- "Hillbilly Elegy" has been one of the most popular movies on Netflix in recent weeks, but critics have tossed almost nothing but hatchets, creating what director Ron Howard called "the biggest differential" he's ever had "between critical consensus and audience approval ratings." Award-winning actress Amy Adams, who plays Beverly Vance in the film, talked with "CBS This Morning" co-host Tony Dokoupil about this gap and why the movie resonates with viewers.
Critics are a bunch of out of touch elites
If you doubt the bias of our leftist media, read the critics' reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. They can't stand that it doesn't support the "victim" mentality and that he (gasp) pulled himself up by his bootstraps to attend Yale Law School and become a successful writer.
I completely agree with your statement. You should be more conscious that poor white people can't be victims : this status is reserved to some other categories. Looks like it's intolerable for these so-called "elites", that poor ppl from rural KY or WV integrate an Ivy League university...
Because left America thinks these are the folks that put Trump in office, therefore they have to make it fit the "Orange Man Bad" narrative. If they only knew how many of their own friends voted for Trump. But let's keep pretending.
@first last Kind of yea, and I'm sure at someone's upcoming interview, they'll be asked "who did you vote for in 2020"? Just like the guy that was asked what he did to help wipe out systemic racism in his tech interview. So weak.
No... they are not out of touch. They are racist!!!
If this same story would be set in south side Chicago, with a black cast. Critics would have this at 100%.
White people CAN'T face hardship.... didn't you hear?
Let's not bring up color, because if black people were to say the same thing we are pulling the "RACE CARD" I'm just saying.
@lilmil in this case it is. If people dont like the movie then that's their opinion. What does them being white have to do with it
@lilmil Try not to get so triggered, Marry.
@Mac-Attack none of them are recent or exist in this current climate.
I loved the movie I don’t understand all the criticism ...
@bla bla What doesn't?
Great acting.
It’s an anti-white racist response.
White working class poverty is an issue Hollywood elites dont want addressed
@@MsChitterchat no call it what it is, it’s a racist response plain and simple
The audience approved the film and that's what really matters
F the "critics"
I am from Appalachia, they finally got one right! The accents were so good!
@@alexjohnson606 The film received 85% positivity amongst audiences, it was pretty well liked.
@@alexjohnson606 don’t talk behalf everybody dude
kvothe....I know!!Nuff said.
@@mattchoman9737 more like Alex jones.
Isn't this just an indictment that "critics" are out of touch? I've almost never agreed with their ratings and reviews.
I didn’t realize how incredibly articulate Amy Adams is. She is a fabulous actor and I can’t wait to see the film. Thanks for the interview; she’s on my radar to follow now.
she struggled for about a decade before getting big, so hers was a road of just talent, effort, more talent, more effort and hard work. no casting couch, no fancy relatives, no reality shows. so she has earn every bit of her career.
@Charles Goodwin I watched it last night. Her portrayal of an addict was compelling. The ensemble of actors is great. I wonder how much the actors learned from each other to pull this off. And of course what it was like to work with Ron Howard. And yes, tears were shed on this one.
Jones. love her.She gets the best roles.
@@Digmer a role model and whitout scandals very weird case
I though it was a great film with very deep roots. All of the actors did an amazing job bringing the family to life on the screen. I fell in love with the whole family.
I suppose they shouldn't have released this within 6 months of an election. After all, the law stops if it's a Republican.
Me too.
Incredible performance. This is JD Vance’s memoir; and yes, having a mother and a birth father, one from Lexington, Ky and one from the Appalachia hills of Irvine, Ky, there was a striking similarity of the differences between country and the city folk. They both escaped a different kind of physical and emotional poverty to create a better life.
None of us “ordinary” people agree with the critics, they are out of touch.
Critics are generally worthless and out of touch with the poor and middle class in this cocountr More of the same elevated elitism that is ruining this country.
The media had to throw in the "Racial" word!!! That had to be "trendy" for the times??? I'm guessing?
Agree
I don't get it either....I loved the movie and I ended up ordering his book.
It's a great book. I read it a few years ago and it was eye opening.
Just saw the film and F the critics.
How dare we make movies that show individual could possibly improve themselves even if everything around them is against it. Oh i forgot only the government can make anything better in life.
😆
This was an outstanding movie with outstanding performances from the actors; but in the current political environment, the media were too cowardly to give it the credit that was due.
Amy Adams is always a great actress and Ron Howard is a great director. That said, J.D. Vance is a proven liar and I would love to see an expose about this novel. He is NOT a hillbilly and he does NOT represent the common man.
Yet Cuties has an 87...
bruh
Hey, you can’t blame leftists for having a special kind of love for the kiddies.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@esteban3155 Don’t politicize everything.
You know what that tells us the critics hated this and liked cuties
@@Honeycoupe unfortunately, our culture has been almost fully politicized, and it started with democrat politicians and their elite supporters. Now we have no choice but to have this conversation culturally.
We pass on the traumas of our ancestors and how do we break that cycle; that is the real question. Powerful. A lifetime challenge, yet opportunity. Enjoyed the movie because it is about culture and it is about one mans escape, and conflict between the love for family and the desire to experience his own happiness.
