      Lepidus: the dude noone remembered, gave ceasar the last dinner before his death, had a triumph for doing nothing, was honored with a golden statue on the forum for (not at this time) beating the pompeius-pirat and Mark Antonius (he didnt), until the senat realiced it, sat on his fat ass in africa surrounded by 16 legions, 6 were loyal to octavian, lived a happy live in luxus, while everyone made a civilwar and than crossed to sicily to support octavian fights against pompeius-pirat, actual beaten the pompeius-pirat by watching agrippa and octavian doing his job, took 10 legions of pompius-pirat under his own command and THAN octavian formed up with his army in front of his army-camp for fearing a betrayal by the more-powerfull lepidus and his legions run to octavian, he was pardoned by octavian (after all he did nothing) and lived to his death a happy luxurious live under lockdown.
      in some sense, he had a great live and was not killed like most powerfull people in these times. lost potencial? probably, but he knew, he couldnt win, so he didnt fought. what? his son was killed by octavian later? pfff only after the son of Lepidus created 2 kids with the daughter of octavian's daugther. (yep thereby octavian killed his step-grandson) and the female line of Lepidus created the actual sane and more popular line of octavians, who were killed of by Nero and his bitch-wife and stoped to unite earlier with clodius (like it was set up by octavian/augustus) by bitch-Messalina.
      in some sense, this lepidus-octavian connection is the true, sane, good line of roman emperors.

    While La benis is all fun of a pun, Titus Labienus Chadus Maximus was a mad lad much better than Marcus Antonius. Even Gaius Iulius Caesar Chadus Optimus considered him as a great friend.

    • @someorclad9738
      @someorclad9738 Před 4 lety +6

      Who was Labienus actually? I confess my knowledge on Romans beside Caesar and Trajan is shitty, so I don't know much about that guy. All I know about him is that he's a pretty solid general. But that's about it really.

    • @mel577
      @mel577 Před 4 lety +51

      Agreed. Labienus helped Caesar win his most of his battles. He was a great general and in the end, betraying Caesar was our of principle rather than personal.
      Let's not forget Caesar violated Roman law and pulled a Sulla, the very same dictator who almost had a young, innocent Caesar killed out of spite.

      @Association of Free People He asked for permission? Damn. Now that's a bro right there. They may be enemies on principles, but bros are still bros, and no senatorial bullshit is gonna change that. No wonder Caesar valued him greatly. A friend like that is a good one, even if on opposing sides.

    • @someorclad9738
      @someorclad9738 Před 4 lety +8

      @Association of Free People Since you know more about him, why did he stayed loyal to the Republic? I mean, him and Caesar has obviously been through a lot together, and the war in Gaul is very much hellish. Those kind of straits should have really cemented their friendship, above and beyond the call of brohood so to say. It just struck me as odd that he would stick to a corrupt Republic instead of his friend. Did he had any special devotion to the Republic?

He was instrumental in a lot of Caesar's earlier victories, and the only guy who had a good record against Caesar when he fought, it was really the incompetents he was surrounded by that made him lose. Caesar actually wanted to be emperor but only the population denied or voiced their displeasure about it.
    The event where Marcus Antonius found the crown wasn't far from the end of the Civil War and all the time while Caesar was back, he haven't greeted the plebians that supported him yet so when Marcus Antonius got back to Caesar, he brought the crown with him.
    It was recorded somewhere that when Caesar saw the golden olive crown, he din't say anything much but told one of his slave to hold on to it behind him. Then he went out to the balcony and waved at the crowd. The crowds were cheering and Caesar had an idea to test the "water" (idea) of crowning himself emperor. With the crowd still going wild looking Caesar in the face, he took the crown and hovered it above his head, signalling he's donning it. However, the crowd went silent. When it took it out, the roar erupted again. Caesar thought for a while then tried it again. The same thing happened and for the third time he did it, it happened again and this gave Caesar a clear sign who places the crown back on the cushion, sent the slave to the back and then addressed the crowd properly.
    When he retreated back into the balcony, his aides, especially Marcus Antonius was furious on why did Caesar not declare himself emperor when he had the chance to but Caesar simply answered "The people did not want it and I shall not go against the people".
