When Fate was talking about being a boy, I really thought he would mention meeting Carter as Hawkman's previous incarnation. That would have driven home a 100 year friendship, and an extra layer of Fate not wanting to see his friend die a second time.
Fortunately, this doesn't have to be the end of Pierce Brosnan as Fate. The helmet holds a primordial god inside it and, generally, will keep the spirits of past wearers.
His ability to fluently speak modern english appeared to be part of his powers, because I noticed when he voluntarily depowered, and retook his natural form, his clothes were his 5000 year old clothes and he was no longer speaking english, but his native tongue.
Well with that logic, he got his powers from the 5 or 6 wizards and have all the best strength, wisdom, whatever.. and that helped him adapt to the language… but that would also make him super smart and that wasn’t shown in any part of the movie. It’s just lazy writing 😁
@@ninjanibba4259 This is my main problem with Shazam. He has all these powers he uses all the time, but never the wisdom of Solomon. Shazam should be smarter than Batman or Lex Luthor. I guess Shazam has always been a 3rd-rate character and has never had good writers. He should be a lot more than what he is. In the movie, he should have figured out his powers instantly without help (Black Adam did) and also find his (Billy's) mom within hours. Solomon was beyond brilliant. Ridiculously smart.
I came to the comments to say the same thing. I actually really liked the subtle nod they made with this where he spoke English, said Shazam, and spoke his next line in his original language.
I did like the hint of flirting between Cyclone & Atom Smasher… I liked that nothing special was made about Cyclone being black (unlike the prequel comic). As for Black Adam speaking English… it is actually one of his powers, to learn languages quickly. Atom Smasher does pre-date Ant-Man… his father was the (golden age, i.e. 30’s to 50’s) hero The Atom… who was just a short guy who was a good boxer. Ant-Man was Marvel answer the DC’s silver age The Atom, who could shrink in size. I could give you a lot more… like how Cyclone in the comics was a Redhead and this movie is just another in a long line of movies replacing Redheaded female characters with Black characters… but that’s enough for now.
I thought Cyclone did wonderful job for what she was. She looked very magical when she entered the wind zone or whatever. I didn't care about the color of her skin. Her scenes made for some great visual shots.
Its a bad movie but with todays standards it’s whatever. A lot of flaws but there is entertaining moments. The relationship among the characters are awful and this whole antihero honestly it’s shit the rock is a hero.
Never forget that within a year after DC creating and releasing the character of Slade Wilson (who becomes Deathstroke) Marvel immediately ripped him off and made a character named Wade Wilson who we all know now as Deadpool.

As Drinker said, nothing to write home about (except the action), but nothing really to complain about I loved the past 3 DC Movies with The Snyder Cut, THE Suicide Squad, (Peacemaker), and The Batman And if Black Adam is the worst they can get (not that I think it's a bad film), then I'm excited to see what they got for the future
@@elliotvernon7971 not at all :) it was an excellently done conversion from the comics .. and it told us all "nobody in DC has magic plot armour they are all MORTAL" .. and I for one applaud this :)
I did like the little scene in one of the marvel movies, where falcon was telling Steve about some things he should check out, and Steve pulls out a little list with music and movies he’s missed while being frozen for however long. It’s just a little thing that shows how much he’s missed out on, and his willingness to learn the things he didn’t know about previously
MCU movies have always excelled at music. It's all through. Iron Man prefers AC/DC. Doctor Strange has every song memorized and has people quiz him during surgery. Star Lord carries around a cassette tape of song his mother recorded for him. DC has always been too on the nose with music. There's no finesse at all. So if someone had jumping powers they'd play something like Van Halen's "Jump". Very basic. No thought required.
Remember he's not the original Atom Smasher, you can see he was talking to the original Atom Smasher that aged,he's powers are growth, super human strength, durability, bulletproof ,he's a giant bad ass ,while ant-man only shrinks n grows
And Ant-Man loses strength when he grows because his body has to provide all that energy. On a good day he's about as strong as a regular guy would be at that height. Atom Smasher gets super duper strong on top of becoming a giant. More like if the Hulk was wearing Ant-man's suit and grew huge. But then most of the DC characters have become ridiculously OP strong for no good reason in the last couple decades. Wonder Woman is about as strong as Superman and is basically impervious. I think most of the scenes with Amon and Karim could have been cut to make room for more development with either the villains, the relationship between Hawkman and Dr. Fate or Black Adam himself. The movie wasn’t as bad as the reviews make it out to be, but there were certainly times when I thought it dragged like crazy or didn’t have enough meat around the bones.
@@elliottobelliotnwaobi4779 No, it wasn’t. It was great action packed movie. As a nerd i feel the need to intervene with some clarifications: -Dr. Fate indeed precedes Dr. Strange since the Justice Society was a WWII era super team, it also included Superman back in the days. -Hawkman has no superhuman powers, he´s pretty much like Conan the Barbarian on Wings. He´s also not black so they changed him a lot for this. -Black Adam, like Shazam and Wonder Woman, has wisdom that comes from the gods, thus he can speak english or any other language.
He has the wisdom of Solomon so I think that's what helped with the culture shock; which was also how he picked up on things like sarcasm and using a catchphrase quickly.

