Score Progression: Legend Road

- Two decades ago, a game in the Dance Dance Revolution series implemented a brand new timing judgement into the game, as well as one of the hardest courses ever offered in the 4-panel genre. Players around the world sought interest, and with this, pushed the course to its absolute limit as a result.

15:36 is not Blumystic btw. I have no idea how I thought it was in hindsight but shit happens lol.
I was honored to see my then WR on Soul 6 posted on this video lol (avocadorivalry)
Its JohnathanDDR
Shoutouts to Charles, Kevin, and Lizzy
The amount of research put into this video... good lord I am blown away, amazing job. I actually gasped when I saw the screenshot of NNR lmao, so many old memories.
One minor correction: The picture at 15:37 is not BlueMystic, that's another DDR player named Jonathan Warrick (also went by JonathanDDR/TubaPro1). We played DDR together in the 2003-2005 era and I believe he had the Soul 6 world record at one point in time (the picture shown).
Oh shit, I didn't realize that lmao. It came up in his Photobucket i think or somewhere else, I forget, so I figured it was just an older picture.
Much love, my guy. I've watched your stuff since I was like 9 years old lmao
Alternative title: American corn man shout outs his way to legendary status in DDR.
Ngl the crossover diagram was sick. You do a great job of explaining a scene i am foreign to, and entertaining to boot.
_Best of all, you avoid the pitfall cliches of SummingSalt clones_
Glad to be lurking since < 2k, cause you gonna be a Big Marvelous Creator no time flat. ❤️HTX❤️
He's gonna quad a youtube
super sick video, thank you for making this. i know bluemystic and i were 10 points off, and after thinking more about it, it was definitely 8023 for my record and 8033 for his. i don't know why 8067/8077 keeps sticking in my head, haha. a further testament to how absolutely ridiculous chris's scores are on this.
Omg it's the Bloodrush guy
You guys are legends to many
"Shoutouts to charles kevin and lizzy"
Yo, i wonder who Chris is gonna shout out this time
idk man i think it might be charles kevin and lizzy but i cant be sure
Acai28 :^)
I hope he shouts me out. I can step accurately with little energy
Wait isn’t your pfp from tekken
@@jesseidk1069 yes it is.
Update as of August 24, 2021:
Chris has officially MFC’d (Marvelous Full Combo) every song on Legend Road. Talk about legendary!
I am a green bean
me too bro
Greenbean 77 i wish
Thanks for making this, the nostalgia is hitting me pretty hard right now haha. The level Chris has pushed this game to is completely unreal, still always find myself checking to see what stupid scores he has put out recently. Maybe Round1 will find it's way to Iowa someday..
Duuuudddeeee, you're alive! Hope you're doing well, man.
@@coryeee LOL DOOD
Hahahaha you too man :D
@@bluemysticLS we miss you, Mike!
You probably won't read this, but you should try sometime doing a "short score progressions" video where you cover scores that have interesting but not long enough score histories to make a whole video about them. Because I can imagine that most rhythm games don't have a lot of charts with score histories that meet the criteria
It's funny because I was thinking of this exact idea today 😅 Perhaps down the line I'll craft one up if it catches my attention.
@@EtienneYT recommendations for DDR: Fefemz vs. HADES on Paranoia HADES CDP (which culminated in a world-first PFC)
DDR Extreme’s timing windows aren’t actually stricter than modern DDR, it’s just that the polling rate of the pads before DDR A were abysmal. Harder MFCs have been done, such as Prey CSP being MFC’d shortly after it’s release, and it’s an 18. For reference, PSMO is a hard 15.
who is max and why are there so many charts about him

Dude it's crazy seeing names from my past like MMX, Yasu, and JSB. These guys were legends to us back in the day.
The early parts of this video were a huge nostalgia trip, I remember checking the world record thread on AIJ back in the day and seeing scores that I just couldn't believe. I just recently started playing Stepmania again, and now DJMAX and ended up finding your channel and I love it. I hadn't played rhythm games in years and forgot how much I love them.
What a great video! I only know about the course itself so the breakdown was solid in my perspective. I never knew what the real high scores are so pretty cool to see what came in through the years. Looking forward to see more of this!
Amazing video! Bring back a lot of Memories of those days ❤
the soundtrack choices for your narration portions were *chefs kiss* 👌🏼
wow these ddr documentaries are so entertaining to watch! i got into ddr with ace so it's nice to catch up on and learn more about ddr lore :)
Chris and Kevin continue to inspire me to this day. Amazing video, Etienne, thanks for making it!!!!!! SO GREAT!!!!
Thank you very much for this video! Literally was a stroll down memory lane for me, because I remember hearing and reading about the beginning part of that race before life made me move on and forget about DDR for a while...it's pretty insane how dominant Chris was (and still is!)
Such a nice dive into history to wake up to. seeing nnr was mindblowing, I remember briefly using the site when i was really really young but not much, as I didn't have access to ddr very often. I guess that was my first experience with the american ddr community, but I thought nothing of it.
I got to meetup with ZZZ a few times at Round 1 last year, and it was super cool to see he was one of the pioneers of legend road. Awesome vid (:
Awesome video! This really brings me back.
This is so good, please do more Player analysis and Score prog, i'm addicted and have watched them all lol
These videos are gold. A piece of history in the arcade (rhythm) gaming scene.
great vid as always. thank you!
I love your videos. So well done. I hunger for more. Please sir, I want some more. ❤
Thanks for this. So awesome keep keep it up

