I love Dr Tyson's delivery method of advance thoeries, makes me feel like I'm temporarily intelligent
peefectly described lol
Chuck does it best. After Neil finishes a speech or long winded explanation, Chuck is just like “whoa!… 🤯”
i hope they never stop making this podcast
it's extremely easy and probably doesn't cost that much so if they stopped it would probably be for other projects or laziness
Yes! Should be timeless just like the universe :-)
30 more years for grandpa Neil
das Dilemma you had to call it back then... 1 year and a new episodes only last week...

It's such a shame that we will never get to see Neil Degrasse Tyson interview Carl Sagan. What an epic interview that would be.
Not only is this worth listening to it’s worth listening to AT LEAST twice!
This show is what the world needs, truly hope it never ends.
My favourite answer to the question : "Do you want to live forever?" is : "I don't know yet ask me again after 500 years".
I like this guy more just because he actually seems to enjoy learning and listening as much as we do. Not as many interruptions :3 I also just like his voice
Listening to Neil Degrasse Tyson for 45min? Yes please!
About 5 hours a day for me!
Haja
I've been listening almost all day, love listening to this man speak, always learn something new
can’t wait to see you on Wednesday in Richmond VA!
this is the best guest host yet! he's super funny and has a way of actually keeping NGT on track.
oh buddy...
I think he definitely knows the questions and their answers beforehand
Very informative and enjoyable listen as usual. Thanks for everything
Love the podcast and glad I found it. I'm a meteorologist by training and trade, but I also have lots of audio experience from working on Radio. Suggestion: There's a little switch on your mics. Make sure the switches are set to the "/" mark. That will sharpen your voices a bit. Things sound a little muffled to me. Also, those RE-20 mics can be fitted with pop-screens to take care of the occasional "P-Popping", a common problem in Radio. Thanks Neil! Keep up this program... we need more people to be inspired to use their brains.
In spanish we call'em "Sol", "Luna" and "Tierra" so that part about their names fascinates me in a weird way lol
@@spiguy tierra*
Yeah, and we also call "luna" to other natural satellites, so I am still wondering what our Moon's name is
In swedish we call em "Sol", "Måne" and "Tellus", but most commonly "Jorden" which directly translates to the word for "Earth" or actually "Dirt" xD But yeah, "Sol" is a very common word for our sun in many many languages.
@@Baleur are the articles male or female for sol Måne and Tellus? Because in german it`s the exact opposite of the roman languages and therefor the complete opposite association. So I`m wondering what it`s like in swedish
That because Spanish is a Latin derived language, so would be similar in the other romance languages (French, Portuguese, Italian, Romanian, etc.)
I really love this show.
NEIL DeGRASSE TYSON your the first and only person that actually made me interested in listening to science, specially astrophysics. I was never interested in stars, planets, space, universe and galaxies.... I'm not smart nor young and never once have i ever felt bored listening to your explanations and interviews , you sure know how to inspired and connect with others making everything science interesting...
The only reason i subscribed to this channel is because your the actual host, i thank you for sharing your knowledge with me and everyone in this universe and beyond...
Nice. Another day to learn and be fascinated............
He should go by "your friendly neighborhood astrophysicists" since he live in NY
No
Yes I remember watching about that star and hypothesis about drawing energy from the star on TED. Now I realized that Kepler has actually found the location of Nidavellir... Awesome
Makes me happy i am a speck in the universe 🌻
eugene is gene from bobs burgers i just realised!
Holy shit his voice is the same i just realized that
And Cheryl's brother!
Lol
That was driving me crazy I couldn't pinpoint where I heard his voice before
Yeah he’s a downer. I thought he’d be funny, but he’s boring.
This is one of the best ones!
Lockdown
Watching it again and again
Thanks 🌟🗣
Love from India 🙏
If you are drunk, do not watch this. I am still cleaning my brain off the wall.
Sh4d0wsn4k3 What if I'm stoned?
What if i'm both????
Being stoned is the only way I could retain all of this information
Bring stoned is the only way . . .
~pPp~
fuck! don't tell me that now.
Neil I dont think the question about gravity waves and a mile piano sting was about seeing if a piano string produces a detectable gravity wave. He is asking if we could use a mile long piano string to DETECT a gravitational disterbance in spacetime. He's asking if the gravitational disterbance would vibrate the strink.
It would certainly vibrate, but we are talking less then the size of a proton. So it would be impossible for human senses to detect, you need high precision gear and vacuum to try and eliminate all other factors.
Oh in that case it would have to be way, way longer than a mile, and at that point it would be harder to keep it tense and straight.
I was looking for this
if we were able to detect gravitational waves with a mile long piano string I think the gravitational waves would be strong enough to destroy earth or something like that.
