Are you kidding me? The level of effort and time put into this video is insane. Wow. I wish I saw this video when I started out!
I agree!! So well done!
my thoughts exactly, great advice but it would take a lot of time (talent too) to be able to play that well.
This is the single most valuable piano tutorial video on CZcams. Believe when I say I have watched maybe hundreds by now with the top teachers and this beats out all of them.
Truth!
The value in this video is crazy! Really wished someone taught this to me in such a compact and easy way to understand, instead of having to figure this stuff out over the course of literal years. Great stuff!!
Thank you 🙏 I’m glad you found it useful! I think a lot of players spend a lot of time getting to know these types of things in a DIY way 😊
I agree so many great lessons smashed into one succinct video!
Same here!
Yes, I learned with Mark Almond many years ago, but it was on CDs and not so fast.
I love how you explain more advanced playing using language that a beginner can understand. You don’t assume that people already know a lot - you even explain what fifths and octaves are! - yet that doesn’t keep you from covering more complex things. It gives a beginner things to aspire to.
Genuinely, this is the best piano tutorial I have ever seen.
You filled the exact knowledge gap that's been in my mind for 12 years.
Many lessons, many tutorials, many hours. Never have I fully grasped the underlying logic to playing piano, nor did I know how to take my playing to the next level.
I can not believe quite how directly you hit the nail on the head with this tutorial.
The way you explained all this in one video with such clarity and simplicity has genuinely changed my life.
Can't thank you enough
I love people who are willing to share their knowledge. This eloquently summarized 20 minutes could replace 2 years of music school minus those quirky moments when I had to go back to catch up on what was said while I was laughing. Seeing the beefy texture of music was the highlight of my day....
I don't know how to thank you. This video answers so many questions in my mind. I really wanted to understand how music turns rich, why the same song can be played like a novice and like a maestro. This one video answers all questions, wow! It simplified music for me.❤
As a self taught pianist that plays mainly classical I think this will help me be more familiar with improvising as well.
Learn jazz for improv
1. Triads 0:29
2. Inversions 2:12
3. Bass Notes 5:00
4. Octaves or 5ths 7:45
5. 7th Chords 9:51
6. Extensions 11:20
7. Left Hand Patterns 12:53
8. Right Hand Patterns 17:40
Outstanding! This mght be the most informative video I have ever seen in You Tube! I have seen thousands over the last 15 years. This is like a magician finally revealing to you how the tricks are done, thank you.
My grandfather died a long time ago and left me his piano. It stayed at my sisters house for almost 20 yrs while her kids learned to play. My kids are now just starting out. And so am I. I was shocked at how easy it is to learn on your own, and I quickly got to what you called level 3, as it made the most sense to me (guitarist for 30 yrs). But then I got stuck. Now I have a new challenge to try out. Thank you for your video and explanation. So helpful.
I stumbled upon this and thought it will just be like many other such videos where everything starts super simple and then you get totally lost and get no value from it. But this was different, systematically, step by step, things you can try. Thanks a lot for very good education.
Thank RCM for having much more progressive levels compared to others like ABRSM
Thank you. This is a great lesson and very helpful. Any chance you would consider a short follow up video demonstrating these techniques if we are singing and playing chords in the right hand instead of melody notes? Thanks again.
Finally I see how to play 9th’s and 11’s! No one ever explained that before! This is such a valuable tutorial! Many thanks for your time and talent.
I love how you demonstrate examples of the concepts you teach and other use-cases for them. This is a very well produced tutorial.
Great job on this video. An amazing amount of work went into doing this. One thing to point out. The extensions are called 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths because that implies there is a 7th in the chord. If there is no 7th, you would call them a 2nd, 4th, or 6th. I know in theory they are very similar, but if I see a C9 chord, I know to include a Bb. If I see a Cadd2, I know there is no 7th in the chord.
Ahh...thanks for reminding me why they are 9th, 11th, 13th or 2nd, 4th and 6th 😊
I ran into explaining this in a lesson once and had forgotten myself the reason why. 😂
I'm sorry, but what in the world is Cadd2?
'-'
@@dr.rajarshiraha6627It is just adding a 2nd to a chord. There are different ways of writing it as far as notation goes. So the C chord would have the notes CDEG.

As a complete beginner this was eye opening and extremely inspirational! Great info and examples with perfect editing. Pure gold! Thank you
Thank you so much for the quality of the video you putting out there. It's amazing the way you break things through and transform "complicated" stuff into easy one. I'm glad YT leads me to your channel.
Have a good day, and please keep up.
