you know what would be cool? doing something like this for a fantasy console like Pico-8
If you JUST wanted to do something for the Pico-8 you could prob just use a rpi of some sort with a cart port.
@@JessicaFEREMYeah, that's effectively what he just suggested. Pico-8 is just an emulation spec, sure some "dedicated" hardware exists, but that's not how you're intended to "use" Pico-8.
Pico-8 suxx dixx. -FOSS Gang
I was just thinking this, like the reverse of FPGA emulators
@@gamagama69Honestly an arm-based (or really using any 8/16-bit microcontroller) Pico-8 "game player" system that doesn't run a full OS would be pretty cool. --- That would still be sort of halfway there, because Pico-8 is a /fantasy console/ so any software implementation thereof is essentially a sort of 'virtual machine' (VM) that interprets an instruction set.
We got Pico-8 content in the hopper, don't you worry.
Abe: How many stock footage should i use for the video?
Abe: Yes!
:) it started as a meme, but now it's an addiction :(
It's like a glorious cross between a PC Engine and an Amstrad GX.
And a TurboGrafx 16 technically
@@Bush_Dog777so… pc engine.
@@LambdaMiscellaneous yes I know, but the American version
@@Bush_Dog777 But it's... the same thing.
@@LambdaMiscellaneous almost, the TG-16 is more like a rectangle, as the PC Engine is more squared, and the TG-16 has some stuff different from the PC Engine, I just can't remember it
now make a cartridge for super auto pets for the gameboy
Yes!
To give you some product designer insight to make it feel more like a retail item, think about the end user and marketing. Little things like the sticker on the game should be flipped so it’s properly viewed when inserted. This would have been something that would have been done so product photos showed off a game as well.
This comment gave me the idea to design a box for it
@@Noahvocatdid you do it
For the Plastic for the Console and Cartridges I recommend Resin Casting. It will give you a plastic feel closer to what you want. Robert Tolone, Brick in the Yard, and Crafsman Steady Craftin for tutorials. Also Plastic Geek is great person to ask for advice.
This was art
Man I’m just so impressed by the production quality and generally content, that’s crazy for such a recent channel. Keep going this is really top quality content ❤️
Thank you my friend! I try to put a lot of effort into my videos so comments like your keep me motivated!
@@abetoday you sound a lot like code bullet i get the same kind of vibes from your videos definetly got a new sub here if you ever plan to make and sell these am buying one
For real and for the ports on the front I would split them into 4, make 1 an IR Sensor, leave 2 as usb for mouse and keyboard and make one port have an optional adapter for old games that's modular
Ikr, if he directs, films and edits them himself that's freaking amazing. It kinda inspires me to give youtube one more shot, I've made a few channels in the past but eventually given up as the amount of effort put in to directing, filming and editing was too much for me and no family member was able to help me even if they wanted to. But I'm going to give it another shot I think.
I got this video recommended, and I was not expecting it to be as high quality as it was. Can't wait to see what else you cook up! And keep up the good work 👊
Thank you!! Really appreciate the kind words!
Same! Keep it up!
00:10 They were simple and comfortable to the touch.
Today, everything is so complicated and out of touch with what we need... What we truly want.
I completely agree with this sentiment.
I like how you brought back the TurboGrfx / PCEngine design vibe, I had one of those and it was amazing.
lovely project! i really like how cute the cartridges look and how they autorun when inserted, makes it really polished
Man this editing is amazing
The case design looks very inspired by the PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16, maybe with a bit of a Sega Mark III in the mix.
Amazing build! Can’t wait to try it. I reckon the two ports on the front could be great for peripherals - a VCR style player for movies, a slide projector for photos etc. Looking forward to seeing what you do next!
If the frame was reworked a little, the ports on the front could be reworked that lead to a new controller input. USB is cool, but that feeling of weird controller inputs was really mysterious and nostalgic for me. The S-Video input looking ones especially got to me, because it looked so complicated.
Could just use a standard 9 pin connector like Atari, Sega, and most 80s PCs to keep it semi standard
this is amazing. you should make the cartridge labels flipped so they are seen the right way up when plugged in
It reminds me of the PC Engine Console
i think the simplest and most obvious thing to add would be a couple usb ports, which doesnt entirely fit the retro vibe but it does open a lot of possibilities for other controllers, since theres usb adapters and remakes for basically every controller and controller adjacent device you can think of
I designed my own game console also. Tha was a 2 yr long journey and i loved doing it. Spent a lot but learned and enjoyed a LOT. So cool to see someone else doing the same. Mine was a portable 3D printed arcade, but i am in love with your console. Congrats for the results and thanks for sharing this video !
please let this banger of a video go viral so the sexy sexy Abe can do this shit full-time and just bless us with these awesome videos!
