I think the best blue with black is a deep royal blue. Probably 40 years ago I saw a very fashionable friend of my mom's wearing a dark royal blue and black color block sheath dress with black sheer hose and high heels. Stunning. I don't like dark navy with black, the blue has to be lightened up for it to work.
VB's outfit is amazing. I agree that when the navy is very dark, it just doesn't work.
One morning, when I was living in NYC, I literally got dressed for an event in the dark. I didn't realize until I arrived at the event that I wore a black dress, black heels and NAVY tights. I was horrified and had a terrible time. I thought of taking off the tights, but it was freezing. I now keep all my navy and black completely separate. I write B or N in Sharpie on the label of my tights. Never again, lol.
That’s happened to me, too. Fortunately, there was a pharmacy in the building that sold some tights, so I bought a black pair and changed. I still sometimes end up with one black and one navy sock, I wish they would make navy a little lighter so I can tell the difference, before I go out!

Personally I love this color combination but when I do it I usually wear a thin heel strappy in teal. It looks great and I always get compliments. The small pop of teal just balances the deep colors
I prefer a brighter navy with black and that trench is stunning!

Yes I too have always liked brown and black together. It’s quite chic.
Navy and black is one of my favorite combos - I especially loved Dakota Fanning’s outfit. I love dark colors together - brown and black as well, charcoal and pine green, etc. Dark color combos - in cool tones, my preference - feel mysterious and soothing to me.
I do the same! I particularly like black n browns together.
And I also like Dakota's color combo. I'm thinking that the coat material, up close, might have provided enough contrast.

I think in cases where they go together, the blue has some reflective power; so that light is helping to make it work possibly.
I love the combination of navy and black. It’s a little moody, mysterious and seductive. But use the two colors in classic or sophisticated clothes ...maybe not French.
The shining navy jacket is beautiful in contrast with the matte black. Magical.
Also, I agree that there should be a greater contrast between the navy and the black. I personally look better in a bright navy than a dark navy because of my coloring.

I think the navy trench coat goes beautifully with the black trousers because of the finish or sheen of the coat. I like it very much.

I think black is a diva and navy blue is a diva and both on one stage can be difficult. And for me it is also difficult to combine both colours. With jeans it works for me. Maybe it has to do with the material of denim.

I too grew up thi king not to wear black and blue, but the tips about contrast in colour as well as texture has made me rethink this.
I love that trench coat and love it with both the dress and the trousers. For me, it lends itself to a bit of a mysterious look and would be magnificent in a subdued light in the evening. Great video!
One of my favourite outfits is black jeans and navy/indigo cotton sweater. (Both are very slightly naturally "washed".)
An artist friend commented that it triggered a pleasant "vibration". I certainly feel wonderful wearing the combination.
I loved the dress and dark blue jacket. The material made enough of a contrast.
At the risk of sending too many comments.....lol....I think the reason your black dress didn't work with your navy silk trench is because your (exposed) legs break up the color scheme, if you know what I mean. The long black trousers provided a column of black so the jacket was highlighted. Also, the safari style of the jacket lends itself better to trousers than a dress, as despite having a dressy sheen, is casual in style. My 2 cents worth!

The electric/cobalt/royal blue with black was very popular in the 80s. I remember wearing a dress in that blue with a black blazer and accessories. I agree, Pippa’s outfit works. You have such a great eye, I doubt I’ll disagree on any of your yesses or nos.

I can’t wear black at all, it drains all my color. I wish I could tho. I just quit it all together. I don’t have anything black even shoes or accessories
I finally bought the navy silk trench coat from Lilysilk. It looks a feels beautiful! There is nothing like it in the shops. Fantastic for spring, summer and travel, so lightweight and it will elevate any outfit! I am surprised they haven't made it in more colours.

I’m so happy you are talking about this subject. I like the blue jeans with black top. Even thought some of the outfits do work for some reason the 2 colors are too much for the eye. I do wear somethings the 2 combo but like you said you have to really look at the combo. Now make sense why I don’t reach to often for this combo . Also green and navy I have a hard time with the combo for some reasons .

Yes navy and black seem to work when there is a greater contrast of colour. There is a better balance when you wear the short blue silk jacket with the black top and trousers; it looks purposefully put together whereas when you wear a blue jacket with the black dress the jacket looks like an afterthought; there is no ‘flow’ to the outfit. I like Victoria Beckham’’s outfit too except I don’t like the bag. I can’t see it properly but it looks like she is carrying her collection of vinyl records! Her frame is very petite and I don’t think the bag works for her. Might have better carrying a small briefcase if she is carrying work items. Thanks for a very interesting video. DONE.

I think the dress would work better if black tights were worn - I think nude tights almost give an extra 'colour' to the outfit. Navy and black work well but only those two colours together maybe?
I actually did like your black dress with the blue trench coat. I liked the different textures and the blue looked good over the black dress.

