"best you can hope for is to die in your sleep, and somewhere in the Darkness The Gambler he broke Even"
RIP Kenny Rodgers đ
I think it's beautiful that that's how he went. It's sad, but pure poetic justice and I'm glad he didn't suffer.
Man suffered alot in his life. A whole shitload.
@@Tommy1977777 the real trick is to keep oneself grounded through all the crap in life, and he did that in Aces.
Last name Rogers not Rodgers. Sorry had to say it Wizardpandora lol
@@shannonmondella5074 autocorrect is evil at times
He was one of greatest story tellers in the genre.
I agree, Kenny Rogers and Johnny Cash, two of the Greatest Of All Time.
DLB Dirty Little Bastard Donât forget about Marty Robbins
Him and Red Sovine
Chris christopherson is pretty good also
Any genre IMO. I got the Coward of County MOVIE on DVD. Damn most underrated song of alllllllll time
Coward of the county by Kenny Rogers is my favorite song by him RIP to a legend
This song was so big that they made 3 movies based on it and Kenny played the Gambler in all three. Also check out Islands in the stream by Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton.
Island and the Stream is a good song there was that rap song that copied the song a bit called Ghetto Superstar from the late 90's
How about the Movie Six Pack it was one of my childhood favorites
Actually I'm pretty sure they made five movies about the gambler 4 TV
I remember watching those movies, I'm from South America, and even here he was known
How are the movies called?
RIP KENNY ROGERS...
"The gambler broke even" R.I.P Kenny Rogers, the song is so fitting right now. I think I was about 10 years old the first time I heard this song when my farther played it on the stereo and I think its songs like this that started my love for country.
âAnd somewhere in the darkness the gambler he broke evenâ
Coward of the County is amazing!
*crying*. Such a huge lost, RIP YOU BEAUTIFUL MAN.
Such a great lost. Thank you for the tribute. 20 #1 hits, not counting all other great songs.
Poor Dolly is taking this hard: Islands in the stream
Thank you listening. Our Gambler finally broke even himself and left with us with an Ace we can all keep. I'm incredibly sad that he died. My earliest memories of music include him. The world lost a treasure. He was one of the best. One of my earliest memories of Kenny Rogers was watching him sing "Three Times a Lady" to Barbara Mandrell and her sisters. And of course dancing around with a tennis racket guitar, listening to his record. Mom said that "Coward of the County" was the second song I learned to sing when I was little. I can't remember a time when I didn't know every word of The Gambler. I'm glad you liked it. He'll live on forever as long as people like you keep his music alive.
rip Kenny Rogers

I woke up to the sad news of his passing, I grew up listening to Kenny with my dad before he left and this was one of his favorite songs so thank you Sushi for reacting and sharing this with us!
His duet with Dolly Parton is, without question, the greatest duet ever sang. You can and hear the friendship and love between them. I think you would enjoy it. The song is Islands in the Stream.
NOPE, NOT even.
I HATE that Song. đŹ đ
ha ha. đ đ
He Sings a Duet WITH Sheena Easton that is 80 x (times) WAY đ đ BETTER ("We've Got Tonight") than "Islands In The Stream" (HATE this Song, ha ha)!
And BEFORE ANYONE cusses me out (Save IT, haha!), because i AM a BiiiiiiiiiiG FAN of Dolly Parton (LOVE her Tennessee Voice) And i DO LOVE Kenny Roger's sexy, raspy Voice, But their Song ("Islands...") IS WAY Too YUCKY Together (NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO, NO---- YUCK, ha ha)! đ đ
Michael Huff written by Barry Gibb and Maurice Gibb of the bee gees too! Nice crossover of talent
Lol I personally couldn't stand that song, though I recognize it was a hit for them.
Guts personally nobody cares what you think
Military Veteran only problem is that as a drummer Easton is decent but as a singer Britney Spears in auto tuned is better. Saying anything Easton sings is 80 times better than Dollys worst song proves the VA needs to check your hearing
R.I.P. Kenny Rogers in my book you are the best country singers of all time you is truly missed.
"Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town" one of my favorites.
I would love to hear a Ruby reaction
Great song that đŒ
The Gambler finally broke even.He went peacefully.Another Legend Gone to Heaven.R.i.p Kenny
I miss him already...He knew how to tell a story..A true gentle man...R.I.P Kenny Rogers...People who didn't listen to country even knew your name.. I was 6 years old when I first heard him ....Thank you for your reaction SUSHI! ...I'm sure it meant so very much to him...đąđđč
RIP Kenny Rogers . He was a gentleman and music legend and icon.
This song was one playing for my pop's funeral last year and it reminds me the good times i had with him
I, just like many people across the globe, got into country listening to Kenny Rogers. Then now I branch out and listen to other country artists. It was him and Dolly.
Thanx Sushi, this is a great loss... What a beautiful tribute...
My tribute to legend Kenny, Check this out

He made country music cross the borders of the United States, a unique label in his style, "The Gambler" the country style anthem and so many other hits, like not forgetting his movies. thanks to you in my country and in the world country music was known, feel proud americans for having had this legend and great artist Without a doubt, the legend, the king of country music, thanks for you beatiful music. RIP Kenny Rogers. From Chile
Heard The Gambler when it came out in '78 - I was 10 years old. That famous line about know when to hold 'em, fold 'em, when to walk away and when to run are life lessons. And ace antoine can keep, spoken by a master story teller.
R.I.P. Kenny.
Another great life lesson in there is knowing what to throw away & knowing what to keep.
Im 45 yrs old born in 1974. So when I was 4 years old, when I woke up in the morning, I played with our 8 track system everyday. One of the 8 tracks was Kenny Rogers and I remember listening to this song a lot lol. I found his voice soothing I can still remember that. Coward of the County was on the same 8 track and another great song. RIP Kenny :(
sure is nice to see folks branch out and and listen to all different genres of music ....makes me feel all tingley inside đ€Łđđ€Łđ
I had that album when it first came out in 1978, I was 7 years old. I have loved Kenny Rogers my whole life. He was a great singer who inspired so many in every genre of music. I'm SO glad I got to see him in concert. He was great and really funny. I can't believe he's gone. I cried for 3 days. I couldn't even watch videos or listen to his songs without crying. RIP to the legend.
just live ones true love... "know when to hold em" "know when to fold em" "know when to walk away"... true love holds to the love they sought true!!!!!!!!!!!!
My first recollection of Kenny Rogers was singing a song called, "I Just Dropped in to See What Condition My Condition Was in". How's that for a title. I saw Kenny in concert in the early 80s. Women would approach the stage to hand him a rose as he sang and he would graciously accept. On one occasion, a woman approached the stage carrying a beautifully dressed little girl, maybe 3 years old. When she held up the little girl to hand the yellow rose to Kenny...he didn't take the rose. He took the little girl. He walked around the stage holding the little girl in his arms as he sang to her. Wow!
I don't think I'll ever be able to listen to the lyrics "Somewhere in the darkness The Gambler he broke even." Without tearing up just a little bit again. Have fun teaching angels how to sing Kenny I'll miss you
Such a huge part of my childhood!!!! R.I.P. Kenny Rogers!!!! â€ïžđ„
Kenny was a class act and a true legend. RIP Mr Rogers.
Islands in the stream with Dolly Parton is awesome. RIP Kenny
It was the late 70's that I remember listening to the Album that had this song. I was a young child in primary school. My aunt and her husband LOVED Kenny Rogers and they played this Album at all their house parties. I loved it too! and it brings back great memories.
His flexibility as an artist is unmatched. Compare this song to something like âwhat condition my condition was inâ and youâll see true range as an artist.
I watched Kenny sing this song at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 2000. He was already a legend in country music.
I was at the rodeo that year also to see him I was only 10 years old at that time but I still remember watching him! True Icon
my granddad sung this to me as a baby and i sung this at his funeral last year
such an important song in my life
I was 11 years old and our 6th grade teacher who was a huge Kenny Rogers fan played us this song over and over, along with another song called Coward of the County. And that was my introduction to Kenny Rogers.
