    Some great ways to avoid moving into the path of a train are to STOP, LOOK, AND LISTEN. These trains don't hop off the tracks and start hunting people down!

    Not a train or crossing problem. It’s a people problem not exercising caution and applying safety around trains. People are in way too much of a hurry and drive distracted. This is a sad situation but it will happen again and again because people don’t learn and honestly many use risky behaviors behind the wheel. Many don’t know how to be a defensive driver nor do they care because they feel it won’t happen to them!

    there is no way to prevent car crashes, airplane crashes, train crashes. Nobody can stop Amtrak from being a passenger service. These people were trying to beat the train instead of heeding the lights, horn, and their own brain which tells them to not cross over the tracks when a train is coming.

  • @larry4111
    @larry4111 Před 14 dny +7

    Irresponsible reporting. The last guy said he sees the crossing and says to himself, "What if the arms don't come down?" Unless that is what happened here. and it doesn't appear to be the case, why is that even in the report?

    • @thud9797
      @thud9797 Před 14 dny +2

      And that attitude is part of the problem. Like if the arms don't come down it's not my fault. People don't even look for a train any more. I've sat by the crossing by me where high speed trains go by and watched drivers crossing and it's amazing to me that most just drive across the tracks with windows rolled up and without even a glance to check for an approaching train. This sort of nonchalant attitude is what gets you killed.

      @@thud9797 Exactly. I live in South Florida and eagerly watched the progress of Brightline. What made the news? Not the fact that a private company was successful in building an intercity rail line in a fraction of the time than the government would (and that it's been wildly successful beyond anyone's predictions), but that people and cars were getting in its way. Even now I watch videos about California HSR, for example, and all the CZcams NIMBYS and naysayers comment about "Brightline killing people." No, trains don't kill people. People kill people.

    Another unfortunate tragic fatality. Here we go again, blame the railroad for these fatal incidents. The railroad is in full compliance with the Federal Railroad Administration recommendations for protecting that crossing with red lights and gates. The census of traffic that uses a crossing at grade determines how that crossing is to be protected by the Federal Railroad Administration, either by red only cross bucks (with a stop sign), or lights alone, or a combination of red lights and gates. As a retired locomotive engineer and Operation Lifesaver presenter, (a program that teaches the public on grade crossing safety) it often is the case that most of the grade crossing incidents happen when crossings are protected by red lights and gates. "See tracks, think Train" is one of the OS slogans. Amtrak travels up to 79MPH a speed that doesn't allow much time to attempt for a motorist to get out of the way. The FRA will investigate, make a report and announce their findings via the media.

    Any and all drivers ed classes includes a video of a car/train crash. There are multiple tracks here, and this may have been complicated by the presence of a police car and tow truck on the opposite side, but the gates will break away with the slightest hit from a car.

      No. Two older people with a young child are going to execute an emergency evacuation in 15 seconds or so? I doubt it. What's if a whole family is in there? The only answer is not drive onto the tracks unless it is clear and you can get to the other side and obviously this driver failed to do that.

    Sincere Condolences to those lost and impacted by this tragedy. I hope we can all learn from this.
    As a driver, you should be looking beyond the tracks before you even start to cross them. If there is an obstruction preventing you from clearing the tracks, do not pass the RR Crossing signal, even if the gates are not activated. It is also the law not to stop on railroad tracks (NY Vehicle & Traffic (VAT) CHAPTER 71, TITLE 7, ARTICLE 32, Section 1202 (h)).
    I know, in this case, that is a sharp right turn, but there is still a full car length prior to entering the crossing to make that quick assessment. This is the driver's responsibility. These accidents are totally preventable.

      Not from the area, but looking at the crossing on Street View. Are the traffic lights coordinated with the crossing gates? Maybe they could consider gates at the end of the turn lanes onto that street.
      I used to live in San Diego, and driving to the airport there involves going onto city streets and across a very busy grade crossing and then a right turn onto a very busy street, with there often being traffic backups. I always tried to avoid being stopped on the tracks, but it was still a kinda scary situation.

    • @mikew.to1
      @mikew.to1 Před 13 dny

      I know a lot of people have a habit of seeing crossing flashing signals the same as a yellow caution signal. Enter the crossing quickly because a gate or red light will follow. They've all taken the same driving course that tells them both are stop do not enter the crossing, but they seem to think they'll get lucky again and take a chance. Doing that when there are other people in the car who might not want to rely on luck, is not just selfish but criminal minded. In those cases I don't 'feel' for the driver, but I do their passengers. Tax payers spend hundreds of thousands to prevent dangers but there is always some who want to still take a chance.

    This crossing seems to have several city design features missing. Travelling northbound there isn't a separate reserved turning lane so that a car waiting for a safe crossing will block though traffic. On the other side crossing the tracks, it is restricted to a single through lane so that any vehicle stopped for a traffic stop blocks all through traffic and can trap a vehicle between gates. If a car attempts to back up it is exposed to through traffic going northbound, The intersection is definitely a accident waiting to happen. there should be separate lanes on both sides such that there will be an escape path. If someone knew the area, and saw the car stopped on Felton, should not have attempted to cross seeing there was no safe way around the stopped car. There is no shoulder for a stopped car on Felton and there should be. If you look at the crossing between the gates it has space for 2 lanes but immediately after the gates on the city property on Felton, it abruptly becomes single lane with no shoulder or merge. Even on google maps you can see a broken gate on that side lying on the ground from a similar accident. That's tells you this is not an unusual occurrence. Had there been a turning lane on River, the light sequence should be a red stop for that lane once the red flashing crossing lights activates or at least switch to short amber. Without any turning lanes, all traffic must stop once a train signal starts flashing. The flashing train crossing lights is a 'STOP' signal (not the gates) and for any cars within the gates to clear. There is also no markings showing the no stopping under any circumstance on fellton or the crossing. Also there is a pedestrian crossing and lights that goes nowhere, there is no crossing onto Felton for pedestrians even though there is a sidewalk, just none over the crossing.

    All automobile-train collisions are the result of a motorist doing something dumb. I do not feel sorry for these dumb people. However, I do have concern for the train crew that has to watch this happening and are helpless to do anything. Psychological problems show up in engineers at the throttle after a car pulls in front of a locomotive. Simple physics going on here. A car might weigh 2000 lbs, one ton. The mile long moving train weighs thousands of tons and might require a mile to stop. Guess who wins ,,,