Turbografx Vibes
That looks cool. I went the 3.5" floppy route on one of my consoles but your cartridge idea is so clever.
Glad I found you, you’ve inspired me to do more projects!
That’s fantastic :)
This is amazing content, superb work! Can't wait to see your channel continue to grow!
Thank you so much!!!
Thank you so much! The cart design is exactly what I've been wanting to design for the longest time. You nailed it!
What if, you added something like the gamecube did, modular devices for what you wish to do at that current time, say want to watch a movie? You just insert the IR module
Play normal games? module for keyboard and mouse
Play retro? Make a module!
It seems like itll work
This is great! Love me some cool little hardware projects :)
Looks wicked, and that noise as the cartridge slots in 👌🏼
I like the way this video was made. The goofiness is a plus. You earned a sub
Great content! Well done. Love the design
This is cool and inspiring. I love the way it looks. My one qualm is the exposed pins on the cartridge. I'm making a retro game and would love to make a cartridge for your custom console!
Instantly Subscribed, I just discovered your channel while browsing videos for the 32blit and Pimoroni Pico System.
I couldn’t ignore the video on my home feed, doing a triple take, and I’m glad I watched. I definitely wasn’t expecting this to be the third video posted
This is so stellar. Great job!
very cool project, tho i must admit that the framework board used is massively overkill and would hardly be seen as "obsolete hardware"
it’s sponsored content
true, but its really cool to see that these components can have a useful second life unlike most things manufactured these days
You could also use it as a pc though.
You made this look so much easier than I know it was
I love how this turned out! Lots of clever design choices throughout.
Thank you! I appreciate that thanks for watching!
This reminds me of the old atari consoles, especially the lynx with those unusual cartridges, what a cool idea!
it's so beautiful! I've looked at this for five hours now.
Amazing video! I would love something like this, and I'm amazed by your ability to make stuff happen. Would be incredibly interested in learning to do this type of thing.
I need more of this!
production quality is crazy good keep it up
this video and the build are exquisite
Something that was always fascinating to me were the "data crystals" in Stargate & Stargate Atlantis.
Also these scifi crystal interfaces where you put a crystal on a surface and it all lights up around it and turning the crystal controls the interface etc..
That or all the very chonky precision machined expensive looking storage devices of cassette futurism (as opposed to real life cheap plasticy consumer electronics). Where you like plug it in with a complex locking mechanism and many intricate moving parts and a satisfying noise.
Like how R2-D2 interfaces with spaceships in the prequels but as a USB stick. Or where you need to grab a handle with your hand and turn it 180° to unlock a giant "data canister". Like something out of a 80s/90s scifi anime.
This is great keep up the good work 👍
Awesome video! This channel has great potential to blow up. Keep up the great work!
Amazing work
Man it was my first time checking out a video on your channel that I discovered from yt shorts, and although I'm not much into retro consoles built but the production quality and your content was soo awesome to just not appreciate your channel.... Keep up such great vibes and you will be one of the top creators one day
Thank you so much!!! It means a lot to hear that!
love the channel, cant wait for you to blow up!! Road to 100K!
thank you friend!
I've been thinking about doing something like this for a while. Glad to see someone jumped on it already
this has better production and editing than channels with millions of subs keep it going man
Thank you so much! I’ll try!
Fantastic job ! I love this retro console ! 😍😍
What would be cool is if you made a more complex menu interface (similar to the ps3 xmb) with customizable settings and stuff
its possible with Retroarch.. it would probably take a bit of an effort to make it run a game as soon as the card's plugged in tho. not impossible, but certainly doable
USB in the front so it can support any USB controller, or USB-converted controller.
Just recently I bought some NES and SNES controllers that work by USB, so my Emulation feeling is all the more authentic.
The production quality is amazing on this video, and the final project is awesome!
I can't believe you designed that entire thing with Tinkercad, it really shows that the tool doesn't matter.
Thank you!!! Glad you enjoyed!
