Some are in it to milk the retro game market dry because they know there's tons of late 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s people that grew up on these games and want to relive them. Other want to make a profit obviously but also are willing to haggle a 5-10$ on a price especially if you are buying a couple games and in general fairly price their games.

The time to buy 'retro' in the USA was 10-15 years ago. 2005 to 2008 parents were getting rid of their kids stuff who went to college most of which would have been SNES to PS1 some times PS2, so a lot of this stuff was dirt cheap. However even by 2009 you already had rare older games that were asking for a larger price. I remember being shocked seeing a BOXED copy of Earthbound sitting on the very top of a cabinet near the ceiling at GameCrazy, and it was 120 dollars. Ever since the retro boom in 2012 you have all of these little independent stores selling the chinese stuff for a huge mark up including reproductions. Exactly, in The States you are paying the tax of store even being able to stocking the stuff you actually want and have it in front of you. So many of our meager regular pawn or hobby stores just don’t have the stock of golden physical games anymore. But I also know how expensive overhead is in 2023 and I’ve seen stores in major cities move standard N64s at $300*. They were amazing condition complete in box. But the crowd who actually buys there does so because it’s in front of them, and they just want assurance their shit will work. The rest of us just go to look to browse and occasionally grab stuff to stay in the owner’s good graces.

We are now paying hundreds for things we could've easily bought for around $5 in the early 2000’s, and getting tricked into buying counterfeit repros as originals. Don't dismiss the "elite gamer"'s concerns. there are valid ones.
I'm fine with emulation for most things, but actually, depending on the genre, and how competitive they are, software emulation often does have timing imperfections that don't happen on real hardware that can throw a game off.
I refuse to play fighting games on a software emulator unless the community is so dead that competitions aren't run.
FPGA Emulation reduces the risk of those imperfections, but it's still there, so FPGA emulation is acceptable in certain cases. Mostly dependent on how much testing has been done and the programmer's reputation and lengths they go to for accuracy.

That'll probably work on most older repros, but modern shell reproductions are pretty solid and some don't have any obvious indicators like this. In those cases, it's better to look for any inconsistencies with the label (miscut, wrong dimensions, poor print quality, etc.) or for the silkscreen Nintendo on the PCB. Obviously nothing beats just opening up the cart and having a look inside, though. A repro I have has no obvious indicators besides the slightly wrong dimensions of the label without opening it, and the differently colored shell that I got deliberately so it would never be presumed legit.

@@LunarShift I have a copy of Pokemon Sapphire that's not real, but it might be older. There are a few things that tell me it's fake:
      1. The ESRB logo is too thin.
      2. The Nintendo logo on the board is wrong.
      3. My legit DS games won't recognize it to transfer Pokemon off of.
Helping in this regard is the legit copy of FireRed that I have. Does all three of those things just fine. Also have a legit Emerald, but the label is scratched up so I can't compare it to that one.

      @rinceart Před 5 měsíci +1

@@LunarShift I don't know. I have yet to see a good repro cartridge, and as a collector, I see a lot of them.
The text on real ones are flatter and textured while the text on fake cartridges are deeper, narrower, and has no texture, and I am pretty sure this is still true today. I've just checked like 30 listings on Ali Express and every GBA game (100%) can still easily be identified as fake by this method.
Truth is: it would take little to know effort for the bootleggers to produce fake cartridges indistinguishable from the original ones, but they do not put the effort (thankfully). They still use the same crappy repro cases in 2024 as they did 5-10 years ago. So, combined with the imprinted number on the sticker, I don't see how can any knowledgeable person mistake a fake game for an original.
Hundreds of games had went through my hands and not one time I was fooled. It is actually not that difficult.

So they're really doing a good thing by making more copies to prevent these games from disappearing forever. Imagine if they didn't make copies of Mario kart advance, and then somehow all the millions of legit copies just randomly stopped working for some reason, then we'd have these "reproduction" carts.

In 2006, I picked up 18 NES games, complete in box for $180 from a mom & pop rental store that was still renting them out. Last week I sold 6 of them for $1500. It's sad to see them go, but 4 years ago I moved & they have just been sitting in boxes for this whole time. I figured it was time to get them to someone else who appreciated them as much as I used to... before the market popped entirely! I can always play the games on my SD NES cart on my OG hardware 😁

Man, I live here and as soon as I saw the bargain shop on your video preview I knew they’d got you. This place came into Jacksonville about 15 years ago and put almost all the other pawn shops out of business. Once they put them all out they raised the price on everything. The family that owns the shops are notorious for being rude to their customers and when they first started I found them trying to sell used lotion. These guys know what they’re doing but they cornered the market up until recently. Oh and you’re correct about how they do their pricing, not only that they will pull up items you try to sell them on eBay and look for the lowest every priced item that sold and then claim they can get it for that price so they’ll pay you far less.
The worst thing these guys do by far is they’ll drive an out to Wilmington to talk shit to the video game store down there for no other reason than to do it.

Pawn shops here in America don't seem so interested in dealing with old video games anymore, as far as I've seen (guns, yes, but their prices tend to be high). At one pawn shop, I was told that their boss didn't want old games dealt with at all. In another, they only had newer games, at unreasonable prices (which I even pointed out to them, when I saw a used Switch Lite with the price of a brand new one). But that limited edition SP you got... I am surprised by that price, it's lower than I thought it would be! I think maybe, _maybe_ the market for retro games here is finally starting to come down a bit, I've been noticing falling prices, lately, on certain things. Except Pokemon GameBoy games. You should come to NYC and check out the game stores here in Manhattan. Their prices for older consoles and games are outrageously high just like that second store you went to in this video. I am so irritated about the prices in these stores that I just use Chinese handhelds for retro gaming. It's still not enough though, because I seriously want the full nostalgic experience of retro gaming with the real devices but I can't afford those asshole high prices here.

At least you could try to give it back in our shop we also have no refund but when a customer comes and have a problem usually we give them a refund

The no price thing is also often because all they do now is check pricecharting. It's becoming a real problem. I even had a guy doing this at a Romanian fleamarket! Its becoming a joke. Why would anybody buy at pricecharting prices from a fleamarket or a pawn store?

You overlook the overhead for the store! Reflecting higher prices! eBay has no overhead expenses!

Welcome to game shopping in the US. The prices go off the chart (the charts being eBay sold and price charting) which are high AF anyways.

100% sure you knew it was a fake but bought it only for this video. You have waaay to much experience with gameboy to not have fallen for this. It's extremely obvious this mario kart was a fake...

and you're incredibly naive if you actually had to stop and think about that (and write a comment about it). of course he bought it for the video - he was holding it in the shop pointing out how it was fake and still bought it. it's informative for folks that don't know how to spot them - but pointing out they still work (mostly) and how much you're willing to spend on a clearly fake game. the fact that this went entirely over your head makes me want to point to the "no stupid people beyond this point" sign that was in the shop and then point you to the exit.

Honestly a shop should make an exception for a return for fake items sold as genuine
