he's most likely been an actual good parent at some point in the 40'000 years he's walked the earth
it could be that his Immortality and massively long life caused him to loose the portion of his humanity that granted you the paternal protectiveness and nurturing care needed to raise and father children. my guess is that seeing your own offspring being born either dying horribly or growing old and decaying while you remain the same over and over again for thousands of years would cause any man to see that having sons just wasn't worth it even then the Emperor created the primarchs to be his generals not his sons they were tools and war machines not men of the people or his heirs.
As we all know, the best safewards against the corrupting temptation of chaos is a caring father figure
He was the best dad, it was those chaos gods that were the issue they were a bad influence on his kids. His primarchs just got mixed in with the wrong crowd there's nothing he could do đ€Ł.

Ollanius Pius was living presumably the last of his many, MANY lives on Calth when the Word Bearers hit it, and he had a flashback to THE BATTLE OF FUCKING VERDUN. Olly P is a perpetual. As far as I know, Olly was actually a perpetual before even the Emperor was born. The genetic mother of the Primarchs, Erda, said that Ollanius Pius was the oldest of their number, always a religious soul, content to live a normal life, never actually given to ambition even approaching that of the Emperor.
The Emperor is really a very interesting character, because he's essentially the exaggeration of the best and the worst humanity has to offer. I still think that the short story where he meets the last priest on Earth to be one of the most well-written character studies written in sci-fi.

Wouldn't be the first time someone lost the instruction manual to something and forgot a bunch of features, only to have someone who knew all the features show them some neat tricks.

@Cian Abroad it was his first major visit as the actual Emperor and not as some other Identity. This was a big, public show with his personal landing craft and an absolutely MASSIVE show. And he also had to simultaneously put himself as the Omnissiah so that the Mechanicum would accept him without question. So a grand gesture and fancy speech and the healing of a machine by accessing its long forgotten self-repair would go a long way to cementing his claims. Which it did.

They repeatedly contradict established codex lore, contradict each other, and many times contradict themselves. They are not 100% reliable sources, and BL even says this in repeated interviews.

I think it had more to do with whom they were speaking about. The Emperor of mankind believed in education, science and progress. The Templin Institute fulfills many of what he desired for his people to know. Knowledge and truth and the ability to question. It would be in the interest of the Emperor that such a small and merely insignificant transmission be allowed to go uninterrupted.

Seeing this, hearing the story and seeing it all go down brings to mind an image that has stuck with me for years. It was a simple painting, just a bit of fan art, but it struck such a cord with me that I still to this day praise it as one of the most tragic moments ever put to canvas.
It depicts the Emperor, standing upon one of the many balconies of the Imperial palace, cradling a baby in his arms. Itâs just a child, sleeping peacefully, not knowing that one day he would set the galaxy ablaze.
âOne day,â he says,âYou and I shall do great things.â
The irony is that the imperial creed is just the writings of Lorgar. The same beliefs that kicked off the entire Heresy. That is one reason I love 40k lore so much. The Imperium has literally come full circle.

I love how the whole song swifts to show how powerful the Emperor is when he tore Horus apart at the orbit of holly Terra, and the Chaos Gods feared him.
I really want the emperor to awaken and see what his imperium is become. I think heâd be so disgusted heâd probably burn it all to the ground the start anew.
There is actually a bit in lore where a few thousand people got the image of the Emperor weeping and each of them also instinctively knew that he was not weeping over his own torture at the hands of the golden throne but that he was actually weeping for all humanity.
It's better to start anew than to correct every little mistake

The Emperor had allowed them to love Him, and to believe He loved them in return. he had not. His primarchs were weapons, that was all.
Though his power was immense, perhaps greater than it had been before He ascended, the Emperor's humanity was all but gone. He could no longer mask His thoughts with a human face. The Emperor's light was blinding, all encompassing, but finally - finally - Guilliman had seen it as a whole. The being he had thought of as a father could hide nothing from him.
The Emperor did not love His sons. They were things. Guilliman, all his brothers, were nothing but a means to an end.

The Primarchs are genetic constructs using the Emperor's own DNA as a template. At best they're clones not his biological descendants.

If the emperor ever woke up from his death bed, the first thing he would do is to organise a defense agaisnt the ruinous powers then complete his golden throne project. Because he knows they are afraid of what knowledge he has, the golden throne alone is enough of a reason for them to decide to corrupt the son of the emperor, which wasn't an easy task.

The thing I love with the Emperor and the Imperium is the story is similar to hero/RPG game stories but instead of the story being about the MC who levels up until he's essentially a God and builds an empire, it's about how that empire gets on after the MC is gone.
