In this video we look at a Summer Walker R&B chord progression. I had “Girls Need Love” on repeat all day every day when it dropped back in 2018. It’s such a dope track, from its beat, to its lyrics, vocal arrangement and of course its chords...

That C#7 is the chord that makes this progression a winner!
100%
gives that minor iii turning to III7 vibe
I agree
Just asking out of curiosity, why C#7 and not C#min7, since we are in the key of F#min?
@@shepherd7583 C#7 is borrowed from the minor harmonic scale, in search for a dominant chord

Stefan Guy.... you are the man. Every chord gave me a mini heart attack like wooooooo
Haha! Glad you liked it brother!!! 🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾🙌🏾
Bro I'm a guitarist hahah, but you teach so well and I like your vibes too!
Im a guitarist also and I also watch a lot of piano tutorial videos because they just explain more
Yh thats true, I think some guitarists dont learn enough theory, and pianists are the best to teach us that, because every note they play is so visible and they know exactly what they're doing, sometimes we play chords but we have no idea what they are, or why they work...
Thank you brother! Appreciate it man. Glad the lessons are transferable!
I would view that Fdim7 as a simple passing chord. Don’t think too deeply into it. Just remember you can precede and chord with a diminished 7 a half step below or a half above
Or it could certainly be viewed as a V7b9 chord into a 1minor. Although it’s not in the key. You can precede any chord with a dominant chord a perfect fifth above. That 5-1 relationship can be used to get to any chord
@@SG-ig2eu minor II - V - I
ParsevalMusic merry Christmas! Thanks for replying. But if this is a 2-5-1 in F# minor, then where is the G#half diminished chord. And now that I think about it. This chord progression really looks like a IVmajor9-V6(not dominant)-vi minor. Using a secondary dominant chord C# to precede the vi minor chord

great video! will definitely use this :)(probably in a different key)
Thanks Wes! I rarely play in F#minor myself - still quite like it though
Using these as soon as possible. Awesome Vid !
Thanks brother! 🙌🏾
Its a basic minor (Aeolian) (F#m/AM Key) progression. 6-7-V7-1, 4-2-V7-1 (as you spelled it). Now if this were in fact a C# dominant, then the Vdominant here stresses the fact that f# is the home, and the V being dominant would be a C#7 borrowed from the Ionian mode of f# (parallel major). But since as you stated theres an F in the bass this transforms the chord to an F-7(9). Now it could beecome a chord borrowed from the parallel F# Lydian rendering it as a natural VII -7 rather than a flat one (the reason you rightly recognized it as a sharpened VII) (E theoratically becomes E#, but in practice an Fm-7). But i think ot just easier to say that the scale becomes a harmonic minor scale with that VII chord.
So the final progression should read
VIM7(9) - VI I6 - bvii-7 - i-7 ••• iv-7 - ii-7(b5) - bvii-7 - i-7.
The Key is f#m/AM and the v degree is replaced by the F# Lydian or Harmonic minor VII⁰ 7th(9) chord-- brigtening the mood of the piece (by adding a #4 to the scale).
Major and 7th chords are the base for best cool vibes 🔝
100%, love my 7ths
Nice progression. May I suggest that rather than naming the chords, how about writing the notes for both the bass (left hand) and the treble (right hand) for each chord set. In that way, you would also assist those whose music theory is still at the lowest level.
Another banger!
Thanks brother!!!
Great tutorial, thanks brother!

