  • Quick review of a new analog joystick in the arcade form factor. I need to put more time on this joystick to see how long it lasts, but first impression it is worth the $8.79 price. I tested it with a Brook Wireless Fighting Board

    Hi! Thanks so much for your review. I've been having a hard time trying to find an analog stick in a fighting stick form factor, and I managed to find one of these for around the same price if not a little higher than you described on Amazon. Much of what you mentioned is included with mine, except that they significantly greased the bottom of the shaft and inside the craters of the bearings so that they wouldn't stick or grind away. The way it's made reminds me of old 3rd party N64 controllers, probrably a good example is SuperAct or InterAct, whose potentiometers are large enough to fit in those large controllers. It should also be possible to install tighter springs on each end of the bearings to improve the snap back to center.
    It's nice that the leads of the poteniometers are already wired up, but it is indeed confusing where they're supposed to connect aside from a Brook Wireless board with different connectors. I'm stuck deciding if I want to dedicate it for a Brook Wireless or try a custom PCB solution that can immediately accept the SJ@JX's connections, but it's tough finding documentation on this, nevermind the item.
    The only other analog joysticks in that form factor that I've heard of are Hall Effect sensing magnometer sticks from Sanwa (the JLM instead of the JLF), and a custom-made one behind the scenes for a Smash Bros stick, both of which I don't believe have seen the light of day. It's a shame because there's too much demand from the fighting game community for digital keypads instead of upgrading from switches to poteniometers, but immediate response is a priority over full range.

      These actually sell as a kit on Amazon that does include the encoder that accepts the existing connectors.

      If I were doing it again, I would make an adapter cable that goes from the Brook board to the connector that comes with the SJ@JX. That way you could keep the connector intact and unplug it anytime.

    On the link it has thumbsticks for $8, and the arcade sticks for $20. Did they send the arcade stick anyways or have they upped the prices?

      I checked the receipts and the last time I bought these joysticks was Dec 18, 2022 and they were $8.64. Looks like the prices went up.

    I do think they have potential, my only grip is the snap to center is just too light feeling. I'm actually trying to find better tension springs to see if they'll be better.

    • @enabled5714
      @enabled5714  Před rokem +2

      I agree, they are pretty light (which I actually prefer but that's personal preference). I am also searching for stronger tension springs so if you find some, let me know! I can tell you the OEM wire diameter is .015", the loop to loop length is .515", the coil OD is .135" and the spring rate is approximately 4-4.5 lbs/in

      I measured one of the potentiometers and it looks like they are 5K.

    Hello. Thank you so much for this review. I have been trying to find an analog stick for smash bros and this seems like it will do the trick. If I could ask a question, How does the stick feel to play with during gaming? Does it feel responsive? I see people have found a solution to the snap to center issue using some grease, after fixing that do you feel these are good sticks to use? (I ordered one from aliexpress but it will take quite a while before it gets here lol)

      Hi! I don't have my controller set up yet (slowly working on it) so I haven't played any games with this joystick. However, I was able to fix the joystick sticking by removing the plate and loosening the 4 screws underneath. I have played with these sticks doing bench testing on other things and they seem to respond ok. I'm curious how long they will last.

      @@letsgobubblegum Good deal! Yes, please share your thoughts as you put some time on it and I will do the same. If it doesn't work out, at least it wasn't crazy expensive.

    hi do you think this analog joystick would work in mame with games like hang on, outrun and arkanoid (by which i mean would the joystick work in the way that, in playing Hang-On for example, you could push gently left or right to get the bike to lean a bit, whereas pushing fully left or right will action the full turn of the bike). and also do u know if it's possible to connect the joystick via usb?

    • @enabled5714
      @enabled5714  Před 6 měsíci +1

      I don't know enough about mame to provide a definitive answer, but my uneducated answer is no, this joystick will not work in the manner you want to use it. This joystick does not/cannot connect via USB without help from an Arduino or something similar. You might take a look at the Ultrastik 360 which does connect via USB and can be programmed to operate in different configurations using the mapping software provided by Ultimarc. It's more expensive, but may be the closest out of the box solution to what you are trying to do.

      You need a zero delay usb encoder board and yeah you can use that on pc

    You can fix the stick by taking 4 screws on top off and thear is 4 more screws under that loosen them up add alittle grease and works great

      Yep, I took one apart to see if I could figure out the problem and exactly what you said, loosen the screws a little and it works great!
