnet Road in Austin, Texas. It is now the Yarborough Branch of the city library, but still retains some of the original exteriors and signs from this movie's era.
    On Set Fighting Fact: Shawn Andrews and Jason London did not get along during filming. At one point, Richard Linklater had to break up a fight between them. It changed the ending, which was going to feature Pickford (Shawn Andrews) instead of Wooderson (Matthew McConaughey). It also explains their almost total lack of dialogue despite sharing several scenes.
    Music Enthusiast Fact: Led Zeppelin recorded a song titled Dazed And Confused (1969) on the album Led Zeppelin 1 (1969). In the scene where Don Dawson (Sasha Jenson) gets Benny O'Donnell (Cole Hauser) out of wood shop, just after Don gets Ron Slater's (Rory Cochrane) attention to signal Benny, listen for Slater's disbelief at Led Zeppelin's drummer John Bonham extended drum solos at concerts.

    I went to elementary and middle school from 82-91 in WV and EVERY year we had to have our parents check yes or no for the option for "corporal punishment" and have them sign it to give the trachers consent to paddle students. My mom never approved of letting other people paddle her kid. Only her! LOL! I think thery outlawed it when I started my junior year in 1993. Pink (Jeremy London) has a twin brother names Jason who was in "Mallrats," a classic Kevin Smith movie, ewhich also had Joey Lauren Adams in it.

    'Slice of life' may be the phrase you were looking for.
    I was in HS in the 70's. Hair, clothes, setting, attitudes are all very accurate in this one. I never saw that sort of hazing, but maybe it happened somewhere.
    In elementary school, the paddle was referred to as the 'Board of Education.' One kid wrote the word 'We're' just above where the paddle was on the wall.

    In our town paddling happened well into the 80"s. The late 80.'s! According to my niece and nephew it's not like that anymore.

    Fantastic reaction! You really "got" it. It's big brother movie is George Lucas' "American Graffiti" (1973) which takes place last night of the summer, 1962. Basically youth culture of the 1950s, before the 60s took hold. The difference (and also similarity) in culture between the two movies is amazing, and it all took place in the intervening years between the two films' time periods. An object lesson! Definitely highly recommending "American Graffiti". Like "Dazed And Confused", the soundtrack for it is incredible.

      PS: We never had paddling or any kind of initiation rites in my surburban town.....but other than that, this is the most accurate recreation of the 70s I can think of on film. They NAILED it in a million different ways.

      @BlackSmokeDMax Před 2 měsíci

      @@TTM9691 we had a much lighter version of the hazing in the mid 80s in our rural-ish area is Wisconsin.
      By the time I graduated in the late 80s it was much more rare, so it kind of died off quickly. Didn't even really get shut down by adults, just kind of faded away.

    Damn I just started your Game of Thrones reactions so this is surprise! Dazed and Confused is one of my all time favorite movies. On the urine test thing it's amazing how that sort of thing is normalized for us now but I'm sure back then it was probably really weird and invasive for them to do that to average people.

    This is one of those movies for me that just takes me back to my high-school years....not really the styles and such, but the people and what we did those 4 years. But we had cooler clothes in the early 90's lol.
    They didnt really drug test until the late 90's.....i was in high-school in the early 90's. An din the 70's they would paddle you, a teacher got fired for paddling me with rulers she broke over my ass...i grabbed the pieces and took them to my parents. She was fired shortly after.

    I imagine it varies depending on where you live. I grew up in a small town, but my freshmen year was spent at a larger city school. The freshmen hazing consisted of juniors giving seniors a hit list. What actually happened was up to the seniors, but it rarely involved anything approaching physical abuse.

    7:37 Back in the day, we used to have initiation or hazing for the incoming grade 9 class. Where I lived we did it the first week back of the new school year but we'd have to do humiliating things like dress up in costumes dictated by the older kids and take part in stupid challenges. They stopped doing that in the 90s because people took it too far and kids got hurt.

    This would be in my top 5 favouite movies. So many great characters and a fantastic soundtrack. Pity you didn't watch it around late May/Early June. It's a perfect movie for the beginning of summer. Adam Goldberg is the guy from Friends and Saving Private Ryan. I always identified with his character the most in this film.

  • @ChrissaTodd
    @ChrissaTodd Před 8 měsíci +2

    if you think about it the initiation was always fine for kids cause those kids knew once they become seniors they'll be able to do it too
    ben affleck and the girl yelling air raid were just the characters who took it way too seriously and enjoyed it way too much.

    no drug tests in the 80s. I played varsity baseball taking west coast turnarounds and black beauties and hit .672 with 6 homers..lol Baseball was interesting on acid, too. West Coast Turnarounds were trucker pills of Benzedrine. Keep you up for 2 days. Smoked weed outside school on lunch. And yet we still became the greatest generation since WWII, considering we invented all of the technology you now use.

    It's not the first movie of it's kind. In the early 70's there was a movie with a similar narrative called American Graffiti' that George Lucas directed, which is set in the 50's. Now that would be a great reaction video.
