Disney has been going all-out with Marvel TV shows on Disney+ over the past few years - with seemingly dwindling interest from audience. Their latest show “Echo” is a spinoff of one of those shows, centred around a character who was kind of in it!
Echo definitely raises some questions. Like how did Kingpin survive that? Why are we rooting for a character that puts her family and innocent people’s lives in danger? What are her powers exactly? Did she just speedrun Kingpin’s therapy?
To answer all these questions, check out the pitch meeting that led to Echo!

I really love what Disney is doing to support artist like Ryan. I can't even guess how many millions of dollars and man hours went into making this entire series just so Ryan could create a 4 minute video. Really generous of them.
What's truly amazing is that they didn't try to make something that might have some secondary function or revenue potential. That's dedication.
well said. he creates a 4 minute video that is more entertaining than what a billion dollar company could make
Amen

Echo has strong "kill all the henchmen but spare the big bad because killing him would make her no better than him" vibes
*because he needs to be in future products
Except that she already tried to kill him by shooting him in the goddam face.
@@Sorakeyblademaster37 Did someone say "marketing opportunity"?!
@@LucianDevine Yeah, but she's a hero now 🤷♂
exactly like blue beetle... huh.
I can't believe there was no mention of the fact that echo's original powers are that she can mirror anyone's fighting style, but the genius writers thought that was "lame" so they decided to give her "indigenous ancestor glowy-hand" powers instead.
Maybe slightly more interesting than a Taskmaster clone
😂😂😂 truth here!
@@TakeshiYoung Alas, no.
@@TakeshiYoung ok, but taskmaster is legit cool and having a taskmaster like hero show would be really ineresting.
@@TakeshiYoung Generic glowy powers with origins about Native American stereotypes is far worse than being a Taskmaster clone. Especially when the Taskmaster from Black Widow got her copying skills from a computer in her helmet and not from a natural talent. And if anyone's confused about the pronouns I used for Taskmaster, spoiler alert: Taskmaster is not Tony Masters but Dreykov's daughter. And you wouldn't get that from promotional materials because the Captain America stuntman Andy Lister wore the suit for most of the movie to preserve the twist about Taskmaster being a woman. They wanted us to think a character who came from a place that came from a place that trained female assassins was a man so that we would make misogynistic outbursts at a movie when we were already watching it for the badass ladies. Not a good twist to preserve in a Black Widow movie.
the "very handy foot" throwaway line deserves more screen time 😂
Yesssss 😂😂
Totally unexpected and well delivered. Almost knocked me out of my chair.
Sometimes the english language is simply amazing
In Made in Abyss the English subtitles say 'a very handy hand' but it's just a coincidence. There is nothing weird about the sentence in Japanese. You know, other than it being about a robot boy's mechanical hand.

It's also extremely accurate. Most psychologists are nut jobs. It's why they got into psychology in the first place. They start out trying to fix themselves, but eventually decide you are the problem.
I didn't know what to expect from the show, but my bingo card definitely didn't include "Kingpin gets hit by magical therapy beam and runs for mayor in a genuine attempt to help people".
These pitch meetings are the best thing to come out of the MCU in years.
My favorite line “Weaponized Therapy is tight” - you hit it out of the ballpark again Ryan - pure genius
'Sometimes it's gonna look like they're hitting each other' is so funny for no reason
It's funny because it's true
How's the choreography so bad
It's weird because some of that fight was really incredible but then other times it look like they filmed the rehearsal and put that up instead by accident. Thankfully it's really only bad during the bit Ryan shows in this video, most of the it was great.
Probably because it looked more like a dance routine than actual fighting 🤷🏽

One of my favorite jokes that Ryan does is when Writer Guy explains something to Producer Guy by saying “it says so right here.”
“That seems to be what I’ve written” like he was ripping acid during the writing process and doesn’t remember any of it lol
Right on top with "so the movie can happen"
@@SoupSultan well that’s what the paper says sir 📝
If Disney ever wanted to get better than what they have been lately, Ryan has literally made multiple instructional 4-minute videos that tell them step by step what to fix.
You give them way too much credit for self-reflection.
it 's not as easy you know also even if he is still gonna do these
They don't care about creating good content. All they care about are profits and shoving political agendas down everyone's throats.
Disney is so far in the dumps they might as well just use ChatGPT to write their scripts so we'd get the best of both worlds, i.e. much better shows but still plenty of material for Ryan to poke fun at.
He literally doesn’t though. This is the problem with many fans of these types of videos, they think it’s actual criticism, not merely making jokes, partially about perceived flaws. Criticism tells you the error, and how to fix it. Pitch meeting does that only in scenarios where the problem is braindead in the first place, like the WW84 bodyswap.