just came through your channel by luck and im loving it!. never had any Piano lessons before, im below the beginner if you wanna call it🤣. how do you recommend i should start.
Good stuff, liking these videos. Hope you don't mind me pointing out one small detail - in the C#7 chord there is no F, the note in question is an E sharp, even though enharmonically the same as F.
Thanks man! And not at all brother I appreciate it! If you’ve got the time could you explain why it’s called Esharp in this instance? For myself and anyone that stumbles across this.
@@stefanguy A chord triad is based on the 1-3-5 of the related scale. The 3 of C# is an E# as you just follow the letters of the alphabet whilst applying the key signature (1-C#, 2-D#, 3-E#, 4-F#, etc). A scale should have one of each note letter so you couldn't call that note an F whilst being in the key of F# minor. If calling that chord Db7 then the 3 would indeed be an F. A chord with the 3 in the bass is called a first inversion, 5 in the bass is a second inversion. Hope that helps and keep up the banging chord sequences.
@@duncfunk2998 Exactly. And also, in the key of F# minor, when using either the harmonic or melodic minor scale, the 7th note of the scale is an E sharp. It's spelled that way (in stead of F) because it's a leading note, which strongly suggests to our ear that the next note should be F# sharp, i.e. the first note of the scale. This comes from a few centuries of Western music tradition, and while it's essentially the same note (same sounding pitch on piano & guitar) it's spelled this way to make sight reading easier. If you for some reason have to read a piece of music for the first time in rehearsal the day of the performance for example, it will be confusing to see two consecutive notes that are not the same, written on the same line.
Great video! Did you learn all of the major and minor scales to create blended scale-chords?
Pls correct me if I'm wrong here but I believe for the 3rd chord in the progression the scale basically jumps from f# natural minor to harmonic minor
Shane Thompson 100% nice catch dude, he really confused me with his explanation but this makes a lot of sense
@@andrewcarrillo4814 I see it but if it was in harmonic minor, wouldn't the F key be considered E#?
Ok den... We been waitin on anotha 1..
Everything he said till 0:40 sounded like he was rapping
Can you play this in any finger position
hi ! how we call progression this in the system number of chords progression ( like the 7-3-6) pls ????
1st four chords were 6,7,5,1 and 2nd time around was 4,2,5,1
Lots of embellishments and inversions tho
The G#m7b5 is actually a G#dim7. The correct notes on that one are G# B D F . Anyways, nice progression!
Thanks bro. It’s def a G#m7b5 though bro. G#m7 is G#, B, D#, F#... the D# (the 5) is flattened to D (flat 5) this chord is also known as a half-diminished chord. For it to be fully diminished the 7th must be flattened also.
@@stefanguy The notes in that chord at 1:34 are G# B D F. I would call that fully diminished, not half.
czcams.com/video/1l8vIAvAerE/video.html
Indeed you are correct but I don’t play what I call a G#m7b5 until 3.25 though? What you described is both the 5 and 7 being flattened like I said in the comment above however I play g#, b, d, f# (not f).... the chord I think you may be referring to is when I played the Fdim7? Which was nearer to the timestamp you quoted.
@@stefanguy Hey man, I don't want to be right. All I'm saying is that you got the chord wrong. It is a G#dim7 and not a G#m7b5. When you play the progression try the G#dim7 instead. It makes more sense to play this chord fully diminished cause it actually gives the chord more "meaning" and makes the progression even a little bit more dark and sad. I'm also sure that, as you confirmed, the second to last chord is a Fdim. In your video you actually played a (inverted C#7) instead. Anyways, I really enjoy your videos, so sorry for being such a smart ass :) Keep up the good work!
Crazy... after da 1st 3 chords i paused it.. I heard da 2-5-1 after da 1st 3 chords...
Had 2 c how it sound..
Haha you have the ear! what do you prefer? Going to the #7 or the 5?
This is probably a stupid question, but couldn’t you just refer to the C#7 as C#7 1st inversion with doubled 3rd and 5th ?
Hey where did you go my guy!
Back soon my brother! Thanks for checking in 🙏🏾!!!
This is amazing thanks. Something I'm trying to get my head around, you stated that the C#7 was a dominant chord but considering it's a minor scale (F#m) wouldn't this 5th chord of the scale be a minor chord whereas the 7th chord in the scale ( E7) would be the dominant chord?
gslgtc 7th chord is diminished not dominant, traditionally
In traditional theory, it's often taught that a minor scale gives you a minor chord built on the fifth scale degree. (C minor's 5th being a G minor chord). In jazz theory and modern music in general, the minor five is somewhat less popular and is often substituted for the Dominant 5 chord (which is a borrowed chord from the Relative Major).
@@andrewcarrillo4814 That's in the Major scale, not the minor scale which this is in.
Is that C♯7/F not an Fdim7 also?
question Why don't you use a Full size keyboard?(76/88)
I’m in a new apartment and it’s easier to film a smaller keyboard. The overhead shot. Filming my larger keyboard would require moving things and additional setup every time. This setup is permanent so I can hit a couple of buttons and get to recording. The largest i own is still only 49 though. 61 is the largest i’ve owned, yet to get a full size. Maybe one day when I have the space!