This might be my favourite video of yours so far but all of them are brilliant. I bought a digital piano 3 weeks ago and content like yours helps me see the light and the end of the tunnel. I’ve consumed so much content like this my knowledge far outweighs my ability but it’s helped me form a road map to follow. Thank you. 😊
Bro. The content value. The creative design. The amount of “valuetainment” in this video is setting high standards. It’s crazy. You must have a degree in music, video editing, story telling, and a bunch of other things. Great job.
I love this! Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video! I can’t tell you how much you’ve helped me (and others, I’m sure). So, again, thank you!
Incredible video! You have the right words to describe lots of things I have noticed but wasn't able to put into words. Keep doing this amazing job! We appreciate it!
Wow. such a simple way to explain complex information.
Great job. You teach such a volume of music quickly that others take hours and make it hard and confusing.
Such clarity.
Thanks.
I discovered your channel only recently and I really enjoy your videos. Always a pleasure to see your reactions on other learners and giving some tips too.
I've been doing online lessons since September 2022 and im really enjoying them. I've feel that learned a lot within that time too. I've recently started grade 1 music book this month and it isn't too bad really. Hope I keep improving and move up the grades. It's very exciting!
I can't believe that this is a free lesson. Thank you so much.
I love this video, currently struggling how to playing chord without felt empty.
This video is what I needed, keep it up man!
This is brilliant. I learned each level individually in songs. But never have been able to ‘see’ it’s mapped out so simple this way. Now I have a roadmap in my brain! I like it that you identify them as ‘level’. I can see which one to improve and move up to, or even spiced up and mixed them up. I am always flustered and lost when it comes to improvisation. Thanks!
i will be honest with you i have watched so many videos on piano and music theory, this is by FARRRRRRRRR the most valuable video i have watched. Thank you so much i love you for this. The thing i appreciated the most was you showing real examples where these methods were used, from current music to classical music, oh and the last part was the perfect example. thanks so much again.
OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I started Piano a couples of months ago, and since then I've been struggling with that. I couldn't understand what to do with the chords because triads doesn't always fit. I NEEDED that video!!!
That video was sooooooo helpful. Brilliantly clear and well explained. Equal to the best I’ve seen on you tube for piano. Keep up the amazing work!
What an absolutely fantastic video, 10/10! Great job! ❤
Thank you for this incredible video. It explains a lot of information in a very precise way. I learned so much within this video. Thank you!
This video is awesome! Now I get it and can see where I’m heading. Thank you making it all so clear. It’s a beautifully made and edited and clearly a huge amount of care and thought went into making it so simple and easy to understand. Huge thank you.
It also makes it clear why you need to get so fluent at every scale so you can bounce around effortlessly between them.
This guy deserves way way way more than 44.4k subs! His video on this was amazing, I appreciate how much time he spent on one video! Respect!
That's probably only because he has a funny accent.😁
I'm a newby but my heart is totaly sold out to learning so Thank You so much.
Amazing amazing learning video. Thank you Matthew 🎉
very tasteful example of all the levels in the end
awesome breakdown of everything, much appreciated!

You are such a legend in educating piano 🎹 ❤️ i have learnt alot in such a short time video. Thank you so much sir!
as a beginner, wow ty so much. this was the best, most rich video I’ve seen on this topic.
Much grateful for this. This vid made my goal more vivid.❤
Amazing video!! I have been wanting to understand how to properly play chords and melody at the same time, and this sets it out so well. Thank you! 🙂
Top content!! Thanks for your effort and knowledge!
Thank you so much for this video! Super helpful
Awesome video, that is a great progression of complexity and very well explained.
This is very informative. I wanted to learn how to play piano/chords since high school. Having no teacher can be frustrating, so I learnt just a little to nothing, but this is really informative and is making me find my old keyboard in the storage room and want to restart.
What an incredible amount of information explained beautifully. Wow this was a lot of work!!!
What a genious video! As a guitar player and a beginner at piano I'm amazed with how you were able to divide the long journey on piano like this. Congratulations, SuperB job!
Same here.
Yes, certainly one of the best tutorials I have seen. It is clear that you have put a lot of thought and creativity into this tutorial so thank you. ❤ Absolutely love the way you brought all of the levels together to play, a wonderful rendition of fix you, which is one of my wife’s favourite songs. 🙏🙏🙏
This is incredible and super super useful, thank you so much!
Thanks Ali! I have your book and attended your annual planning workshop and I found them both very useful so I return the thanks to you for your work! 😊
Great podcast!
I've been playing piano and bass for years🎹🎸🎶, but I still learned a lot from your musical podcast.
I only planned to listen for a couple of minutes, but you were so clear, insightful, and energetic that I ended up listening to the whole lesson.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
By far, one of the best piano "tutorials" out there. This was more of a lesson. I really appreciate this!