Just commenting - ! saw some PTSD in the story.
She was fantastic in this movie.
FYI. The word hillbilly originated in Detroit, MI.
Thank you
What year?
SHE'S PERFECT...GENERATIONAL TRAUMA....SO TRUE
She has nothing to worry about, people totally loved the movie and her acting.
I enjoyed this movie. And will watch it again.
Alicia Gilbert a watch or a couple of times love it
Love the movie I am a amy adams fan don’t listen to the critics watch it and judge yourself
This film was raw and touched close to many family stories. But not without leaving the audience with a spark of hope at the end.
It's only a film to criticize if the 'melodrama' of addiction and cycle of dysfunction hasn't touched your life and family in any degree.
“It’s not a contest of Suffering...” I liked that quite, forgive me for not knowing the name of the gentleman who said that
She’s a beautiful person inside and out. The movie was hard to watch but her acting was amazing.
It's not a contest of suffering. He put that very well
"I relate so much to the story"
*interviewer - " oh did you struggle with poverty or addiction?"
Amy - "no, I had self doubt. I had a hard time deciding if I wanted to voice my opinion."
Oh, you're right. That's the same thing.
She did an amazing job, but don't pretend you grew up like this if you didn't.
“What does identity politics mean?” Said someone.
“Read theshellest comment”, said I.
Sorry.
I’m a man and I cried for this movie.
She was amazing in this fabulous and relatable film. 💕
Loved the movie, I don't care what critics say. Keep making these movie, please.
This movie was liked by my husband and I,we cried a lot.It should hit home with folks one way or another.
Be careful Amy. They will blacklist you also. No one is safe. Brilliant performance. Be you
I don't need to watch it, I used to live in Kentucky.
She should have play Tonya Harding in, I Tonya
She is SOOOOO beautiful.
Fantastic book and movie. This story needed to be told. It really stuck with me. Tragic and beautiful at the same time.
This movie brought back a lot of memories. Glenn close reminded me of my grandmother. Movie was good 👍🏼
I liked Hillbilly Elegy. It was interesting. I got this family.
Amy Adams is a very beautiful & talented actress.
If their agenda in giving a bad review was to make people not want to watch it, it is having the opposite effect on me. I want to see this movie all the more. And, if I like it, I WILL buy the DVD.
I heard she did a fabulous job and this is the only thing from Hollyweird I will seek and watch.
A really good movie. Excellent cast. Very helpful, if struggling with mental illness or family problems. Thanks for making this movie.
Sometimes the moral of the story is make better decisions. Poor decisions lead to bad results. Good decisions lead to good results.
Gail King: I know that the reviews are basically a politicized hatchet job but I'm glad they have a good attitude about my colleagues trashing their art
Most critics nobody has ever heard of...hence they are expendable...just one unknown persons opinion at best! A difficult subject matter for sure, but it represents a true experience...wonderfully produced and directed with a tremendous cast! The two lead actresses once again put in perfect, outstanding performances. This is the kind of film that used to be more appreciated by critics who knew how to understand the value of all the production elements...they seem to have vanished!
Loved the movie. The story spoke to me, coming from a poor family with many of the same issues. I don't know what the critics are smoking but the public has spoken.
Good rhyme
This movie is incredibly good. Had me all in my feelings. We are all so much alike.
Fist, this movie was absolutely sensational! Second, Amy and the rest of the cast are off the charts phenomenal!
I love it I had the same life almost I had young parents
I loved the book before watching the film. Amy Adams did an outstanding job as did the rest of the people attached to this project. I loved it.
Just watching this makes me want to cry. I grew up in Cincinnati...lots of memories. I read the book and was enthralled. Simply blown away.
Amy, I love you so much. You the person you are. That’s who I love. I’ll continue following your growth. I’m excited to see everything you do.
Shockingly good insight from these anchors
Everyone can agree Arrival was a great film though!
Yeah, when critics praise a film you don't see people complaining about how we shouldn't listen to critics.
Funny that
Momo Nope, I thought it was boring.
@@rodycaz8984 ok sorry
@@Momo-po5tn Amy Adams is my favorite actress though.
“It’s not a contest of suffering” - wise words.
Thank you CBS for your final point
Amy and Glen both killed it in this movie. These same critics praise the same ol regurgitated, super hero movie and both hate a great, real like film. Critics suck. They’ve always have.
She seems very genuine. Pretty.
I love how people are saying how this is a bad representation of Appalachians but this is a memoir about HIS LIFE STORY. Which means that everything that happened in the movie happened in real life. It’s not like this is a fictional story.
Maybe it’s because he’s not actually an Appalachian hillbilly but claims to be. His book is a memoir but the way he generalizes and criticizes the region and culture is offensive. And he also claims to be a spokesperson for our region which is laughable considering that Appalachia doesn’t claim him. You should check out all of the incredible books written by people from the region in response to his book.
Never even heard of this movie I got to check it out looks like you can be pretty good and the actress looks beautiful🤔
It just came out. On Netflix
Never heard of it either, until the “critics” didn’t like it.