At first, I thought this video was pure clickbait, but you using Framework Laptop 13 parts reminded me: I had dreamt of making something similar, but rather than make a late '80s console, I wanted to make a mid '90s laptop.
Super cool, makes me want to build one!!
Subscribed for the electronics. Stayed for the editing.
honestly the best part is the cartridge and the mechanisim to read them
for ages i wished for an storage like this, i imagine saving my art and projects on a cartridge like this and could put it onto other devices through that cartridge
Wonderful project! I'd love to see you make some controller for it similar to the old ones with a full keypad on it!
Wow! Just found this channel, this was Amazing! ❤
The more I see kickass Framework projects, make me think they should make a modular Console.
we need more of this content
This video actually hits home with me in a way not many videos do. When I was a teenager around 2001, a friend and I spent some time to create a game console that used floppy disks as its storage medium. At it's heart of course, it was torn down laptop motherboard trimmed and repurposed into a somewhat generic looking beige chassis and a custom OS written in C and some assembler that allowed for some low level graphics calls and stuff. It was affectionately dubbed the Fdrive. We wanted to make actual cartridges for it but we were definitely butting heads against the limitations of the time as teenagers in a world where parts were not so readily accessible.
Great job man, I want to do this now
Congrats, you must be very dedicated, seems like a lot of work.
Very, very cool project.
This has all the vibes of an SNES dev console
The LED ground control was amazing.
this is amazing and i always wanted to do something like this for emulation
Great project! The console really needs a shiny logo sticker on it like the C64 rainbow or ZX spectrum
Looks so retro! I love it! You should put adapters in the ports
Nintendo's gonna love having you working with them
I love how it resembles a Turbografx-16.
Yes! I originally mentioned this in the video, but it got cut for pacing. Turbografx-16 was huge inspiration!
@abetoday That's so cool! love the build, It kinda is inspiring me to one day make a console of my own.
pro tip: use uv light to age the plastic faster!
Love the video!
you should def make matching custom controllers for the front ports.
Glad this got recced for me! Very interesting build, I feel like it has a lot of potential!
Also, definitely would want at least one of the USB ports to have controller support/detection~
I already have old controllers with adapters for my PC in general.
I feel like the cartridge needs a lip on the end so it's easier to get it out of the console, also!
Not sure if you're still working on this, but I guess I'll go digging to see if you have. Watching development on a lil console seems really intruiging~
Dude, this is incredible! I want one like this, but for Steam games. The homemade cartridges are chef's kiss.
Thanks for the kind words! I’m sure you could build your own if you set your mind to it
@@abetoday Is it possible to use PS2 memory cards as game cartridges? I'd like to see someone attempt that. Your video shows that creating carts can be done.
Yo this channel is a sleeper, predicting subs to spike up soon, great stuff.
This is awesome.
ive been wanting to dot his for years but never had the money, so seeing something someone else do this is really cool (:
Would be dope if you designed your own controller aswell!! And use the ports for it c:
okay i don't know if your gonna release that or no because i didnt really understood the video very well, but i really want this to be out, i just can't wait to make a game for this console
Incredible.
I would love to follow a build or tutorial of this to learn. I absolutely love this.
this is just the phineas and ferb episode with max motem
"were not trying to make you a celebrity were trying to make you a has-been"
Absolutely brilliant.
Use the front ports with classic controller adapters.
been waiting on this one
Can we get a part 2 on this going into more detail?
Getting people to watch two videos on one subject is challenging so making part 2 stand-alone might be necessary (if a bit difficult) but I sure would appreciate it
I'm probably going to do a full video just about cartridges (I've improved the drive significantly since releasing this) and go into detail about the software and everything for that. This whole build probably wont see more videos, but you never know!
That's pretty rad
I love the airplane bit so much
Really putting "PC" into "PC Engine" here. Nice work!
this is so amazing
heres a lesson for every one just because something is old doesnt mean its bad
thanks random youtube guy, would love to see more creations from you!
Man, youtube reccomendations are getting better and better. Amazing content bro
Another banger Abe. Could you potentially just keep swapping framework MOBOs every time you get a new one?
Not the guy you asked, but probably… but why? Why would you want to?
I'm a little envious. Ever since getting fed up with collecting, I've sort of dreamed about having a custom console that I could curate a 16-bit library for. Of course buying dozens or hundreds of SD cards and making homemade cartridges would still get prohibitively expensive, but still I dream.