I'm on record as saying it was pretty good. Not great. Pretty good. I didn't feel cheated. It was the movie I paid to see. A lot of things were super familiar like Drinker said. Familiar but not played out. It kinda worked. Fate was a lot like Strange. Atom Smasher was a lot like enlarged Ant-man. Also the annoying kid was like Freddie Freeman in Shazam. Hero worshipper, teaches BA to be a hero, and even called his power set "stacked". Hawkman lived at Professor Xavier's mansion school, complete with a VTOL SR-71 jet. They were fighting over Eternium like Wakanda people fighting over vibranium. Very deja vu.
I saw it today. It was alright. I laughed at the beginning about how cringey it was. Plot was eh but it got better after it actually got started. Dr Fate was definitely the best character. Tbh, not a terrible film. Had some parts that genuinely made me laugh but was also cringey. The side characters were just sitting there... I liked their interactions with eachother. Nothing has to be a masterpiece or a dumpster fire. There's a lot of middle ground that needs to be embraced, regardless of what the hyper polarized internet dialog would have us believe. Is Black Adam a great work of cinema? Heck no. Is it still a genuinely cool and fun movie-going experience? Heck yes. Sure, it has its flaws, but it's still a "decent" movie that doesn't try to be anything more than what it is.
You have the movie, which is represented in "h", and then the rock, who is represented in the "uh", and together, they create the "huh". I like how in the Christopher Reeves Superman films, he talks about how he always generates an energy field that he can surround other things in, and so, when Superman lifts, he is basically causing whatever he touches, that he is lifting, to also have the same force exerted around all of it. This is why Superman has the most believable superhuman strength ability, rather then just pushing really hard at one point of something and it somehow makes the entire thing lift without bending or breaking.
I don't remember Christopher Reeves explaining that. The first time I remember them discussing it was in the 80's when John Byrne took over creative control of Superman for the reboot and called it "tactile telekinesis". This would allow him to lift a whale, for instance, without just going right through the whale like a bayonet. If he just had strength and flight, he wouldn't be able to pick up a whale without causing serious damage to it.
Interestingly Hawkman's son Hector DID become Doctor Fate in the comics for awhile and honestly he was just about the only other tolerable incarnation of the character outside of Kent and his wife Inza because the writers usually have NO idea what to do with Dr.Fate at all and usually retcon how it even works, to the point that the person wearing the Helm is just a warm body for the spirit of the Helm to possess ( and no, new 52 and Young Justice fanboys, that's not how it always worked)
It's very cool... and possibly inevitable that you two would find each other and provide awesome content for those of us who know that most current media is garbage, and don't have to watch it as your critiques are enough to validate our decision to avoid the abortions of the media world over the last 5+ years. THANKS!
This movie is the first movie I can remember having felt like having a cinema audience around me while watching it actually improved the experience. The people around me where reacting to jokes or "cool" moments in a very positive way which made thos somewhat... "okay" scene feel way better than they really where. I liked it, it wasn't bad, but it had a couple of very forced and cringy expositions, one of the most awful "kid sidekick" (that comes bundled with him mom) we've seen in a while, but the couple of Mortal Kombat fatalities in there made up for it. One part that was very... "unconfortable" wa the very obvious anti-american set up they had originally, with not-iraq occupied by evil not-USA, but its pretty clear they scrubbed a LOT of it in the later edits. Still, you can feel its shadow looming over the movie, and the way thos not-USA guy just... vanish from the country right when (minor spoiler) the evil big bad show up, was pretty jarring. Especially since it would have been an easy way to have them help a bit the country and don't look as bad.
@16:50 Adam learns English, and understands the mexican standoff (quickly) because his power-set includes "S" ( *S* HAZAM) = _wisdom_ of *S* olomon. Can learn quickly (magic level).
Absolutely. She-Hulk was a hot mess inside a dumpster fire, on a train wreck, aboard the RMS Titanic, within a woke nightmare. Other than that it was OK. People really wanted something that wasn't the M-She-U, and this movie was that thing.
It apparently sounds okay. Contrast that to the Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania trailer that just dropped earlier today which even though it felt like a fun Disney Marvel superhero "Honey, I Shrunk The Kids" the absolute first thing that came to my mind was "How are they gonna inevitably fuck this up?"
Thats part of what makes the Witcher awesome. The Witchers have a small number of set spells with known capabilities that they employ consistently. They don't come oit with crazy insane abilities to save the day.
Correct, Ant Man is a rip off of The Atom who was created over 20 years before. All 3 basically have the same power therefore Atom is the orginal the other two are both derivitive of him.
@@claytonhomer3096 I'm quite familiar with the Atoms Ray Palmer and Ryan Choi. I was a huge DC fan from way back. I mostly just gave up after Darkest Night and the New 52 reboot.