I agree that the navy should be lighter and not so dark that it’s almost black. I also think the ratio of black to navy is important so that one doesn’t overwhelm the other. For example in your outfit there is a large portion of black with the top and slacks and the navy trench is almost an accent.
I love Pippa's and VB's 🌼 Pippa's vibrant blue is fantastic and illuminates her face and makes the black jacket work well 🌸 I think the material of VB's pants also lightens the heaviness pants of a different material could have had on the overall look🌺

I have been wearing black sweaters, shirts and blazers with jeans for forever. I love the look and think it is very sophisticated. There is always a good contrast, even with the darker wash jeans. In terms of other clothing pieces, it really depends on the contrast between the blue and the black, so I think we should think about pairing different shades of blue (not just navy) with different textures with black. Sometimes an outfit that is just so-so may be lacking in both contrast and proportion. IMHO, proportion is a critical element of sophisticated style.

Done! This presentation was quite informative and made me think about this particular colour combination. I typically go for black and brown, however I really loved the LS shirt with the jeans, your last outfit and VB’s outfit. I think I realized that my taste ( pleasing to my eye) with this particular colour combination runs toward the lower end of contrasts. Subtle but definite contrast. My least favourites were the brighter navy and the dark almost black navy. As always you make me think about my choices 😊

I love the silk trench with the black pants and top because it has a very chic, edgy, rock n roll type look, especially worn open. The dress is severe and conservative so doesn't play well w the trench. I enjoyed this video!

Done! Thank you! Interesting topic as always! I find that other than the texture of the cloth - that you mention - the tone of the black and blue cloth also plays a part. There are warmer and cooler blacks and blues. This becomes obvious while combining gray colors, but more subtle with blacks. Staying on one side of the color spectrum (cool or warm) usually helps making a combination more harmonious.
Lovely discussion. I do personally think some shades of blue works solely with lighter colors . I also think it depends on individual skin color or shade.

It is interesting to see that the same trench coat doesn't quite go with a black dress but goes with a black shirt and trousers. I think it might be the complete column of black color balances out the trench coat more than the shorter dress. Thanks for another great video. :)
The silk trench worked with the pants outfit because the fabric textures were complementary. You mentioned lighter navy blues going better with black; I like dark navy with charcoal. Also, I was thinking that your red tweed jacket would look fantastic dressed down or up with black or navy.

Hello! I do not usually wear navy blue and black. Except for jeans, so this was helpful. I never knew how to style it. I liked the electric blue dress with the black coat, it popped out. Also the black and blue outfit with the bag that brought it together. Your outfit at the end with sheen looked good. The other outfits I wouldn't personally do.
I have just bought a pair of navy blue trousers and teamed it with a black camisole and a Lilysilk short sleeved navy blouse. The lace on the camisole peeking out of the blouse looked much better than I would have thought. For my eye it is either an accent of black/navy or reflective quality of the pieces of how this works - light plays a big part in colour perception for me. Very good topic I like to banish my preconceptions.

For me, combining colors evokes a feel or mood. If I want a formal or business feel, I may shy away from certain color combinations that feel casual. If I am looking for something playful or casual I will steer away from the color combinations I associate with a more serious mood.

You made me travel back to my teenage years. I loved wearing black and blue. My favorite outfits were with a black jeans and an electric blue sweater for casual wear and my wool dark blue sweater with a white shirt and black trousers for something more formal.
However is not an easy combination because as you showed us, a very dark blue can look boring and monotonous.

Marie-Anne, I have always liked navy and black together but I do think it’s the contrast of the colors with style and fabric of the garments contributing to if it goes together or no, as well. The trench coat ( which was stunning) looked ok with the dress but fabulous with the pants! I think the contrast of the long line of black from the pants helped with that. The juxtaposition of the amount of black and navy plays a great deal into why it goes together so well in some outfits versus others, in my opinion.

DONE. Navy blue is my new neutral. Not that I've not worn blue or navy blue in the past. There was just more black in my wardrobe before. I like that navy blue is seasonless, especially when used with white. My first Lilysilk purchase included a sleeveless button down navy silk blouse and a sleeveless navy silk shirt dress. I think what I have learned from you in previous videos, that this video highlights for me, is that texture and sheen make a difference.
In my opinion it did not work with the dress because of the nude of the legs. Wearing black opaque tights would make the outfit similar to rhe one with the black trousers. Love your FCL channel.

I think it is because of the shade of navy and the sheen of the trench coat. I have always thought black and navy together is very tricky, so I usually avoid wearing it together
I went to a wedding years ago, I wore a dress that was a black and lighter shade of navy, I also,wore a necklace that had both those colors entwined together , with black heels, I received many compliments, I just think you can wear black and blue as long as it’s not a very dark navy

I agreed with you on all of these. I think the last one, with the silk jacket, works beautiful when you move it shimmers and both navy and purple were flashing, especially around the back, so it isn’t straight navy. It’s more complicated and interesting.

You definitely need a bigger contrast between the blue and black. Some shades of "navy" blue are so close to black you don't notice until you're very close. My mum always says it's better to have a contrast than a bad match when it comes to colours. A cobalt or peacock/electric blue would be a very good contrast as you can see the shape of both garments.
I agree, it has to be a very obvious blue.
Interesting video Marie-Anne. Great discussion. I think black and navy can work well together, especially if there is a contrast in the finishes or textures of the fabrics e.g. shiny and matt or silk and denim. 💖
