100% the right move by hawthorn. I would’ve been fine with Clarkson leaving even earlier. The writing was on the wall once we starting getting rid of picks for the wingards and o’meara types.

      @shannonpincombe8485 Před měsícem +3

Yes ...Ryan Burton for Chad Wingard was the worst possible trade. Clarko was doing all he could to 'top up, to win'. And we kept losing. O'Meara was already passed his best, Mitchell has recovered from his horrific break and no longer had the tank he won the Brownlow with. Nor could he kick the ball as well any longer. Bringing in Kyle Hartigan was just embarrassing.
Sam Mitchell should've taken over the moment Clarko said he was done. No question.

Until Mitchell wins 1, 2, 3, 4 flags and makes 5 grand finals no sane person could possibly say it was 100% the right move. But Sam’s doing great so far.

@@shannonpincombe8485Ryan Burton is playing in the twos for Port and it’s easy to pick out Clarko’s misses in his final few years, perhaps only Chris Scott has had a better success rate trading players from other clubs. Clarkson acumen with trades literally won Hawthorn flags.

As a Hawthorn man, firstly 17 years is a very long time to be coaching the same club. Agree? Jeans, Kennedy Snr, Sheedy etc went on for years and years too. There's a limit right?
Jeans had an operation on his brain whilst Joyce took over. That was a sensible idea.
Around 2018 I wrote to Hawthorn to suggest that Clarko take a year to two years off. Clarko I think was exhausted after 4 cups. He needed a new big 15 out of 18 that could all play alongside each other for the next 10 years. But in terms of player age, it was all erratic.
They didn't give Clarko a break and he probably refused to take a long subatical. I think Clarko was extremely attached to certain players and perhaps put older player loyalty before the team, club and fans.
A new breed of young Hawks had to enter the picture. Clarko was slow with the transition. It just happened at Richmond and it's happening at Collingwood now.
Currently we have Gunston and Bruest as the vets that are helping the young guns. That's two vets. Under Clarko there was a hesitance to transition quickly to a new set of young stars.
I think it shouldn't have come to that. Clubs need to have a better turnover of young and aging stars along the journey I think. Clarko treated too many older players like they were Michael Tucks. Nope, Friar was a rare one.
One time my Dad shook hands with Tucky around 1976 and Dad said it was like shaking hands with something made of steel or iron. Strong tendons?
Unfortunately the process of bringing new blood into the team takes time and Clarko didn't focus on that enough.
Sam Mitchell has and really has moved things along pretty quickly in two to three years. But it should've been done much earlier by Clarko.
Hawks are about three years behind where they wanted to be. The fans expect. A good solid young team of stars should carry you through a decade. Picking the right ones is everything. Remember the 1980s under Jeans? I suggested on around 1993 that Leigh Matthews should coach Hawthorn. No one listened.
Kennedy Snr was a genius at picking the right players. In the late sixties, he picked a young Hudson, Matthews, Scott, Knights, Moore, Crimmins and so on. Super stars.
Alan Jeans did the same thing in the early eighties. Now Sam has that team of super stars now, we all agree, that they are developing rapidly.
Sam is humble and is developing into a great coach. I think he tried to do too much initially. Things are cool now.
Hawthorn and the fans couldn't accept Clarko dragging his heels on forming a new breed of young stars. It meant saying bye to his close friends like Hodgey, Burgey etc. He really struggled to do that. It seemed like he was on a working holiday. Many premiership players were shot in truth.
That dilly dally ultimately cost him his job. Ironically Clarko has a new breed of stars at North now. Go figure! On that issue, it's all worked out for everyone. Right? Right!
You guys at Fox are still milking it for what it's worth.
'Headlines'. Maybe you guys need to take a break or be replaced? How long have you been in the job? Time for a change? Lol!

You have totally missed the cause. When Hawthorn won the Grand Final in 2008.Clarkson thanked Dicker and did not mention Kennett.Next year Kennett wanted to drop Clarkson to coach Box Hill. He was stopped by Dunstall.

Okay, now wait a minute? So Clarkson, simply for sentimental reasons/loyalty, waged war against his bosses to give Burg an extra contract to guarantee he gets his 400 games. Clarkson did this at the risk (which came to fruition) of his coaching career at the football club. Then a couple of years later, he is accused of systemic abuse of same group of players? I am confused here.

I don't think we should pay all that money for Battle. I'd rather go to the draft and manage with Frosty for now

i'm loving what Frosty is doing this year. I'm happy to get Battle but I'm not sure about Barrass. Sicily moving forward means we lose his penetrating kick off half back. So who gets dropped for Battle and Barrass - Frosty and ??? Sicily goes forward for Gunston who is in ripping form again - and we've gotta squeeze Mitch Lewis back in. Nice problems to have I guess.

Surely Battle won’t be getting $900+ next year. Solid player who seems to have the potential to be a very good player but his performances to date certainly don’t justify that size of a pay check.
Maybe he would just be the beneficiary of circumstance where one club has heaps of room in its cap and the offer is driven up further by the Saints who know this and believe he wants to leave regardless…