Yup. It's not going to be sensitive enough. They barely get a response from long laser beams with detectors sensitive enough that they have to account for the gravitational effects of passing traffic.
Hi. Regarding the areas of the universe where time could be melting reminds me of The Persistence of Memory
painting by Salvador Dali.
Smoked a bowl and now I'm really into this talk. Didn't notice how long it was.
Chuck has a hilarious joke every 100 sentences he says. With Eugene I can't help but laugh my ass off the whole time. I'm not totally wrong
Microtubule obvious difference between a black hole and a white hole.
I dont know why the two need to be compared, they're entertaining in their own ways. But i find Chuck's enthusiasm and humor very essential to the show and do not enjoy episodes nearly as much without him.
I like both
We all LOVE you Niel, please please please go back on compound media. Ant totally respects you, GO ON IT!!!
I'd love to see the calculation of the different levels of time dilation. Earth vs center of milky way, or Earth vs the void between galaxies (between Milkyway / Andromeda for example)

Nice episode, a lot of mind-boggling things got unveiled to me.
Very interesting video thank you for sharing
Eugene is back heck yeah.
Danger Ranger this is from 2015...
Danger Ranger this is old new shit is on podcast if you have apple bud
Start talk the gateway into the science world of CZcams!
Powerful NGT
Ah a fellow Joe Rogan fan :)
I love your star talk mr de xxx
Based on my extensive knowledge on black holes and cuantum physics, i knew the first question would be from patreon
I can only think of Led Zeppelin and their Immigrant song when I hear StarTalk's intro
always waiting for that "aaahh haaaaaa aaaaa" XD
Love you guys keep up!
The album is also called Mothership so it kind of make sense for a space talk :P
omg i love this so much
I agree completely . Eugene is really funny . Chuck is a good guy and kindof ok funny ...sometimes ... But EUGENE Rises above easy . Grats to all of you , love the show
As a Mexican; Im sorprised and exited to know that the names of the Sun, Moon and Earth are the ones we use in Spanish (with the exception of Terra, we use Tierra... almost the same)!!! Thanks for that piece of information!!!
I love Eugene
Eugene!!!
Great Bolshy Yarblockos he sucks and is dumb and doesn't get Neil's humor
did Eugine just make a my name Jeff joke
I, in Portuguese, Moon is Lua, Earth is Terra and Sun is Sol :) Greath Show!
Nossa lingua, assim como o idioma espanhol e italiano, derivam do latim ...e apresentam muitas palavras que podemos entender dessas outras culturas. Acho isso bacana.
Great stuff
So interesting, I hope StarTalk goes on even after the universe will end :P
6:49 I like the pronunciation “Kupier” better. Can we vote change it from kuiper to kupier?
Neil are you hiring 👏
Love startalk
Nothing ever really stops
26:12 I think they misunderstood the question that Jared asked. He asked if it was possible to observe gravitational waves using a mile long piano string, not create them. It's a good question, kinda wish it was answered.
the movie you were thinking of is "In Time" with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried from 2011
cody2198 And Cillian Murphy a.k.a. Thomas fooking Shelby!!!
And the other one was "Elysium" with Matt Damon, i think.
I really, really, really like this comedian.. He is more mild and more like for this show, cz it's all serious and stuff.. 😁
Btw, Transparent aluminum does exist, It is a form of aluminum that is see-through. Most commonly someone speaking about transparent aluminum is referring to AION (aluminum oxynitride), a ceramic alloy. However, aluminum can exist in an elemental, metallic form made transparent by bombarding with a soft x-ray laser.
Neil is the best. Another hero of mine.
Where do you submit the questions for Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson?
30:02 "long, hard and deep" 😂
Giggidy
Neil he was talking about the gravity event hitting the mile long string and then we detect movements.
ikr! That kinda annoyed me. Dr. Tyson should've known that. ie. Replacing the laser[LIGO] with a piano string of similar length to detect Gravity waves. [for the rest who didn't pick it up].
To get to another level Dr. Tyson is talking about the Kardashev scale!
Man I love listening to an intelligent, articulate Human! Go NDT!
You haven't met me yet
I suggest for the next cosmic queries episode do the topic “Energy Generation”
love astronomy...
Excellent
The movie is called In Time. ;)
Eugene is back!
thanks a lot
"This october; 2015" how old is this vid?
I thought the same thing lol they waited 2 years to upload it
37:10 the movie you're referring to "In Time" (2011) where time is considered as a commodity
I support science... this is the only channel where i don't skip the ads
I'd love to see ndgt as himself on bobs burgers.
