A key point you didn't touch on and is extremely relevant at least as far as Modern and Standard cards/products are concerned is power creep. Modern Horizons 2 devastated the financial value of certain cards, arguably even more so than high clip reprinting because they're obsolete now.
What we're seeing is that if cards aren't reserved list or seeing play at competitive tables they're not holding value.
Yes, reprints definitely affect this market too, looking at you Enemy Fetch Lands, and now Shock Lands, but cards like Karn Liberated, Snapcaster Mage, Dark Confidant, Tarmogoyf etc...dropped heavily at release of Ultimate Masters but rebounded.
They're now "cheap" because Modern Horizons 2 printed cards that are more powerful and rendered them mostly obsolete, and they aren't played consistently anymore.
Modern cards have value when they're played at the competitive tables, and since Wotc/Hasbro can print more powerful cards bypassing Standard entirely that's where the lack of consumer confidence kicks in.
None of the finance channels ever go into gameplay because they don't play the game. It's the entire reason for tcg's to have value and its almost always left out of the conversation
When everyone is collecting no one is playing if no one plays no nostalgic connection can be made which means the future Forest of growth gets stunted. Also Tarmogoyf has one of the saddest prices crashes in all of magic at one point that was a 200+ dollar card.
how do you revert back from this then? is it possible?
@@vintagemagic You don't. When the player base and subsequently consumer base is keenly aware that a company's cares more about making short term profits than long term growth by injecting cards directly into formats it's akin to strip mining...when the mine runs dry it's over.
Agree that this is huge. But I calculate they are printing over 100 times more rares than just 5 years ago due to the Preconstructed decks. Nobody is mentioning how bad those reprints are. They're worse than the sets.
WOTC needs to stop catering to "customers" who don't spend money. It's happening to a ton of companies
i don't play MTG but i buy singles simply because I love the art.
yeah i started with mtg this way too!
DC- Happy New Year from Santa Marta, Colombia! :-)
Also do you have IG?
@vintagemtg
If you haven't played with sorcery yet I highly recommend you crack a box. It reminds me so much of the joy I had with early magic.
I am so happy I jumped ship in time all I have left are 102 VIP boosters and a couple of M/MH1 and 2022 draft / collectors boxes.
WotC/Hasbro seems to be extremely reluctant to run physical events. They probably have count that digital is the future where they can grow. Too bad the track record is poor.
Print it yourself because you love the game
Most Pokémon committed youtubers say Pokémon brand be obsolete in some timeline like 50-150 years. Will be unclear will the peak of that collectible (Pokémon) happen during our lifetime. Same is mostly said by more objective parties that collectibles are extremely hard to be multigenerational stuff and we are seeing this in mtg. Most collectors it's best to sell during their lifetime.
Lmfao. This dude thinks Pokémon is gonna be relevant in a literal thousand years time. Smfh.
@@shawnskomo5683 Haha true, but who knows, probably a few rich guys that collect it like art or other luxury goods.
YES....THIS CONVERSAION OF 150 TO 1000 YEARS IS SO FUCKING INSAIN.... 20-30 YEARS IT ALL THAT YOU WILL NEED TO THINK ABOUT, ANYTHING MORE IS JUST CRAZY STUPID@@shawnskomo5683
Hasbro has been trying to be the market maker and pushing product onto customers. They need to learn that the market is made by the customers. If the product is good the customers will pull the product from the market. The pull causes an increase in demand and then market prices go up.
When the company pushes product they are basically putting it out there at an elevated price, trying to not leave any money on the table, and telling players that they should buy the product because it is expensive and is worth something on the market and therefore collectible. This tactic eventually causes resentment when the player buys a product at an elevated price and then the value goes down. A customer will only go through this cycle so many times before they give up on the product entirely.
What Hasbro is going to find is that once they lose a customer that it is extremely expensive to get that customer back and if Hasbro doesn't do something fast to buy those customers back it is going to be the end of them. This goes for MTG, the action figures, and D&D.
Refreshing video; based on reality.
Mtg doesn't have a strong IP; they're literally just playing cards, good enjoyable ones maybe, notjing more outside of that.
It's now a Generational issue...
Sorcery has lots of potential
Not potential you mean Milking just like argent saga was and metazoo and fab until they dropped him.
@@tysnow9524Your comparing comparing Sorcery and Fab to Metazoo, is just wrong.
I agree this is different. I'll never be able to enjoy magic again after they deleted everyone's DCI accounts and complete cut out Standard and Local Game Stores. so sad
I dont bother with new stuff, just buy old foils and put them in binders endlessly :p
How about people that put a lot of money in MTG online and one day there is mtg Arena and you need to rebuy everything again :) When I saw that I never imagined people just ate that shit sandwich without a drink and where asking for another one!
The long awaited pool update lol!!!!
Also I regards to the grading video pgc is a joke. Rudy makes videos bashing grading company's saying lgs don't want your graded cards just to flip his stands and by a meme percentage of a company 69% majority even his ownership percentage is a joke. Which rudy has been using to over charge his bundles. Rudys stands is a text book definition of hypocritical.
Another big reason Pokemon does so well over MTG is kids. What 7-8 year old begs for MTG..... None.
Too hard to play until you're 13. Back in the 90's anyone could learn and the art was not Ai
At this point I Consider mtg a toxic asset, and game doesn't wow me like it did, everything bad that happend to mtg has been self inflicted,. So my go-to tcg to play and collect right now is Sorcery: Contested Realm
you know the financial side is bad when the guy who does tons of financial stuff says to avoid it. I've been buying single cards for ages because the art is so good. I couldn't bring myself to invest in that stuff though.
I think there's PLENTY of money to be made in the secondary market, you just can't sit on them anymore. Look at singles from Commander Masters in August. They were stupid low in September, now all the key ones are up. You just can't sit on items, and you have to hustle more imo
I know nothing about trading /investment and l'm keen on getting started. What are some strategies to get started with?

So the issue is all the new players have been influenced by the rise of streamers which have killed the game in hope that they will be one of the few bragging about their vintage collection. Maybe insted of price graphs and speculations maybe talk about the game play and since most can't afford new magic the newer generation is going to the reprints....you know yougioh in the last now 4 years has reprinted prize cards like aa zeus 6 more times but hey wotc is the problem eh it's not like fab has reprinted fryadel spring tunic 4-5 times already....
Strong points but the gameplay is impossible to follow because reading the card no longer explains the card-even if it doesn't have 2 sides to read.
Konamis TCG division has more revenue and profit than Wizards' in 2021 and 2022 but you never mention Yugioh as a card game. Why is that?
THOUSANDS OF YEARS???????????? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
And now Metazoo closes.
Dude, seriously, we need to chat. You need to hear what I have to explain about why this industry is collapsing.
Investors need to be informed because everyone is getting scammed right now, including you.
