Toilet flange … an everlasting challenge! So far in my career I have not come across one toilet repair that I could properly screw flange to the substrate while working. Not one! Been following BRT for a while and noticed how he always installs substrate plywood tight against PVC pipe and then tile as well later on. Seven thumbs up Steve. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 This is a great video presentation for anyone who wants to know about options. You’ll need them.

A few times you mentioned the twist and set reducing the diameter. Plumbers always say that as well, so measure the diameter coming out of any toilet. It’s actually smaller than the twist and set diameter. American Standard has the largest diameter exiting the toilet and it’s still smaller than the twist and set. So no worries.

I was worried about setting my toilet on a flange that is flush to the tiles. I've seen online that it should be 1/4 inch above the floor. Your video tells me I'm worrying too much. Will add a jumbo wax ring and cross my fingers. Now if only I can set my toilet back as smoothly as you! Thanks for the video

Is this video part of the course? I've been trying to find it but I cannot. Maybe it is split between all the other videos, but this right here is the best, going over all combinations.

Going through this right now. The house is 50 years old and has 3" copper waste pipe that feeds to the main. The flange was brass (nailed to the floor) and the height was too high for tile, thinset and ditra, and also slots were beginning to strip. I tried heating up the joint to pry it, but it wasn't budging. I ended up cutting out from under, and am using the Fernco 3007-33 shielded coupling to properly join 3" pvc to the 3" copper. Wasted way too much time on it, but at least it'll be correct! Former owners also double stacked the wax ring with some type of rubber funnel seal thing in the middle too. They were supposed diy'rs (and I need to hear all about it from neighbors), but their work is all pretty much garbage.

The most benevolent thing you can do when installing a flange in a scenario like this or anywhere it is easy to do is use the flange the slips and glues over the OD of the pipe. The reason being is that if the flange ever has to be replaced once the downstairs ceiling is covered over or the tile is set, it is far easier to drill out the slip over flange with a large hole saw and drop in a new flange that goes on the inside of the pipe. You can cut out the flange with a 4" holesaw, leave the glued part in situ, and slip the new flange right inside.
