Heeney is very unlucky here…looked more accidental than anything. Wouldn’t be surprised to see this thrown out on appeal.
Interestingly, Libba sling tackled an opponent on the weekend with nothing said…very similar to the incident that got Harley Reid 2 weeks.

Pretty annoying comments by David King here, how does he know what Rankine's intent is. He asks why else would Rankine have done this, to get space from Starcevich for one. A player doesn't bump someone like that thinking they're going to hurt them, it's just unfortunate where he landed. Look at the size difference of the two of them.

On the Sam Powell-Pepper scale, Rankine is >4 weeks, as Rankines’ contact was intentional. I don’t believe Heeneys’ contact was intentional, it was reckless.

The afl wanted to clamp down on off the ball strikes so bad they havent suspended a single player for one this year. They cant start now after getting multiple players off for actual face punches and instead suspend heeney for something he clearly didnt mean to do. Can we talk about the umpire not paying a free against rankine too lmao He saw it happen and downplayed it, front on bump behind play and got nothing. Yet a defender spoiling the ball over the boundary is worth a free goal....

As a Lions supporter myself, I'd have to agree with that decision to award a deliberate OOB. It was in general play at an open ball, not a marking contest.
For Rankine, regardless of precedence set in other cases, he has to go for at least 2 weeks, perhaps 3. Starcevich failed the HIA and was out for the rest of the game plus will also miss next week.
Agree with you that the umpire at the time didn't even do anything and should have, but Rankine's OTB hit on Starcevich was intentional.
Up until that time, Starcevich was negating Rankine, who then saw an opportunity for a cheap-shot on an unsuspecting player.
@@darrenoleary5952 Wilmot spoiled it, marking contest or not defenders are meant to neutralize the ball. It was in a contest, he never took possession of it. You can't call deliberate on a spoil, it's not a disposal.
AFL lost its way, the head maybe sacrosanct or whatever the journos carry on about but these blokes know what they are getting themselves into. Its a physical sport and they get paid well to play it, if you dont want to risk the injuries you dont have to play it. Same with Boxing, no one forces anyone into the ring. But the payday is huge if you are good enough, if your choices in life are working in a factory or office for 50k a year but you have a skill where you can earn 10 times that but there is risk involved you do it. They are turning this sport into netball, its becoming a joke.

The fact that the head got collected accidentally is immaterial - Starc* failed concussion protocols and took no further part in the game and misses this week too. I was at the game and it was obvious Rank* was getting frustrated. Sentence 4 weeks for being so appallingly stupid.

Didn't look like much in Heeneys whack, just like a bit of a clip but connected with the nose and broke it spilling a lot of claret which made it look worse. Rankines was a lot worse with intent, Heeney 1 week because of how it looked and Rankines 2-3 weeks and starting next week all players can wear netball bibs. Take me back to the 80's as this stuff is garbage.