This was an amazing video! I grew up to ddr since 2002 so this was epic to see! And yes JSB did have proof of his score. I was a witness to it and several of his amazing scores. He was the Michael Jordan of the time
Somehow this video reminds me a lot of DDRecall. These score progression videos are so wholesome.
Man is DDR Extreme my favourite DDR pack, next to XX and SuperNova. Daikenkai, Dance Dance Revolution, Kind Lady, Do it Now, Colours, Crash, I'm gonna get you, Mobo Moga and just the list goes on, the charts are so damn good and the songs are so damn catchy. By far and away my favourite DDR song of all time is Daikenkai, dang this video is good and just gave me nostalgia trip.
dont know about yall but i think chris is grateful for charles kevin and lizzy
What an marvelous video ;)
I don’t know why but these score progressions are fun to watch even if I’ve never been interested in the game. I’ve never tried to get into DDR but this video slapping. Courses are a not to weird concept since taiko has been getting them but they’re really interesting, loved to see another DDR course cover or a taiko course cover
Courses have been back for over a year. Bring back Legend Road, Konami.
holy shit Kevbo is the man who got me into ITG. Man that was so long ago!
amazing vid as always, and oh i almost forgot, shoutouts to charles, kevin and izzy.
This channel hits my bemani boomer nostalgia so hard
I'm a boomer who was playing DDR during this time and following the legend road progression at the time intensely. That MegamanX HOT SHOVEL video is so iconic. And to this day the number 7974 brings back memories
If the course was revived on A20 PLUS the record would immediately get down to 30p or so.
“Not giving anyone shoutouts cause I hate everyone actually...no I hate everybody” XDD
You're like the Fredrick Knudsen of the Rhytem game community and I love it.
I love watching ddr videos even though I’ve never played it
You have my condolences
AYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
Hah! That's a clip of my From IIDX double WR video at @19:20
The doubles courses were always a bit more of a battlefield, though it mostly felt like a lot of "Kobayan doesn't have a score for this, do the best you can"
Ayo do you still play DDR today?
@@secondoverthree I likely would if I had reliable access to a machine, but I've hardly played at all over the past few years. The halfway local cabs are either broken or privately owned, so there's little point.
as soon as I saw legend road I stopped what I was doing and watch
i remember downloading yasus videos back in like 2003-2004. when you said the first people to do it i immediately thought of yasu.
Little did we know that the "I am a LEGEND" video was a 200IQ teaser for this video... well played
pov: u wanted to comment first, but the patrons were 4 steps ahead of you