In my opinion, the movie was meant to be simple, action-packed super-hero fun and it delivered in that regard. Its nothing ground breaking or completely original BUT you won't feel like you wasted your time. I also liked how, with just a few lines of dialogue, we got a peak into who characters such as Atom Smasher, Cyclone and Fate are beyond what they can do. Especially Fate - you could tell what a burden his abilities had become
The film has my favourite bit of dialogue i've heard all year: Dr Fate: Why do they call you Black Adam? Black Adam: Because i'm 13% of the Adams but commit 50% of the crimes
"A game changer" (the advertisement) "It wasnt terrible... It's just kind of a movie" (the critical drinker) What's so ironic and sad about current culture is that both of these statements are accurate.
By the by, the ability to speak all languages is in the SHAZAM power set, so while annoying they didn't mention directly, it makes sense. If you remember when he gives up the power he reverts to speaking ancient gobbilty gook
When you are forced to say that mediocre movies are decent, that's a problem. That's a fundamental problem stemming from the lack of proper story telling in Hollywood. I'm not afraid to say it, this is content. It's not exceptional, it's not terrible, it's just content. Nobody is going to be talking about this movie 6 months from now.
Indeed, i feel like i'm losing my mind, the amount of people celebrating this film. It's aggressively average! Just because it's not woke, it doesn't suddenly make it a top-tier piece of filmmaking.
I really wish they had the kid Hurut (?), start out as being cowardly, then in the last act, when someone has to rally the people of the city to fight the monsters, he says he can't do it, but Black Adam (who said he doesn't kneel) kneels down in front of Hurut and tells him something like "You don't always need power to be a champion. Anyone can be a hero, if they choose to find the courage to do so." And as he's talking, intercut the image of his son. That would have tied some of the points of the movie together and really hit in the heart I think. It would have been like what he wished he had told his own son.
Much of Black Adam relies on a comic-hip audience seems to me .. like the usual assumption that everyone knows the "Big Four" .. flash, supes, bats and WW .. ofc its not really true with the hundreds of other DC guys .. unless you watched the excellent 90s Justice League cartoons which covered .. maybe all of them? Idk .. a hell of a lot of em anyways
Here's what I'll say in defense of Atom Smasher and Cyclone in particular: they both were incredible *unoffensive* . I've gotten so used to seeing youth characters be insufferably woke I was just expecting it. But while Smasher is a dork he does clearly have a deep drive to save people, prioritizing damage control when he could have been just smashing stuff, and Cyclone is *really nice* , doesn't backbite or condescend, and despite clearly being a very intelligent person, she doesn't lord it over anyone.. she's even *humble* about it and pointing out the mad scientist's nanobots are doing a lot of the heavy lifting. I'll take that over loud, soul-sappingly woke toddler teens any day of the week, just have to punch up their story impact and include some character development and you've got some winners. Maybe next time around!
Agreed. Clearly Hawkman and Doctor Fate were the two experienced powerhouses. The other two kept their eyes open and their mouths shut when the two veterans were making the real decisions about the fate of the world. This was actually rather realistic. If I just got superpowers I wouldn't mouth off to those two.
@@protorhinocerator142 I can't help but think they could have very easily given the new recruits a bit more shine if they squeezed in moments where Hawkman directs them to focus on protecting the citizens from Intergang at first, then the minions of Hell, and Dr. Fate could have remotely given them insight as he and Hawkman were focused on removing Adam from the city, or taking Sabbac head on. The story really wanted to throw shade at the Justice Society for not giving a crap about Khandaq, but these guys really are heroes and would be gladly putting themselves at risk to keep them safe while the heavy hitters are smashing things around. Bit of a lost opportunity.
In the comics, Black Adam killed his nephew to have the power to himself (b/c it was shared between them) because his nephew wanted to show mercy to his slavers. But Black Adam was so filled with rage he killed his nephew when he stood in his way of his revenge.
In my opinion the family was a bit annoying, and the dialogue was meh. But I found it just loads of fun myself, getting to watch Black Adam kick the shit out of everyone. I’m actually quite satisfied with the fact they didn’t make him some Boy Scout good guy by the end that doesn’t kill, and sits on a high horse of justice. Although, as someone with an interest in military aviation, I’m upset they didn’t include the scene where he slaps the wing off the F-35… Other than that, I was quite satisfied with the movie. Nothing groundbreaking, but I wouldn’t mind watching it again.
I get that it has some plot holes and cheesy acting.. But it was the most fun I've had at a movie in a long time. It's amazing the benefit of the doubt I will give so long as the movie doesn't try to be my moral authority while I watch it
The biggest problem I saw with "Black Adam" is that it seemed to be trying to be a Marvel film. And the bigger problem there was that it was done superficially. "Black Adam" took some of the elements and actions without really understanding the reasons they were done in Marvel movies.
@@Anna-sd4zl BvS was a cheap copy of Captain America Civil War. I think the DC writers found out what Marvel was doing and copied it.

