  • You might know Custom Robo Arena on Nintendo DS, or Custom Robo on Nintendo Gamecube, but you might not have been aware of the original game, Custom Robo, being released only in Japan, and on Nintendo 64.
This English translation patch for the game, produced by the ROM translation group, Star Trinket, was originally released in 2017, making the 1999 game finally available to play for English readers.
Star Trinket did a stellar job, with only one or two instances where there were issues; this is a brilliant translation. It works well for the game that developer, Noise produced those many years ago.
These games are really fun, fasting moving 3D arena brawlers, with a specific system in place for things like projectiles, traps, and movement.

One of the few RPGs where you play as a basic school kid, and you don't end up saving the planet from being destroyed.

Custom Robo is a fantastic series. Played through this prior to this translation and loved every bit of it even still.

I'm hoping we get to see a translation of V2 come out in the future. I'm going to play the Gamecube version soon.

These overworld sprites and environments might be the best 2D graphics I've ever seen in an N64 game.

They're actually great! There could have been way more N64 RPGs with this style. Oh well.

The system really was the Saturn's polar opposite.

This is the first ROM Hacked where it's just a translation patch, eh? I was thinking it would always be fan games.

Robokichi is implied to be a former Dread member. He left (I believe) when their main plan became to kidnap a young girl for her nanomachines.
Absolutely loved this game, especially the counterplay in customizing. If it had a post-game letting you use illegal parts like some of the other games, it'd be primo. But the shonen sports/battle story is perfectly short and sweet.

Agreed. And that exposition on Robokichi makes a lot of sense. Kidnapping children can be a real deal breaker for some.

    The Game is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bought a Japanese n64, the game and it’s sequel. I have beaten the first game, but I had to SUFFER, by scanning the dialogue with my phone (Google translate). The camera function in Google translate helps, but YOUR ARM😥😥😥😥😥😥

We can only hope that there's fans out there translating the script as we speak

Did you actually not know about Synaptic Drive? It was a wholesale failure anyway.

I looked into it once I initially saw your comment. Interesting to see a game continuing the style of gameplay, but the visuals look awful. Might download it if it's on sale for under 10 bucks.
