What is the mud you used for the SCHLUTER KERDI-BAND
done 2 bathrooms with GoBoard and loved working with it. I have never been able to find the screws anywhere however. Thanks for the tips!
It’s 8” with GoBoard Blue screws. 12” with their screws with the big washers. 6” if you use Hardi backer screws. For the handy men and DIYers out there drywall screws will be fine at whatever screw schedule you usually go by.
I've been following your bathroom renovation projects and appreciate the insights you share. I recently conducted a detailed exploration into the safety and installation practices concerning foam core backer boards, specifically focusing on the critical role of wood blocking for secure grab bar installations. Our findings highlight the potential risks and structural integrity issues that can arise from omitting wood blocking, even with the most reliable materials and techniques.
Given the importance of safety and durability in renovations, I thought this information could be beneficial to your projects and audience. Incorporating wood blocking can significantly enhance the strength and safety of grab bar installations, a detail that's often overlooked.
I'd be happy to share our findings and discuss further. Keep up the great work, and thank you for sharing your knowledge with the community!
Just want to say that I've been watching your videos for awhile. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and am glad you finally have your own channel
Thank you so much for making this video! This has been the most helpful/thorough backer board install video I have seen yet.
I used GoBoard in both of my new bathrooms and I would use it again. It's worth noting that they are made of fiberglass not foam like polystyrene Kerdi Board or similar. Regardless, they perform the same function, were much easier to work with than cement board and more competitively priced than Schluter, but care should be taken when handling it and cutting it. The gray outer face isn't too bad to touch without gloves but the unsealed inner core can be irritating, literally and figuratively, when cutting it or touching the exposed edges. In my case, gloves and a mask helped to keep liberated fiberglass particles off my skin and out of my eyes and lungs.
IT'S MADE OUT OF POLYISO
SAME STUFF USED FOR EXTERIOR POLYISO INSULATION BOARDS
@@21boxheadis that a good thing or bad thing? 😂
Compared to Durock for shower wall prep
Maybe the face is fiberglass and the core of this is polyiso and both are true. I'll be finding out tomorrow! Hehe
@@DaPepeLapapa8 NO IT'S NOT FIBERGLASS AT ALL
IT'S POLYISO BOARD
MAINLY USED IN EXTERIOR INSULATION BUT I THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA FOR TILE FOR BATHROOM
@@ohokayofficial I THINK THIS IS BETTER IT'S MUCH LIGHTER THAN DUROCK AND DON'T NEED TO BE WATER PROOFED AS MUCH AS THE DUROCK JUST THE ENDS AND SCREWS
WITH THE DUROCK YOU WILL NEED TO WATER POOF THE ENTIRE BOARD
I can't wait to start working on a bathroom in a future house! Thanks for the vids!
great video. appreciate taking the time to film and explain
I like the way you doing the orange tipped water proof and clean job
Great Video!! Thanks!! You are a Master!!!
I've never encountered the idea of a sister stud, though I have reinforded a rotted ordamaged stud by fastening a stud to the side. The way you used it is brilliant. I'd have spent hour cutting tapered shims. Thank you!
Great video. Thank you. Subscribed.
Great video, thank you!
So informational good to know stuff!
15:21 Good job here and glad doing. I’ve seen many ppl not do this or just don’t care and don’t, thinking “everything will be fine” once all is installed etc….
¹ Granted, there are diff ways to do “this step” along w/ waterproofing systems; so ok if not using this particular method, but whatever method using for a shower/tub install…..don’t forget the waterproofing system and all the steps that needs to be done, imo.
Excellent video! I love how you do the voice over with your face showing. Adds a personal element to the video.
I have checked but do you happen two have any tile videos I watch most your videos on electric and plumbing among some others
Excellent job and informative
Thx, very helpful
I recently used go board on shower install.. used aqua defense n 6 inch fabric on seams. 3x coat. Works perfectly.. used Kerdi pan Kerdi band on floor to wall w thinset. 3x Aqua defense on that too (overkill probably). Whole thing turned out great. Oh used Kerdi drain too.. went on good. 3x coated that too. 👏. Can u mix systems. Absolutely yes.
Liquid waterproof is great insurance! 👍
just be careful with paint on waterproofing. If it is too thick, that can fail just as it being too thin.
Do you need redguard or kerdi on top of go board or is it ready to go with tiling?