Let's make it simple, Drinker, if a Marvel character exists, you get a 80% chance it's basically a DC character they re-branded.
I have to agree even though I love Tony, Steve and Thor.
Never forget that within a year after DC creating and releasing the character of Slade Wilson (who becomes Deathstroke) Marvel immediately ripped him off and made a character named Wade Wilson who we all know now as Deadpool.

That's called character moments, something this movie lacks
MCU movies have always excelled at music. It's all through. Iron Man prefers AC/DC. Doctor Strange has every song memorized and has people quiz him during surgery. Star Lord carries around a cassette tape of song his mother recorded for him.
DC has always been too on the nose with music. There's no finesse at all. So if someone had jumping powers they'd play something like Van Halen's "Jump".
Very basic. No thought required.

The metal in Hawkman's armor and weapons is often immune to magic, like in the cartoons. Since that's what Black Adam runs on, he's pretty resistant.

But it wouldn't have any bearing on him being slammed through buildings or into the ground, unless it absorbs impacts/kinetic energy...
Hawkman only wears nth armor in 2 versions of the character... new 52 Carter Hall and the Hawkman who replaced Carter Hall pre-52
Shame they ignored the best part about new 52 Hawkman ... his nth armor is essentially a symbiote, and his weapons are an extension of the armor
As a nerd i feel the need to intervene with some clarifications:
-Dr.
Of all the movies that came out this year, this is one of them. This is a movie.

@@yourmum69_420 Well, Superman does use such an energy force in other places and not just the Christopher Reeve's Superman films.

One part that was very... Still, you can feel its shadow looming over the movie, and the way thos not-USA guy just... vanish from the country right when (minor spoiler) the evil big bad show up, was pretty jarring. Anyone can be a hero, if they choose to find the courage to do so." And as he's talking, intercut the image of his son.

Marketable leading man, who isn’t ashamed of his alpha smile or byceps, gives an earnest effort. And apparently loves and appreciates his fans. That’s the main reason movie is well received by the audience .No political pandering and/or ham fisted preaching is the other.
I was terrified they were going to give Black Adam the Thor treatment, but they managed to make the movie funny without assassinating his character.
The boy and his mother were trash actors. fortunately they didn't stay on them longer than needed to advance the plot.
The mom is an actual good actress it's her character that is trash, as hard as she tries
I bumped into drinker when he went to see this. I’m in the que with my dad and turned around and he was there. He was a pleasant guy
If you want to see a great movie about the theme of a person living in olden days time traveling and walking into a future he has no clue about, you should see Just Visiting! It's awesome!
Great vid
My 2 favorites in one place. I'm sure I'm going to enjoy this video more then watching the fucking rock. How our standards have been degraded. But I guess I'm happy to have anything new to watch :)
Certain subplots could have been removed (e.g. villagers fighting zombies),
The voices for Sabac and Dr Fate were a little weird; they could have been better.
And a rated R version would be cool.
Talking about the spells used. The Closer Look did a brilliant video recently where he looked at the world building of the spells used by Dr Strange and how adding more spells with little depth takes away from tje understanding of his powers. It's refreshing to hear that Dr Fate has a small subset of abilities that he focuses on
I love that meme doing the rounds at the moment of the Rock in like his past 6 movies and he looks like he is wearing the same shirt for every movie.
This has got to be the closest Dwane Johnson has come to playing villain. I know he's being written as an anti-hero, but it is still definitely a departure from his roles that always have him playing the good guys or heros
I think he did a pretty good job as the Antagonist in his first appearance in the Fast and Furious franchise.
@@justintuisamoa4191 yeah, I forgot about that
He was basically the villain in that Doom movie featuring Karl Urban as That Guy #1 and Rosamund Pike as Lady In This Movie. I've seen that movie at least 40 time because it's the movie my big fat hairy neighbor puts on whenever he performs auto-erotic asphyxiation.
he was a villain in "the mummy 2
