Different music on tetris?? 1.0? Japanese? Slightly different art and numbers? Amazing.
Wonderful.
Beautiful.
I remember back in the day of gba flash carts discovering this version of Tetris quite by accident, downloaded a version of the rom and everything seemed normal til I got to the music select screen. At the time was shocked by it, but later found myself wanting to go back to it, by this point the more common dump floating around was the 1.1 version so it litterally took more digging to find at the time.

I’ve had a one of these copies of Tetris for years and never knew why they were different.
If its in good condition you might be able to get a lot for it
@@ayhuz how much does it go for?
@@jaimeg309 I wouldn’t know but collectors are know too pay a hefty price for something if it’s in high condition
I didn’t know for years that the Tetris “theme” was exclusive for gameboy and didn’t know why all other versions had music from the nutcracker and stuff
I've never even played the gb version but that song is still what I associate with the game
Nor did I till now.
Post-2006, it's actually mandatory that that song be in every version of Tetris.
Same here honestly
To me the dance of the sugar plumb fairy is still my A type music of choice, though I'm also fond of Tetris DX's A type track I'll admit Korobeiniki has grown on my though over the years especially the metal, big band and surf rock covers.
If dankpods and ashens had a kid, and that kid somehow survived, it'd be this guy

That is exactly him

so, is Techmoans the grandpa or the weird uncle?

That's a pretty fun catch
I just looked at my copy at my house. I can’t believe it’s actually the Minuet Tetris. I have the big box version with the link cable. This game was actually a gift from a friend a few years ago and he paid $5 for it at a flea market from what I understand. Also, we’re in Houston, TX... I wouldn’t have known about it had I not saw this video. Thanks!
I got a copy of TMNT street fighters for NES for $3 in Houston at a thrift shop with the box recently. Just thought it was cool until I googled it, sold it on eBay for $350 right after

Reminds me of trying to find the mega drive version of moonwalk that has thriller still intact :P
There was actually a prototype which had Thriller. Someone hacked it to the final revision. You can find the download link of ROM in this video of me showing it: czcams.com/video/iEv8qEYBR5g/video.html
Can't believe I learned about this just now.

The " at the end of the " dubbing really had me laughing. :)

I like how you've been wearing the watch you recently refurbished, just makes me happy whenever I notice you're wearing it!
Another way to differentiate them is if it automatically goes to the title screen after 2 seconds instead of 8 seconds, it's the Minuet version.
Tetris minuet is actually quite common in asia especially southeast asia because back then we import the games from Japan and usually it's a release version 1.0
i have the ROM of tetris for when i get bored in my phone, i never understood why it had different music lol
@@binjed-f5b try edgeemu ...
@@binjed-f5b there's TONS of websites with hundreds of thousands of roms on them. I'm not gonna tell you them. Instead I'll teach you to fish, instead of giving you a fish.
Go to Google, and google whatever game it is you want, followed by "rom". So like "Tetris minuet rom". Or hey, you wanna play tomb raider? Then do "tomb raider ps1 rom". It's really really really simple. Then to play it you just open it in an emulator. If you can open a word file in Word, then you can use an emulator. It's that simple.
In today's video, Elliot shows Super Mario World is not the only game he is bad at.
I found it by accident years ago when I downloaded a Tetris rom and wondered why the music was different.
The A Type song we all know is called Korobeniki.
You forget to mention that the game progression system is different as well
Is there a reason as to why the music was changed? It wasn't like first copies of Sonic Spinball at all?
What about those first copies of Sonic Spinball? Never heard of it before.
@@sarinns The first copies of Sonic Spinball had a title screen and Game Over music based on the Sonic 1 and 2 themes, but they changed it quickly because Sega didn't have the rights to use Nakamura's music.
@@axylorionfredrick wow that's not the kind of thing you heard everyday
@@sarinns depends what nerdy circles you follow; it has actually been known in most sonic dev communities for like 20 years, not to mention the people who got their hands on physical copies when it launched lol
@@AGwolf2097 well, I guess you're right
I don't exactly follow a circle of nerds homies either so that's why I didn't knew the existence of that version/censure.
But anyways still pretty interesting to me because those kind of thing changes the way you look/play a game since the first time, at least that's why I think about it. :0
I genuinely thought I knew everything about Tetris, and somehow this escaped me for all these years! Thanks for sharing this man. Now I need to find myself a copy!
Great fun video Elliot :-)

I have one of these! I found out they existed a few years back when I bought a random copy in a lot of games. I kept it becuase of how rare it is.
Fascinating stuff. That 2 player Tetris segment brought back memories of playing with friends on a long coach journey coming back from a school trip.
Man I really wish they had this song as a music type option, it's really nice!
That NES pad looks like it has been services with a Doc's Controller Repair kit. I bought mine from K-Mart in the early '90s. Also bought their NES cleaning kit. Fun fact: the cases for both doubled as NES game Pak cases. :)