I figure that anyone who actually wants to comment first is already a patron already.
it's not my fault they built up speed for 12 hours and kept QPU aligned
@@inxphy keeping qpu alignment is easy bro
thanks for video 🙏
This is my favorite ddr game ever
shout outs to charles kevin and lizzy
I wonder if there's a good story behind the Max of Maxx (or Boss Rush Ep. IV) course from Supernova, since it always is overlooked because of Boss Rush (SN2) and Legend Road. Also would've been cool to see the doubles progression of Legend Road, but I bet records are scarce there. Great vid btw, score progression videos always show your skill as a content creator. 👏
I never understood what JBoyAAA meant when he said he cheated the crossovers to HDVO to pass the course.
@@CallMeNevermore Combo the rest of the song, then purposefully leave 3 of the hardest steps during the crossovers unstepped, aiming for the course clear.
0:18 is that critikal lmfao
yes he is
he owns a DDR machine and streamed it a few times in the past, he also uploaded a video where he played Legend of Max difficult in increasingly bizzare ways
shame i've not played a DDR game to always wanted to.
god speed to the DDR scene!
Legend Road Double-any chance of covering that? Great video and great channel!
lol i had the kevbo legend road video where he said that IM HOT JAVA line or whatever he says LOL. ive watched this probably 100 times. its quite impressive
Seeing Heather singing was trippy
Nice. Frumpty and I used to be internet friends here on CZcams. Nice to see him again. Also, great video
Dossar Player Analysis when?
I might be getting woooshed here, but jsyk the player analysis videos are commission only.
JSBlade did it at a tournament in New York in front of 100 people. There was no iPhone back then, it was simply an exhibition and he did it. Watch the video that’s posted from the tournament. Do you really think a guy that only got 9 greats in a tournament on Maxx Unlimited with no bar wouldn’t even able to pass the course? JSBs score is legit.
Jesus first fc on ttfaf and legend road both
Are you gonna do one of these on an osu map? Something like galaxy collapse maybe? I remember wubwoofwolf got #1 while drunk at one point in time.
19:28 is this from Monster Mini Golf in Warwick RI? It looks insanely familiar, used to play there a lot.
Eeeyup. Good eye. That's why I was wearing UV friendly clothes in the clip too.
This is a great video, but it feels off without having someone do the Yasu Pose or UHB Pose. Can we get a Score Progression: Score picture poses?
no way
This was a great video. Really impressive how far MegamanX and Chris Chike have taken this course. Up until early 2005, it was still impressive to pass Legend Road; these guys really pushed it to the limits. Extreme had such strict timing too. Every once in a while, I will take a peak at some of the scores people put up and I'm flawed at how much the game has progressed.
The nostalgia here is real speaking from the early days of DDR on the east coast of the US. There was a whole east coast Legend Road score "war" that wound up happening in the early days of Extreme. I believe some of the first few people to pass Legend Road on the east were White Silence and 123 Kid, which alone set the tone for the scores. Back then there were still probably less than 10-20 people in the US who had the stamina to pass Legend Road. Hard to believe now, but there were people who had top PSMO scores who still couldn't get through this course. Me and Phataxel were some of the first people on the east coast to clear LR. Me and Chris Fyre wound up playing it the most out of everyone in NYC at the time, and we would go back and forth on scores for a while, averaging between 76XX and 77XX. At around the 10:22 mark, you can see my score at 5th on the NNR leaderboard (~Sketch~). When ZZZ came out with his score, 77XX was what most of the top players were getting at the time, and to crack 7800 was just a lot for everyone's understanding of Marvelous timing back then; really impressive. I think JSB sat on his score for a while before actually posting it, and I remember him showing me the picture of his LR score way before he released any proof (he may not have, I stopped following after a while).
If I remember correctly, I think there was a lot of controversy surrounding scores coming out of Colombia around 2004 or so. I think a couple players were posting 78XX or 79XX scores with blurry pictures, and I think the community at the time just didn't believe it to be true. Probably not worth bringing up in this video as a whole, but back then it was big drama.
I think that this video also speaks volumes in terms of the quality of the earlier DDR mixes, and especially Extreme. It really has stood the test of time. If you were to boast about Extreme in 2006-2011, you just sounded like an old fart who didn't want to let go of the past. But it seems like the interest in this mix has popped back up again. Whatever recipe Konami had back then for making their DDR mixes, they were really onto something. Every mix was just better than the last. 5th mix, 6th Mix/Max, 7th Mix/Max 2, and then finally Extreme just had this... feeling.
What a time to play DDR. Great video. Thanks for making!
"Until someone had an idea..."

No mention of CX.Z's 7986 on Legend Road
Shout out Yasu ✌️
I hear DDP and shout Diamond Dallas Page....woooo. 🙃
Anyone know where I can find a crossover diagram like that omg that was so helpful
i'll be honest: there should be a different ladder with and without bar.
You can't equate the use of bar in term of difficulty.
The fact that you can offset part of your weight, as well as control and counterbalance inertia is a tremendous advantage in your ability to move your legs&feet faster
PSMO is scoobie Central
Let's go.

Was there ever a leaderboard for ITG courses? or if even anybody cared about it cause of the mods it all uses..

I didn't know a Maverick Hunter was a good ddr player
can you do score progression on max 300?
Didn't CX.Z hold the LR WR for a while?
Yes
Lol I like being good at sv and laughing at these people who never got used to it
at 2 minutes in you mention us DDR extreme isnt the same. this is because the US DDR extreme is just japanese DDR FESTIVAL. its follows the same flow where its mostly licenses. it would be the first DDR game from japan that was ment to "catch up" with us DDR mixes.
20:43 "how can you even do all of that?"
what's the ending song?
Has anyone told you that you made it into btd6 yet?
My issue with those courses is the force 1x speed mod. Would've had fun with them otherwise

What an absolute disappointment of the American version. I dont mind licenses but the fact that they had Party Collection background AND removed a hefty amount of songs was dishonoring. It shouldnt even have EXTREME in the damn title