EVERY WORD .... EVERY LYRIC ... HAS TO DO WITH "LOVE" and the ONE YOU ARE WITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I remember his concert at Cheyenne Frontier Days. There was a huge thunderstorm & they wanted to cancel his show. Kenny put on a yellow rain slicker & performed for his fans regardless of thunder, lightning & rain! One of his best shows!! Late â70s I think. So glad I got to see him! Sorry to hear of his passing. He was an amazing Country talent.
I grew up listening to Kenny Rogers he always been in my life and I enjoy his music, his acting just the man himself one of the good Soul
He was famous for that rasp in his voice and his ability to put inflection and skillfully tell a story with his voice alone.
Love him and he's songs
He made an entire series, I believe 5 or 6 movies. It was called The Gambler, amazing movies, and amazing cast.
There were 5 made for TV movies in the 80s and 90s based on this song.
RIP Kenny Rogers. đđ
Before I seen this I seen where Kenny Rogers died peacefully in his sleep. Then listening to this song, The Gambler says the best you can do is die in your sleep! Kind of ironic sent chills up my spine! Always loved listening to Kenny Rogers! And best of all still will!!!!!!
Kenny Rodgers was a Legend and a household name. I remember being little listening to the Gambler and other hits. I've seen people recommend most of his greatest songs but I haven't seen anyone suggest "Ruby" yet. That's a sad one but a classic.
That's how he died too, in his sleep among family and friends! Nearly every song of his is iconic and you will LOVE them all!
I remember driving down south to visit family in North Carolina every summer back in the 80's. We would listen to cassettes of country music the entire way there and back. Kenny Rogers was just one of many we listened to, including this song.
I took my ex to see him on Mar 17, 1984 in Honolulu, a month after our daughter was born. We sat 7 rows from the stage, not far from Tom Selleck and Lionel Ritchie, who helped him sing Lady. He sang Lucille, Coward of the county, Islands in the Stream, and some of his First Edition Hits, Ruby don't take your love to town, Just dropped in, but his biggest hit, The Gambler produced 3 movies, and the nickname that stuck with him, for the rest of his career. When you said the gambler, you would automatically think of Kenny Rogers RIP Gambler.
I was fortunate to see him in Detroit at Cobo Hall in I believe 1982. Experiencing Kenny in person was a whole different experience than listening to him through recordings or on the radio. His performance was full of passion and heart, and you felt every word delivered by him regardless of your seat number. I was very emotional .......and moved for a long time.
I member being very emotional through many songs, especially the song, Lady.
He is a unprecedented loss to the music industry, and all of us. I miss him dearly...........
Kenny did an amazing duet with Home Free not long ago. A Christmas song. Children, Go Where I Send Thee. Vocals were amazing.
I love this song from Kenny and Home Free
Sushi, thank you for honoring the iconic Kenny Rogers today.
My heart is broken. đđ RIP Kenny đđđ
Perfect euphemism for life! Much deeper than a gambling song! RIP Mr. Kenny Rogers-â€ïžđđ»
Kenny Rogers is a great story teller. And a legend
I grew up listening to Kenny Rogers in the truck. His songs were part of the soundtrack to my early life.
I heard Kenny Rodger say in a interview once that he didnât thing he was a good singer, but he thought he was a good story teller. He was great at both Rest In Peace KR
LADY OR YOU DECORATED MY LIFE
Lady...the product of a wonderful collaboration between to greats, Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers.
Don't choose, do both!
His death makes me sad. I met him when I was 5 years old ( Iâm now 42). My grandfather took me to a country music festival. I have a picture somewhere in storage. Every time I hear a song or even the mention of his name, it brings me back to better times when my grandfather was still alive.
The Gambler is a legend classic country song. Know when to hold em lines are the most well known lyrics.
