Temu is the second-most popular shopping app in the U.S. behind only Amazon. Why? Because everything you can buy on Temu is dirt cheap. From $5 shoes to a Nintendo switch for only $7, these deals seem too good to be true. But are they? The truth is that most of us know little about the app's origins. Is Temu a scam? Or is it just a glorified China spy app?

I find it ironic that you make a whole video explaining how bad temu is then promote it in the description
Is Wish the same way?
So if I buy a pair of sneakers for £1.09, plus free delivery, which they're advertising at the moment, will I just be charged £1.09? And can't I just order using my laptop without downloading the app onto my mobile phone?
You are also kind man who take people's 💰 money ,date. You are not innocent, you want money from people.
You're just another shyster who is as bad as temu.
The problem i see about buying high priced quality merchandise is...everything you buy is made in china whether its branded or not.😢
It's like the incredible deal I got through some research some years ago....I bought 5 speakers from "TSC" "the speaker company. They figured out which factory in China was making the Polk Audio speakers, hopped on a plane, went there and bought the same speakers for 1/4 of the price, put their own label on them and sold them for 1/2 price. Still use them today.
That's not really true...you can Google any product with the words "not made in china" and do a little searching and most things can be bought from non Chinese manufacturers. There is also subreddits devoted to posting products not made in China. It is true that most major and "quality" brands that people pay higher prices for are just the same over priced Chinese made junk.
@@johnf817 That's like being King Alfred, sitting on his armchair at low tide commanding the tide to not come in.
Unfortunately a lot of fake or not very well constructed items come from China too. They brought their bad reputation on themselves.
@@Myself-yh9rr If anyone buys anything made in China, and most electronics made in Korea, you get what you deserve.
I understand your point sir. On the other hand, in this day of age even your Calculator app is collecting data. There’s no hiding if you’re online.
The point is its a chinese owned compant collecting data ofcourse we love everyone but china is preparing for war with us through the digital era 😊

You just have to fight back. Turn OFF your location. Turn off your phone when not using it. Turn off location tracking. Give false info to everyone. Never give your phone number to any business unless you can't help it, and much more.
Surely I appreciate this information also. But did anyone else find it at least a bit ironic that whilst warning us about the potential dangers of temu that one if the links posted in the pinned information is a link to "get free stuff on temu"??? Wondered why there was no resolution stated regarding the offers made to promote the site . . .
@@mutteringmale You can still be monitored with your phone off.
Temu on an android system does NOT have any permissions by default. And you can turn off background activity. What you described as data mining, Google does every time you open the app! Also there are maybe 1% of products that are made in the USA. Everthing is made in China. Qustion is, do you want to pay more for it on Amazon?
you are absolutely incorrect in your assessment. temu bypasses permissions and gains access to everything on your device and every possible function. android works on passing what are called INTENTS. temu exploits this fact. apps can talk to each other without permissions. stop spreading lies
Reality is: Target (and others) buys from China and sells it. Amazon does the same model as Temu where Mom and Pop buys something and resells it at Amazon. Buying from Temu just cuts the middle man. And yes, they all collect your data!!!
Virtually everything you purchase come from china
Definitely true!👍
So does everyone else! Go to get credit from a local store....they want everything! So why is Temu wrong?
But, when you buy from Temu the return policy is terrible, many of the products are purposefully lacking in detail, or defective.
No Temu sells the crap that the third party sellers on Amazon sell lol. They broke the law selling at a loss in the beginning be we are living in very strange times where law is enforced only when convenient to those in power.
So basically, we actually get the stuff but we give away our informations? Better deal than Facebook

Just want to say thanks. It's nice to hear someone just lay out the information. Refreshing!
Google and Apple are doing the same, but are local American companies and it is OK, right?
Amazon and Ebay did it too. He said that.
I agree in your comments about TEMU in many ways, but isn't Amazon, eBay, selling the same Chinese products at a higher price? Does the Amazon app and eBay app doesn't collect data from your phone giving them access to the same things on your phone? I agree things from China are definitely not manufacture as American made products but we are not manufacturing anything in the USA, most of everything that is purchased in any of this company's is 98% Chinese or manufactured some place else besides the USA, I wish there was in the search option of Amazon to look for products made only the USA I would not mind paying a higher price as long as they were made here.