Funny how that works. I haven’t seen it cus I don’t have Netflix, but if it made some angry then it must be great.
It is a good movie, IMO.
She was great in “The Boxer,” I believe, as well.
@@mybrotherkeeper1484 I'm definitely going to look for it🤔
@@journeymansmitty8283 it’s a true story about boxer, Micky Ward. She was feisty in the movie, piquing my interest. New England accent, and all
Lots of things in Hollywood far worse than Hillbillys .
Steve Kelly I was so touched by Mawmaw who stated during the the funeral procession, "We hill folk take care of our own"! It takes a village, and it works.
CBS was fair regarding this movie and the criticism of it. No cuentes esto contra ellos.....
one of the most realistic portrayals of my world and best dramas ive seen in quite awhile
She did a great job!
And under the new Oscar rules, this film cannot qualify for an award. What a world we live in.
Amy Adams was brilliant. She became Bev. it was agut wrenching Oscar-worthy performance. It is JD's story, byt Amy portrayed Nev's character with so much conviction. She is a method actor like Christian Bale or Ed Norton. i was left drained after watching the movie! what a story!
the movie was so good. i cried way too many times watching this.
Was just eyeing this book a year ago because of its praise.
I love the film. reminds me so much of my upbringing being born in ohio , raised in Logan, wv and now in Nashville. His childhood was very similar to mine and my maternal grandparents helped raise me and my grandmother that passed june 20,2005 of cancer was my world that was so much like his grandmother. The poverty and the childhood. the fights. It was odd watching it but amazing film, the cast and Ron Howard did amazing
I just saw this movie and it was heartbreaking. Great acting and very real. Hits close to home. Amy was great in this movie
Such an articulate actress. She did amazing in this amazing movie.
Who cares what critics think?
Just proves critics don't know the difference between Chicken Salad and Chicken Sh*t.
my rating on imdb is 8/10; i loved it when i saw the credits and saw the real pictures and true story, so i added another point :)
Book is wonderful. The movie is superb. The cast and the authenticity that everyone brings to the roles of JD Vance's family story is very relatable. You don't have to be ignorant just because you're born in poverty and I know I'm an example of that. Very story. It is disgusting that we live in a world where voices must be silenced if they're not in the popular trend of the month. I believe that as the reporter states you can root for people from all different walks of life to overcome challenges of addiction, poverty, and set goals and dreams to accomplish in life no matter the race, no matter the circumstance..... Not everything is black and white and not everything is one-sided. I would challenge anyone who has had their own family trauma to read this and and watch this film and not feel something! I think you'll feel a connection and I think you'll feel inspired and you laugh and you'll cry and you'll really see that so many people can have pain from all walks of life. You'll see that even against all the odds, sometimes with a little bit of hope and luck and blessings and hard work, a person can overcome and make a better life for themselves and their family. You can be better and do better and no better and still feel connection with the place that you come from. And you don't have to be ashamed. You don't have to carry the shame of trauma with you. And you don't have to apologize for not being the flavor of the month for the latest media sensationalism.
Rotten tomatoes - the name fits them well
I loved loved this movie!🥰plus I love all her movies!
2:58 There is one impostor among us
There is nothing negative about this movie. The only people complaining aren’t real Americans.
0:50 tf? the dude is social distancing from a laptop?
Loved this movie and loved how she played her role.
What a brilliant actress, can't wait to watch.
There was a black equivalent to this that came out in 92. It was called South Central.
Since the Critics don't financially support movies but the audience does, what the critics have to say when they dislike a film but the audience loves, is of no importance.
I really did enjoy it! There are MANY people who live at [or below] the poverty level. People are ALL flawed--the stigma of being poor only complicates issues, lack of proper education, lack of nutritious food, and . . . as hard as people try; the STIGMA of being poor just beats you down!! The whole town knows it, and shuns appropriately! The life and times of a poor nuclear family CAN rub people the wrong way--just as it is in REAL life!!
Who would ever criticize this movie? What a brilliant brilliant brilliant movie and acting
Congratulations Senator Vance!
Awesome movie!!!
I don't get the critics on this one. Beautiful movie.
Who cares what critics think? who gave them such power in the first place?
Best movie of the year.
Loved the movie!
Why do they ask actors and actresses these stupid questions? They get the role and they're happy they got it. They do the best they can reading the script and following the director's advise. They have no input as to how it's filmed, shot or edited. If it works out, it's great. If it fails who do we blame? This film must have ended shooting half a year ago or more. Now that there's a controversy she has to come up with something. Make up your own mind.
Love Amy Adams, such a great actress. Haven't seen the movie yet but definitely going to check it out. Just from the clips her performance looks amazing :)
I love Amy,and I wish her a very very happy birthday 🎉
your performs are excellent.
Critics are people that get paid for an OPINION. I'm picky about movies and actors performances. It was a good movie and she did a great job.
Don't listen to the critics! It's an amazing movie.
Very moving story and a well crafted picture .
Critics leak their political views in. Wrong.
Thought the movie was great 🤷🏽
I don’t understand what’s so controversial about this film!