RIP KENNY
Sushi Kenny was originally a member of The First Edition, a 60s R&B band! He only ever wanted to be a member of an ensemble but because of that voice he was thrust into the limelight! Then they threw him into Country, though he never ate yes only there thatâs where he hit peopleâs hearts.
I grew up in the 70' s and 80's listening to his music, and of course all his appearances on Hee Haw and The Muppets!
Whenever I hear "The Gambler" I just got to sing along đ
Kenny Rodgers my dear...will never be another like him.
He was a very dapper man and he will be missed. I never heard anything bad about him and he lived a great life. When he died, the preacher had no need to lie at his funeral. He had a great run. Rest in peace sir.
When I was a kid, I would play his greatest hits album as I was going to bed, and I would fall asleep to the soothing sound of his voice.
When I was a kid, I always liked songs that were not contemporary, but much older than me. Instinctively, that was how I knew they were good songs, that they had stood the test of time, and people still sang them and listened to them.
However, contemporary music was just so awesome for the most part in the late 70s, and (in country at least) still in the early 80s, that Kenny Rogers was one of the first "contemporary" country singers that I consistently allowed his, at that time, current songs in my heart.
As a 12 through 18 year old, and especially in those early years while my voice was changing, I sang a variety of types of songs, including especially Kenny Rogers songs, to try and shape my voice into its adult version. And to keep it from going wobbly and "ridiculous" as an adolescent. I was very afraid of my voice sounding like a goose, like teenage boys were stereotypically supposed to sound like. So I used Kenny, and others, and especially this song by him (and Coward Of The County) to practice and exercise my voice. Eventually I got that raspy sound, and could do it at will. And the vocal focus that entailed trying to sing like Kenny Rogers and others during that early period of my life, helped me develop an expressive adult voice later.
Also it helped that I just loved most of his songs. Back then, as a kid, you could count on if you turned on the radio, great, or at least good music, would come pouring out on any station most of the time. And even if you didn't like a particular song, you pretty much knew the next song would be good.
But by 1983 that was already changing, and from then on, at the age of 16, I switched entirely to the Oldies stations because I couldn't stand the lowering of the musical quality that was already happening by that time. I have never blinked since then, never surrendered to the so-called "music" industry, so that is where my music comes from now as well.
When/if they ever raise their musical standards back up the 60s and 70s level, then I will start listening to contemporary music again. I look forward to it, if it ever happens.
I first heard Kenny when he was with the First Eddition and he still had red hair and beard. đ "Ruby, Dont Take Your Love to Town" is about a wounded veteran. My dad was a 20 year retired veteran that served in Viet Nam and this song just brings it back to me.
The Gambler has left the table Rest In Peace Kenny Rogers đđœđđœđđœ
Thank you for paying tribute to Kenny. His voice was very distinguishable. He was from Houston, my home town, and started out in a pop band. And I agree with a lot of your viewers about doing "Coward of the County." You'll love it!
Kenny got his start in the 60's I believe, one of his earliest known, controversial songs, was Ruby.
Coward of the County, The Gambler, both made into multiple movies. Lady was a song he gave to his friend Lionel Richie. Islands in the Stream, written for him by Barry Gibbs of The Bee Gees became a monster hit when he made it a duet with Dolly Parton. His first band The First Edition was one of my very first records. He will truly be missed
I grew up on Kenny Rogers. Loved seeing him do this song with the Muppets as a kid. And his duets with Dolly Parton. And even the song he did with Home Free.
I recall this song being on the radio all the time during my childhood. Also my grandfather had it on an 8-track with other Kenny Rogers songs.
Very sad day but at least we will always have Kenny's music and remember his warm smile. His music has been around most of my life.
I was 11 when this song was released in 78. So many life lessons from a master storyteller.
I saw Kenny live in 1982 in Dithan' Alabama And the concert was one of the best i had ever been to.
One of Kenny's first hits was "Ruby". It was written by another famous country musician; Mel Tillis. It's an hard hitting song with vivid symbology!
I grew up on country and rock. I was about seven and on Christmas i got a little record player with two albums; Queen-The Game and Kenny Rogers-The Gambler. I was luck enough to be traveling about three years ago and see his live show. It was phenomenal.