About time you put something on the shower pan
I’d say
I see on their website that there is an option for seam fabric at all the joints. Is this fabric something you have used, would recommend or is it necessary? It sounds to me like its extra insurance but would like to know your thoughts. Thanks
do you recommend putting go board over a shower pan lip? or resting it on the lip and just filling that void with caulk
Ever found the answer? I've seen both ways...
I know it’s a year later but the go board instructions actually say to rest the board on top of the lip on a nice bed of their adhesive. The tile will overlap the lip and then caulk the bottom with silicone.
would you come back and apply drywall mud up against that kerdi band to feather it out?
The surface of those boards is a coated fiberglass. Handling it and especially cutting it, releases a lot of those fibers. You'll regret installing it without gloves. At least I did before I realized why my hands were so irritated.
Hahaha 😆 . I literally just did the same didn't realize till my hands where fucked. I was shaving it with a razor blade here and there and my hands are trashed.
You'll be fine grow yourself some man skin 😂
Yuuup
Not telling anybody how to do anything, but if it were me, I would nail the top and bottom and check the middle with a straight edge and adjust and nail then.
one question how sturdy is that goboard in comparison with hardie board or cement board? If you where to fall and hit the wall would it break?
So i take it mixing and matching products is not an issue,i know you like Schluter but the tubes and Kerri and goboard are different based on their own materials?
Can this be used when installing acrylic panels, swanstone, flexstone etc?
How did you finish the outside corner where GB and drywall meet?
I prefer to use the proflex for my corners coming out of a shower. Mud on the outside and thinset on the inside.
Do you have a link to the proflex?
Is that corner bead necessary if you're coming all the way out with the tile to the corner? I usually have my tile trim come off the corner by an 1/8th, and then mud it. Merry Christmas.
Do the boards have tapered edges to form a channel to fill with sealent like drywall does? Or are you building up a 1/32 - 1/16" layer over a flat surface where they meet? Love the content btw. You out here making us money, bro. Cant thank you enough.
Recently bought go board from local tile store and they included washers much like Kerdi does. Said it was “new” recommendation from manufacturers. Thanks for posting this just about to start mine and sorta nervous I might mess it up. How do you finish edge of kerdi band on drywall by window?
Yeah, I just saw they came out with the washers. Not sure if they are requiring them yet, but probably a good idea to use. If the windows is outside of shower area, I’d say the same way. Might be best to remove trim to get under it. I did something similar on this one with Wedi.
czcams.com/video/7DtJsYQAAH4/video.html
Can you use regular sheet rock screws to install this? I didnt see the big silver fender washers thats used on the other systems. Thanks and love the channel!
No! Any backerboard screw is acceptable. GoBiard has different screwing schedules for each.
Hey man loving your videos! Keep up the great work. This might be a stupid question but what is typically done at the ceiling corners in this situation are they taped? Or just left alone as tile will go all the way up?
I usually leave alone. Unless it’s a steam shower…I don’t see the point in sealing that area. And really waterproofing above shower head is just bonus 👍 you’ll be caulking that joint after tiling too
I seal it.
Which way is better? Use furring strips to overcome the lip of the shower pan/bathtub or make a notch out the back of the backer board just enough to compensate for the lip? I've seen both ways done in youtube videos.
what kind of screws are those? They are not in your links and the image is too small. Thanks
hi, what thickness was that go board?
🔥🔥🔥🔥
You said that for the Kerdi band application thinset was used but at one point you are saying something about drywall mud. Were you trying to say that drywall mud can also be used instead of the thinset?
Quick stupid question. I have metal frames can you use wood on the medal frame to make it flush with the flange?
Yeah definite You probably want self taping screws to mount them though. 👍
Steve, how necessary is the valve seal? I could be wrong, but don’t think I’ve seen Winni do that?
I think valve seals are great extra insurance. Some valve trims are not that good at sealing to tile. But yeah it’s not a required item or anything 👍
Sometimes the shower pan wall edges are not straight. Mine had the back edge and one end edge were bowed. I thought my walls were a mess until I discovered that.
can you tell me what seal that is?
I was able to get some GoBoard for my project, but was not able to find any GoBoard sealant. Can I use the Prova Sealant as an alternative? Been hooked on your videos BTW since I decided to do the 3 bathrooms on my own.
Was going say, yeah any of the poly sealants of other systems should work (except kerdi fix). Must be a shortage?
