  • Explore more than the eye can see as Neil deGrasse Tyson, comic co-host Chuck Nice, and Kimberly Arcand, Visualization and Emerging Technology Lead for NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, answer fan-submitted questions to uncover the X-ray universe and beyond.
Discover more about the Chandra X-ray Observatory as it prepares to celebrate its 20th anniversary from launch. We discuss why different kinds of light in the electromagnetic spectrum are like different tools in the toolbox of astronomy. Learn about the evolution of X-ray imaging. Neil tells a story about Riccardo Giacconi, the father of X-ray astrophysics, and how his work impacts our daily security. Kim shares what she thinks would be the most exciting discovery via X-ray telescope. You’ll hear about the differences between Chandra and the James Webb Space Telescope. Get details about Lagrangian points and how they keep things in place. Explore the process that goes into naming telescopes.
You’ll also hear about how much “more” we can see with Chandra than we can see with the naked eye. We ponder what light spectrum we will observe the universe in next. We also ponder the problem of trying to observe something too big for us to comprehend. Find out if there will ever be a Google Maps for the universe. Or, better yet, if there will ever be a Stellar Cartography room like in Star Trek.
We discuss if virtual reality will ever allow the human brain to fully comprehend the enormity of the universe and the distances between celestial objects. Kim takes us through the process of turning Chandra X-ray data into beautiful visual imagery. We also discuss the idea of measuring visible light in energy, not color. All that, plus, Chuck finds out that Isaac Newton had a bigger impact on his life than he ever thought!

I think that neil finds it refreshing to hear some of the ways Chuck relates the tried and true science to Hollywood. But yeah, sometimes he is frustrated how either the educational system, or Chuck himself, has impeded his scientific growth. Sometimes you just have to take a break from complicated life to reset and return to refreshed to explore further. Sometimes a fresh look at something can be profitable and invaluable.

I am a musician also, studied classical harmony as a music major. There is so much physics around the harmonic overtone series that we depend upon for our brand of music, i.e., Western European harmony (diatonic tones). Eastern Asian harmony (micro tones) is way different. Our "ear" is conditioned to standard orchestral "tuning" (e.g. the 440 A) and most of our "pop" music is steeped in diatonic piano based harmony. Yes there are hybrid scales used in some pop music but very rare and found mostly in American blues; the bent third and seventh of the scale producing a micro tone "blues" note effect on guitar and other instruments including voice.

@@sacalius_papalagius I'm graduating Grad school soon as a Masters in music composition student, and I'm actually currently thinking about how I can relate my knowledge of harmonics (and overtones, etc.) as humans understand music to this greater understanding of wave patterns in the universe. In my experience there is overlap with everything. Regardless of what you choose, I think there will always be the option to incorporate the other (i.e. Majoring in physics and incorporating it into music by creating a new instrument or something OR Majoring in music composition and incorporating the physics of harmonics into your music [like I'm interested in]).

    • @theduder2617
      @theduder2617 Před 4 lety +2

Fox and Nat-Geo absolutely refuse to acknowledge that question in any way what so ever. You won't even get a response.
The ONLY comment they have made was in February.
"Fox and National Geographic are committed to finding an air date for ‘Cosmos. There will be no further comment."
And there hasn't been. Probably won't be either.
There is a chance no matter how small, that episodes are being recorded at this moment. Unlikely, but possible.
Since even Neil himself refuses to even mention the show anymore, it a safe assumption that is could have been stopped all together.
It is now time to relentlessly ask Seth about an air date. After all, he is in a position to know EXACTLY what's going on.
I say that because it is clear Neil either will not, or can not speak about it in any way what so ever.
He used to speak about the show a LOT. Until the lies that is.
Below is simply my opinion based on the recent events which involved blatant lies.
      ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Probably lost faith in humanity due to all of the mindless who could not wait to jump into the canoe of hate based on NO factual data what so ever.
Everyone simply sided with the lies merely because "a female said it".
Their mindset was "why would a woman lie about that?" FREE MONEY is exactly why.
It angered me, so I assume he was not happy about it either. Shoot, the mouth breathers are still bringing up those lies as if they were ever true to begin with.
I'm just happy he still does StarTalk.
I wouldn't have blamed him for cutting ties with the public since most of public can be rather intentionally uneducated.

@@theduder2617 - I can agree with all that. I will try to ask Seth through whatever means I can find, his Twitter etc, or look to see if he's mentioned it anywhere.

If Neil is going to nit pick, his issue should be with the use of the word 'weighs' instead of 'has a mass of'

    • @1995DylanJ

Depending on how the light was created its polarity is different, so I would imagine there is a way to measure that. However in energy "natural" and "man-made" light ought to be indistinguishable