Americans love to be cheated and fooled by American companies even they know 90% products from American e-commerce websites are made in China. Remember, many people complain about buying products from Chinese e-commerce website have political motives. They are just play dirty political games to influence people to stir up anti-China political agenda.
Thee exact same.
I just look for brand names or names I recognize as US, UK, EU, or Australian brands (no alphabet soup/obvious Chinese manufacturer/knockoff name), and read the listing. Listings written for Chinese items have a very obvious format you can begin to recognize. It takes more time to do and costs more, but in the end I've very rarely had to return things or had things that break within a week/month, or been shipped counterfeit items. Most people just pick something off the first page and don't care who made it so long as it's cheap and ships with Prime ( my husband annoys me by doing this).
Not to mention that people who buy "Made in China" are supporting a communist funded, Anti-American and Anti-Freedom regime. There is THAT!!
I agree and eBay has gone downhill 😳
I have ordered hundred's of things from Temu, and I have always been extremely satisfied. They have a great selection of merchandise, and free shipping. So what if they collect data, so does every other company in the USA and across the world. I donate 25 cents of every order I place with them to plant a tree. I am a very satisfied customer.
And foolish. You make a perfect NWO slave.
don't easily believe what you hear from others. Believe your own experience. Most Americans just a hobbit of anti-China.
I agree, I buy off Temu all the time and always been happy with the items and postage has always been safe
Except that it’s made with forced labour
@@divinedivadayspa1908 American Companies also buy from Forced Labor! They manipulate the stock market and God knows what else. American companies are not angels. So I will continue to buy from TEMU.
That's interesting. I have noticed that Temu tries to lure you to download their app with all sorts of huge discounts that you cannot get on your computer just using their website to shop so this is why I have been hesitant. I have been worried that downloading an app on a phone may result in identity theft and/or malware which can damage the operating system, and may also be linked to info on the computer.
As for products being "junk" I have seen the exact same products in Walmart stores and Amazon, so I really wonder if we are getting junk anyhow regardless of where we shop, as there seem to be very few true American manufacturers.
and google dont do the same haha or facook , instagram LOL. i got clothes from there and its high quality ., evertyhing was beautiful and could wash it nice.
The quality is EXTREMELY different between TEMU and Walmart. TEMU loses ~$30 per ORDER. Why? To lure you in, the same way Uber started by providing very cheap rides and then backed them up later.
The Temu app is nothing but a spy app. I would never even think about buying anything from the scummy Chinese based company :D
Don’t download it i started getting scam calls from china
@cubsfan1245 Hey there. Please can you tell me why you think it's a spy thing? I'd genuinely like to know how you've arrived at that and maybe even what they're using the info they're spying on for? I've ordered a few bits from them, took 3/4 weeks to arrive (wasn't in a hurry) and what came is better than expected tbh. They were courteous and informative through the whole process too. I'm not bothered about using them again, but this thread kinda alarmed me a little. Would appreciate knowing more if you can help? 👍

This is correct. Because I got annoyed by all the intrusive message TEMU would post on my phone. So I "FORCED STOPPED" it. TEMU turned itself and it's notifications back on. So, I "FORCED STOPPED" it again and it did the same thing. I realized then that this app is a "SPY APP". Over all, I have good experience with Temu the same as I have with any other American e-commerce websites. I don't believe anything others tell me but I believe my own experience and so far my experience with Temu is positive. Remember, people say things with their own objectives and most of the time, they don't tell you 100% truth. Hi. i just wanted to put this out there. i watch this outdoor gear review channel and he got what seemed like a really good tent for a low price from Temu that simply made no sense. so he looked around, and found the exact same (good quality) tent, Branded, by a single Company who makes that specific tent. So apparently he contacted the Company and said hey man, these people are selling your actual tent, with no branding, at like half the price of yours. He says, and here's the freakin WEIRD part. So creepy and sus- i guess they didn't respond, then suddenly The Temu listing was immediately taken down! ok something already fishy times 2 is happening at this point. THEN, the Company takes down THEIRS, (why????) and actually Discontinues the Product. What in the Actual hell just happened??!💀🧐
i think there are so many layers to this and grifting is happening at all sorts of angles, it all smells like corruption and b.s. lies operating as something it is not, for very nefarious purposes.
good video. I usually dont ever leave comments, but this is good research done. I would recommend including sources in the description so that people could read it for themselves/feel more inclined to believe the info/and point out any inaccuracies, helping you and everyone watching. Overall business rating 9/10, upfront video, no BS, and good delivery (unlike Temu) :)
He said it based on his belief. There is no evidence. He shouldn't be making this video. He just wants to get more viewers.