I'm just here for your amazing Tetris playing skills.
When I saw the start of this video, I immediately knew what the music would sound like because for some reason I have this version of the rom on my Bitt Boy. Now we have confirmation that this is the Japanese exclusive. Pretty cool stuff
You know, I consider myself a pretty hardcore Nintendo trivia addict and have read just about every book on the subject that I can find, and I never knew this bit of trivia. This is awesome.
Love the videos dude, I must say the dubbing to swap letter and number was a little terrifying for a moment.
I think the familiar theme has more tension whilst somehow upbeat. This 1.0 version is almost too chilled for Tetris; I think it would more suit the inside of someone's house in Link's Awakening or Oracle Of Ages/Seasons.
Nice tune and epic find. 👌
when you realize you have that tetris version-
( its teared apart some years ago xD )
( I still have that cartridge )
Another way to tell if it’s Minuet version is by looking at the “Made in Japan” text at the bottom of the front sticker, the words should neatly be inside the red lines of the background art, where as the 1.1 version the red lines will pass through the letters!
Back in my day on the N64 we called the long thin hole. The "pim hole" no idea why just came up and from that moment on it was always called that :)
I actually downloaded a ROM of Tetris on the Game Boy once a while back, and it happened to be the 1.0 version. I was very confused about the music, that's how I learned about the different versions lol
3 - 4 years ago was still a good time to snag these copies of eBay from Japan in bulk. Shipping was dirt cheap at that point. About every ninth to tenth copy was the minuet version back then. I know because I bookmarked every auction from a bulk seller and sorted the copies by label. So its definitely more then 25k copies, because the Japanese version of Tetris sold multiple millions. Only few people knew about the label differences back then and everyone was just checking the prod. facility imprint, which appears only rarely on product photos. There are more obvious label difference that can be gleamed (with some good faith) from eBay thumbnail photos. What turns out to be really rare is the boxed Tetris - Tsushin (= "communication" or "cable") version. It is Tetris (always with the minuet version; it was a launch product) in a bigger box including the link cable, because that was not bundled with Japanese Gameboys, but Nintendo still wanted to underline the social/multiplayer aspect of its small screen handheld. Its product code is "DMG-TRAT" not "DMG-TRA" and I have seen about 10 copies in 5 years on eBay, but I do not follow these things as closely as I did years ago.
But can you do multiplayer between the A and non-A versions!?
Your videos are so good, thanks for the great content
God, I downloaded a ROM of Tetris to use with an emulator at least ten or so years ago, and it was the 1.0 revision. I then got the 3DS release of Game Boy Tetris and wondered why that had the theme, not even considering that it could be a revisional difference. And then I found this video, where it was all answered. Thank you, Retro Future, for answering this godforsaken question I somehow couldn't find the answer to for over a decade.
Elliot i just bought this version because of your video!!! and because you describe how to see which version is from the sticker i found one for only 4 euros!!!! LOVED it man!!! Love your channel!!!
PS. I use Sendico (not for this game) often also because of you! Keep doing great videos mate! love from Greece :D
Nice macintosh floral shoppe t shirt looking fresh!
Do not blow into the cartridge! Use a pink eraser and rub the contacts with that to clean it first, and if still needed then use a contact cleaner made for cleaning these types of contacts. The moisture from your breath is what makes the cart work again, but it will destroy the contacts over time. This goes for all cartridges.
Love how excited you guys get.
hello elliot, I figured out...in the "normal" tetris version you get 1) a small rocket when you reach >100.000 points, 2) a slightly bigger one when you get >150.000 points and 3) the biggest one when you get >200.000 points. in the 1.0 version of tetris you get rocket nr. 2) already with >100.000 points... mastering level 9-5 gets you the buran shuttle ;)
i love how exciting it is but then the music is just cute 8 bit
I had a dream we hung out at a museum together.... WHAT DOES THIS MEAN??
I remember watching gameplay of this version of tetris but was so confused why music A was different
Interesting, I've had a copy for years now that I bought in a GB game lot auction (there was like 2/3 copies of tetris in it). I wondered about the different music but never really looked into it.
lmao I'm a Tetris collector and just checked my CIB DMG Gameboy Tetris from japan and its the 'Minuet Version' and there are no hyphens in between the Bullet-Proof
Just jumped on Sendico and found one for 880yen! Look forward to checking that out :D
You are going to make me go downstairs and open up my big box of Gameboy games and check my Japanese version of Tetris now. LOL
I've always wondered why my sticker on my tetris cartridge was different form the others. It still works although it's very yellowed out
Fun fact, those who speedrun Tetris on the GameBoy prefer the 1.0 version since certain animations are slightly faster.
Elliot:a version of tetris you never heard
Me:it's just tetris no big deal
I tried 2 weeks ago to connect two DMG with cable at first time... I was wondering in childhood (now I'm 37) how tetris looks on 2 players, but no one had another one DMG to try. Mario and Luigi - that so cute.
When you watch this video and have 7 of these sitting around and didn't realize they were worth anything at all.