Thanks for watching my videos 👍
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher GoBoard has a list of approved sealants on their website. Liquid Nails FUZE-IT is on the list.
Do you have a video using the go board with the Schluter shower pan for curbless shower?
Not with go board. But that’s definitely a ez way to go (and way less than kerdi board) method would be the same with banding corners 👍

Modified thin set or unmodified?
I have 2 questions if you don't mind ,,,,,So I was gonna ask what your solution was to the offset at the back wall after furring out ,but saw at the end of video the drywall and go board were flush ,,I can only assume you furred out that whole adjacent section too? what do you suggest if its not possible to fur out the entire wall ,,do you have a solution?
You also just used 1/2 inch plywood for your bench backing ,,is that thick enough to hold your bench ?
Thanks
It was 3/4” plywood for bench because that wall needed 3/4” furring. If your aligning with existing drywall or can’t fur out. Set board on top of flange and fill with sealant. Similar to this tub install czcams.com/video/X93JNDaXR50/video.html

Go board is awesome. Only problem is the John's Manville go board sealant, which they recommend for warranty, is NEVER in stock anywhere! I usually have to order it off of Amazon well before a job.
OSI is another sealant approved by JM and it's always available at the big box stores.
@@leozmaxwelljilliumz3360 what make of OSI specifically is it?
16 bucks a 10 Oz tube ? I'm thinking go back to a hardi or cement use up my maipai roll on waterproofed. I see guys using loctite sealants
I used OSI one time and it stunk up the customers bathroom for days! I hate it's overwhelming smell. @@leozmaxwelljilliumz3360
@@blaq7892I get the sausage tubes for my battery sausage gun double the size and $17
I noticed the sealant is somehow connected to the electric screwdriver. How is it connected? I've never seen it before.
Are you using treated wood to sister and for the overlay lip?
not necessary
Isn’t the lip that comes up off the pan where you’re supposed to stop the backerboard and then the gap is made up by the tile to prevent wicking? Obviously with waterproof board like this it wouldn’t be an issue but is that correct or is adding furring strips always right thing to do? Great video as always!
It’s foam, no wicking will happen
Plus there’s a 1/4” bead of sealant first
Tub surround- used GoBoard. I have a window in the shower that I am going to put schluter seam tape all around for extra insurance and then ceramic tile over the GoBoard. Tile box says modified thinset but from what I read you want to use unmodified thinset over GoBoard so it will cure properly. I can't find a straight up answer anywhere. Which type of thinset do I use for the schluter tape and tile over GoBoard?
Yeah Schluter has created the whole controversy on that. Most thinset manufacturers will warrant they bonding of membranes. Schluter won’t warrant its stuff over go board anyways. But to answer your question, it is recommended to use unmodified thinset between two waterproof materials
Your video is great. But I'm confused about this: after furring the studs and adding the goboard, how can that be flushed with the purple wall? what goboard size are u using?
You might have to watch again, or read tutorial in my course - bathroomremodeling.teachable.com/p/tub-shower-bathroom-remodel-in-7-days-or-less
I shimmed out entire wall on right side 👍
How would you dress the edge of the tile to hide that extra thickness of the fur strips?
I noticed that you positioned the bottom piece of the Go Board over the flange of the pan, but in other videos you placed it right on the top. Which is correct? Thanks.
I'd love to have him weigh-in on this question, but the vibe I've gotten from his other work and things I've come across is that it kind of varies with the situation. Building out the studs to accommodate the boards going over the tile flange seems to be "best", but isn't always practical if you end up with difficulties lining the shower walls up with the neighboring drywall.
I can't find it at the moment, but he has a super short video where he talks about the ways to work around the tile flange and discusses these two methods.
Question, do you let the board sit on the shower pan itself or on the top of the lip? I've heard different opinions and not sure how to install it properly
Did you ever get an answer from someone? Was wondering the same
I always do top of lip then use kerdi band to waterproof bottom of go board to shower pan edges.
Have you ever used Goboard with a mud pan with a membrane? What membrane works best with goboard?
Yes, Schluter membrane 👍 works great 😊
How long did you wait after sealing the Goboard seams and screws before applying the Kerdi tape/valve seal with the thinset?
About an hour and a half or so. Doesn’t take long to set up enough to thinset over 👍
@@BathroomRemodelingTeacher Thank you
Have you ever used Ardex X5 to lay glass tiles around the bathtub? I am looking at some tiles 4"X10" and already bought the thinset but on the instructions doesn't mention glass tiles.