Great video, very important information
Thanks for this video!!!
Thank you for the thorough break down. It confirmed my suspicions. A lot of work and expertise went into this analysis. It's very much appreciated.
Really, really good video! The internet needs stuff like this.
Great analysis here, Steve!
If Target, Walmart and other stores also sell made in china products, then what is the difference from ordering directly from Temu? It's the SAME!
This is so true, even other apps like social media platforms and even damn games track everything you do, but my real question is.. why is this even allowed? If Apple google, TikTok , and much more track your info all the time, it must be legal then? If so, then why?
it’s legal because if it tracks what you do ON the app works by giving you what you want for example youtube tracks you for your videos for you.
but temu is illegal because it tracks OUT side the app and IN the app
but correct me if iam wrong
It's just targeted marketing. It's not illegal. It's existed longer than the Internet. Before the internet, people would get catalogs sent to them where you could order by mail. If you purchased something from a company that sold clothing, you'd subsequently get all kinds of junk mail from other companies that sold clothing. If you bought baby products, you'd get all kinds of coupons and advertisements for baby products in the mail.
This is nothing different. They collect information about your interests. Then they send you relevant ads based on those instead of sending ads about things you'd never think about purchasing.
The only thing that concerns me is HOW they collect that data. I've heard it can be collected via your phone's camera and microphone. I'm not 100% convinced about this considering how in the world anyone would have time to spy on 3 billion or more people just to obtain such data. But still.....
@@jospehtorres-od3wm it doesn’t track outside the app. All app can track outside the app if you give permision

Great to know. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Steve, you are always so honest with us and don't take the advertising money from services you don't support. How can I know what data Alibaba and AliExpress gather? I use these apps. I know the American companies are taking data too. After speaking about items near my phone (without typing them) and getting ads a day or two later, after about a dozen times I became paranoid and also put tape over the cameras. 😢 I hope we can pass data collection laws like other countries have.
Shoes. Pens. Writing pads. Cooling fan. Charge cables...its a much longer list. Helps me as I'm not exactly drowning in cash.

Have ordered from TEMU on two occasions. Free shipping. Happy with the products, but not the delivery. Items shipped from UK to Cyprus where I currently live. I’m more worried about Google and their cronies than I am about Temu and the Chinese government…🤝
I'm the same. They shadow ban me on CZcams and sell everywhere you go, what you buy and all your personal information to anyone. They are the Evil Empire.
Anyone remember when they had a "motto" of "don't be evil"?? Funny how they never said "don't DO evil" . . . Easy enough to separate the actions from the "being" in the mind!
I find that the huge volume of things make it more likely to find things you can use. Delivery is good. The only thing I don't like is that due to very limited space for things I need to consider my purchases very carefully. And then they have a very aggressive sales technique where you're constantly offered by g discounts for buying more stuff. Well, the discounts are good but NOT great and unless you have the space to keep everything, you need to be extra careful with your purchases
IDK about all that
Temu lied about encryption! It delivered my orders to the wrong city and then refused to give me my money back or reship my order! Even after I repeatedly told them Temu is incompetent, a liar and abusive! Customer service is a joke!
Interesting, thought provoking video. Some questions I have are ... what if you have an iPhone and only open Temu through Chrome or Safari? ... How about your desktop computer ... can Temu harvest data if you browse Temu or buy from Temu from Chrome or other browsers? How do we as busy people dealing with all the red tape everywhere find time and find the information to know who and how is taking our data? It seems if you don't agree to privacy policies or EULA agreements you can't participate in the Internet. Again thank you for the interesting video. It was worth the time to watch.