This is a brilliant video. Thank you for sharing your knowledge! Didn't play at the piano yet, about to buy one, but this is still great to watch and learn from your video.
Great video Matthew! I am learning a great deal. Keep up the great work. 💯
Brilliant! Thank you!
Excellent content, excellent finale , thank you 😊 definitely subscribed .
Thanks for this great video. So much detail and like the way it's in levels. I teach piano to beginners and will use this!
I was blind and and now I see! Thank you so much--You have done an amazing job!🦋
I love the humor and smooth pace of this film
certainly one of the best tutorial, answer exactly my problems. 20 mins fly by so quickly , thank you very much sir !!
Thank you so much for explaining how the keys work without much knowledge, i already feel more confident with the piano by knowing what i know now❤
Well done. You explained very well. Thank You very much
this videos was amazing and very informativ, thank you so much for the content you make!
This was incredibly informative. Thank you Matthew. Subscribed.
Absolutely amazing lesson! Thank you!
This really helped me out. I couldn’t hear pop piano covers and figure out how they sounded so “full” and complete. You building up the levels and different components made me see clearly on how I could improve past triad + inversions in the LH and the melody in the right hand or for accompanying, 1-5 shells/octaves in the LH and triads + inversions in the RH. I didn’t know about the whole: incorporating the melody into the RH with chords. That’s so cool and I can finally see it clearly! :))
Just amazing! Great info very condensed. This is a masterclass! Thanks
Matthew you are awesome and amazing. The contents of this video is truly taking me to the next level of play. You have a special gift of teaching and knowing what to teach. Now subscribed. Thank you
It's so good an explanaition. Thanks, man!
This is a whole piano course in one video... Thank you!!
Thank you for a wonderful video. As a child piano player who gave it up at age 11 after 5 years in conservatory 54 years ago, I'm now just learning all over again as I have forgotten everything and can't remember to read music as I also learnt in solfage. Your video has made a lot of sense, and I'll definitely be following your channel. Well done 👏 keep up the great work 😀👌
Thank you very much for this video, i was searching for several week someone or something to explain me why some guys play chords like that, and now I understand!
THIS is great content! Thanks for that!!
Awesome man! Keep it rolling.
To see it presented in this graduated way is superb. Really great lesson. Thank-you for sharing
Great video. Never learned it like this, adds a lot to the way I play immediately.
This will help my playing in church! Thank you for this video. God bless you.
PLEASE!!!!! keep making videos like this, and plz make a video on how to figure out arpeggio patterns
Dude you answered all my questions as a newbie. This is a package!
Amazing video, as a self taught pianist this was eyeopening as I somehow figured out most of the levels on my own but never saw the whole picture of how they evolved and can be extended
This was just amazing! I am very much a beginner when it comes to piano (currently at a Level 2, struggling to get to 3 :D) and this video answers so many questions that I had - like how playing an entire song (playing both chords and the melody) and accompanying for someone singing differ. It also emphasises this creative element of it all - describing what kind of an effect each new "level" allows to achieve and that it is actually for the performer to decide which ones they see fit. I absolutely love it and I am sure I will be coming back many times as my piano skills progress. :)
This was really fun! Thank you for sharing!
Brilliant. I compose piano music, so was looking to see if I'm on the right track. Very helpful, thank you.
Maximum effort of teaching right there! New subscriber here. Thank you very much.
Thank you! Very helpful for arrangements 🙏🏽
Video suggestion: breaking down Patrik Pietschmann's arranging style
No problem! Thanks for the suggestion, il check out Patrik 😊
Thank you so much for the brilliant educational video!
That's what I'm talking about
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Great stuff, thanks a bunch!
Wow, amazing tutorial, Matthew! ❤❤❤👏👏👏🙏🙏🙏
Excelent explained, greatly mastered. Thanks 🙏
Super practical tips, thanks!
I just volunteered to teach a basic- intermediate class at a local school for an elective grades 7-12. I chose music to rebuild the kids post Hurricane Dorian /covid which came back to back for us here in the Abaco Islands of the Bahamas.
This video is amazing!!! I will give it to the kids at the end if they want to keep going as it really gives a total overview in a nutshell.
Would love to see a simple song thats worldly recognized like Amazing Grace with all 8 levels applied like how you did for cold plays song.
This was beyond brilliant thank you.
Absolutely great video
This is information packed! Thank you!
What a super helpful consise video ! You are a brilliant teacher. Thank you
thanks a lot for this video! amazing job!
thanks 🙂 I am learning piano but i wanted to know why I was learning scales (and chords) now it makes sence 👍👍👍
Thanks a ton!!!
Awesome!
That was such a great tutorial!