I grew up listening to him I am member my mother always Playing Kenny Rogers records almost every day
R.I.P, Mr. Rogers. It's funny what we remember. This song was out when I was in High School. Our English teacher had us start every class with 5 minutes of free writing; just write whatever thoughts you had. One day he said, 'but today, I don't want 90% of you writing the lyrics to The Gambler.' Lol. That's exactly what I had done the day before. Mr. Schultz was a good dude; he was a fan of both ABBA and Gordon Lightfoot.
This song really means a lot to me because it was one of my dad's favorite songs. He passed away several years ago and at the time of his passing we were not very close, but this song always reminds me of when I was younger and we were close. So because of that it really feels special to me.
My dads name was Kenny and his middle name was rogers and my dad had every Kenny rogers vinyl record you could think of so I grew up listening to him every weekend since I could remember.
Him and his songs remind me of my childhood so much. Of my Grandma and my Aunt. ââ„ïž
I remember this song being played on the muppet show when I was kid. I love this song to this day. It makes me laugh to think that if you played a song today for kids/teens/adults that had a line in it that said "the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep" they would fall apart lol! Still my number 1 favorite country song to this day!
The Gambler was a TV mini-series, back in the 80s, when TV mini-series were a thing. I remember hearing this song playing while my parents were watching.
The best advice I have ever gotten in my life. Whenever I feel discourage,I just remember the chorus.
Rest in peace Kenny! There's a mega hit that he sang with another legendary singer...Sheena Easton, which was: WE'VE GOT TONIGHT! Then Sheena herself sang another very beautiful song called: FOR YOUR EYES ONLY! Which was the name & soundtrack to the James Bond Movie, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY! I can GUARANTEE that you're gonna love them both!! Peace!
The Gambler great life advice. I was very fortunate to discover his music at a very young age. I loved Kenny Rodgersđą... I was not prepared to see his best friend Dolly Parton cry. I loved their song Real Love.
His song Lady is one of my favorite songs.
I was lucky enough to see him in concert during my sophomore year, and that was only 5 years ago. I'm so glad did, 'cause he was one of my all-time favorite country singers. I hated that I didn't get to meet him at the time (although, it seemed like at the time he wasn't in the best of health, so I understood why I couldn't). Another good song of his is a duet with Dolly Parton called "Islands in the Stream."
Kenny Roger tapping-out in the middle of the Apocalypse is the most "Know When to Fold Them" shit ever!
Rest in Peace. Kenny Rogers. You decorated all of our lives.
Giving thanks to all of the reactors, paying homage to a legend. R.I.P. Kenny, we will miss you.
P.S. Coward of the County is actually his best song of all time.
RIP Kenny Rogers one of the greatest country singer đąđą
U are absolutely right about the gambling metaphor and the hands life deals!!đđR.I.P. Kenny Rodgers, u will be missed and always remembered by millions. đâ„ïž
RIP Kenny going to be missed, glad you left us with your amazing music
I grew up on Kenny! My first concert ! Rest in Peace
I first remember hearing Kenny Rogers in 78 or 79 and I was born in 75. The song the gambler was actually a bit on the old muppet show and that played in 79 or 80 I think.
I was just a kid. In south Alabama. I can remember my dad had this record. I played this song a million times. So many times my parents got mad and hid the album from me. I found the album because they suck at hiding. And the music went on. RIP Kenny.
Singing while changing/removing jacket - mastered by Kenny Rogers and Fred Rogers.
Damn, this reaction got me. I'm a 42 year old man and I feel like an overly emotional teenage girl right now. I remember listening to Kenny Rogers on 8 track in my dad's Oldsmobile when I was kid. We listened to all kinds of music, from the Supremes to Hank Williams, but there was always a Kenny record or 8 track in the rotation. My dad died when I was 16. I revisit Kenny's music from time to time and it makes me think of him. This one hit me a little harder than most celebrity / entertainer deaths. RIP
