I wanna know what kind of rental car will fit 6 peeps, a dog and all that luggage lol. They sure dont travel light.
We just rented a mid size car last month and got a Suburban for just two people. 🤦♀️
There are large cargo type vans now that have 3 row seating + room in back for luggage .👍🏻
They are PCS'ing with the Navy. It's likely the extra luggage is due to wanting to take as much stuff as possible while DoD ships their household goods
rent a uhaul for a one way trip.

why didn't they call the Navy for help ??? My husband was AF for 21 yrs....we could always call for help...the military does this, especially for families.
It mentions that the military is putting them in a hotel. Pay attention.

Holiday week, no one had cars.

Uber with all that stuff? They’d need several Ubers just to get everyone and everything there, but all the cars are booked out. You don’t have to rent in person, you can do it online and even over the phone!

You dont actual pay for a rental car until you return it.
If the rental agency promised them a car (by accepting their reservations) then they should deliver. They need to pay for all out of pocket expenses.