Whenever i downloaded the tetris rom for my Raspberry pi, i used to think i downloaded a fake one. Never knew about the 0.0 version
Everybody gangster till the Japanese kid pulls out his rare copy of Tetris and the music starts hitting different
I hope that "hovering into your seat" bit at the start was an intentional nod to my favorite monty python sketch, in which case, good taste 👍
if not, I'm watching too many old BBC serials...
I'm glad you made this vid! I have a boot leg copy of Tetris with the rarer music on it. At first I was mad about it but now I see that it's cool in its own way.
I found another version of the 1.0 “Minuet” version, it has the number “22” stamped in the corner rather than 23, but the spire touches the end of “all” like the later carts, instead of in between the them, like yours.
welp, these prices are gonna spike now ;)
I actually have this version of the game, it came with a DMG I got on eBay
lol i literally saw him not sit but like flew back to his chair so fucking funny
Sounds pretty much like a song from pokemon red. Maybe cycling road or another route
Same stamping method on n64 as well; an A after the number is 1.1, and a B would be 1.2
Imagine if someone had this copy and didn't know it was rare so they threw it away / sold it for a really cheap price thinking it was a bootleg
I mean, it's an iconic, crazy common game. Imagine if everybody had Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt cartridges, but there was some mostly identical label rare subset of them where the World 1-2 theme was different
Your little "woosh" sound in your intro animation freaks my dogs out every time I watch your videos
When I started to emulate gameboy I found hard to find the normal version of tetris all of them where this version
My Cartridge is a confirmed Minuet Version, however the spiral doesn't go between the two L's and the tip touches the (C) Copyright symbol. The stamped number is 22 with no following letter. I have opened the Cartridge and the PCB is marked DMG-AAA-01 and does appear to be original. Furthermore, the copyright logo screen has no "-" between "Bullet Proof", also identifying it as a v1.0.
My friend had one of those and I thought it was the strangest thing ever that it had different music, had no idea why it had different music though.
The Mario Vs Luigi bit is really cool! Also really enjoy the different music. For v1.1 I always prefer song 2 personally. I wish i knew how it felt to use a nes controller to play it but sadly last time i played i had to emulate it and use touch screen controls, but I still got good with that and beat the game eventually. lol Really interesting video! :)
Ive been here from pretty close to the start and i cant believe you got 300k have fun dude :D
Edit: cant wait for you to get quarter of a million subs :D
All the Pokémon rom hacks and Tetris variations, I would love some more homebrew or fan made romhacks on a physical cartridge.
That explains why my tetris rom has a different song than what I remember.
The one everybody wants is the Sega version which I believe the Last Gamer owns a copy (maybe 2) only between 4-8 were made!
Just play it on an emulator. Or on the Mega Drive Mini. No need to spend £10,000 on a copy or something like that. And anyway it's just tetris, it's not that remarkable. Play one of the other dozens of versions of it
awesome great content man I actually just uploaded a reshelling of my GBC because you inspired me!!!!
means alot that you hearted my comment thankyou
It sounds like im on my way to a Pokémon gym battle
I tell others that while collecting NES games check for non-rev A carts as they are the original and most likely the version you remember as a child.
So now you have two of the 25k versions wow!
this is pretty cool! i know the NES and GB versions have different music, but obviously had no idea about this! i’m actually a fan of the B-type music, nice and relaxing. might be the C-type. no idea at the mo!
Insane I picked up 3 boxed copies recently but never checked which version. And I almost gifted one away due to not knowing the true value. Without following your channel and watching your regular content, I would never have ever known. Much appreciated, Elliott ❤️
I've actually known this version existed for a long time. or at least the rom.
I downloaded this version a long time ago and was surprised (and confused) that the bgm for Type A was completely different. I just came to the conclusion that its just exclusive to the japanese release. Turns out that i'm half right. And turns out that only a limited amount of them were released.
“When you think of Tetris, what’s the music that comes to mind?”
For me it’s the theme from the Macintosh version, mate.
Elliot: aaaw thats so anti climactic
Also Elliot: covering the crt just to show the captured footage on another screen in the corner.
Gotta love this channel
Tetris DX also had unique music compared to other Tetris versions.
2:48 I love the number to letter and sentence to number edit
That PVM is a great pairing with the SGB via the luma out of the SNES. Insanely clean video.
I always appreciate elliot bc it just seems like the dude sucks at videogames, and their his favorite hobby!!! Really inspiring to just have someone doing what they love.
Damn I’ve been trying to get a copy of one of these forever, still looking hopefully I’ll own a copy one day.
Here's one for sale in America on ebay. This is the item number. 274549938469
this reminded me of the Tengen Tetris vs Nintendo Tetris (both on NES, obviously), another semi-interesting tidbit of gaming trivia involivng Tetris
This is actually the only version of GB Tetris that I own. I bought the cartridge in Japan back in 2014 for 100 yen + tax. It was a steal, really glad I took it home.
Whoa, that dark grey DMG looks choice man
Congrats with the 300k subs! You deserve more and I'm sure they'll keep coming!