Temu is about 90% of the ads i see on YT and FB. As a rule, anyone advertising on social media tends to be "too good to be true" levels of tatty scam. I've tried buying based on ads a handful of times, and every time its been a misdirection to the point that I'm now incredibly distrusting of ads i see online in this way (e.g. algorithmic static ads / whatever you call them). Especially how hard theyre advertising right now, feels like brainwashing. No thanks. Even searching for "why has Temu suddenly exploded" or "is temu a scam" threw up some weird results for me... But that's probably due to CZcams's weird new (and bad) search algorithm
I downloaded the Temu app and was suspicious of the prices. Now weird shit happens on my phone. A weird screen popped up AFTER i deleted the app and some music came on with no screen open. This is the reason i felt downloading the Temu app was a red flag!

If they are about stealing information or not that I can't tell. But very probably. Yet, it's NOTHING different from other apps and most online retailers. However, as someone who barely comments, I always get excited when someone posts about temu because my experience so far has been great, and my friends as well. The too many texts are annoying, yes, but finding things half price than Amazon and sometimes sheen, in this economy... I'll take it. Sometimes, I still find better deals in Amazon or Sheen, so it is not all the time. Item's arrived as described, and the quality is the same as expected from cheap items in Amazon that also come from China. 🤷🏽♀️ And no, we are not able to buy high-quality quality items in the US because prices are out of the roof. Some are justified, but others are simply greedy businesses using the inflation excuse to increase their prices more than needed, leaving the population no other choice than taking those risks.

Why do people assume that all Chinese products are bad or of poor quality? Dumb take. There is a thing called Quality Control. Yes alot of brands are chinese made. A offbrand drill from Harbor Freight that is already off brand to begin with is not the same thing as buying a Milwakee drill that is made in China. Duh. Your comment ignores standard industry pratice of compromising quality to hit a cheaper price. i.e we could use X material that cost Y or we can use Z material that costs less then Y. i.e. you get what you pay for. I downloaded the Temu app and was suspicious of the prices. Now weird shit happens on my phone. A weird screen popped up AFTER i deleted the app and some music came on with no screen open. This is the reason i felt downloading the Temu app was a red flag!
😮 my phone's been playing up for a while and I found spyware had installed itself into my phone and the only app different to other phones I had was temu , so it must of been them
But don't all places where you buy stuff track what you are doing? I don't shop on my phone. I think most people are still going to buy on Temu because they can get the stuff at a cheaper price even though some of the stuff isn't that great. The times I did order from Temu I haven't had too many problems yet. This does give me something to think about though for sure. Thanks for sharing.
Yes. That is correct. The difference here is that their parent company has a history of malware on apps which goes beyond tracking
@@mywifequitherjob ahhh, okay.
@mywifequitherjob so what do we do if we already shopped at the temu app am I screwed
@@mywifequitherjob What about the desktop version?
@@mywifequitherjob sir your telling us to purchase higher quality items yeah I agree a lot that quality matter but those it’s are all still from China. I
Thank you, Steve Chou, for 'enlightening' us about Temu . We, had been skeptical of this website.
when prices are this 'dirt'
cheap... there should be a catch!
Probably awful labour conditions. I watched a video about Shein. The workers have their 1st months pay withheld, work 16-17hour days, only allowed to go once they have made their quota of clothes, only given 1 day off a month and are paid by quantity of products made. If they make mistakes they are charged.
Thank you.
Thank you! I am really concerned that I don't see more scrutinizing of this website. This cannot be good for commerce, creators of patented products, online privacy, or our country in the end. I see red flags, but little critical examination.
This man has been payed for doing this.
@bonanderson9398: Amazon and EBAY sellers are some of the same ones selling on Temu
as long as im saving money, it is all good :P I see so many items selling on amazon for 5 times the price or even ten times. Why should I pay the premium if i can get the exact same item for a fraction of the price?! I dont see why i should support shops making big bucks out of these items. I get prices suited for chinese market. Which is good.
@@shinjid3705the products are low quality so you’re not really getting the same thing
I order from them all the time with no problem
I’ve begun having trouble with TEMU. I either received items that I didn’t order and/or didn’t receive orders that I did order.
I tried Temu after seeing the Super Bowl ads and while my order did arrive quickly, there were problems with both items I bought. I ordered a 3 pc. bath mat set and they sent the wrong one (the one I ordered had 3 mats for the floor - but the one sent had a cushion for the toilet seat and only 2 floor mats). I also ordered a modern spiral table lamp, but the one they sent was only "similar" to the one in the photo in the Temu listing. While there was no actual statement of the height of the lamp, it was VERY obvious that the one I received was about 1/2 the height of the one in the listing photo, and just was not as attractive being so squat. However, on the bright side, when I clicked on the "contact Temu customer service" link, I was able to describe my problems and following the prompts online was issued a full refund for these 2 items. So my trial of Temu showed me that the products are not as they might seem, but I was not ripped off by Temu.