Do you have to have the weepholes to the shower pan open?
That type of base doesnt need weep holes as the drain it attached to the base itself
What size screws are you using? They have two sizes for these boards. Thank you
1 1/4” is mostly what I use 👍
Thank you! Awesome channel. Happy New Year!
Still OK to use that special green drywall board in a tub/shower area?
Nope, green board is not waterproof. Anything in a wet area should be waterproof 👍
One of the qualities of Go Board sealant is the fact it sets quickly. That can be frustrating because if the left too long between a seam it will curdle and become a lumpy mess if you happen to go over it with more sealant. I don't know why the sealant in this video doesn't do that.
So it doesn't need band on seams ???
What kind of sealant is it?
Thanks.
Go board sealant. You definitely want to order that along with the board 👍
why the firring strip on the wall stud?
No vapor barrier over the insulated wall
Where can I buy the goboard panels?
Menards
Could you just notch the foam on the bottom to fit over the flange?
If the flange doesn’t come out too much, for sure 👍 I find this to be easier. It’s easy to snap the notch when setting the notched go board
What is your thought on the washers with this?
They sell goboard tape and washers, but I never see anyone use them! Thoughts?
What goes between the goboards and the ceiling?
Caulk it
why not also use the sealant where the goboard meets the normal dry wall?
You could do that. But I really wanted the kerdi membrane to span and go along side of shower pan 👍
Where can I get hold of go board??👍👍
Hope there isn’t a shortage. But you can get off Amazon. amzn.to/3yWZI4S
Menards sells it in the Midwest.
I notice you did not waterproof the ceiling of the shower. Why? Would not the vapors from steam compromise the ceiling over time?
not if its primed and painted properly preferably not flat plat but satin or something with a wipeable surface
Nice, but no need for the furring strips. Just take your foam board to the top of the flange and install your tile to within 1/8" from the shower tray. The thinset and 1/2" trowel with make up the depth difference.
Not a good idea when your 2 outside studs are flush with pan but the 2 center studs are back over 3/8"! You gotta shim it somehow. Even wet shimming would work, as well. But, then you gotta wait 24 hrs before tiling that wall.
@@bryanbenson6551 were the furring strips added to help make the new sistered studs plumb/level? So the board can be perfectly flush while being prepped?
That’s what I initially thought, since the strips went all the way up
no they were only to bring the goboard out past the base flange. the new studs were leveled before attaching them to the crooked existing studs
@@ohokayofficial
Love the product, but the Goboard fasteners are a PITA to locate
goboard says to have a max fastener spacing of 8"
Realizing it would be a lot of sealant, could you use sealant for the Kerdi band or valve gasket, rather than thinset.
Are we not concerned about the black (mold) on the wood studs?
Pittsburgh coal 😆
Why metal corner beads? They ALWAYS seem to rust over time.
Mostly for its rigidness, but plastic works too 👍
I’ve been thinking about switching to using go board in my bathroom remodel business, is the efficiency vs cost factor really worth it when factoring in needing the dedicated fasteners and sealants? I mean Cement board is very inexpensive, and mud, mesh tape and liquid membrane are always on hand.
I'm doing my basement bathroom now. I just carried 10 sheets of GoBoard downstairs -- 5 sheets at a time. I'm almost 60, and this is the 3rd basement I have remodeled in 30 years. I wish I had this available the last 2 times!
That’s is one factor for sure I do 2-3 bathrooms a month I’m wondering more specifically cost vs install process
Yeah. No doubt it is.
It’s about twice the price of cement board and twice as easy to work with and a lot less messy
What is the size of that shower
60” x 32” 👍
😎⚒️😎⚒️😎
How the hell is thinset going to stick to the sealant???
Can't find Go Board anywhere around here. Out of stock, no eta. Lowes has been out for many months. It's such a shit show with all these lightweight tile systems - somebody sells Kerdi Board, but not fasteners or All Set or Kerdi Fix. Or Go Board, but not sealant or niches. Really frustrating trying to piece together a full system and it's been like this for years now. /end rant
That caulking gun is too slow.
You lost me when you mixed products! If it’s not a complete system I wouldn’t use it! Schluter all the way!
Protect the shower pan before you work on it!!!
Good advice !!!
