  • As Glenn Close’s Mamaw claims in the trailer for Hillbilly Elegy, “Everyone in this world is one of three kinds: Good Terminator, a Bad Terminator, and Neutral.” If that’s the case, then we can definitely say that the Hair, Makeup, and Costuming Departments of Ron Howard’s new drama are Good Terminators, at least in terms of their exemplary work transforming Close and Amy Adams into the small-town Ohio women at the heart of author J.D. Vance’s memoir. The A.V. Club couldn’t pass up the chance to talk to the two legendary performers and learn about the work that went in their new appearances; as we learned, Glenn Close was able to walk around set unrecognized by some, and Amy Adams felt very comfortable in hair that reminded her of her own locks at Homecoming “circa 1989.” As Close’s Instagram-famous pup Pip dozed off in the background, we also spoke with the actors about their time in Middletown, OH, and how returning to Hillbilly Elegy’s roots inspired their performances.

Absolutely brilliant! It is so relatable where I come from. Both the film and stellar cast deserve to be recognised. Well done!

Glenn and Amy were perfectly cast for those roles.

When clips from old home movies withthe real Mamaw were shown, I thought it was something the film crew had shot with Glenn Close in full costume. That's how much Close's costume and make-up looked like the actual person to me. Amy Adams was a teen during the 1990s, so she could pull off the look too. After seeing his actual mother, I was impressed by how much she looked like his mother did back then.

Even the kid and the principal actor looked like the real protagonist of the story. That casting was just blessed.

VERY good book to read even though you want to slap his mother at times. For some reason this film on Netflix will not let you stop watching and then go back to where you left off. Not that on most films. Very hard to watch this film v/depressing but uplifting at times. GREAT performances of the main stars who so project the real people.

Cruela Deville and Mawma are the most polar opposite characters one actor has played

Both give remarkable and very brave performances. Adams makes Bev so much more than just a screaming bipolar harpie, showing all the sides and contradictions of her personality. Like most Ron Howard movies, it's a solid professional piece of work, not on the level of a CITIZEN KANE, but above average with excellent acting. The snotty coastal critics who politicized this utterly non-political story should be ashamed of themselves. HILLBILLY ELEGY is tough yet compassionate, empathetic without getting too sentimental, and demonstrates the important lesson that having a bad childhood doesn't mean you're condemned to have a bad life.
The critics would have called it the greatest film of the decade if the characters had been portrayed as President Obama labeled them. Referring to working-class voters in old industrial towns decimated by job losses, Obama said: "They get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations." Show them like that, oppressing saintly people of color, and Hollywood would shower the film with Oscars.

The film was true. I felt so much during the whole journey. And I really don't understand how someone can get a political message off of this work. Like, there is NO POLITICS whatsoever. It's just a true story portrayed to its best imo.

So non-political! I agree! I think some people have to interject their complaint of choice into everything in front of them.