"A very handy-foot" ....Frickin love this dude !
I think the worst thing about how stupid Kingpin's defeat is here is like...he'd ALREADY faced and come to terms with his haunted past, in Netflix' Daredevil. He'd faced and accepted killing his father to protect his mother. He didn't regret it, and he'd accepted it had made him into the man he was. He wasn't afraid of it. So it just came off like such a lazy regressive copout Echo 'broke' him all of a sudden by dredging up a past he'd already buried.
but hes a man and a man is trash and shes a girl and therefore has to win.
oh vincent donofrio, what happened to you, man. i hope the paycheck was worth it
Gotta make her that important/relevant/impactful enough to gauge his old scars. Word 🤷♀️
Thank you for reminding me of that.
The thing is it's a pain that he still holds on to. The 'acceptance' he has is still a cover he uses to not have to truly confront it (especially given his anger issues still persisting). So Echo was able to remove that cover and force him to truly face his trauma; not hold on to the empowerment he got from killing him but to truly come to grips with the helplessness, fear and pain he had to endure.
But you see, that is an alternate reality Kingpin that didn't do that,so rehashing it is ok.
In fact, redoing all successful plot threads with the multiverse excuse should be done as often as possible.
"that seems to be what I've written here..."
Ryan's comedic delivery has just gotten and better
Pitch Meetings are WAY more entertaining than the actual presentation. Saved me hundreds, if not thousands! Thank you, Ryan!

Yes, Echo has always been a Taskmaster ripoff

From what I understand the show itself doesn't set it up much better.
@mikespearman1414 It really doesn't, but honestly I don't blame the show. It was really promising, with some really interesting characters, but Disney only gave them 6 episodes to work with and everything felt crammed. Just 1 or 2 more episodes and it wouldn't have felt so rushed.
@@TheFiddleFaddle I second this and would like to add that I thought the performances were generally pretty solid (especially Fisk, of course). She really only fully discovers her powers in the final episode, definitely crammed.

@07m07 yes.
I can't believe these pitch meeting skits are still going!
I'm no industry insider, and this might've been pointed out by commenters before, but something I find interesting about the premise for the Pitch Meeting series is that we occasionally get a glimpse into what a studio executive who understands good business _and_ good storytelling can really contribute by asking good questions and performing a real, valuable service for potential viewers by coming between creatives and the actual means of producing their ideas.
The studio exec has somewhat become a stereotype, caricature, and even bogeyman that so often gets blamed for stifling really good ideas from creatives like writers and directors...and this in many cases is probably accurate. However, that leaves me curious about those times when someone higher up, who's seen decades of good and bad ideas come and go, has and uses the authority to question or outright shoot down something terrible and spare us from it reaching the screen. I'm sure it happens.
As far as I’m concerned, this is precisely how the real pitch meeting at Marvel happened; word for word
yep, canon
Real? You just watched CCTV footage of the studio..
Nah, I don't think Disney even bothered here. The director had made a couple of movies with average to bad score, the actress had never acted before...
No, but I would have wanted to hear the meeting where Bob Iger told them the show was so bad they had to cut out so much really terrible content the show got 3 episodes shorter. That would had been fun to watch. And yeah, it must have been really bad when this is the 5 "good" episodes.

@@milesbismarck That bow guy from that movie released 13 years ago.
In the comics, after Wilson Fisk killed Maya's father, William, the Kingpin adopted her. He had her trained as his assassin and was later sent to prove her skillset against Daredevil. She kept a white hand printed on her face, nodding to the bloody hand print her father left behind when he died. With regard to her Echo identity, Maya was such a brilliant warrior, she had photographic reflexes, similar to Taskmaster. This made her a great copy of her opponents, which made her similar to an echo. She took on the Echo identity in her formative arc and began her career as a former enemy, lover and then ally to Matt Murdock.
Taloa asks Maya to forget the death and destruction of her past, and the lives she also took as a gangster. Whether it be William dying due to Kingpin's schemes, Maya shooting Fisk in the eye to set herself free, or the pain of blaming herself for Taloa's accident, Taloa begs her daughter to let go of this hate. Instead, Taloa makes it clear the Choctaw people are healers, and that they will always "echo through her."