Never tought i had to correct Neil, sorry Doc: Earth: (english) Terra: (latin) Gea or Gaia (mythological name, as Gea was a goddess (geography)), Sun: (English) Helios: (mythological name), Moon: (English) Luna: (latin) Selene: (mithological name from a godess). Im sorry Doc, i am sorry, i didn't want to correct you but you got me started, love, a fan of yours.
I'd like to know if there's a hypothetical way to simulate the effects that speed has on time. In other words, could we simulate the slowing down of time effect that traveling very fast creates? Would it possible by simply spinning really fast? Or maybe create some kind of pod which is surrounded by something that creates a strong electromagnetic field, and spin that outer shell really fast. Something of that nature. Maybe it would require a small circular track which would mean actual travelling distance vs. spinning on a single point.
I'm in love
That "IN TIME" movie reference
So hyped
I HAVE BOUGHT 4 NEIL BOOKS SINCE LISTENIN
ohh i remember Eugene from flight of the conchords!
This is definitely the smartest comedian you've had on there.
I think about all of this when I’m jus sitting around Zooted 😂
So, my intuitive understanding of a causal set is that a causal set is the smallest possible scale at which the causal order holds!! Causal order because spacetime is causally ordered due to the time element of spacetime?? So, I take it that a causal set would be on the order of the Planck Scale??
At 2:12, Neil said that it is theoretically possible to travel back in time, unless some "universal law of physics preventing that". This law might be the conservation of the energy - if some object goes back in time even 1 second, this means that in the past you will have two objects (doubling the energy according to E=mc^2), while at the present, this object virtually disappear, so suddenly energy is destroyed at present, while it appear in the past - adding to already existing energy of the already existing object (for example electron, proton... atom, macro object...). My thought is that time travel is not possible.
“Back in my day we used our faces to make emoticons”
Back in my day we used text to make emojis
mitzapper2 I scrolled by this right as he started saying it
Back in my day we used ansi characters to draw images in dot matrix printers and BBS chat rooms.
A key issue with commanding all the energy of our host star is that we would, essentially, block out the sun, which would be catastrophic to our world. At best, we would likely be able to safely harness 25 to 40% of it, and that is specifically calculating that we can predict all shifts in orbital change... I think that a better solution, and in support of the next moon voyage, would be to harvest solar energy from the moon, and transport it back to earth, as we can safely predict the amount of exposure to the photo-voltaic cells to a measurable energy transfer back to earth.
Yes. Next question.
Eugene!
Charge your phone from tornados? That sounds like the Stormlight Archive.
It's too bad Dr. Tyson doesn't read these comments, but when he suggested that there may be a possibility that a weakening or stretching Higgs field could reduce the mass of particles because of the universe's rapid acceleration, my very first thought was that, this may explain the symmetry breaking that happened in the early universe, the reason why we have that inexplicable abundance of matter without its corresponding anti-matter.
Mr Scott, "Computer?"
Scientist, "(points at mouse...)"
Mr Scott, "Oh yeah," grabs the mouse, puts to his mouth, "Computer?"
LOL HILARIOUS
A perfect argument to discourage time travel.
"Try the keyboard"
"Oh, how quaint"
😂
Can anyone explain me how objects of any kind sent from Earth can go past the Kuiper Belt?
Did anyone else get their mind blown about the question of space being continuous or granular? (If you're a math nerd, it'll make you question Cantor's infinite set theory - since math is supposed to correspond to reality).
People keep asking about periodicity of Tabby's Star 'structure' and wondering why astronomers don't care that they haven't found one. Consider: observations have amount to very little time (only 4 years or so, I think); our best guess is a busted-up comet; comets orbit a *long* way out - for Sol that's the Kuiper Belt 30-55AU out, which makes the periodicity about 200 years.
Is the Universe so fine grained that it is essentially smooth and continuous?
So we spanish speakers got it right
Earth= Tierra
Moon= Luna
Sun= Sol
Wolfgang goethe spanish comes from latin, so thats kinda normal
And it’s Terra, not Tierra for the Latin... if we are being specific
I love how this comment irreverently disregards the respect for antiquity shown by the decision to keep the names Latin.
I guess that might not be clear if you're not a native English speaker. Consider if your country had an emergent technology and decided to name everything in Greek. You'd be showing reverence for something that happened in Greece.
Pedant here. To calculate weight on Mars you MULTIPLY by .4 or DIVIDE by 2.5.
Transparent Aluminium/Aluminum kinda HAS been invented, it's the actual reason it is in the movie. Just the year before that movie was made the Patent was applied for.
It's called ALON, aluminium oxynitride, saphire glass.
"One litre of molten space...." sounds quite the beverage....literally out of this world.....✌😉
Get it Neil. Skateboarders from Texas
We need an update on this
Wow this is an old episode from 2015
That's ok. Enjoying it in 2019 :)
