- During the month of January, I only played Gameboy games...again!
It has been two years since my original Gameboy for a Month video and I decided to finally make a follow up to it, and this time around I'm living in Japan.
I'm planning on making more videos in this style so stick around if that interests you.

The simplicity of the game boy color really shines through in this day in age. Cool video!
Polished Crystal is my preferred way to play Gen 2. The Wonder Trading alone is just fun to do, and helps fill your Pokedex up without having to go manually hunt down everything. But in general, it's just a great hack. It's still Gen 2, but...better.
I never actually looked in detail at jp gameboy carts, and they look so good, specially the pokemon
I've gotten into collecting Japanese Gameboy games, partially because of their lower price and partially because the cartridge labels are just so much cooler. Link's Awakening is a great example of this. The international releases just have the logo on a plain background, but the Japanese version has a full illustration with all the major characters.

Thanks for the video! There’s nothing better than sifting through old Gameboy games. I don’t live in Japan, but I always get really excited when I see Japanese Gameboy titles at my local retro game stores here in the states. One of my favorite ones I’ve found in the wild is Bomber King Scenario 2.

We actually got that gator pinball game in the US as Revenge of the Gator. It came out like 9 months after the Gameboy got released in the US (6 months in Japan), so it feeling a bit primitive makes sense. Kirby's Pinball Land is easily my favorite of all the pinball video games. No, not just on GB. Period. Such a huge fan of how varied the boards are and all the stuff you get to do. I need to get around to putting more time into Pokemon Pinball, but Kirby's Pinball has a lot of nostalgia too.
Parodius is awesome, glad you enjoyed it.
Wario Land is easily my favorite of all the SML games, though SML1 does have the best music of the three.
Gen 1 and 2 Pokemon are both so hard to get back into. I really need to give them a better chance and forget about the physical special split. And what you said about looking at other people's Pokemon teams reminds me of grabbing copies of Final Fantasy 1-2 GBA and just seeing if I can figure out where in the game they are. It's just fun.

As a veteran pokemon player scine 99', I highly recommend Fire Red/Leaf Green for your gen 1 replay! The GBA remakes are waaay more than just a visual upgrade. Huge quality of life improvements, added post game content, items and abilities, and all the glitches and bugs are fixed that plagued the originals (the GBA versions have their own brand new exploits to explore haha). Not to mention you can trade all pokémon from GBA games all the way up to the Nintendo switch games. Oh, and avoid let's go Pikachu and Eevee like the plague 👍
@@EpocaDura I've been playing a hack of gen 2 called Pokemon Crystal Maeson for that. The creator added a bunch of new mechanics and redid the whole type chart.
Gen 3 is fun but still needs (in my opinion) the physical/special split, so I once again have to rely on hacks. Have yet to find one to work on solely though Pokemon Emerald Rogue is definitely one of the most unique ways to play Pokemon I've ever seen.
Keep one original Gameboy that’s sentimental, then get one for cheap to mod the crap out of! That’s what I did. Kept my DMG original and put it in a display case. Then I got a used Gameboy Color off eBay and opened it up / cleaned it. New shell, brighter bigger screen, usb-battery, audio amp, etc.
It’s weird how red and green let’s you do crazy stuff

Wario land was one of the last games I played on gameboy and I loved it so much such a great game.

Great video, looking forward to another on the Gameboy. I’ve only started collecting since last year, was mostly playing on the super gameboy, but then picked up a GBA and GBC. I have to say I really enjoy using my GBC and don’t plan to do an IPS mod.
As a funny coincidence I finalized payment on revenge of the gator today. I have to assume that’s the same game. I also picked up Pinball Dreams recently which is a cool game as well with great music.
This video reminds me that I should also get back to Wario Land and WL II soon. They’re seriously high quality games. 👍

@@supersambams lol, that’s the one. I think I happened to see a video on it a few weeks ago and forgot how much I liked pinball games. Now if I could get Jaki Crush without crazy shipping/delays from Japan that would be awesome.

@@supersambams OMG, revenge of the gator is a cool little game! Just got it today, cleaned the cart and gave it about 5 minutes. While I think the music is better in Pinball Dreams and there’s 3 boards, I think the gameplay and movement is better on gator. I like the multiple screens and the breakout clone at the top. 👍👍
Good video. One should know, about the gator pinball game, that it was released way before Pokemon Pinball or Kirby's Pinball Land. It might not look like much by comparison, but when it released it was probably the best pinball title on the system

@@supersambams you said you were afraid of messing up a gameboy while modding. Some GBA screen mods don't require soldering if you don't need brightness controls. Worth looking into. I know 3 guys (me and 2 others) who did just that.

It’s called Ojama kan! I know of one in Kyoto and one in Gifu. Not sure where else they are though!
@@supersambams Right, that was the name of it. Someone recommended that one before since I'm often visiting Nagoya, which is kind of close to Gifu.
Really wish they would do more with Wario instead of him being stuck in just smash and wario ware and more games like wario land and wario world feel like Nintendo is sleeping on a missed opportunity

I wish American stores had as many retro Games being sold around. I totally would have also done this challenge. I feel like japan still appreciates these Games. For curiosity sake are the prices ridiculous or fair?
Compared to American prices these days, they are insanely fair (usually)

Ya the prices for older titles are definitely off the charts. Maybe if you live in Japan you can find older games at a reasonable price but here in the states forgot it. I turned to repros to keep by wallet safe. As for modeling your game boy It’s not that difficult, there are countless videos on CZcams that walk you thur it, I even did mine. Since you live in Japan you probably can pick up a spare Game boy for really cheap. In the videos I’ve seen of the stores there they seem to be falling from the shelves.

That red version is likely in the state of item and pokemon swap? Not sure if it was fixed in JP red though
Alternatively it's a save corruption of sorts where it saved correctly enough but didn't save the proper pokemon data,though I can't remember if it would give a error and state loading a previous save.
Wario Land was my first gameboy game... just an awesome game

I saw a video about japan outlawing hacking consoles and modifing savefiles about 2 years ago is it true?
I think it’s just illegal to sell modded consoles in Japan. But if someone in Japan were to mod a gameboy and keep it for themselves it wouldn’t be a problem. But then again, I never saw the video you’re talking about so don’t take my word for it haha

What's your opinien about Romhacks like Pokemon Prism or Crystal Clear?
I think they look amazing and I’ve been meaning to get around to them for a long time now. Thought about playing crystal clear for this video but decided to go with something closer to the original crystal. Maybe I’ll tackle them in a future video!