Thank video 😮😮😮😮
I have not had any problems with Temu so far. But, I have been scammed by many American companies. Homeowner's Insurance is one of them.
I never use my phone for ordering online but use my laptop, which is loaded with a ton of protection. I know nothing is 100% safe but I would never, ever use my phone for ordering, paying bills or banking.
Keep at the truth man it's very much appreciated
True, not worth it! Fabric really thin, jewelry very cheap. Plastic breaks easily. Not recommended!
I love TEMU! I have gotten everything from clothes, shoes, bedding, blankets, dishes, kitchen utensils, dog toys, makeup, razors, wigs, hair extensions, socks, containers, craft supplies, fake flowers… You get my point I have bought everything! Oh and you said most of the people that gush over TEMU are paid to 🤣🤣 I wish!
You're the problem with society.
Cool
I find it interesting that you call TEMU an APP - when it's a website/website that has an app.
an interesting and informative video! thanks! also, I already see these bots in the comment section defending this app
I am very weary of online shopping, yet now living in a small farmlife town, we don't have a choice.
I pray I don't make a huge mistake here!
I research heavily size product material ( plastic vs metal etc) if ordering online as hate to go thru return process.closest post office now 14 miles away ... live rural on a farm..closest dollar general 20 miles, Walmart 40 miles away..learned to scour garage sales, local auctions& resale shops..not as picky re matching towels sheets etc. Little money did that find it at yard sale grab it especially if good brand better than new from wslmart....oh to grow old & living with less on purpose to reduce adding more to landfills...now my microwave out side it works but kid over flowed stuff bunch paint peeling ..gonna sand insides down bought 8$ high temp paint can to repaint it according to you tube
try keep using it..instead of tossing working one & replacing it with another 50$ shiny new wamart one.
00:20 I asked Kim several months ago on his issue. Didn't get a direct response but glad to find out she has a position on this matter.
I will not never sign up or ordered from them.
I'm leery of things that sound too good to be true. Prices might be legit; but the exposed underlying personal info makes me balk
Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, and Tiktok all do the exact same thing. As least you get great deals with Temu. I've bought 20+ item hauls several times with them. For the most part, all the products were as advertised. Idk, the deals on there are great. Which is what matters to me. I don't really see how any of this data stuff is really ever gonna effect the average person.
Shit product even for a low price. Tools accessories are not useable
Good news to you, their silicone molds for resin art are very good. I don't have a problem with them.
I was a recent customer of Temu , until they started doing this . I first bought from Temu two years ago , have over 100 reviews some good some not so , I specifically send a budget so I do not go to crazy each week and since free shipping it was not a problem . minimum was $20 which was not a problem , but then three months ago they raised minimum to $30 and I went to support about why the price hike , Temu reduced minimum back to $20 , then two weeks ago they then raised minimum to $40 stating that it was a shipping wastage and needed to bulk up parcels , and this Temu would not reduce . To me it seems that Temu will raise your online shipping minimum over time till you buy more items or start paying shipping . I wonder what other website sells cheap items but charges shipping ??? .🤔
Fantastic video. If i may offer a suggestion around the 3:41 mark. It would be nice to have a little snippet of how you got this information on video. I personally don't doubt these numbers since i assume you did the research yourself. However, i also don't like when people throw out random statistics without showing the sources either since its easy for people to make up a number for their claim or misinterpret the number on purpose to make their argument i.e. its a 10% increase. okay are we saying its 10% to 20% or 10% to 10.10%? 2 different things for example. linking sources via a direct link or if that is not an option since this was aggregated data from multiple sources, showing the evidence first hand with a screenshot, video, something. would shut down any criticism of someone fact checking your data.
What if you dont get the app and shop on the website from your computer?
Just the question I have asked 👍
You'll probably be tracked on your PC, and obviously, you're handing over things like your credit/debit card, your addresses, phone numbers, etc. It's what ever happens to your data past that point.
Support forced labor like a billionaire?
