    Correction* first chord is a D9 (no3). Also I call the numbers in the relative major (F major) as oppose to Dminor. Growing up in church we only ever called the numbers in major or the relative major if it was a minor key. This made it a lot easier. The notes are exactly the same.

      I get why you say this about nbering in reference to thajor scale, but this makes it more difficult to think in terms of parrellel modes, which is essential for thjnking about borrowed chords, a lot of what you are attempting here. Good stuff tho.

    So many so called experts giving opinions in the comments. I don’t know if this sort of advice giving and correction is helpful and edifying or just an opportunity for people to show what they know and throw shade at someone else I think that it is the latter some people can’t stand for anyone (certain people read between the lines) to possess knowledge and or share knowledge.
    Really fingers ? chord spelling ? While all true completely unnecessary. It’s a simple short progression let it ride and on to the next.
    By the way I am a gospel piano player director and organist I have my degree in music and have over 20 years experience and I was able to watch the video without so much as one criticism

    • @stefanguy
      @stefanguy  Před 4 lety +2

      Thank you so much for this comment. I totally agree. Sadly this is the nature of CZcams. Some people do not know how to take the meat and leave the bones. That is to say extrapolate the information they need and leave what they do not need, see as perfect or disagree with. I think there is room for feedback and correction where I might have given misinformation or can improve but there’s a way to give that constructive criticism that is helpful. A lot of the time it it’s not helpful, unnecessary, rude and entitled. No one is forcing anyone to watch any videos but people feel like they can dictate how the video should be to serve their best interest. Yes I want to make the videos enjoyable for everyone but there’s only so much you can do before I becomes unenjoyable for the creator to even make the videos in the first place. Honestly there was a point where I was just going to stop creating the videos all together but thankfully I have people like you watching, supporting and encouraging me. Which in fact is the vast majority, so I just remember that when creating content. It may not be perfect but there are people that know how to take what they need and find the videos very helpful. So we keep going! Thank you again 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

    Your analysis seems a bit off.
    1. There's no reason to call your first chord D7sus2 - It's much simpler to see this as a Dm9, with or without the m3rd. This gives you your minor i chord. (Note: you said the m3, the F, is optional - if it's optional, then the chord really isn't a suspended dominant).
    2. Everything here is diatonic to they key of D minor. You can then call entire progression: i, bVI, i, bVI, v, iv.
    Trust your ear: Your first chord sounds like home base, yeah? That's your i.

    • @maffakah
      @maffakah Před 4 lety

      Its neither minor or major with a sus 2 chord and like you said, everything is diatonic to D minor so need to flatten the VI

    • @stefanguy
      @stefanguy  Před 4 lety +30

      Fair play, cheers Greyson. Evidently my theory is far from the best but I’m working on it, comments like this help me improve for next time. Logic output that it was a D7sus2, I didn’t realise the third made no difference but now I know. This is a beat making channel first and foremost and I have been asked to share chord progressions. I play by ear with very limited theory so it’s reflected in the videos but they’ll continue to improve. Also regarding the numbers I’ve grown up just using the numbers always in major or the relative major. Which makes it simpler. Thus counting F as the 1 even though I’m in a minor key. As it doesn’t change the sound. The notes are the same, just a different point of reference. Anyways thanks for the feedback!

      @maffakah Před 4 lety

      The chord numerals on this is a bit weird, I haven't studied theory that long but its strange that he never play his tonic chord, so I dont think this would be in F major. I think this is in D minor, which is the relative minor to F major (they use same notes but different intervals) So this progression is basically i7sus2 - VI - i7sus2 - VI - v - iv

    • @nandoplove
      @nandoplove Před 4 lety

      @@maffakah Interesting analysis. Thanks for the reply. What I actually ment was every scale for example A harmonic minor has fixed chords (in my understanding). Not only the root notes are fixed but also (and this is my point) the chords. Im7M - IIm7(b5) - III7M(#5) - IVm7 - V7 - VI7M - VII#dim would be it. Most scales have mostly m and M but only 1 or 2 times sus, aug and dim.. So what scale would e.g. this here be? you said its D minor. Natural, harmonic or melodic?? I am new to music theory. Just want to understand if every chord in a scale is fixed (expept maybe adding a 7th or a 9th) and how to figure out what scale it is when I play complex chords.. I hope you understand.
      Thanks for the reply..

    • @maffakah
      @maffakah Před 4 lety

      No problem at all! I'm pretty new to this too so I hope someone corrects me where I'm wrong!
      Yeah the chords in a certain scale are set because you have a limited amount of notes within the scale and if you change one or two notes too a note that is within the scale you basically just end up with an inverted chord. So lets say you are playing D minor - D F A and change the D to a C you end up with F major in second inversion C F A.
      Usually when someone only says minor scale, and not harmonic or melodic scale they are referring to the natural minor.
      Every chord in a scale may be set, but you can do whatever you want if it sounds good. You can borrow the IV chord from D major if you are playing in D minor, you can use secondary dominants etc etc, but then you are using notes from outside the scale.
      I can recommend this site if you are trying to figure out what scale something is in and you know the notes used: www.scales-chords.com/scalefinder.php
      I can also recommend this great podcast- musicstudent101.com/ I usually listen to it on my way too and from work :)

    Thank you. Maybe next time, just play the chord progression first and then do all the talking over it. Saves time if you aren't that crazy about it.

      @@stefanguy Right I just watched it. First I'd like to say that although I am new to your channel, I really like what you do. But from my perspective, you should just play your song from the very second of the video with no talk at all, and let your audiance just enjoy the sound. Like in this kind ok video : czcams.com/video/CWhU0awom2c/video.html

      Thanks for the video. I got you. That was the plan for the last video after similar feedback from a number of people. I thought I’d add some music to put it into context but spoke over it to protect the music. I get so many people ripping my music. But going forward I’ll just play straight keys at the beginning.

    I think your voice is too loud and the voicings are to quiet. I mean your voice is important too since u explain the voicings but there are just too quiet, so if you turn your volume loud enough to hear the voicings your voice is ridiculously high. #whogetsthis?!
