  • We are doing a refresh on a 1975 6hp Evinrude (6504R) outboard. We will rebuild on the carb, clean, sand, paint.
    In this video we attempt to start the motor.
    The end goal is to make it run well, look good, and ready for many more years on the water.

    Take a 20 volt drill put a Chuck in it that'll hold a socket put a socket on the flywheel nut it makes life a lot easier cranking these for the first time. Changing out the impeller on these can be a real booger bear you got to pull the power head to drop the lower unit.

    I remember those days. I didn't have a cute little tub to put the bottom in. I chiseled the top out of 55-gallon drum and put some wood at the top for my makeshift transom. I hit my knuckles plenty working with a chisel. Did the same thing with a 25 horsepower Evinrude. Evinrude was mounted on a 13 foot runabout boat. We would do that when we had been out in the ocean here at the beach. interesting times a long time ago.

      If you don't bust your knuckles, are you really wrenching? LOL. That sounds like a pain. WE got lucky. I had a bucket I wanted to use but it was too big. This one just fit. We were trying hard to test it out.

      @BackOutside That would add up real fast. That isn't bad at all for two years of maintenance. Love hearing about equipment still putting in work.

    Those plastic tanks have horrible blade valves so if you ever noticed one swelling crack the lid on it

    The fuel tank have to be level, gravity, fed

    • @Gearheadcentral
      @Gearheadcentral  Před rokem +1

      A motor on an outboard is always above the fuel tank. The outboard has a fuel pump.

    • @Everythingoutdoors902
      @Everythingoutdoors902 Před rokem

      The fuel tank sits on the floor of the boat below motor height which would never work as a gravity fed system the motor has a fuel pump on it which pups the fuel into the carb as needed it is made up of rubber membranes there is about 20 layers to the fuel pump.

    definitely not enough water

    • @Gearheadcentral
      @Gearheadcentral  Před rokem +1

      We did actually keep the water above the water intake. Would have like to have it deeper but that was the best we could do, with what we had.

      The water is a solid 3-4 inches above the intake don't you see the water pumping out when the motor is running? Lol what's your reasoning for not enough water?
